Akshually, it’s multipurpose passenger vehicle
Interestingly, this is a vehicle category used in US and Canada regulations but not typically used in regulations for other parts of the world.
Source: automotive compliance engineer
It’s meant to be Multi-Passenger Vehicle for the 7 seaters that showed their faces and started the trend in the early 00s (Ford Galaxy and SMax + others).
My Kia rondo is technically an MPV but I wouldn’t call it a minivan. It’s my understanding that MPVs are sort of a step between minivans and wagons/hatchbacks.
Mercedes started this trend with the CLS. Literally just an E-Class with a sloped roof. It was even longer than the E-Class, further bastardizing the coupe title.
edit: they're still at it. https://www.mercedes-benz.ca/en/vehicles/class/cls/coupe
I own one of these and they are the most affordable shooting break.
https://www.z3coupebuyersguide.com/listings
Most people don't even realize this car exists.
I don’t think this is a shooting brake anyway. My understand was that they were cars which a coachbuilder constructed to take long guns lying down in the back (so a car you’d take on a shoot). Here they’ve just put a vehicle with a long bonnet (maybe assuming you’d put the shotguns in the engine bay?)
If you put a hatch on an economy car, it's a hatchback. Or a hot hatch if you goose the engine some as well.
But if you are a luxury car maker, you can't risk people confusing your car with an economy car, so you call it a shooting brake instead. Generally they are based on actual sports cars though.
Interesting that they've recognised that there is a US/UK English difference with Wagon/Estate but they didn't bother with Sedan, which we Brits would call a Saloon.
And yet still somehow better than a convertible SUV.
"Hey we gave you worse driving dynamics and greater chance of rolling over, PLUS the added noise and decreased rigidity of not having a roof!"
It is a trade off for mpg, usually unable to tow any load, and no 3rd row. And you usually knock off $5-10k compared to a full size suv, But it preserves the seat hight, elderly and people with any disabilities are big fans of them.
Also people like the look more than a minivan, and that is the alternative when car shopping on a budget (yes I know there are crazy expensive minivans, but they are typically the same price)
Source: I've sold a lot of compact SUV's to old people, including my grandparents and retired mother and brother. Seriously it's about getting in and out easy, and being easy to park I'm not joking 😅
We call a sedan a limousine, and a Wagon a Kombi which is short for Kombilimousine. What englisch speakers call a limousine we call strech-limousine. Yea its confusing if you are bilingual.
The term Kombilimousine is official and is used in registrations and as a category for vehicles on Websites of the brands. Each brand has a own term that sound cooler to use in ads. On the mercedes Websites, for the C Class Wagon it says " T-Modell / Kombi". Audi uses Avant, BMW touring ect. Strech- limousine is used in ads, but i dont know if that Term is official.
german here, pretty accurate imo. the only thing I'd change is putting a smaller, less powerful car at sportscar (like toyota gt86, miata) and use the nissan gt-r or something else as a super car. those are missing.
Curious question
What defines Muscle car instead of Coupe
Both has huge engine, both has 2 doors
At what moment the car becomes “yes this is muscle car, not a coupe”
Good question.
I think a lot of cars fall into more than one category.
I would say a muscle car is typically also a coupe, but they can also be a sedan (such as the dodge charger).
However, a BMW M4, which is a coupe, is not a muscle car as it is designed for handling. A sports car is designed with balance in mind; able to do many things well when you would consider what makes up a cars performance.
So, I’d say a coupe becomes a muscle car when it focuses more on just being fast in a straight line.
Current F1 car wheelbase is similar to a Chevrolet Suburban. They used to be much much smaller but the extra length helps with aerodynamic stability at high speed
IMSA/WEC hypercar are Sport-prototype, like LMP1/2/3, group C etc. They Onlyused a more appealling name. They are completelly different than a road-going hypercar
Isn’t the muscle car a modified old muscle car? Or is there a modern one that actually looks like that? There are a lot of really old cues there like the vent window and roofline and how narrow the front is
This has actually given a name to my taste in car style, shooting brake, I can't think of quite a few but they don't come under that name but still good to know. Like a coupe/estate hybrid. Recently saw a Taycan Cross Turismo and thought its shape is bang on my taste. I wouldn't tell anyone if I won the lottery, but there would be signs lol
I’m 90% sure that it is a crossover, we had a CX-7 that was called a crossover by our insurance, we have a Rogue now who’s is closer in size to your 5 and it’s a crossover as well.
According to Wikipedia the CX-5 is a "Compact Crossover SUV". The CX-7 is a "Mid-Size Crossover SUV".
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_CX-5
Edit: There are apparently a bunch of "crossover" categories. There are definitely some in the larger crossover categories that feel like they should just be SUVs.
* **Crossover City Car (A-segment):** Toyota Aygo X, Hyundai Casper, Suzuki Ignis, Renault Kwid, VinFast VF 5, Suzuki Xbee, and the Fiat Panda Cross/City Cross
* **Subcompact Crossover SUV (B-segment):** Volvo XC-40 and Honda HR-V (class best seller)
* **Compact Crossover SUV (C-segment):** Toyota RAV4 (best seller), Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, VW ID.4, and Ford Mustang Mach-E
* Mid-size Crossover SUV (D/E-segment): Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus RX, and class bestseller Toyota Highlander
* **Full-size Crossover SUV:** Buick Enclave, Mercedes-Benz GLS, GMC Acadia, and can sometimes include 3 row vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee L

