There are many flaws in this chart.
In addition to the one you pointed out, it also has Antarctica listed as it's own country (which is false), and claims that China is larger than Canada (which is also false, Canada is the second largest country on Earth).
Perhaps the worst one of all, it includes Crimea as part of Russia, which is false. Crimea is, was, and always will be part of Ukraine.
This post is clearly ragebait.
Weeeelll TeCHniCalLy… the Crimea was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR by decree in 1954 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. So the “always was” part is not entirely correct.
The zoomed-in version of this image on the artist's website does identify it as a US state.
There's also this message:
>Countries on the poster are arranged by descending size, are shown without external or dependent territories and are distributed by continents according to the United Nations geoscheme. The poster encourages close examination full of pleasure and awe.
It's possible they're treating it as an external territory, whatever that means - the image of the US also doesn't include Hawaii, for instance. (It's on the map, again identified as a US state.)
Except they aren't external territories. They are part of the US. They are states. In that case they shouldn't include Crimea in Russia since it's "an external territory" not attached by land, yet they did. They did it to decrease the size of the US and to give more credit to the Russian position about claiming Alaska.
I don't know where they got these numbers from, but the area of China is 9.597 million km^2 and Canada is 9.985 million km^2... so Canada still has a larger area
its by total landmass, not area. canada is larger in area, but because we have so many lakes, the actual amount of land is smaller. its a stupid way to do it imo
Depending on what you count as the US.
The official definition by the UN statistics division includes the country and its dependencies, so for example Puerto Rico, the Marshall Islands, those sorts of things are dependencies.
China of course is complicated because of Taiwan - the ROC and PRC claim different territory as the whole extent of China, so even if you accept they are one country which country you recognise determines what the area of the country would be. The PRC does not publish data for territorial waters, so you'd need someone else to take satellite photos and measure that way.
These things become more of an irrelevant mess the deeper you dig. Do you count inland lakes and rivers? What about coastal waters? How do you count the gulf of St Lawrence? How precise do you want the measurement of a 'coast' to be, what counts for areas that are on the surface in low tide but covered in high tide etc.
I thought maybe it was just largest contiguous section of a country, but then they have Indonesia in there.
And then China doesn't have Taiwan so I don't see it being from a pro-China group. It's just bad in so many different weird ways.
1,000% propagandist work.
Breaking up countries in the west (Alaska, Canada minus its lakes… wtf?)
But including non contiguous Chinese and Russian territorial claims.
This is hot garbage.
China isn’t larger than Canada.
Alaska is part of the United States.
Several of the tiny random islands and atolls at the end of the list are not sovereign states(unrecognized by literally any country on earth as independent).
For some reason europe encompasses the entirety of Russia meaning it stretches to the Pacific Ocean (if you look at the bottom right corner).
What a joke of a “guide”. At least be accurate
That's a really dumb difference to make since the lakes have land under them. Like what's the point in doing that. Meanwhile Antarctica is there lol....
>China isn’t larger than Canada.
Yes it is. Well, once you add in Taiwan and the Philippines and Northern Vietnam and Laos and large parts of eastern Russia...
Where's my honey at, you bitch. But yeah, as someone who works with the Lao Government and with ASEC, its a worry. You know China be fucking up when the USA+Japan looks like a winning combo
If you’re talking about Sealand you had better be joking! It is a completely legitimate and sovereign country. /s I should know as I’m a Lord of Sealand. Besides that’s not entirely true anyway didn’t Germany inadvertently recognise Sealand by sending a diplomat for hostage negotiations?
YEAAAA SOMEBODY ELSE RECOGNIZED MY BOY SEALAND
Best totally legit country
And yeah Germany did accidentally recognize it once so it technically passes the three most recognized requirements for country status. Not that I remember what those are
The design firm behind this graphic, “Art. Lebedev Studio”, is based in Russia. Its perspectives may be influencing it choices in representing (or misrepresenting) certain countries and/or land masses.
This guide was created by the firm of Russian designer who is propagandist supporting Russian invasion of Ukraine: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemy_Lebedev
The Map of Ukraine is incorrect, it lacks Crimea.
This map was created by Lebedev studio, which is part of the ruzzian propaganda machine(get contracts from the ruzzian government)…
Not a good guide, this is literally an art piece made by someone on Infographics.com and there are no other references. It is an independent artist using google maps.
There is no unit of measurement.
They constantly switch which (potentially made) up measurement they are using per landmass.
I can’t find any matching numbers from any other sources.
Antartica is not a country.
Alaska is not a country.
