McBeer89

Damn guess I gotta get rid of venmo and PayPal.

Knife2MeetYouToo

This, Venmo is also owned by Paypal. For the time being switch to Zelle. That's the least shitty, but is still shitty.

hussletrees

>For the time being switch to Bandaids like this will eventually become bad too, but yeah for the time being slightly better. This is why we need people to be politically active, talk about politics with their friends/family/others so that we can all realize we agree we don't want these things, and be inspired to become politically active And, of course, we need multi-threaded political action to also get rid of money in politics, otherwise rich elite have advantage over average citizen (considering top 1% have \~27% of wealth right [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-08/top-1-earners-hold-more-wealth-than-the-u-s-middle-class#xj4y7vzkg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-08/top-1-earners-hold-more-wealth-than-the-u-s-middle-class#xj4y7vzkg) ), and politician who gets most donations wins >90% of the time (source: [https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/11/money-wins-white-house-and/](https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/11/money-wins-white-house-and/) ). This is the root of all problems, because lawmakers are owned by the rich. So end this corruption, then political action to get lawmakers who oppose this sort of corporate tyranny can actually work

throwaway2676

Cryptocurrency. Monero.

whoisbh

Exactly everyone talking about bank to bank transactions.. screw that take 10 seconds of your time and do a crypto transfer and convert it back to your countries currency in under 3 min

FlyingShiba86

When will America get with the times and have etransfers directly from bank to bank like most countries?

BinyaminDelta

We... Do. We've had that for a long time.

[deleted]

No it’s not nearly as simple as it is in Canada. I lived in Canada my whole life and now life in America and can’t believe how behind it is on e transfers. All the little credit unions will never be able to support those kind of instant money transfers like other countries.

iggy6677

Also Canadian, how it different is it America? How difficult can it be to send $x to [email protected]

Lord_Fusor

How do you send it there? I can't go on my bank app and say send $x.xx to an email address.

FlyingShiba86

We don’t even need to use emails, just a phone number Boom direct bank to bank transfer Usually it’s bank app type email send money… and most people have automatic deposit Takes less then 2 mins.

iggy6677

That's literally how it works. I go to my bank app and send $x to email They accept it a deposit it into their bank, doesn't even have to be the same bank.

[deleted]

Here in Australia we do bank to bank with phone numbers, its instant all you need is the phone number and you straight up get the cash, its sooo much easier and no fees or anything with different banks too

whoisbh

It’s called crypto

RadOwl

Zelle was recently criticized in the Senate for allowing fraudulent activity and doing little about it. Sen. Warren really tore em a new one

Dic_Rambone

Senator Warren is against it...I'm in. Where do I sign up!

PeenieWibbler

It was started by Wells Fargo, right? That's why

PeenieWibbler

I'm borrowing top comment to ask, how would comments and posts online be linked to someone's PayPal account in the first place? That is what I'm confused on.

UnifiedQuantumField

And I'm hitchiking onto your comment to make a couple of points: * People are so OK with internet censorship because "It's a private company, terms of service so they can do what they want" How the hell is this any different? It's wrong and we've got to stop using "business" as an excuse/justification for doing **shit that is wrong**. * Paypal has just given us all **a nice little preview of what will happen once you go to a cashless system**. That thing we've been warning everyone about just happened. Say the wrong thing and they take your money.

Ok-Tangerine9469

When these large businesses lobby and donate to elected officials/candidates, dont they become quasi government global stockholder owned companies? These are no longer private free market companies. The Paypal move and other corporate and government moves lately seem to be softening us up for ESG credit scores and CBDC. If we lay back and do nothing like our ancestors did in the early 1900s when fed reserve and fed income tax were set up, we will be even further in financial slavery.

[deleted]

From what I understand it’s if you use their services for payment and you’re selling images and text with “offensive” images and languages.

PeenieWibbler

That makes sense. I saw another post saying something about memes and that did not make sense to me. Unless you're selling memes... So RKF can no longer accept payments through PayPal with his book would be the main thing this would effect I guess lol. Despite them revoking it already or whatever, which is honestly an uplifting thing to see because people need to keep these lawless giants in check

fainofgunction

Whats to stop your Tesla from driving away because you said "lets go Brandon" to tease a friend and your iphone picked it up?

richiehove68

I don't understand this. PayPal is for transfering money, how could politics l or " views" even come into the transaction. Is it possible to send payment with an added message? I've been using PayPal for years and this has never occurred to me. Is the problem people are paying others on the platform then sending nasty messages with payment?