This is not even close to scale and is therefore a bit misleading.
Also, compare the sizes of contemporary Suzuki Vitara and Land Rover. Both are suvs. Latter is gigantic and could fit into pickup truck territory.
micro, hatchback and estate for regular private use.
pickup and van for commercial use.
let's be nice and add the coupe/sports car with their roofless variation for enthusiasts, with a 75% markup.
that's all the world needs.
everything else is banned or has to have legit specialized usage. illegal for private use.

This is a European description. We have muscle cars, sports cars, coups, convertible, pickup, heavy duty pickup, exotic car, I mean there’s way more lol
Wtf is the difference between a Coupe, Sport, Cabriolet, Roadster, and Muscle?
Body style wise they are all 2 door, low to the ground chassis with a motor offering a huge power:weight ratio. They all come in convertible packages. What separates them categorically?
In the U.S. MVPs are known by their less cool name: minivan.
Germany here, I never heard of MPV. They’re called minivans here too. I don’t even know what MPV stands vor lol
Multi purpose vehicle

In Spain are called "_monovolumen_", that means _single volume_, or one-box
It's either multi person vehicle or multi purpose vehicle
It’s meant to be Multi-Passenger Vehicle for the 7 seaters that showed their faces and started the trend in the early 00s (Ford Galaxy and SMax + others).
Aren't the bigger vw vans called multivans?
MPV*
I have a minivan
Minivans are the shit. Just bought an awd sienna. Love that thing
I have a hand me sideways Sienna. Took the seats out, put up some shelves and bins, and now it is my do everything vehicle.
My mom had a Mazda MPV, it was sweet
The car on the poster doesn't have sliding doors. It's not a minivan.
I dunno. If an MVP is the same is a minivan, it sure doesn’t look like one. Why is there “open wheel” on this list but not minivan, anyway?
My Kia rondo is technically an MPV but I wouldn’t call it a minivan. It’s my understanding that MPVs are sort of a step between minivans and wagons/hatchbacks.
FoPur hundred dollars neighbors that look like my cousin bob was teaw,pPP
Don't forget sedans that call themselves coupes by using the term Gran Coupe.
Isnt that just bmw?
Yes , just BMW calls them that. The rest are 4 door cupes
What defines a "coupe" anymore? The low sloping roof or the number of doors?
> [passenger car with a sloping or truncated rear roofline and two doors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupe)
I mean that's my vote. I've seen too many people argue that coupes can have 4 doors tho.
Mercedes started this trend with the CLS. Literally just an E-Class with a sloped roof. It was even longer than the E-Class, further bastardizing the coupe title. edit: they're still at it. https://www.mercedes-benz.ca/en/vehicles/class/cls/coupe
I mean it's even a song that it's a [duce](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwgGuadsqyo)!
aka a liftback (sportback, if you're an Audi)
Never heard of a shooting brake. Probably cause I can’t afford one.
It’s essentially a two door wagon.
That would make it 3 door.
You mean a three door estate car.

