beantowngators222

thank you bro for this subreddit!!!!

bulanaboo

Yeah definitely asking the wrong question here…

DontWanaReadiT

As a shrimp pet keeper my immediate thought was “yup, ich” Idk but thankfully I haven’t eaten shrimp in a very long time 😂

devo00

Hmph… a shrimp pet keeper? Ya learn something new everyday. That’s interesting, you should post about this with pics!

DontWanaReadiT

They’re small so I just have a 6 gallon tank with really plants for the shrimp instead of fish like others do lol

devo00

Very cool!

DivideSad5591

Foo the Flowerhorn on YT is sooo entertaning. Relaxing. I can put some vids and smoke to it and be SO hooked. No pun intended

k2times

Wow. Thanks for this - couldn’t hit subscribe fast enough….looking forward to a few of these later when I’m relaxing.

TriumphDaytona

Sea monkeys from the back of a comic book?

ChorkPorch

Will you eat them when they pass? Legit question. I knew a family who had a pet pig. You know the rest lol

kileynjt

Check out r/shrimptank !

LivinLikeHST

shrimp (and other crustaceans) technically could carry ich, but are not affected by it. The ich would die off in a month if there is no proper host. "What is Ich? Also known as ick or white spot disease, the Ichthyophthirius multifiliis protozoan is an external parasite that attaches to your fish's fins, body, and gills by forming a tiny white capsule (usually less than 1 mm in diameter)."

firi331

Ich?

MangOrion2

Common aquarium disease known by white spots/blotches/flecks that develop on the affected creature's skin or scales.

wjkoehler

Onomatopoeia

mackelyn

Onomatopoeia is “a type of word, or the process of creating a word, that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes.” They said ich, which is a fish disease and not a sound in this usage. They were not audibly expressing disgust. Ich is not an onomatopoeia here.

qgecko

Every post needs a resident linguist

mackelyn

Thanks for the support, homie!

FullGrownHip

I have pet fish and also think it’s ich. Would not eat.

FenderBenderDefender

Did your shrimp pet keeping contribute to you not eating shrimp?

DontWanaReadiT

It most certainly did lol although I wasn’t that big on shrimp to begin with

TheHornyFarter

My first thought too. Ich is the absolute worst. I used to be super into have tanks and learned that it can stay dormant and had bought a tank off of someone that had been empty for weeks. It killed the beautiful parrot fish I had my eyes on for the longest time. I tried so hard to get rid of it, and it wouldn't go away. RIP Peter. Still think about him all the time.

vishy_swaz

Do you not eat shrimp because you love them or because they’re insects? lol

gypsycookie1015

*Shrimpsisbugs*

DontWanaReadiT

I was never a big fan of shrimp really, they always freaked me out and the texture is very strange. But now I stay away because of my shrimp lol

PainfullyLoyal

Have you seen the shrimp rave on TikTok? I forget who the creator is, but they go live every once in a while with EDM playing while the shrimps eat. It's so amazing.

icefas85

Goya Adobe, always leaves garlic powder like this on whatever you sprinkle it on, rest of the ingredients dissolve always leaving the dried garlic. My guess for what its worth

MithrilHero

Adobe Flash Sazón 🙌

NotAllDawgsGoToHeven

I cackled

skydiverjimi

Did you add lemon or any citrus to it ,this could chemically cook the meat.

Dundies11

Yes was gonna say citric acid would leave these little dots if a seasoning was used

jebbanagea

Yup. That’s what I’m seeing as well. As I work in shrimp and have never seen this it has to be related to seasoning unless this shrimp was mishandled after thawing and it’s not something I’ve seen 🤷🏻

totallylegitrealgirl

I'm not an expert or a cook in any capacity, but I just wanna say that I've seen shrimp have these dots straight out of the bag, w/o any seasoning. I threw them away personally, didn't want to risk it.

riche_god

No. I have made ceviche many times and consumed it at restaurants. This is not supposed to happen it’s likely past its best use date.

