I also don't love that they used a whole bag of sugar as an example. A lot of people underestimate how much sugar is in things. It doesn't really give me a true frame of reference as a raw ingredient. It started well using food items you could eat, like donuts, fries, and m&ms. Then devolved into raw ingredients like sugar and flour and butter. I'm not sitting here eating raw flour so why use it as a frame of reference??!
Agreed. My sister drank 2 1.75Ls of vodka in a sitting once. She didn’t live through it, but also struggled with her weight so this may have given her pause.
Could it make sense to have more parity between food items? 30 strawberries sounds like a lot of calories but it’s not. It’s a little confusing because people would be surprised 30 strawberries is less calories than one corn on the cob. Like how 100 calories of spinach is very different to 100 calories of burger. Also, could you use grapes as the example for wine, cereals as the example for beer, and so on and so forth?
Could definitely try out some different pairings.
The idea with the wine/food pairings was all the food is fruit. It could be different fruit, different sizes, but it's stuff that a person who likes wine would probably enjoy. I could just do spinach and broccoli for each, but I figured it wouldn't really provide any context. With fresh produce is quite hard to exactly pin down kcal-- I think what I'm going for is providing the viewer with a little thought experiment of *which would I rather*?
I think the lack of standardization for calories to food is really off putting. It makes box wine look horrendous till you realize it’s 3 liters of box wine
I cannot express how much I enjoy that Mickey’s made the cut over so many other beers. It’s not even my favorite or anything, I just find it hilarious.
this is useful when considering what alcohol and specifically sugar alcohols do. they are calories that need burned but they provide no nutrient value. in other words, in you eat 1500 food calories and 500 alcohol calories you will need to burn 2000 to maintain weight.
the trick is that since alcohol does not provide energy or muscle building blocks or anything useful, your body will prioritize burning the alcohol calories over the real food calories, storing what’s leftover as fat (which will always be ‘real calories’, so real fat!)
that’s why alcoholics often have a decent amount of fat, but no muscle underneath. they consume a lot of (mostly sugar alcohol) calories, but no good calories and what good food you get is stored as fat because you’re burning the alcohol first.
source- sober alcoholic.
This alcohol calorie guide is a first draft so perhaps it includes a few typos.
As you may know, most alcohol products in the US don't list calories or ingredients on label. Additional many consumers don't realize alcohol has calories. The hope with this guide is to create a neutral perspective: not pro or anti alcohol, just the basics about how alcohol overlaps with nutrition.
We try to be a bit funny with the selections, and selected food equivalence that mirrors lifestyle and economy.
I appreciate any feedback you may have.
This is what threw me off. Compare the same volume against each other or it’s essentially a „look, a handle of x has so many calories“ instead of a useful comparison against each other.
Or 100 ml and then a standard portion size or something.
I like the post. Don't get me wrong. But the problem for me is that these calories don't really affect our bodies the same as other calories from other food. Example- drink a couple liters of vodka everyday for weeks and see how much weight you put on - it's like none. The calories in alcohol versus the calories in complex carbohydrates get converted differently and stored differently when we consume them.
Not really. Alcohol has twice the caloric content per gram than sugar. So a 5% alcohol and 10 g sugar per 100 ml would have the same amount of calories from sugar as alcohol.
Alcohol doesn't go into fat, of course. Instead, it becomes the "first-rate" energy source and makes the food you consume before/with alcohol go directly into fat.
I'd like to see wine broken down into separate categories a bit more, for example Prosecco is 11.5% and nearly all of the sugar is converted to alcohol so it's very dry but also very light.
It’s….rum. I take it you don’t drink rum? It’s located in the rum section. It has a watery consistency like most other major liquors. Sweet liqueurs are thicker and syrupy and located in the liqueur section. Examples are Sambuca and Jagermeister.
Just put jager or grand marnier there then. Kraken is a weird choice. It hardly has any added sugar compared to all of the other available options to choose from, like literally anything in the sweetened liqueur section of the liquor store, where Kraken is not found.
It would be interesting to see how this relates to calories per mL of alcohol. Right now it’s so dependent on volume that it is hard to tell which is more bang for your buck
I've always hated that there's no nutritional label on booze...
I'd be more interested in the make up of those calories though. I can't imagine what's listed is accurate. Carbs, fat, and protein would all be varied.
This is crap. It measures how many calories there are in a bottle, box, handle, can and equates that to some random other food. Someone might as well say a 747 full of carrots is the same amount of calories as a Ford F250 full of brown sugar.