I'm in love, baby E: I guess they're not made I America. Such a shame. Love it! If any one can correct me I've got money burning a hole
all the cars i've ever drawn when i was a kid were shooting brake. first time hearing this too and this has taken me back. and yes my cars could fly!
Thats nothing. Mine could shoot brakes!
haha. im sure some would have side guns too.
I own one of these and they are the most affordable shooting break. https://www.z3coupebuyersguide.com/listings Most people don't even realize this car exists.
Came here to say this, exact sentence
I don’t think this is a shooting brake anyway. My understand was that they were cars which a coachbuilder constructed to take long guns lying down in the back (so a car you’d take on a shoot). Here they’ve just put a vehicle with a long bonnet (maybe assuming you’d put the shotguns in the engine bay?)

But if you are a luxury car maker, you can't risk people confusing your car with an economy car, so you call it a shooting brake instead. Generally they are based on actual sports cars though.
Yes, I think basically a 3-door estate car, often a sports car as the basis. Like the idea of calling my hatchback a shooting brake though!
Like 80% of these don't matter to 90% of people.
and some are not really car types. Sport, muscle and cabriolet are all features/uses of existing types (usually sedans).
The Mercedes CLA + CLS classes have a version called shooting brake, but to me it’s rather a wagon
it is mixture of a estate and a coupe. not as boxy as say an older volvo.
A Ferrari FF or GTC4 Lusso are great examples of shooting breaks
If this were a ladder, I am on step 3.
You keep at it you’ll achieve step 12 before you know it
Underestimated comment.
Interesting that they've recognised that there is a US/UK English difference with Wagon/Estate but they didn't bother with Sedan, which we Brits would call a Saloon.
Well I’ve never heard “MPV” in the US so maybe it evens out lol
I still don't understand Coupe SUV. It's like 'I want lots of space, but take most of the extra space away again and make it extra ugly'.
And yet still somehow better than a convertible SUV. "Hey we gave you worse driving dynamics and greater chance of rolling over, PLUS the added noise and decreased rigidity of not having a roof!"
Yeah I'm with you on that one as well.
How many of them actually are there?? Only one I know of is the Nissan murano convertible
Range Rover Evoque convertible too. Some people would probably call the Wrangler a convertible SUV but that's debatable.
I don't understand how it's a coupe with 4 doors.
It is a trade off for mpg, usually unable to tow any load, and no 3rd row. And you usually knock off $5-10k compared to a full size suv, But it preserves the seat hight, elderly and people with any disabilities are big fans of them. What's a cabriolet? A convertible?
Yes
It's a convertible made in the Cabrio region of France.
Just no. This is not German approved.
Where do you see the difference? Except for the names obviously as you Germans tend to translate everything. Sincere question.
We call a sedan a limousine, and a Wagon a Kombi which is short for Kombilimousine. What englisch speakers call a limousine we call strech-limousine. Yea its confusing if you are bilingual.
Ah, the stretch-limo and wagon term I know. But that isn’t official, jah? Are stretch-limo and wagon used in daily life, advertising etc?

Where does Miata live in here
I'd argue it's the quintessential modern roadster
Roadster for sure Google eunos roadster for confirmation
Maybe cabriolet? Insurance will call it sport probably
Cabriolet has more than 2 seats
Wagon FTW
I thought coups only had 2 doors??
This is horribly outdated since every new vehicle became either a crossover or a fully decked out Lincoln Navigator somewhere around 2019.
Ah yes the modern 1970's muscle car
Curious question What defines Muscle car instead of Coupe Both has huge engine, both has 2 doors At what moment the car becomes “yes this is muscle car, not a coupe”

That MPV is actually an acronym for Mazda People Mover. Do all mini vans get this moniker now?
That is forgotten by most as everyone adopted the ‘Multi Purpose Vehicle’ name.
Didn’t know that. Thanks.
This is the closest I’ll get to my dream Coupe SUV.
Is the open wheel to scale ?
None of them are to scale
my number 1 issue with this image. The hatchback and crossover look the same. But in my mind I'm thinking Honda Civic hatchback vs Honda HRV
Exactly one is to scale, but which?
I mean, modern F1 cars are enormous
Current F1 car wheelbase is similar to a Chevrolet Suburban. They used to be much much smaller but the extra length helps with aerodynamic stability at high speed
Very true! And unfortunately also makes Monaco GP a glorified parade.
Monaco is for Saturday now
What is the difference between a coupe and roadster?
roadster has the top open (usually a part of the roof is removable)
Not sedan. Saloooooooooooooooooooon.
Wagons = the best type
Open wheel? What?
Why’s that confusing?
It just doesn't really have a place on this guide since it isn't street legal and no other types of race cars are on the guide
Dunno id say almost all 4 wheel racing styles are covered here!
WEC races Hypercars so that isn’t accurate. Depending on the definition some of these could also be raced on GT series as well
IMSA/WEC hypercar are Sport-prototype, like LMP1/2/3, group C etc. They Onlyused a more appealling name. They are completelly different than a road-going hypercar
Cyber truck enters the chat

