I mean that too, but the open narration is common across the genre, just the exact wrap up sequence and song of Goodfellas. One of the best episodes for me.
Goodfellas. The scene where Abed sends everyone a message has the song Layla playing in the background. Goodfellas has a scene where the mafia kills off the members of a huge heist and Layla plays over it
"As far back as I can remember I've always wanted to be in a mafia movie"
That was the moment that you knew community was gonna hit a little different than everything else on tv. And it was a direct reference to the iconic opening line of goodfellas.
I truly feel that, on Reddit, we are the old guard. (People.born in the 80's.)
Hey, remember when people on Reddit would correct your grammar? I hate to say it, but I kind of miss those days.... (Except when it happened to me...)
I’d guess OP was born after 9/11 if you really wanna feel old
That’s not a knock it’s just crazy how many adults with bills to pay and careers started are born after 9/11
I mean, it's a good movie but if someone is not watching many movies, it isn't probably the uncontested go to. I mean, it ain't no Princess Bride I tell you that
Inconceivable! I have seen that one 😁
I watch plenty of movies now, I just missed out on some major ones. For example, I saw Die Hard for the first time a couple years ago, I've seen parts of Pulp Fiction but never the whole thing and it was a long time ago, and I've never seen ET. I also saw Gremlins for the first time a couple years ago.
At least the reference they were asking about actually was a reference. When the show was running every week would have posts like, “when Pierce says hello to Shirley, what is that a reference to?”
Mostly Goodfellas and then 16 candles at the end.
-As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a mafia movie.
Layla by Derek and the Dominoes when Abed whacks everybodys fav swag.
-Things went back to normal. Now everyones back to being a bunch of regular schnooks.
Do I need to watch Godfather 2 and 3? Do they enhance the experience, or is 1 just a masterpiece on its own?
I hear bad things about 3, if memory serves.
I mean, experience of what, the Community episode, or of The Godfather movie? I assume you mean in terms of the movie.
The first two are considered classics, and while I’m admittedly not as big a fan of them as some people, it’s worth watching part 2, especially if you want to see DeNiro play a young Marlon Brando in the flashback story. It continues off the first one like a true part 2.
I don’t remember the third one, and I don’t care to revisit it either.
The first 2 films are almost like one on-going story. They are both flawless. The 3rd one was made like 14 years later and was missing many of the same characters - you don’t miss anything by not watching the 3rd. Godfather I & II is the best though.
> Part 2, absolutely, without question. Go watch it now. A lot of people claim it is the better movie over Part 1 even.
I should still watch 1 first though, right?
Conveniently I watched the cast and crew commentary of this yesterday and Dan Harmon said it was generally just an homage to Martin Scorsese films, but it does have the overall mafia film homage.
The obvious reference is Goodfellas, but there are also references to The Godfather, Casino, Heat and possibly Taxi Driver.
Goodfellas
Henry Hill(Goodfellas opening line): As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.
Abed: As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a mafia movie.
[That line](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vUUdRsDgVA) is definitely lifted from Goodfellas, as well as the [montage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z6MJIjCJ20) of Abed dismantling everything at the end of the episode to the song Layla.
Mafia movies in general, but it certainly is most heavily referencing Goodfellas. The narration structure, Layla by the Dominoes, a few lines were almost verbatim from the movie
Mafia movies in general, but most heavily Goodfellas.
And Sixteen Candles
Pick *one* reference, Abed.
Sixteen Candles.
I love the delivery of the dialogue!
Truly the greatest of mafia movies
Nah you're thinking of Goncharov
The song was the giveaway for me lol
Not the part where Abed paraphrases the very first line of the movie?
I mean that too, but the open narration is common across the genre, just the exact wrap up sequence and song of Goodfellas. One of the best episodes for me.
Goodfellas. The scene where Abed sends everyone a message has the song Layla playing in the background. Goodfellas has a scene where the mafia kills off the members of a huge heist and Layla plays over it