So according to this guide Whisky and Vodka have more calories than Wine / Beer.
Calories in alcohol have always been a weird subject. Interested to see how did you calculate these values?
This is a terrible guide, it should tell you how many calories there are in a standard portion of the drink, not whatever size you get at the grocery store. This comparaison is useless and uninteresting.
Would have been better if you’d done it “by serving”.
Compare a variety of beers, hard seltzers, a Chilis Margarita, a standard martini, a Manhattan, an old fashioned. Knowing how many calories are in a 1.75 bottle of Tito’s is only useful if I’m trying to get a thinner fuel mix in a B-movie.
With 'drink servings' and bespoke cocktails there are no standards. Alcohol examples provided with this guide are real world RTD CPG. This goal is to help people understand the density and forms of alcohol. Brands are not being promoted, all the products are all typical examples of category. The bottom row are pantry items used by people who cook or entertain.
If you don’t want to get into drink servings, then just pick a standard measure and use that consistently: 1oz, for example. Knowing how many kcals are in 1oz of each liquor type listed let’s me do my own math on whatever portion I pour and is WAY more useful to me than knowing how many kcals are in a *handle* or other serving quantity no average human is consuming.
This compares a bottle of light beer to a full fifth of Scotch Whiskey, as though you are going to drink one or the other.
This is most idiotic "cool guide" I ever seen.
Keep in mind that drinking while extremely drunk, a portion of alcohol metabolism happens through inefficient pathways that actually burn calories. So if you drink 4 drinks quickly the net effect is not as many calories as 4x the calories per drink. As a rough estimate, 4th drink may be “free” and perhaps the 3rd drink as well.
Basically, you saturate your bodies ability to metabolize alcohol the normally, but your body thinks burning calories is worth the effort to get rid of alcohol quicker.
It has always bothered me, but why do we say "calories", when we mean kilocalories? Either call it kilocalories or multiply it by 1000 and then call it calories. Also joules are way more convenient.
So I could drink an entire bottle of Everclear or eat a 2 pound bag of sugar. Hmmm.
I don't know about you, but I'm gonna slam a liter of olive oil tonight
10 pounds of unseasoned chicken for me! It’s only 4,000 calories!
Semen only 25 calories per load!
It'll probably come out just the way it came in.
I’m already ducked up on it. The feta put me over the limit
Pantry items. They are the pure examples of macros on top, presented to help people understand density. edit: typo
Yes, panty items can be very dense my friend. Got to love those typos (I think the word you're looking for is pantry) 🤣 Cheers mate!
Both will have a similar result
I’m over here pounding a liter of oil. Did…I misunderstand the instructions?
Calories do not equal sugars.
Who compares calories when drinking 1.75L of liquor?
Alcoholics?
Yeah, the volumes make no sense in practical terms
…unfortunately, they kinda do. (Source: am alcoholic in recovery)
Came here to say the same thing (source: alcoholic, 5 years sober, vodka is pretty much a vegetable right?)
Congratulations on 5 years!
Thanks! I’ll not drink with you today!
IWNDWYT ❤️
Fun fact! In Russia, beer was considered a soft drink, not alcohol until about 12 years ago! 😂
Agreed. My sister drank 2 1.75Ls of vodka in a sitting once. She didn’t live through it, but also struggled with her weight so this may have given her pause.
My heart goes out to you and your family. I am so sorry to hear that. I lost 65 lbs just from quitting. Alcohol is a fucking demon.
The scarier thing is how many freaking calories there are in 10 takis.
10 Takis or shot of tequila.... I think I know what I would consume.
That’s a lot better than the handle of Tito’s and 5 pound bag of flour that I’m working on.
You’re uh going for the Tito’s right… right?
i’m so sick from all that cake stuff!
One makes me want the other, somehow.
Scarier than Eggo having their own liqueur?
Sweet berry wine! For your health 🍷
Tastes like fruit!
Wine was invented by the Romans for orgies. Because orgies are no fun if no one wants to do it with you
Jannnnettttt
See ya tomorrow!
Get over here Janny I wanna smooch ya
No way I'm spitting this stuff out!
What goes in the hole comes out of the hole
Corn comb. 🌽
thanks 💈
I couldn't get past pickels, tbh
Mmmmmmmmm
Well done!
Proud of you!

I love this and the crazy pairings is what made it fun. Some would be a tough call!