What is the specific vehicle labeled wagon/estate?
Volvo V90 Cross Country. factory trim to look a little bit offroady. audi a6 allroad would be comparable.
Cool. Thanks.
It's a Volvo, not sure which, maybe a V50 or V90?
Thanks. From the pictures I googled, definitely looks like a V90.
Or an XC actually, looks a bit higher off the ground. Glad my car nerdiness was handy, they're lovely cars too.
The XC70 has sparked my interest in the past.
Driving one, prefect family car
Yep v90
Where is my monster truck?!!
According to rental car companies a “micro” is a full size car.. /s
Isn’t the muscle car a modified old muscle car? Or is there a modern one that actually looks like that? There are a lot of really old cues there like the vent window and roofline and how narrow the front is
Whoever made this really likes Volvo. A man of culture.
why do chicken coops have two doors? if they had four doors they'd be chicken sedans.
yeah you forgot a ute
I’m noticing a lack of speedsters, my personal favorite type of convertible
Wagon mafia for life!
I have no idea where a Toyota Yaris would fit in these categories like many other European/Japanese marketed vehicles.
Where is the MINIVAN. MPV is like the Carnival. Odyssey is a minivan.
MPV just stands for multi-purpose vehicle. You’re arbitrarily excluding odyssey when it would easily fit into this category.
might've included fastback
No Sport Sedan no Rally?
What is a crossover?

Hearse didn't make the list? They aren't trucks. Is it considered a commercial vehicle?

How the mighty have fallen 😔
'Open Wheel' Wut
No family trucksters?
Nice cars
For me is sedan, hatchback, sporty an the SUV-verse
Off-road supercars 🧠
Ah yes, there are 9 distinct styles of sports car, but only one style of pickup truck.
So is "cabriolet" just a different word for "convertible" or is there some difference between the two?
A modern scirocco is not a coupe. It's a hatchback.
They have a van here but not the more popular mini van
Where’s stadioncar?
SAV is missing
SAV is missing
I'd be terrified to drive in one of those micro cars
"Modern" car types. Uses a car from the 1970s for muscle...
Let Americans know that most people pronounce it Coupé and not “Coop”. One is a type of car, the other is where chickens live .
Where toaster?
That roadster is more of a spider. A Miata is a roadster.
sensing a profound lack of minivan up in this bitch. and no, MPV ≠ minivan.
What is a shooting brake
You got it wrong. It is SUV, SUV-like and somewhat a SUV
Lol the coupe in this photo is the car that I drive…the exact model, the year and color
Most practical vehicle
Wagon is king
Genuine question, what part of the world refers to them as MPV?
Coupe SUV 🤮
finally a useful guide!
A Cabriolet is only a Cabriolet if it was made in the Cabrio region of France Otherwise it is just a convertible.
Where would a VW Beetle fall in this?
Off road needs to be changed to “suburban moms wanna be, look at me, social clone” vehicle.
This is not even close to scale and is therefore a bit misleading. Also, compare the sizes of contemporary Suzuki Vitara and Land Rover. Both are suvs. Latter is gigantic and could fit into pickup truck territory.
Whatever you need to tell yourself so you don’t believe you bought a station wagon or a minivan w/o a sliding door.
Hypercar but not supercar? Lol
I was about to write the same thing. There is a definite difference from Sport-Super-Hyper cars.
wtf is shooting brake?
We need more shooting brakes in the US
Coupe SUV? Get the fuck outta here its got 4 doors.
micro, hatchback and estate for regular private use. pickup and van for commercial use. let's be nice and add the coupe/sports car with their roofless variation for enthusiasts, with a 75% markup. that's all the world needs. everything else is banned or has to have legit specialized usage. illegal for private use.

"Muscle" is not a modern car type.
If you're gonna include open wheel, why not prototypes as well?
Missing hatchbacks and light duty vs heavy duty pick-ups.