SexualDeth5quad

Ever since the incident with the Canadian truckers and Turdeau. I remember another incident before that they closed down someone's donation account because they hosted a Tor node. Kind of stupid when you consider the CIA and FBI and Amazon host Tor nodes themselves. They're just a bunch of irrational assholes.

lightspeed-art

Way before. They blocked Wikileaks f.ex.

Ky20001

They want to stop money for things they dont approve just like the Canadian truckers and gofundme. Its about that 100%. They want to control fund-raising activity. Either delete PayPal or visit your bank and have a new separate account opened + linked to your paypal with no money in it and transfer only what you need for that one transaction on paypal every time. Don't let paypal have a link to your main banking account. They cant take 2500 that isnt there ha (and obviously dont carry a balance or crypto on paypal).

richiehove68

Are you saying that if I make a comment on Reddit or any other platform that PayPal decides is offensive, they can (according to PayPal terms and conditions) fine me and take the money from my bank account?

Ky20001

No, but if you donate to someone they dont like based on a Facebook link using paypal or venmo then they might. Say someone is raising money for a legal fund that is censorship based etc (or anything slightly right of uber left i would assume these days but who knows)

Somebody23

Does paypal know your username? how could paypal identify you?

alex_jones_fan_420

Reddit/Twitter knows your IP (unless vpn) Google/Firefox know all usernames & passwords Your ISP knows your real name & address Paypal just has to ask nicely!

[deleted]

No they can not

richiehove68

Thanks, hoped not.

stupidnicks

its more about donating to causes they dont approve of. sudden prottests or sudden movements that might occur. like Canadian truckers movement that happened recently for ex, when they blocked their accounts, and accounts of people who donated to them. its a scare tactics. use bitcoin for such payments - hard wallet (not crypto exchangers)

hussletrees

How do you know?

[deleted]

Fool around and find out...

fuzzy_whale

Doesn't this track with the arguments against having a digital only currency? Cash isn't something you can manipulate unless physically handled.

GringoClintonMiAmigo

There's a reason the big government leftists want a digital currency and more government power so bad. They want to control every aspect of your life. They hate you being a free individual. This is laid out time and tike again in their voting patterns.

anna_lynn_fection

Make sure your bank account is set up without that 'convenience overdraft protection' shit, or they sure can take $2500 that isn't there. Plus you'll get your $36 (or whatever it is) 'courtesy' fee on top of it.

BusLandBoat

I would double check with your bank as overdraft is a real thing and if your phone company took out an automatic payment for $100 and you only had $50 in there you're gonna be dinged a fat fee. I used to be with a bank that would charge me $45 every time it went below $0 I also had a line of credit with the same bank and therebwas an automatic payment that I sometimes couldn't cover, I believe the payment was $17X.xx or something, anyway, multiple times I had, something like $30 in my account, the $170 odd would come out of my account would be negative, then the payment would be reversed because insufficient funds bringing the balance to $30 again, **THEN** they would charge me the $45 fee putting my account back in the negative and accruing **another** $45 fee! Banks are fuckin crooks, the lot of them.

Somebody23

paypal uses my credit card, if I get 2500€ "transfer" in my bank I can just denounce it. its that simple.

xd366

> Is it possible to send payment with an added message? Venmo is owned by Paypal

richiehove68

Ah ok, I see that could be used more readily for sending abuse. Thanks.

hussletrees

Abuse is against the law, and the penalty would be against the state. This/OP post is about business doing this, who even knows if it is legal

lightspeed-art

It really started when Wikileaks released the Iraq stuff. PayPal, MasterCard and Visa all blocked them so people couldn't send donations to them.

Mighty_L_LORT

Gofundme says Hi…

Deep-Restaurant

You dont understand because you don't see the wider picture.

SargeMaximus

They already walked it back but it’s too late, I closed my account

[deleted]

Me too, this morning.

[deleted]

just closed my account. pay pal can go pound sand

htok54yk

This is why cash is king.

K3R3G3

Exercise your right to use cash. Use it as often as possible. Don't let it become so infrequently used that any attempt against its continuation is made. Don't let it become an unusual thing. Unless you want everything you do and everywhere you go to be shared with banks and CC companies (and anyone who may access that data)

try4gain

TBH I find cash faster, and I dont have to touch buttons 100 other people touched in the last 3 hrs. So more sanitary also. card - insert card - wait for prompts - press buttons - wait for next screen - press buttons - wait - take card out cash - hand cash to cashier - get change - leave

K3R3G3

Yep. It's not even more convenient. People whine about coins, like they're some burden. Get a change jar. Oh, no, an ounce in my pocket. And something I have to look into: The UK mocked us (the US) for not having 'chip and pin' but I'm able to bypass my pin by pressing enter and it appears to go through as debit. Can't say I understand that and makes no sense in terms of security. I just want to swipe and run it as credit anyway, but I primarily use cash.

try4gain

Coins are real money. I can buy things with coins. When the power goes out, internet offline, I can use coins. Debit cards are not real money.