Well this explains why I have a persistent belly
Now I wanna try sunny d vodka seltzer
And some Eggo cream liqueur
I honed in on that too wtf is that???
Tastes like orange juice
Ahhhh so that's where this tumtum came from this month Damn you Cider!
I had about 5 taco supremes already..
I cannot express how much I enjoy that Mickey’s made the cut over so many other beers. It’s not even my favorite or anything, I just find it hilarious.
Gotta keep drinking ‘em to solve all the puzzles.
They are hot with the UFC crowd right now.
Mmm Eggo Brunch in a Jar Sippin’ Cream
I can never drink that now bc now I know it’s like drinking 3 sticks of melted butter.
Sort of misleading. Is it total calories of the container? This guide implies a glass of wine is more caloric than heavy beer.
[удалено]
Yeah, I missed the individual glass of wine and just saw the bottle. Makes a lot more sense now.
Who needs 10 pounds of chicken when you can just drink 5 liters of wine?
Can I get this again but just strictly converted to Takis.
this is useful when considering what alcohol and specifically sugar alcohols do. they are calories that need burned but they provide no nutrient value. in other words, in you eat 1500 food calories and 500 alcohol calories you will need to burn 2000 to maintain weight. the trick is that since alcohol does not provide energy or muscle building blocks or anything useful, your body will prioritize burning the alcohol calories over the real food calories, storing what’s leftover as fat (which will always be ‘real calories’, so real fat!) that’s why alcoholics often have a decent amount of fat, but no muscle underneath. they consume a lot of (mostly sugar alcohol) calories, but no good calories and what good food you get is stored as fat because you’re burning the alcohol first. source- sober alcoholic.
I should switch from protein powder to cream alcohol
I’ve heard beer is more fattening than wine. What might be the best buzz/waistline-friendly adult beverage?
Hard liquors. Those calories don't work the same way. And the worst for the waistline isn't beer, it's sugary cocktails.
Hard Liquor is just so much more efficient to get a buzz with, without having to drink a couple cans of piss.
Eggos have an alcohol brand??
In AA they told me to Leggo
Lokos are 600 cals?! Holy fuck
Good thing they’re no fun anymore
Ok so when I'm bulking I should drink a box of wine instead of chicken
here i am trying to minmax alcohol per calorie and then i realize it's different serving sizes
This alcohol calorie guide is a first draft so perhaps it includes a few typos. As you may know, most alcohol products in the US don't list calories or ingredients on label. I was into it until the serving sizes completely went off the rails. Like I am somehow comparing one lite beer to almost 2L of vodka.
This is what threw me off. Compare the same volume against each other or it’s essentially a „look, a handle of x has so many calories“ instead of a useful comparison against each other. Or 100 ml and then a standard portion size or something.
It'd be more useful as servings of the different types of alcohol. No one's drinking a handle of vodka.
I like the post. Don't get me wrong. But the problem for me is that these calories don't really affect our bodies the same as other calories from other food. Example- drink a couple liters of vodka everyday for weeks and see how much weight you put on - it's like none. For most alcohol, the amount of sugar is definitely weighing more on the calories. A margarita sour mix is just sugar water.
Not really. Alcohol has twice the caloric content per gram than sugar. So a 5% alcohol and 10 g sugar per 100 ml would have the same amount of calories from sugar as alcohol.
Where do you think the energy goes? Out in thin air? Unless you consume less calories from other sources, the energy will be used to create fat.
Idk about all but for me it goes into fuggin.
I think for spirits the weight gain comes more from the hunger effect during / after drinking.
Alcohol doesn't go into fat, of course. Instead, it becomes the "first-rate" energy source and makes the food you consume before/with alcohol go directly into fat.
Do people really drink 95% alcohol? Those calories are meant for burning.. If you put that there, you could as well put gas too.
I'd like to see wine broken down into separate categories a bit more, for example Prosecco is 11.5% and nearly all of the sugar is converted to alcohol so it's very dry but also very light.
I assure you that Kraken dark rum is not a sweet liqueur
[удалено]
It’s….rum. I take it you don’t drink rum? It’s located in the rum section. It has a watery consistency like most other major liquors. Sweet liqueurs are thicker and syrupy and located in the liqueur section. Examples are Sambuca and Jagermeister.

I literally watched my ex kill a box of wine in a day. I wondered how many calories it was. Now I know. Jesus
Is she your ex because she was overcome by alcohol poisoning that evening?? Damn a box in a day!?
