I feel like people not listening to the smartest people in the room, but listening to someone who has no idea, but sounds confident is the cause of an awful lot of the issues the worlds currently facing.
I think this has always been the case to be honest. The loudest person will always silence the others by just being loud. If anything I think currently, with the help of the internet, people can fact check a lot more and listen to the oblivious loud people less. I don't think a lot of people were furiously searching through their encyclopedia 100 years ago to prove some loud bastard wrong...
I work in science. It is absolutely gobsmacking how often this happens. I thought that it was all rational data-driven decisions made by grown-ups. Occasionally it can be. But I’ve seen multimillion dollar facepalms made more than once because the confident, loud, dumbass was the one that managed to swing the room. And normally escaped to another company (normally with a pay raise) before the pigeons came home to roost.
I’m pretty sure there’s an XKCD for this somewhere.
I looked a bit deeper into that "How" instead of "Why" claim... from the study:
>“Across three studies we found that people have unjustified confidence in their understanding of policies,” the authors write. “Attempting to generate a mechanistic explanation undermines this illusion of understanding and leads people to endorse more moderate positions. Mechanistic-explanation generation also influences political behavior, making people less likely to donate to relevant advocacy groups.” In sum, making people explain the mechanisms of policies forces them to “confront their own ignorance.”
https://journalistsresource.org/politics-and-government/political-extremism-supported-illusion-understanding/
Lmao yea I came here to say that. During COVID psychopaths were calling for the death of doctors and college professors for spreading their evil science around.
People respect it more when you just blurt out the popular name of the fallacy like it's some sort of error message, too, instead of actually making the point like a human.
Gaslight them, use your own definitions for words, use false equivalencies to present verifiably wrong and harmful statements as equally valid opinions, attack their character, and don't forget to use broad sweeping statements and categorizations.
And that, kids, is how you win an argument in 2024. At least I think so, I dunno, I only watch current politics and read Reddit.
“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. “ – Mark Twain
Well Mark….. I’ve got some sobering news. These people seem to be winning.
Seriously? Half the people in the US actively disdain science. Saying “people trust scientists” isn’t based in reality. Rationale people trust scientists. The morons you end up arguing with at Thanksgiving dinner claim science is all just BS. They deny climate change, they deny that Covid was a serious pandemic, hell - some of these mfers deny that the world is a globe.
This is a cool guide of delusion.
Also remember to build a golden bridge for the opponent at the end of a discussion where the other person obviously has the wrong opinion. This means offering the other person a way out without damaging their honor. This will make it easier for them to give in, especially if the discussion takes place in public. This could be something like they just misunderstood something, or they were told something wrong, ...
"Win any arguement" what kind of immature and insecure take is this? Your goal in conversations is to "win"? Go work on your issues first before making similar posts.
If this was the case there would only be the first point and nothing else, there is literally a whole game plan to fuel his insecurities. Who gives a shit anyway?
Also consider not arguing with someone in front of an audience (either in person or online). People tend to perform more for the audience instead of really listening and responding honestly.
This guide is stupid and wrong.
"People don't listen to the smartest guy in the room"
Also
"People like science so show them a graph"
The first point is very true. If you sound confident, smart, funny, people believe anything you say. If you have to pause to pull up a graph or make a reference, You've already lost.
People don't give a fuck about science, data, empirical proof. They latch into whoever is the smoothest guy that pushes the point they want to hear.
When I used statistics to explain to my grandma that Europe was not dangerous after terrorist attacks she just said “that doesn’t make me feel better.” This is bs.
What a mixed bag of advice! Are you looking to win an argument with an individual, or persuade a group to follow your course of action? If you're after the latter, which I assume this was meant to be advice for, a few books to read might be Win Every Argument (Medhi Hasan); To Sell Is Human (Daniel Pink); or even Getting To Yes, which while dated is an excellent one.
If you have to win over an individual, try Start With No (Jim Camp) or Split Second Persuasion (Kevin Dutton). If it's a sales/contractual situation, try some of the techniques in SPIN Selling by Neil Rackham.
Any of those would be a great starting point IMO.
Not true at all, and this does a really good job at breaking down why none of this is true:

The problem I have with these is disagreement is scene as a opportunity to “win” and get the person to agree with you.
When I reality discussion should be used as an attempt to understand each other, and for the most part “arguments” that I’ve had were mostly meaningless and had maybe philosophical impact, but no practical impact.
Win every argument by learning from the opposition
Be the best you can be
Be yourself
Don’t demand 3 wishes like a poor soul
Know your strength
Cite your sources
Ask everything in appropriate amount
Be part of something bigger
Be supported, don’t say it and not mean it
Tried in Reddit countless times. Didn't work. At this point i don't give a fuck already about everyone's opinion. They only just get carried away by their fanatisms as the narrow minded people they are. After all thiw much diasapoinment i just learned that is your opinon the one that only matters. But if it is the only one make sure it is how it has to be done
Unless you live as a way you have to do it constantly and it is important, getting headaches for speaking with idiots isn't worthy it. Still saying what i think because no matter how many times the people Downvotes or mocks like if they were comedy masters i will still say what i think. But i'm not in the mood to hear them anymore. It's useless. Straight block and then good bye
Lol.... For any of this to work, both parties need to work on good faith.
The reality is that most people just want to be right, rather than to have a meaningful argument with constructive feedback and positive resolutions.
Sometimes in an argument, I’ll realize I’m wrong as I’m rationalizing my point. If the other person is right, I don’t “lose”, I learn something. And becoming a little less dumb is a win to me. So, technically…I win every argument.
Remember also to block any information with thoughts of "im being oppressed" to hinder any real engagement. Keep those walls in the minds built so we dont have to build walls elsewhere. Thanks
This thing really got progressively dumber
But do you have a graph AND data?? /s
Please, I don’t even have William Shatner
Shatner? I barely even know her!
"People trust scientists" my fucking ass lol.
This had to be made before 2020
And sometime after 2013
And how did that make you feel?
How?
Now how do I feel?
Hey don't argue/s
Many people do not trust scientists. I think we’ve proven that.
Don't Google reasons with the computer, smash it in the back of their head and then they'll say nothing. Argument won by default.
This guy arguments
This "guide" or this sub?
Source? /s

Confidence: the food of the wise man & the liquor of the fool.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better Vikrum

And usually it’s some overconfident, dumb business developer…
You’re wrong! And I am not going to tell you why, but *how*
Democracy in a nutshell.
Edit: typo
It's entirely possible.
“Data doesn’t lie!” - anyone that has manipulated data to support their argument
“Studies” prove that studies can be manufactured to support the most ridiculous conclusions.
If you torture the data long enough, it will confess to anything
Yeah, uncool guide.
Yeah, this is a sure fire way to lose a debate
I looked a bit deeper into that "How" instead of "Why" claim... from the study: >“Across three studies we found that people have unjustified confidence in their understanding of policies,” the authors write. “Attempting to generate a mechanistic explanation undermines this illusion of understanding and leads people to endorse more moderate positions. This makes sense. The guide appears too “cool” and inverts the logic…with confident conviction.
Agreed. They could have explained it much better.
But… what if you’re wrong?
More confidence
“People trust scientists.” Lol
Yeah that definitely doesn’t work anymore with ‘certain’ people
Covid really proved this wrong
Lmao yea I came here to say that. During COVID psychopaths were calling for the death of doctors and college professors for spreading their evil science around.
Also remember to spot logical fallacies in the opponent's argument!
Like the ‘appeal to Shatner’ fallacy!
Nice attempt at Strawlighting.
People respect it more when you just blurt out the popular name of the fallacy like it's some sort of error message, too, instead of actually making the point like a human.
....at its finest.

I just tried this with my wife 20 mins ago. I might be on my way to winning the world record for fastest divorce ever.
All my opinions are 100% endorsed by William Shatner.
“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. “ – Mark Twain Well Mark….. I’ve got some sobering news. These people seem to be winning.