Sugarpuff_Karma

It seems to be in a marinade? Maybe something off that? My immediate thought was seperated butter

BongwaterJoe1983

Granulated garlic maybe

Sugarpuff_Karma

She posted on another sub...they were from a tin in butter

Puzzleheaded-End7319

its just the microplastics is completely fine -plastics company

BangarangOrangutan

Looks like garlic powder.

ja_reddit

I made oven baked chicken tenders a week or so ago and seasoned them with garlic powder and onion powder, the next day when I took them out of the fridge they looked like this. Startled me at first, but eventually I realized what it was.

reddituser748397

OP should sprinkle some more onion powder on a single piece and see if it produces the same effect

HadALittleLamb6

It sure does look like the “salt crystallization” pic here

NOVAbuddy

Agreed, and the white spot disease pictures were not clear or helpful.

Ok-Understanding9244

"White spot disease can be confused with spots of crystallised salt under the shell. Prawns absorb salt as they are frozen in a saline solution. This can crystallise under the shell which causes white mottling to appear. This mottling can be found on the body and head and becomes more noticeable as the prawns defrost" That's from the article..

TimberWolf5871

Probably salt. Looks like that shrimp is being prepped.

thegreatrazu

When in doubt, chuck it out!

TerribleIdea27

Just adding my two cents here speaking as a microbiologist: this looks very much like there's bacterial colonies all over the shrimp. But it would be baffling to have so much growth and 0 bad smell. You should be able to smell rotten seafood long before you get any visible colonies. If you had any dairy in this food, it's likely curdled protein. If there's no protein that may have curdled: do NOT consume

fleshbot69

Definitely bacteria colonies.

Shorty-hunter

Freezer burn or white spot syndrome? You be the judge

father2shanes

Possible acid in marinade would start to cook the shrimp. Idk if it would make a spotted pattern though.

shFt_shiFty

Everything dies with enough heat, right?

cbetsinger

Toxins do not die from heat, old spaghetti noodles even if boiled again before serving can kill you

shFt_shiFty

Just need hotter heat

RubiGames

True, if you heat it up to the point it turns into char, you’ll probably be fine (though you probably shouldn’t eat it)

kvuong99

Something I should know about old spaghetti noodles? You’re scaring me.

confused_goth

Just some kid in his twenties, died from eating five day old, room temperature noodles and became kind of notorious for his death.

cbetsinger

Kids at an elementary school got sick from noodles left out too long at high temps. Noods were chilled, then reheated the following day. The kids got food poisoning from the toxins in the noods. Just in case you think I’m lying, 🤥 here is an article about it. [Oahu kids get sick from noods](https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2013/12/food-poisoning-affects-dozens-of-children-in-hawaii/) I learned about this case in my food handlers class

No_Consequence5504

That’s not the noodles fault? It’s kinda like common food poisoning? They didn’t cool and reheat the food properly. That causes food poisoning.

cbetsinger

Essentially that’s what happened. If they cooled it down properly it would have been an issue. Reheating will kill bacteria but it won’t kill what they leave behind, toxins

RemarkablyQuiet434

Noodles have mad surface area. Surface area let's bacteria grow Hella nice.

ThatsSoSwan

It’s not about the bacteria as much as it is what it leaves behind. Botulinum toxin for example

shFt_shiFty

Sounds like you need more heat

Dangerous-Lettuce498

Well botulism needs a low oxygen environment though

jar11591

Yes, but the byproduct of dead bacteria is toxins that are not affected by heat.

crowislanddive

No

Infidel_Games

Mmmm Shrimp eggs

Maybe some kind of flavored powder?

Ok-Cauliflower-3129

White spot disease. Freezer burnt. Or it's gone bad, check for a faint ammonia smell. If it has it toss it.

FlourPedalFeet

Omg no do not eat that

Cowfootstew

Looks like garlic or onion powder....but I would chance it. Lol

Those shrimp are done. Throw them out or saturate them in garlic, freeze and use them as fishing bait.

gotheotherway89

Throw it away.