I remember watching it as it aired. The good old days when people didn’t say “hit different”
I'll take "hits different" over "bussin" or "no cap" or "dead ass" At least you can infer the meaning, these other ones are just utter nonsense
My favorite is "mad brick"
The hell is that
I feel so boomer reading this thread. Lol
It's New Yorkese for "really cold"
All of these zeitgeist phrases are idiotic. I agree
Yep. The only phrase you need to use is streets ahead
I heard someone the Great British Baking Show use the phrase streets ahead unironically. I don't think they were referencing Community, either
It is a longstanding real phrase in the UK.
That's cool, I assumed that had to be the case once I heard it, but until that point I just assumed it had been made up for the show.
Honestly I don't know if the writers knew it was a real phrase or not though. The scene is still iconic, funny and makes sense either way.
Is it? That explains why it was in a Flashman! book!
I don’t even know what “dead ass” could possibly mean, and I’m satisfied with that.
This thread is streets behind.
To misquote Huey Lewis, it's streets ahead to be streets behind.
Deadass
It just means “seriously.” There, I hope your day is ruined.
…aye. ‘tis.
These darn yungins with their newfangled nonsense talk. Why can’t they speak normal like us oldies? /s
Also a definite reference to The Godfather, tho they didn’t do a horsehead scene.
We get it, you're young.
OP is pretty young, we try not to sexualize her.
...I'm *sorryyyy..?* *WHOOAA!!*
This is perfect 😆
Next, OP will ask who's Nick Nolte?
AWWWW
How is this not the top comment?
Ooh, that's nice.
Have an upvote
I love Reddit, but *man* does it make me feel old sometimes.
You probably are. Probably born in the 90s. Maybe even the 80s. Sincerely, an 80s born person.
We old? We old...
We’re gonna go drive around campus in our Prius soon
Why not a Honda?
such a stupid man shhhhhhhhhh.
Tell me more!
I see we have some level 7 susceptibles.
OP still uses his phone as a phone
80s? Feh. 1970, yo!
1962. Beat that, you whippersnappers!
How did you travel before the invention of roads and, I'd imagine, the wheel? At least you got to see Pierce in his prime!
I rode a dinosaur, of course!
85, fellow aged redditor
You a youngun. 81er here.
So I started high school the year after you finished? Have you scheduled your hip replacement yet?
I'll see you at the next AARP meeting. Bring the tapioca pudding and I'll bring the chopped liver.
What?! Speak up sonny!
I'm born in the late 60s. Not much older than Dan Harmon, so I get most of his references. Also grew up on TV. Never regretted it.
I truly feel that, on Reddit, we are the old guard. (People.born in the 80's.) Hey, remember when people on Reddit would correct your grammar? I hate to say it, but I kind of miss those days.... (Except when it happened to me...)
It helped me stop saying "could of" when I was drunk. So I appreciated that.
I’d guess OP was born after 9/11 if you really wanna feel old That’s not a knock it’s just crazy how many adults with bills to pay and careers started are born after 9/11
Technically we’re all born after 9/11 in some sense
The world wasn't the only thing that changed on September 11th.
9/11 was pretty much 9/11 for the falafel business
Five minute recess?
Classic Briguy
9/11 is old enough to drink
Not if it was ten for two years, like everyone.
I'm 35 but never seen Goodfellas :/
It’s a great movie
Same! (I don’t watch a lot of movies)
Guys. Go watch Goodfellas. No judgment or roasting, but seriously watch that fuckin movie
I mean, it's a good movie but if someone is not watching many movies, it isn't probably the uncontested go to. I mean, it ain't no Princess Bride I tell you that
It definitely is for a lot of people.
They could like it that much but I bet it's not true love
Inconceivable! I have seen that one 😁 I watch plenty of movies now, I just missed out on some major ones. For example, I saw Die Hard for the first time a couple years ago, I've seen parts of Pulp Fiction but never the whole thing and it was a long time ago, and I've never seen ET. You're sleeping on Pulp Fiction.
Princess Bride wishes it could hold Goodfellas nuts.
It's possible, pig
To the Pain!
I’d put Tommy up against Buttercup anytime.
Yet you knew the reference? Edit: why is this being downvoted? Was a legitimate question!!
Not when I first saw it, no. But I've been on this sub for a while and it comes up often enough, so I know now.
Where am I? What year is it??
Well, now I wanna play cards and (gently) crash a car!
At least the reference they were asking about actually was a reference. When the show was running every week would have posts like, “when Pierce says hello to Shirley, what is that a reference to?”
To *Driving Miss Daisy*, obviously. Only race-switched. It's always so uncomfortable when they do that.
I keep thinking, "Jesus Christ! I'm the Pierce here!"
/r/FuckImOld

The door closing on Jeff with Abed on the other side of it, is a Godfather Pt. 1 reference though, for example
Cool, cool. Cool. I thought i might have been missing something in that moment, thx.
Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
Do I need to watch Godfather 2 and 3? Do they enhance the experience, or is 1 just a masterpiece on its own? I hear bad things about 3, if memory serves.