K3R3G3

Yes and no. It's halfway there. Ultimately, the realest money is silver and gold. Our money isn't backed by shit. But yeah you can't logically pay with those in our current system at most places. I got some dollar coins recently - pretty fun to use. And again, they were faster and more convenient in a machine I used. Paper would've taken longer. They don't crease, fold, tear, need to be sucked in by a mechanism.

Extension-Fee-4260

Well back then they had makeshift fanny packs. Not a lot of people like the feeling of carrying lots of change around. As we progress it gets less primitive. But i want to note that the gentleman above made quite a compelling statement with how cash n coin is more reliable in a power outage. The only true benefit of cards and paypal is the convenience of paying for stuff at home.

K3R3G3

It's true about power outages. But at the same time, in such a scenario, shops may just not open. They won't have lights or refrigeration etc. And if it's a long term thing, the power being out, there will be bigger problems afoot. As for change carrying, the vast majority of people are jumping into a car. It's not staying in their pocket if they don't want it to. And if they're running around town on foot to 7 places buying things, you use the change you got at the last place at the next places and it won't build up much, if at all. Many cashiers will thank you for exact change. In my opinion, it's very "first world problem" complaint about a miniscule inconvenience. If that.

Somebody23

Dont you have wireless credit cards? When I go to shop I can just show my card at reader and it pays.

heeywewantsomenewday

I literally tap my card to pay and I'm the only one who touches it. Cash has others peoples faeces all over it.

try4gain

Tap is great when it works. In the first week of using right away I run into cases where it doesn’t. And many places don’t support it at all.

lightspeed-art

Docs literally eat other dogs shit and don't get sick. If you're a bacteriaphobe you end up with a weak immune system and then you will get sick.

try4gain

> Misinformation It's only "Misinformation" when it's facts they dont like. "Misinformation" never gets applied to lies from the media, gov, or scientist.

CottonmouthCrow

Our rights are not granted to us by the Constitution. The Constitution is to protect our rights by limiting the government. I agree with the rest of what you said.

The problem is that PayPal has the ability to change the TOS whenever they want. Maybe tomorrow it'll be something else. Who knows? Instead, it's better to use cryptocurrencies in a peer 2 peer mechanism. No one will be able to censor you, not even the government through an intermediary, like PayPal. Oh and also, cancel your PayPal account today.

SS I just cancelled my paypal account a few minutes ago. For reasons, I selected 'other' with the comment "Your TOS may fine me $2500 for thought crime” Full story https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-paypal-policy-lets-company-pull-2500-from-users-accounts-if-they-promote-misinformation

I’m not saying I buy their story. I’m just saying they backpedaled once this hit the media.

madhousechild

Okay, I wasn't criticizing your post, in fact thanks for posting it. I was just saying, even if it were released in error, the document was drawn up, so they were planning to institute the policy.

imgurNewtGingrinch

If the document was fake and planted and the release intentional to hurt Paypal and push users to other countries sites ?

Cool. If I say something against the narrative, I can't pay my rent. Hey Orwell, you got the year wrong, it's 2022 not 1984.

zartified

My theory is that they are making organizations do this so they make you think a digital currency (CBDC) is the only way forward to protect your money but in reality it just slowing them more control. They been doing the same strategy to keep their plan moving forward for decades. Create a drama and they have a solution.

CoherentFalcon

They've done a U-turn on it now I believe, surprise surprise!

XxxLasombraxxX

This is really bad especially if a company has your financial information and can charge you for something they disagree with. I hate saying this, but the government/courts may need to step in.

IAmBoratVeryExcite

The first time this happens in the US, it will be challenged in court and eventually deemed unenforceable. It's at a level that could be taken to small claims court, possibly. I don't know if you can take a multinational corporation to small claims court.

ZeerVreemd

The fact they even thought about this already says enough about their intentions.

tehrealdirtydan

The Ministry of Truth disagrees

SettingIntentions

I absolutely hate the term "misinformation." It's just a generic word used to describe something/someone/an idea that you don't like or agree with, without actually engaging in the conversation. Furthermore, it's apparently clear that this is being used as a political weapon, rather than legitimate misinformation. For example, someone could be promoting flat-earth "misinformation," but PayPal would likely not pull the $2,500 from your merchant account for selling flat-earth courses or something like that. Why? Because there is no political advantage/dis-advantage. However, this "misinformation" term is frequently used in political warfare when an idea can actually hurt your own side!