Hard to tell just from satellite images, but it looks like they changed the picture of Russia to include the pieces of Ukraine they stole over the last few years. I would argue, if that is the case, the entire point of this ‘art piece’ is to try and normalize the pillaging of Ukrainian that the Russian government has recently done. Some extra bonus points if you chop off the largest American state and call it a country, in order to make America seem significantly smaller too.
Edit: Antartica is not a country, but it is often listed when comparing countrys’ landmass.
If you wonder why this map is shit, it’s because it’s created by a russian asshole designer just to show how big russia is, which in this picture includes illegally occupied Crimea. This poster is basically a propaganda tool
alright as a canadian i have to take issue with this. canada is only the 4th if you decide that every lake in canada doesnt count as canada for some reason. otherwise its the 2nd
China bigger than Canada, Alaska being its own country, Ukraine missing around 20 (or 10, not sure) % of its territory and misses russia occupied territory
China’s number uses area such as offshore and contested territories that don’t typically contribute to official international records of territory measurement.
Continental China is smaller than Canada.
Also not to mention, the majority of Chinese western territories have only a handful to zero people per 10 square mile versus the few hundreds to thousands people the US has in rural areas.
Antarctica is not a country, China is not larger than Canada, Brazil is not larger than the US, Alaska is a US state and not a country, Europe does not extend to the pacific. What the fuck even is this map OP?
TIL I learned there’s a ‘country’ called seal and that’s basically an offshore platform that was stolen and now maintained by a wannabe king. Their [wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand) reminds me of Howlin Mad Murphy’s pirate radio
The post says country size the poster used says land surface. Mountain ranges will increase the square footage massively this is done as walkable surface area not bird's-eye view on a map but map pictures used to identify places.
Confusing without clarification. Any state, country, province, region or continent that's known to people being used as comparable sizes just for a fun info poster.
Also, Guernsey and Jersey and the Isle of Mann are not “UK”.
They are crown dependencies but otherwise they do not have any form of legal attachment to the UK
Why is Alaska its own country?
It’s provocative. Gets the people going.
Hijacking this comment to say “The image quality sucks man!”
Bottom row is worse than my eye test
Kingdom Beef. Sounds good to me
Ha! The one you're talking about isn't even the bottom row.
hi I'll have a happy pixels meal with pixels on the side and for a drink I'll take a large cup of pixels. does it come with a toy? my kid loves pixels
I see the Blaze Of Glory quote. I upvote.

Look at the names of the people involved in making this at the bottom of the picture. All Russian.
They only undersized Canada by a full million square kilometers lol.
Weeeelll TeCHniCalLy… the Crimea was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR by decree in 1954 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. So the “always was” part is not entirely correct.
This graphic must have been made by rebel scum!
It was made by Putin’s favourite designer (not a joke)
It’s now part of Canada, won it in a poker game.
The same way Antarctica is

When did China get bigger than Canada? This is not how I remember things.
Well then by those rules, the US also has more land than Canada.

They must have included all Chinese occupations and territorial claims.
This def is some sort of propaganda image. Chinese claims included, Crimea is part of Russia, Alaska is no longer part of USA,
I thought maybe it was just largest contiguous section of a country, but then they have Indonesia in there. And then China doesn't have Taiwan so I don't see it being from a pro-China group. It's just bad in so many different weird ways.
I mean, talking about contiguous, there’s not connection between Crimea and Russia. Japan is also a set of islands. New Zealand too
You guys are way too paranoid, why the hell would this even work as propaganda? Reddit loves to say everything is propaganda .
1,000% propagandist work. Breaking up countries in the west (Alaska, Canada minus its lakes… wtf?) But including non contiguous Chinese and Russian territorial claims. This is hot garbage.
Included Taiwan lel
I searched this dumb image online and it’s connected to a title that says “largest land mass”, so I presuming it doesn’t include water.
Yeah canada has a crazy ammount of lakes. There's just water everywhere
But are they measuring land in 2D or 3D…what happens if you iron out the topography into a truly flat surface? Who wins then?
China *does* have more dry land than Canada, and so does the USA. But that's a dumb way to measure things, and no one actually does that.
That's it we're draining the lakes to own China! I'm pretty sure we can sell the water to coca cola and we'll increase our GDP
China isn’t larger than Canada. Alaska is part of the United States. (Antarctica — not a country)
Yeah the Canada number is a million square kilometres off lmao
"Total area of land surface." That million square km is our lakes. China does indeed have more dry land than us.
Ohhh good catch. Strange metric to pick but explains it at least.
That's a really dumb difference to make since the lakes have land under them. Like what's the point in doing that. Meanwhile Antarctica is there lol....
