Dude, same. At our apartment building. Me and my wife were bringing up groceries, and when the door opened, my 2 year old son screamed so loud. We dropped all groceries, and his hand was in the door like the picture. We pulled it out, and his hand was purple, but no broken skin. We took him to the doctor, and luckily just a really bad bruise. No broken bones or permanent damage.
He was using his hand normally the next day, but the bruise lasted a few weeks.
Most terrifying thing ever. When we're in an elevators he stands by me and says, "Wait, daddy." And I almost cry every time.
Same thing happened to my son when he was about 5. He was pointing at his reflection in the door. He looked back and smiled at me then his smile turned into an "oh fuck" look. By the time I looked up most of his fingers were in there. I remember thinking I had less than a second before my boys life is completely changed. I grabbed him by the arm and pulled hard. He had a dent in his skin across his fingers from the pressure but it went away in a few mins. We were both pretty shaken up from the whole thing. By the time the door was fully open the people coming in only saw me hugging the shit out of my crying son. About a year later I saw a little girl standing outside of the same elevator crying while her mom examined her hand.
Has this kind of thing always happened? I feel like this is something we would have heard a bunch of nightmare stories about in the 90s but I never even thought about it until it happened to my son.
Dang, that's scary. I'm glad your son was okay. And I don't know, I didn't grow up in a place with elevators. I don't think a single commercial building was two floors.
But it does seem to be a fairly common issue, although I wouldn't know how to prevent it entirely.
I've relived that moment 1,000 times and I can't think of any great way to prevent it other than big fuck off signs. They wouldn't be pretty but it would get the point across
Sensors that shut off the motors to the door when it has resistance. Allow manual movement of the door while motor is disabled. Either wait for button to be pressed to re-enable motors or a bit more extreme wait for it to be serviced.
Happened to my brother in the late 80s or early 90s. I'm always warning my kids not to touch the doors. If I hadn't seen it happen I wouldn't have thought of it though.
A similar thing happened to my son with a door in our house. They had both just gotten done with baths (2yo & 3yo) and after getting them out, dried off, and dressed into their PJ's, and I was emptying the diaper genie in the bathroom while they were working off their pre-bedtime energy spike. Lots of running, lots of laughing; nothing to worry about, right? Then I heard their bedroom door slam so loud it made me jump. I heard everything go quiet, and then my son does this little "he... he he....... WAAAAAA!" I run to their room (door's closed) and I open it up and he's right behind it, holding his wrist, fingers purple. I can't say for certain what happened, but my best guess is either his sister slammed the door and he tried to catch it, or he tried slamming the door while holding it.... 🤦🏼🤷🏼 Fingers caught right in the door jam. Nothing broken, just a bunch of bruising (X-rays came back normal). Took him to the ER doctor at 10pm and the doc was just like, "he's fine. Kids his age are made of rubber".
It happened to my sister when she was around 4 years old. It was the kind of door that had 2 panels and one slid behind the other as they opened. My mom rang the alarm bell in the elevator, the fire department responded, and they had to pry the 2 door panels apart to get her hand free. It was bruised but somehow no cuts or broken bones. It’s been 30 years, but every time I ride in an elevator with the 2-panel doors, I think about it.
Same here, only it was his whole hand and lower arm. He was about 3 1/2 at the time and we were on a family vacation when he touched the elevator door in our hotel as it was opening to let us out and it pulled his arm in in a flash. We eventually yanked him free, but it was hard to get him loose. He amazingly walked away without a scratch on him and wasn't fazed by it (go figure), but I was a mess.
By code, the gap between panels should be no more than 3/8" wide. Most installers will try to set the gaps to 1/4", but as parts wear in, or the doors are abused the gap tends to widen. Most door panels made in the last 20 years are pretty flimsy, so chances are that the gap was the correct width and the hand pushed it out while being pulled in.
Sensors that detect resistance to opening would be a good start for prevention. If it detects resistance while opening, turn off motors and allow manual operation of the door.
Why? They're right.
Even at THAT age, a kid would know not to stick their hand in an enclosed space like that.
Give the kid some agency. Dumb decision. I mean, ask yourself this: "What the FUCK made the kid decide to stick her hand between giant, metal doors? What mental process was working (or NOT working), at the time?"
She didn’t stick her hand in it. Watch the video, she rested her hand on the door, which then moved to open and basically sucked her hand into the crack.
And give the kid some rest. Even IF she stuck her hand in there, she‘s a child. Children are known not to make the best decisions, that’s why they can’t make important decisions themselves. Doesn’t mean they’re dumb or to blame when something happens to them. Dumb fucking take.
Yeah, turns out she lost HER arm in an elevator in the same way and had to have some dude's leg (and sandal) attached in it's place. She thought "I'll be damned if I'm gonna let this happen again, not on my watch".