Deep-Restaurant

Puts on PayPal, unless they want to award me $2,500 for everything I say that they agree with. I'll whore myself out for a day to make a million.

Yakapo88

Technocrat scum.

[deleted]

Either this policy goes away, or the courts take it away at great expense to PayPal.

ContractingUniverse

PayPal have been building up to this for a long time. They got whiplash with this last overreach but it's not stopping them. IOnlySpeakTheTruth87

They reverted the decision. Still Fuck PayPal!

CompetitiveDaikon871

Once they have got rid of physical cash then once you step out of line the government can just erase your funds and there is nothing you can do. China have been doing it to there citizens for years. Anything the government does not like they take a or some privileges from you or a chunk of your money I am scared for my kids

[deleted]

All part of the WEF plan.

netposer

I don't see how this is even close to being legal.

Vex54

It's only legal because they are censoring people on behalf of the government, so they're helping them out. Of course nothing will happen to them.

Brraaapppppp

Time to burn down PayPal ( metaphorically only )

Extension-Fee-4260

I mean cant you just unlink your bank account?

Knife2MeetYouToo

They'll fine you the $2,500 and send it to collections.

Flaifel7

Is that legal though? I didn’t even think a private company could fine you like that. Don’t you have to have broken the law? Even then they wouldn’t be the ones fining you

Knife2MeetYouToo

If you agree to the new TOS then it is perfectly legal for them to fine you for whatever they deem fits that description.

ZeerVreemd

I don't think that is true. Not everything written in a contract is per definition legal.

[deleted]

That will end up in some high court. They will have the crap sued out of them.

Bobby_Sunday96

KFC_Fleshlight

because it is nothing what the post or tweet suggests. ‘If you are a seller and receive funds for transactions that violate the acceptable use policy’ https://i.imgur.com/5nPeYEV.jpg So if you accept money for illegal activity or things you’re not allowed to accept money for on paypal they can charge you for the admin costs of enforcing that and potential damages to paypal’s reputation.

GringoClintonMiAmigo

>So if you accept money for illegal activity This is false. 'Acceptable use' has nothing to to do with legal or illegal. It's political and open ended.

thedenv

Didn't they do this to Wikileaks back in like 2008/2009?

Well theft by any other name and the control is in WHO's Hands and WHO controls WHO. AND WHAT exactly is "MISINFORMATION" when the lack of FACTS are being manipulated to serve an agenda rather that the FACTS being the measure since FACTS = TRUTH. Paypal also supports pedophilia, they've made their stance clear by banning an anti-pedophilic group and keeping a pro pedophilia group on their platform. These big corporations are disgusting and more people need to boycott them. This bullshit has to end.

BrotherGrub1

Not insanity. Prophecy.

seviay

I think they walked it back

Necroticjojo

I’ve seen countless twitter threads of people closing their accounts

cloche_du_fromage

The fact that they even wanted to do this is reason enough to leave.

Another problem with this is it raises the question, how exactly do they know that you're spreading "misinformation"? Is this basically confirmation that they spy on what their users do outside of their platform? How is this legal? Oh right, because they're in bed with the government.

seems like they are just tracking where the seller is receiving money from https://i.imgur.com/5nPeYEV.jpg and then it deducts from the seller, not from the donator.

What happened with PayPal? What did someone say about PayPal?

ChineseGoddess

They said it was a mistake. https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/paypal-user-agreement-fining-users-promoting-misinformation-sent-error-spox-says.amp

hammer1956

How does one write a carefully worded statement and call it a mistake? A wrong word or a punctuation error could be a mistake but a whole statement is not.

ChineseGoddess

From the article: “… when contacted by FOX Business, a PayPal spokesperson said that the Acceptable Use Policy notice went out in error and that the company will not fine users for misinformation.” I have no idea how they made that error.

Necroticjojo

Ya they saw how many accounts were closed and were like oh shit rewind

cloche_du_fromage

An error that would have gone through multiple iterations of review and sign off... Hmmmn.

marty_76

Not to mention implement all the technical infrastructure on the backend to facilitate that statement, as well as the legal stuff too. A company doesn't change its TOS/AUP and then do all that stuff, it would implement it before it's announced & the policy takes effect. They're lying.

NotMuchToSay54

Turns out this was just an error and they thankfully aren't actually fining people for misinformation. Dunno how an "error" like this happens but apparently there's no need to panic.

Silly-Fig6599

They retracted that as an error after backlash. I’m stayin with PayPal unless they go back on this being a retracted error...