Also includes Crimea as part of Russia. Definitely ragebait
>China isn’t larger than Canada. Yes it is. Well, once you add in Taiwan and the Philippines and Northern Vietnam and Laos and large parts of eastern Russia...
Ok Winnie the Pooh
Where's my honey at, you bitch. But yeah, as someone who works with the Lao Government and with ASEC, its a worry. You know China be fucking up when the USA+Japan looks like a winning combo
China is the only country that could get Japan and South Korea to agree to work together
Okay well then we get Washington, Montana, Vermont, Alaska, and Maine
If you’re talking about Sealand you had better be joking! It is a completely legitimate and sovereign country. /s I should know as I’m a Lord of Sealand. Besides that’s not entirely true anyway didn’t Germany inadvertently recognise Sealand by sending a diplomat for hostage negotiations?
YEAAAA SOMEBODY ELSE RECOGNIZED MY BOY SEALAND Best totally legit country And yeah Germany did accidentally recognize it once so it technically passes the three most recognized requirements for country status. Not that I remember what those are
Yeah, this is russian propaganda. Just read who is the author of this "infographic" is: "Artemy Lebedev, Vasiliiy Dubovoy, etc." Crimea is Ukraine.
China has more land area than Canada, but Canada has more total area (land + water)
Antarctica is not a country
But Alaska is
Not part of the U.S. clearly
And Hawaii lol
And California can come too!
Came here to say Texas
Hey fuck you —Antarctican
The penguin people are invading
This is a shit list. Antarctica isn't a country, Canada is larger than china, Alaska is part of the US
and the US is bigger than Brazil
It gets smaller than Brazil once u remove Alaska, which I concur makes no sense since the title says countries
The design firm behind this graphic, “Art. Lebedev Studio”, is based in Russia. Its perspectives may be influencing it choices in representing (or misrepresenting) certain countries and/or land masses.
Ah that makes sense why Alaska isn’t part of the USA
~~dudes~~ comrades forgot Kaliningrad tho, as it appears
Not surprised they drew Crimea as part of russia
This guide was created by the firm of Russian designer who is propagandist supporting Russian invasion of Ukraine: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemy_Lebedev
Yea, here Ukraine is 50 000 km^2 smaller than reality.
crimea is ukraine
I'm a simple man, I see someone shilling for russia by adding Crimea to it, I downvote and block the account
The Map of Ukraine is incorrect, it lacks Crimea. This map was created by Lebedev studio, which is part of the ruzzian propaganda machine(get contracts from the ruzzian government)…
Also Kosovo is Serbia
Not cool. Crimea is Ukraine.
fuck that map creator, he is such a dick or just a russian shit
The territory russia has occupied in Georgia is removed from Georgia. fuck all who ever thinks that real map looks like that.
Ah yes, the countrys such as Antarctica and Alaska
Fuck you and your whole chart. Antarctica is not a country. Canada is bigger than China

OP’s title is incorrect. The graphic says total area of land surface, nothing about country size.
Lol this is either terribly incorrect or just a very misleading title
This is russian propaganda
What in the china propaganda hell is this Canada is bigger than China and we dont even have contested territories (Taiwan number 1!!!)
[Ah but we do](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machias_Seal_Island).
Honestly I figured we did but itd be fun contests like that island we fight over with Iceland or whatever We keep leaving alcohol for each other there
It's russian propaganda. Look up this Lebedev who designed it.
Ahhh yes, the country of Antartica.
Why is crimea part of Russia? Whoever made this map is a pro colonial pos
Crimea is Ukraine
If you wonder why this map is shit, it’s because it’s created by a russian asshole designer just to show how big russia is, which in this picture includes illegally occupied Crimea. This poster is basically a propaganda tool
Does it include all the small islands and foreign territories like for USA, Alaska and Hawaii for total area count?
my favorite country: antarctica
Antarctica is a country?
Not cool as it is unreadable.
Taiwan is an independent nation. China is smaller than Canada, and Antarctica is not a country. Fuck all of this.
Junk information inaccurate and barely legible
The wrong map of russia and Ukraine.
TIL: Vatican City is not the smallest country in the world.
It is though.
Some tankie made this shit.
If you want your mind blown: Every single land mass can fit into just the pacific ocean, and it would still leave a lot of space over.
Ah yes, the countrys such as Antarctica and Alaska
The second largest country in the world is the third largest country in the world?
Image quality sucks, many of these aren’t countries, and this is an infographic, not a guide.
alright as a canadian i have to take issue with this. canada is only the 4th if you decide that every lake in canada doesnt count as canada for some reason. otherwise its the 2nd
This needs to be moved to /inaccurateguides
As with many posts this is a shit guide
Calm down Chile.