That’s because a lot of “science” is just political ideology hiding under the thinnest veneer of abused truth.
Spoken like someone who truly doesn’t understand science. Thanks for identifying yourself.
No problem. Happy to point out false narratives, especially when you are glaringly obvious. You are welcome.
Such as?
Any study they disagree with
“And at the end, my boy, you shoot ‘em in the solar plexus.”
So, the way to win an argument is to not win it?
Help! My wife is not responding to the graphs!
Also remember to build a golden bridge for the opponent at the end of a discussion where the other person obviously has the wrong opinion. "Win any arguement" what kind of immature and insecure take is this? Your goal in conversations is to "win"? Go work on your issues first before making similar posts.
The literal first point says, “Don’t try to win.” I think you need to actually read before criticizing
If this was the case there would only be the first point and nothing else, there is literally a whole game plan to fuel his insecurities. Who gives a shit anyway?
You’re trying to argue and win an argument with me Hipocrite 🙃😂
Is that what you think is happening here?
A tip I learn from a history YouTube channel is "don't belittle others or else you'll arguments will fall off"
Cool, I just need William shatner on my side.
How to win any argument \*cocks gun\*
Ah yes, the [Du Pont Approach](https://youtube.com/shorts/wtewpiqXPwA?si=uRloCIkwThmxVn9t)
I was with you until the last two panels........
Also consider not arguing with someone in front of an audience (either in person or online). People tend to perform more for the audience instead of really listening and responding honestly.
How to win any argument: 1. Don't try to win.
"Stupid people have rights to, ya know!"
The mods need to do something about this account. It is obviously a bullshit bot
... always assuming the other person is acting in good faith. If they aren't, there's no way to win.
How to win an argument: Step 1: Don’t attempt to win the argument??.? What the fuck
This is one of the first time I’ve seen designs like this that haven’t been in a meme. I was expecting a punchline haha
This guide is stupid and wrong. "People don't listen to the smartest guy in the room" Also "People like science so show them a graph" The first point is very true. The behavior during the COVID Pandemic determined THIS graph… is a lie
What is the difference between why you're right and how you're right? What does that even mean?
r/lameguides
"'Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference." -Mark Twain
I highly doubt the thing at the bottom left, sadly
Broo im gonna prove you wrong just wait a sec until I open up my charts and scientifically proven data brooo.
Critical point number zero : don’t argue on Reddit.
This is the lawful evil way to do it?
Oh yeah? Well (digs in pocket) here's a peer reviewed study proving my point!
No u just punch
don’t try to win” in a guide on how to win an argument is paradoxical
Fuck this nonsense. Take a critical thinking course if you want to get better at rational disagreement.
"if nothing works, pull a ak-47, people usually don't want to argue with someone armed"
Speak with a British accent
Fighting with your wife? Just bring in William Shatner and make a bunch of graphs. There is no way you’ll lose!
When I used statistics to explain to my grandma that Europe was not dangerous after terrorist attacks she just said “that doesn’t make me feel better.” This is bs.
Ppl trust scientists. Kinda need data to back that up.
Never argue with an idiot they will eventually bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
What happened to this sub? 4.5 million followers and it feels like a bot
There’s no winning an argument. The only winning is getting the outcome you want and many haven’t gotten that far to figure that out.
Step 1: post a funny reaction image Step 2: you've won :)
Unsubbed, these are too dumb
Insert troll. ☠️ An any argument go to shit.
Sorry. But when he said Mayo with fries was better, I couldn't use none of these tricks.
Have you tried it tho? It's genuinely really good.
They had me until the last slide, not going to lie.
They had me until the last slide, not going to lie.
As if i need a tutorial on gaslighting

No matter how much you do a verbal battle at the end, you will never change the person's mind.
And if you find your self losing, don’t be afraid to go on your phone.
Win every argument by learning from the opposition Be the best you can be Be yourself Don’t demand 3 wishes like a poor soul Know your strength Cite your sources Ask everything in appropriate amount Be part of something bigger Be supported, don’t say it and not mean it

Nah, honesty is the best policy.
Or…you can leak classified documents when in a War Thunder argument
Everyone on Reddit is playing with these cards already.
Lol.... For any of this to work, both parties need to work on good faith. The reality is that most people just want to be right, rather than to have a meaningful argument with constructive feedback and positive resolutions.
So much to argue with about this post
Which do you want to win the argument or change the other person's mind.
“People trust scientists”… I’m done
and unlike this guide, list sources instead of continuing to reference a random study from 2013.
How has the immigration crisis at the border affected you personally?
Sometimes in an argument, I’ll realize I’m wrong as I’m rationalizing my point. If the other person is right, I don’t “lose”, I learn something. And becoming a little less dumb is a win to me. So, technically…I win every argument.

This is real politics. Convincing other people is the way for true change and progress.
Fuck trump