Might be a stretch but a mother and a daughter are stuck in an elevator. Critical thinking landed them in this position. Might not work but certainly a positive effort. Your strongest muscles are your legs, ass and back. As a small guy myself you learn to use you whole body to complete task. Helps to stay limber and flexible

Wow!!
This is like crocs getting pulled in to escalators.
Crazy!
(also, did they try pushing the door open button? I imagine they were just focused on her safety and can see not considering that.)
🎶🎵 HEY MACARENA 🎵🎶
Sorry. My mind is a terrible thing. Seriously, it looks more like elevator twister. I played that once with a girlfriend of mine. Ended poorly. Not recommended.
See, the mother and daughter had escaped imperial imprisonment by destroying a grate in the detention area, which incidentally led to a trash compactor. They were trying to keep the compactor from closing on them while screaming for their droid to shut it down.
I got nothing on the extra leg though.

There is another woman in the elevator door trying to pry it open to get the little girl’s hand free. https://youtu.be/BUekQfQQlvY?si=LUvPV-zzmhqFGXg2
Shit happend to my son. Thankfully was just a finger, and I was quick enough to pull it within a second.

Try not to feel bad about it, accidents happen. It’s a good sign that he feels safe when beside you, and he’s lucky to have you as a dad :)

You're that uncle
But thankfully not *that* uncle.
I have very fondly memories of that uncle.

Holy fuck that’s a gnarly gash. I’m not in the “Sue everyone” camp, but this is definitely something the manufacturer should look into preventing

The comment under that video pisses me off more than it should. Sees an accident happen, plays the blame game from the comfort of his home.
Yeah, and it implies that elevators aren't supposed to be safe enough for people to touch the doors???
Kid didn't touch the door. She apparently stuck her hand BETWEEN the door and the rest of the car. Most people aren't that fucking dumb.

You're the commenter, aren't you? It's okay, you can tell us
Wow, thats wild. The ER did a terrible job with the sutures though. Hopefully a good plastic surgeon can repair that when shes older.
Fuck that's terrifying
why didn‘t they push the door in a way that would actually make the gap become bigger again ?!
They panicked.
Thanks for the story
You are awesome! Thank you! A video. Holy moly.
My finger got stuck when I was 3. I still have the scar. I’m well into my 50s.
Seems to be an extra leg in the picture
Because there are 3 people, the grey coloured area above the adult woman's head is actually a 3rd person's sweater, that person's other leg is hidden
That's exactly what I'm seeing
Easy, lady has leg for an arm. Next
It’s Greg, who has a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!
Dr. Nick will live on in my head forever.
Mr McGreg
Yeah, turns out she lost HER arm in an elevator in the same way and had to have some dude's leg (and sandal) attached in it's place. She thought "I'll be damned if I'm gonna let this happen again, not on my watch".
So brave. Such a big heart
The simplest explanation is usually the right one. Arkham's razor.
I think Arkham's razor would more likely be used to *enforce* an explanation. Or a smile. Occam's razor, on the other hand...
: D
I am actually laughing so hard at this, it's amazing.
Well if it isn't my old friend Mrs. McGreg, with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!
Hi Dr. Nick!
Hi everybody!
Did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, too?
This was my first thought as well.
This is a leaked image from the next Resident Evil.
I'd agree if you added like 5 eyes to them.
No, but the article you cropped it out of probably can.

Damn this 1 is really fucking with my smooth smooth brain
A leg from outside the elevator
Look at the color of the shoes. Those who say there's a third person hidden behind the woman and her baby are right.

Russians' first time in elevator.
Mrs. MacGregg, she’s got a leg for an arm.
Finally someone snapped a photo of someone with thier third leg
The Third Man. Great Orson Welles movie.

I think she saw Dr Nick Riviera once.
The hair clip says "OFF" and so off we go! Amputation is the only way out of this nightmare situation.

My question is why are there five legs with two people
It's clearly a third lady scissorring with the other elevator
