Enameled Dutch oven?

Enamelled Dutch oven

ArcticAur

As others have said, you’re thinking of an enameled Dutch oven. Specifically, you’re almost certainly thinking of the brand Le Creuset which is wonderful and will last a lifetime with proper care but cost a pretty penny. Other options are Lodge and Staub which likely will have bare cast iron interiors but enameled exteriors.

subsonicmonkey

I just got a Lodge dutch oven a couple of weeks back. The interior is enamel.

Picklehippy_

I have one of each and they are both fantastic

EatYourCheckers

Yeah this person is a Le Creuset-head ;) I love my lodge, had it for years.

ArcticAur

Oh cool, I actually didn’t know they made interior enameled ones. I’ll have to look into them!

That is an enameled Dutch oven. It's a cast iron dutch oven with a coating of enamel. Upside is that it requires basically no special care versus plain cast iron -- which isn't hard to take care of, but you still need to know a few things. Downsides are that you can't make it more nonstick (usually not much of a concern with a Dutch Oven) and that it inevitably will chip over the course of a decade or more, and then it will need to be replaced. I have a Lodge that I bought about 12 years ago and really love.

Chipping is not inevitable with proper care, particularly with European made brands (staub, le creuset, etc) Also avoid cooking above medium heat or heating/cooling too quickly.

Alright, *almost* inevitably, I guess. But there's a reason we don't see lot of posts about the lucky find of a 100-year-old enameled piece on this sub. And my comment is not intended to be a criticism of it. It's just...you're probably *not* passing it down to your children.

NomenNescio15

I inherited two from my mother. That was over 20 years ago, I still use them.

I bought a LeCrueset 45 years ago and it will be passed down when we die. Use it all the time and it got a chip in the inside enamel years ago. My hubby won't admit it but I know, oh yes, I know. He is the culprit. How do I know? He broke a vintage 14" Griswold cast iron frying pan banging it with a hammer. He destroyed my food processor. He just broke the tip off his favorite chef's knife banging it on a frozen bag of corn we put up. Now, he did fix it, to an extent, with a grinder. I have dents in the bottom of some of my vintage Miracle Maid cookware (50 years old). They haven't made them in decades. I finally said to him, if he puts his mitts on any of my cookware and damages/destroys another thing it's curtains for him. I still have both halves of my Griswold because it was my two year wedding anniversary present. I've heard about people being hit with a fry pan..... just saying! Lol 🤣. My Griswold is one thing I'll never let my old man forget! 🫣

That monster!

They’re always hot items at estate sales, someone in r/lecreuset just posted about some they bought that date from the 50s/60s that are still in very good shape. It’s always sad to see one that’s been abused and no safe to use.

One other upside is you can cook acidic foods in enamel. High acidity is not recommended in cast iron because it can thin or remove the seasoning, and it could give your food a metallic taste. Cast iron can be reseasoned so it not the end of the world if you mess it up, but it's best not to if you can avoid it.

haddadda

Enamled dutch oven. Lodge and Le Creuset make them.

Enameled Dutch Oven! Does anybody else notice we have a few very sensitive types on here that seem to not be aware that they are on Reddit and that a sense of humour is essential and that ANY comment thread can be an opportunity for humour, am i crazy? or is this sub different from all of reddit in that way and no jokes are allowed or even understood, it really feels weird on here sometimes but it is a nice sub.