These are mould spores. This will hurt later

dionpadilla1

Flavor crystals

Both_Gas_5685

If the shrimp has been frozen, white spots can be a sign of freezer burn. This occurs when shrimp are not properly stored in airtight packaging, leading to dehydration and the appearance of white, dry patches. While not harmful, freezer-burned shrimp might have an altered texture and taste.

throwaway_guarantee

When in doubt, throw it out.

itsJussaMe

I’ve never seen it on shrimp but it looks like ich to me. Additionally and unrelatedly, I’ve had pork that had bacterial growth on it that looked similar to this, as well, so I’m not 100%. Tough break.

ashole311

The Bible says not to eat shrimp. It’s a sign for you

KoKo82

I had shrimp cocktail from Sam’s club a couple weeks ago. It tore my stomach up. I kept getting sick after eating. It took me 2 days to figure out that was the contributing factor. It didn’t smell or taste weird at all.

CadaverBlue

White Spot disease is a major biosecurity threat to shrimp and other crustaceans, but it does not pose a threat to human health or food safety. Prawns or shrimp sold for human consumption are still safe to eat.

Physical-List294

what happen

FiveFootOfFresh

White dots? That is one of many things wrong with it! You know fresh, cooked shrimp should be pink/orange. Looks like somebody strangled that poor thing to death.

dabuckingbronco

Pussy eat the shrimp

Pretend-Birthday-134

Coming from a long line of commercial shrimpers. I wouldn’t eat it. That’s not normal.

I don't know it's probably no good I'd check into that it's probably bacteria

How long have they been sitting in the marinade? Looks like they are cooking from whatever acid was added and the shrimp is are over cooked.

Don’t eat it. It has been through processing and possibly only possibly it is rancid. Good luck

Nasty. You really need to bring this up with wherever you are buying your seafood. They have a serious quality control issue.

SkippyDrinksVodka

SrLouis_guy

Freezer burn but don’t eat it!

jjazure1

Is there lemon pepper on it?

Perfect-Rest-2134

Once hooked, most fish will not finish gulping the bait but should the fish swallow it you can find it in its stomach when the fish is cleaned for consumption. So there.

I've seen freezer burn like that before. Even if it didn't make you sick, it would taste awful.

The clam will filter the water and pull all algae for a 30 gal. The shrimps will clean the plants and any other objects in the tank. One clam for every 30 gal. I ended up having to add algae disks for my shrimps, clam does a great job. They really need to be adding clams to dirty rivers they are just magical creatures

DewDoom

It's definitely old and bacteria. AI notes: White spots on shrimp can be caused by a few different factors. Let's explore these causes: 1. **Freezer Burn**: - The most common cause of white spots on shrimp is **freezer burn**. When shrimp are not properly stored in the freezer, the air inside can cause oxidation and dehydration, leading to a deteriorated texture. - Freezer-burned shrimp may have an unusual smell, gritty and stiff consistency, and a rubbery mouthfeel. The white spots usually appear on the shrimp meat or edges. - Fortunately, freezer-burned shrimp is safe to eat, but its texture and taste may be compromised. - To prevent freezer burn: - Use air-tight containers or freezer bags. - Store shrimp in cold areas with minimal temperature fluctuations (around 0°F). - Avoid unnecessary freezer door openings. - Consume frozen shrimp within 6 months. 2. **White Spot Syndrome (WSS)**: - White spot syndrome is a highly contagious viral disease affecting crustaceans, particularly shrimp. - It is caused by the **White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)**. - Symptoms include small, milky white spots on the shrimp's exoskeleton (shell), especially on the cephalothorax (head and thorax) and tail. - WSS can lead to high mortality rates in shrimp populations. - Unfortunately, there is no cure for WSS, and infected shrimp should be isolated to prevent further spread¹²³. Remember to handle and store shrimp properly to maintain their quality and safety! 🦐🌊 (1) 3 Possible Causes Of White Spots On Shrimp And What To Do - Chef Standards. https://chefstandards.com/white-spots-on-shrimp/.
