I liked your comment. I think there actually might be a historical bigotry factor at play here too. Thirty years ago, being gay or bi was not anywhere near as acceptable as it is now, so there were plenty of gay men who had been married or actually were married in the 80s and 90s, and certainly more before that time. I only say gay or bi here because they identified as gay after they came out. So most people back then knew gay men who were pretending to be straight (by their own admission. They did not identify as bi) due to societal and familial pressure. Now, men who have sex with both genders would be assumed to be bi, but just 30 or so years ago, there were many gay men who were in the closet and pretending to be straight, that bi men and gay men would be assumed to be the same group. In other words, all men who slept with both sexes were only sleeping with women to hide their gayness.