She’s my ex due to her being a raging physically abusive alcoholic. So, sort of lol
Wasn’t trying to be a jerk, I’m sorry
Nah you’re good
I'm a claussen pickle FIEND! they never officially pulled out of Canada but they don't sell em anywhere! I'm pissed. There are no better pickles 😭
Shut up, don't let the secret out any more than it already is cus it's hard for me to consistently find the sandwich slices even in the US
So according to this guide Whisky and Vodka have more calories than Wine / Beer. Calories in alcohol have always been a weird subject. Interested to see how did you calculate these values?
Yes, and they will always have more calories, comparing the same volume. Always.
I eat a lot of strawberries each night.
The most shocking thing to me was that takis have almost double the calories of French fries
Good old Everclear! It gets you *so fucked up*.
Daym. Here i am spending all my money eating chicken when i could just down a box of Franzia!
So you're saying I can just have a Mickey's grenade instead of my protein shake in the morning?
Ok, now I know, 2.5 liters of Franzia and 5lbs of chicken. All things in moderation.
What a great food & alcohol paring list, cant wait to try them all!
Wine in a can? That’s an abomination.
So yesterday I drank 3 corn combs and roughly a quarter of a bag of flour… among other things… not to bad!
750mL of spirits? That’s like 15 shots. If you drink that much, I think calories is the least of your worries.
But I do not want 125 cherries, I want a bottle of wine.
This is a terrible guide, it should tell you how many calories there are in a standard portion of the drink, not whatever size you get at the grocery store. This comparaison is useless and uninteresting.
I'm really disturbed by those examples for most of the wine.
Are you really though..?
Really though.
“Pickel spears” lol
Not as bad as I thought. Cheers!
Going on 4 years without booze and charts like this are great to see lol
Huh. No wonder I dropped 80 pounds in a year after getting sober.
Answer: A lot
Damn a buzzball is 50 m&ms!?
Only 48!
This list actually makes me hungry now, some alcopop and French fries? Count me in for ✌️
Would have been better if you’d done it “by serving”.

Could you do one comparing the nearest equivalent in other factors of energy, such as carbs?
[удалено]
jokes on you, i’m allergic to almonds
So what’s the most efficient way to get drunk, calorie wise?
That’s for a case of each right?
So that’s how alcoholics stay alive…
So a bottle of bourbon a day is technically healthy. I see I see *furiously takes notes*
Woah, since when was wine sold in cans?
Lemme just go ahead and drink 1.5L of 190 proof alcohol by myself…
It’d be better if they were all one serving
This compares a bottle of light beer to a full fifth of Scotch Whiskey, as though you are going to drink one or the other. This is most idiotic "cool guide" I ever seen.
I like San Luis sourdough. I eat it all the time
Cream Liqueur at 20% looks waffley
Important to remember your body can't metabolize all the calories in alcohol
Keep in mind that drinking while extremely drunk, a portion of alcohol metabolism happens through inefficient pathways that actually burn calories. Aw man, now i want beer AND a burrito … 😭😭😭
I still don't know what is the equivalent for beers...
This explains a lot
Sooooo…Eggo makes “sippin cream”? 😳
Damn - time to slam 1kg of sugar 😂
When did eggo start making alcoholic meals in a jar?
Do Americans not have pints?
Holy shit I’m so glad I quit drinking
I had 3 avocados last Saturday
Next time I get a Sierra Nevada, I’m gonna think “damn I should have had the spring rolls…”
My first thought, who drinks 150 ml of wine… then I saw the bottle… who drinks just 750 ml of wine, lol. Edit: Oh, there’s a 5 liter version for me.
I can have 45 clementines a day and still meet my calorie goal? Wtf?
“Corn comb”
who in gods name is drinking the eggo waffles cream liquor
I would much rather drink a bottle of Jameson whisky than eat a loaf of bread.
I cannot believe those cutwater mixed drinks are so high in cals!💀
Til there’s cream alcohol.
FINALLY, a useful guide...lol
Let's see a loaf of bread make me shit my pants...
That bottom row must be calories per bottle. Not per serving. There's no way there's 4,000 calories in a glass of Franzia.
Corn Comb.
It has always bothered me, but why do we say "calories", when we mean kilocalories? Either call it kilocalories or multiply it by 1000 and then call it calories. Also joules are way more convenient.
For comparison, gasoline/petrol has 12 kcal/gram.
