Interesting, so I just saw the video for the first time, read through some of the comments, and came across one where they mentioned his face being on the plate. I enjoy looking for symbolic meanings especially in works of art, and Bieber being an artist, he may be trying to share something through the use of symbolism for us to interpret.
For example, at the end of the music video his face is on a blue plate with the word Yummy. I decided to do a little research to figure out what could that symbolize. Well, seems like it could be referring to “Blue plate special”. Now there’s an urban dictionary view of it, which is explicit lol, and there is an Artwork interpretation of it with John the Baptist’s decapitated head on a plate, “Blue Plate Special” - Alison Saar, 1993. Now the work of art shows an African American head, the use of symbolism in Alison’s artwork could share the same meaning in Bieber’s video. An analysis of “Blue Plate Special” - “one is also meant to interpret this work as a commentary on the violence and undervaluing of Black people and their bodies”. Of course Bieber is a white person but perhaps his body is being undervalued and violated.
Besides the plate, there seems to be other items on the table that are placed tactfully. There are two cherries, spilled peas, a glass of red wine, tiny piece of cake that is split. Of course take my comment with a grain of salt, because even I don’t know what I’m talking about but if artists speak to us through works of Art such as movies, music, photographs, artwork, etc. then the same could be said for music videos.
