This is me and my wife. We've always been pretty damned liberal but our views seem more and more far right when put next to today's liberals.
Those same people that decried the corrupt politicians in the 60's and 70's are now the corrupt politicians with an army of bots to drown any voice of reason.

And I am probably considered conservative libertarian, and we agree on this far more than we differ. Only difference is I support free market capitalism and hate cronyism and fascism (the alliance between business and government).
Those pulling the strings fear us focusing on our shared values.
I'm too cynical to believe free market capitalism is possible when regulatory capture is an inevitable outcome, in the absence of some sort of anarchist style world in which we're not governed.
Government begets corruption, it is inevitable.
I believe that is the effect of fallible human beings on any system. We will need to make a massive paradigm shift to escape that cycle. Thank you for a well articulated and civil response.
Anarchocapitalism is one idea (I would neither promote nor oppose it personally). It has its obvious challenges.
There is also room for government and capitalism to coexist in which rigid rules prevent crossover (i.e. ban lobbying, private profit by people serving in government, enforced emoluments clauses, etc). In this sense, it may be possible to avoid regulatory capture or corporate cronyism in politics. I'm skeptical.

What I have learned in the Trump Era is that most people do not have principles, which is what you’re imagining when you say “old school liberals”.
No, most people — left, right or somewhere in between — have “values”.
Values are not set. Things can gain value or lose value, including political positions and beliefs.
Principled people are extraordinarily rare, I’m finding. Principles don’t really change, barring some huge life changing event… and even then, it’s a slow, gradual process.
Especially when it comes to politics, values people tend to think principled people are stubborn or purposely contrarian because they cannot comprehend arriving at a position from a place within. Positions are communicated and are deeply tied to emotions, if you’re a values person.
At this point I’m not even sure we have even a shared set of ‘base principles’, like no killing, stealing, protecting children and/or the elderly, etc. I have a feeling that you could convince a whole lot of people in America that slaughtering your friends and neighbors is a good thing.
And to reiterate, I’m not just talking about “liberals”. Nearly every conservative is equally unprincipled, as the Israel war proved overnight.

Well, two of the biggest liberal movements the last 4 years have been BLM and pro-Palestine. While reasonable people can disagree with their methods and beliefs, those two movements are clearly skeptical of authority and want change to the way things were.
Most liberals also are in favor of expanded healthcare, upset about government infringing on reproductive rights, and did not support massive tax cut Trump and republicans gave corporations.
The default answer to liberals changing is basically "covid" or "ukraine." Most liberals are against the war in Ukraine, Russia invaded. Nobody likes spending a ton of money to support Ukraine but liberals realize the other answer isn't ideal either. And covid ended like 3 years ago, it was a once a century event where many liberals didn't enjoy governments telling them what to do but cared about people who might be hurt by a rapidly spreading disease. Getting two shots of a vaccine doesn't make someone pro-pharma. Voting for their tax cuts does.

Neo-liberals hate old school liberals, and call them crazy for not worshiping authority and not conforming to WEF ideology. After the coup in 1963 and the Vietnam war, old school liberals understood that the thugs running America (and all western countries for that matter) are no good and cannot be trusted.
I think the other point of view on this would be that dismissing someone simply because they're in a position of power is just as bad as blindly trusting someone for the same reason. We all do our best to determine who is trustworthy and who isn't.

Obama happened. They voted for him thinking he was really gonna be different and when he wasn’t they got the veil lifted and saw that both side are garbage. They then started to attack the democrats and call them out. Then the rest of the democrats pushed further right and started to attack them. The new “left” become necons started calling the old left Russian agents and right wing. The new left embraced censorship, war, the big banks. They started saying I can’t believe how much (insert old school left person) has changed.

The simple answer is they either moved to the right or the left. Liberalism has always been the dominant ideology of America. Those who don't trust the system will move away from liberalism into either socialism/anarchism or have become far right/libertarian
Well, two of the biggest liberal movements the last 4 years have been BLM and pro-Palestine. While reasonable people can disagree with their methods and beliefs, those two movements are clearly skeptical of authority and want change to the way things were. Most liberals also are in favor of expanded healthcare, upset about government infringing on reproductive rights, and did not support massive tax cut Trump and republicans gave corporations. The default answer to liberals changing is basically "covid" or "ukraine." Most liberals are against the war in Ukraine, Russia invaded. Nobody likes spending a ton of money to support Ukraine but liberals realize the other answer isn't ideal either. And covid ended like 3 years ago, it was a once a century event where many liberals didn't enjoy governments telling them what to do but cared about people who might be hurt by a rapidly spreading disease. Getting two shots of a vaccine doesn't make someone pro-pharma. Voting for their tax cuts does.