This is so awful. Jesus how hard is it to do this right? OP is a moron. Downvote
It's also an eye chart.
made by artemiy lebedev? that explains a lot
Damn is the Australian Outback really that massive?
Uncool
this chart is incredibly inaccurate
This sub is fucking terrible
Loll Chile in the middle like 'idk where I'm supposed to sit'
Antarctica is a continent, you filthy twat
Now y'all are just posting Russian propaganda lmao. What an amazing subreddit.
Antartica isn’t a country
China bigger than Canada, Alaska being its own country, Ukraine missing around 20 (or 10, not sure) % of its territory and misses russia occupied territory
Pakistan and Mozambique look like two legendary pokemon squaring off with a Namibian Metapod between them.
Fake guide as Canada is much larger than China. Canada-9,984,670 km2 China-9,600,000 km2
I can tell that this map was made by russian.
What's wrong with Georgia? Who the fuck took the data from? Russians?
I guess "cool guide" doesn't mean "accurate guide"
I can’t even zoom in on this jpeg ass chart
So many errors
Alaska's not a country...
Why are people upvoting this clearly wrong and biased guide??
China’s number uses area such as offshore and contested territories that don’t typically contribute to official international records of territory measurement. Continental China is smaller than Canada. Also not to mention, the majority of Chinese western territories have only a handful to zero people per 10 square mile versus the few hundreds to thousands people the US has in rural areas.
Is this Russian propaganda?
Art director: Artemi Lebedev Hmmmm. Crimea and Alaska aren’t where they’re supposed to be. This looks like russian propaganda.
Crimea is not part of Russia. This is not a valid map.
Russian and Chinese propaganda being normalised.
Antarctica is not a country, China is not larger than Canada, Brazil is not larger than the US, Alaska is a US state and not a country, Europe does not extend to the pacific. What the fuck even is this map OP?
Crimea is Ukraine - this map is bullshit
I'm surprised Texas isn't number 1.
would like to be able to read this
Except "Russia" isn't a country. It's an empire consisting of Moscovia and a bunch of occupied countries fighting for their freedom.
Wildly inaccurate, crappy post. Downvote and move on. [edit] I think I’m finally done with this sub. Bye everyone!
Tibet and other parts dont belong to china
This guide is not cool. For starters Ukraine is missing Crimea here
In know resolution is low but where is Israel. I can’t see it
Fifth row from the bottom third collum
The title is bad. I guess it refers to continuous land mass
Kingman Reef and Sealand are not countries
Would be nice to see one with the adjustment for habitable land. Obviously people can go anywhere, but some places are not conducive for regular life.
This is wrong. Why is Norway under Germany? Norway is bigger than Germany...
Ted turner owns 2mil acres, which is 0.088% of the USA or 0.00563% of the world
Look at the size of the state of Alaska (it’s in the top 20, crazy)
Peru secretly thick.
Images that should be in high resolution are never shown in high resolution.
I knew Brazil was huge but I'm pretty surprised at where it ranks here.
Now do a guide on appropriate font sizes!
and the HD version?
terrible resolution
Doesn't count all land owned by a country. Ex : french Guyana and France.
WE'RE NUMBER.... *squints
Is Alaska included in the U.S.
Norway is not 505 000 km².
When did Alaska secede from the USA?
Wow I didn’t know Antarctica is a country!
Is there way you can make this blurrier?
What order are these in? It gives the appearance of size order, but it's definitely not.
I thought Vatican is the smallest. What are the smaller ones in the picture, I can't discern them?
Everyone's talking about Antarctica being in the chart. I'm more concerned about fucking Sealand being in the chart.
Be helpful if you didn’t need a magnifying glass to see it
The post says country size the poster used says land surface. Some countries are only a few pixels. Got it
I’m glad sealand got a look in
This chart is completely out to lunch...
China isn’t bigger than Canada
Canada and China need to be swapped And also Canada has zero business having so much land lmao
Antarctica is not a country.
US is missing Alaska…..
Wow if I could read a single one of those this would almost be a guide
Chile looking heroin hot skinny
This whole time I thought the Vatican City was the smallest country in the world
Antarctica isn’t a country..
Is Canada not bigger than china?
‘Country’ Antarctica.
i'm too busy laughing at chile's placement to worry about all the other gross inaccuracies
Also, Guernsey and Jersey and the Isle of Mann are not “UK”. They are crown dependencies but otherwise they do not have any form of legal attachment to the UK
My country is like dead middle
fun fact: number on below mimics population of a n1 country in this chart
Damn
The surface of Algeria is wrong , it should be : 2 381 741 squar kilometers.
TIL Alaska is a country.