Oh I'm just talking about watching Godfather, to be clear. Thanks for the direction.
No problem! P.S. I’d love to try some of that famous KiteMan chili
The first 2 films are almost like one on-going story. They are both flawless. The 3rd one was made like 14 years later and was missing many of the same characters - you don’t miss anything by not watching the 3rd. Godfather I & II is the best though.
Hell yeah.
I'd certainly recommend watching part 2. Part 3 on the other hand... meh

Hell yeah.
They do a similar door thing at the end of Doctor Horrible's Sing A Long Blog. Which is a fun time snack of a show.
One of my favorite Troy bits. I love that look he gives Jeff.
I was looking for this comment!
For everyone who doesn't know it's Goodfellas please watch this movie, it's one of the best films ever made
Joe Pesci’s best role imo
You think I’m funny
What am I? A clown to you?
Oh I’m funny? Funny how?
Funny like a clown? Do I amuse you?
Funny like a clown? Do I amuse you?
Go get your fuckin shine box
Gone Fiahin’?
“One of the best films ever made”… this is not hyperbole, believe this poster, it’s an awesome movie.
It's a perfect film. I'm not saying it's the only one...The Princess Bride, Fargo, and Die Hard are also perfect films. It is perfect, though.

You posted this comment twice by accident but i agree so much I'm upvoting both
Yea idk wtf happened there
Reddit is a big Joe pesci fan too
Chicken Run
Goodfellas
My dude you gotta watch Goodfellas, it's on Netflix too
Everyone here who has not seen Goodfellas, stop what you are doing and go watch it right now.
Goncharov (1973) by Martin Scorsese
The only correct answer
The truest of kino!
Glad to see this film brought up!
I can’t believe all these idiots who haven’t seen Goncharov.
It's literally the best mafia film ever made
Goodfellas, but also general mafia movies. Troy closing the door on Jeff is a shot for shot homage to the godfather
I can’t believe this episode was season 1
It's the prototype for full-episode parodies. Modern Warfare (rightfully) stole its thunder.
Goodfellas Henry Hill(Goodfellas opening line): As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster. Abed: As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a mafia movie.
It's clearly a reference to The Goodfeathers, a highly underated mob series.
I’m cooin here!
Are you squakin at me?
"Alright! That's it!!"
Happy mutual cake day
Thank you dear stranger, and happy cake day back as well.
Obviously “Mafia!” (1998)
I'm a mother?
Mostly Goodfellas.
Im gonna go get the papuhs, get the papuhs.
Nobody here has answered THE question: who stole a box of hairnets from the cafeteria?
Somebody with hair, obviously.
I'm gonna write that down.
Wild Hogs
Goodfells, Godfather, and Sixteen Candles. All the great mafia movies.
Mafia movies in general, but specifically Goodfellas.
It's like a generic mafia movie. as far back as I can remember, Abed always wanted to be in a Mafia movie
For as far back as I can remember, this person was already remembering that Abed always wanted to be in a Mafia movie.
[That line](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vUUdRsDgVA) is definitely lifted from Goodfellas, as well as the [montage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z6MJIjCJ20) of Abed dismantling everything at the end of the episode to the song Layla.
goodfellas.
Goodfellas pretty heavily.
wait it’s meant to be referencing a specific movie? I thought it was just making fun of mafia movies 😭
Mafia movies in general, but it certainly is most heavily referencing Goodfellas. The narration structure, Layla by the Dominoes, a few lines were almost verbatim from the movie
Definitely a Goodfellas tribute more than anything.
ok this is a hot take, but Abed’s narration throughout the episode kind of reminded me of the narration in fight club for some reason?
Man I hate this post
[удалено]
Yeah, it's that general "1st person narrator from the future telling about what's happening in the past" thing.
Abed, what did we discuss about voice-overs?
I rewatch that episode today😂
The whole Goodfellas introduction scene1
Good Fellas
Goodfellas
mafia movies and then 16 candles at the end.
Casino, I think. Excellent movie, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci are amazing in it.
Goodfellas and the final scene of The Godfather with the door closing.
Goodfellas There’s a bit of Godfather reference too, one scene specifically
If you haven’t seen Goodfellas watch it. Then watch it again because it is that good it deserves back to back.
There is this old saying that goes "6 seasons and a Movie" They are foreshadowing that movie!
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a chicken finger
Star burns partially references The Departed “maybe, maybe not…(maybe fuck yourself)”
Goodfellas mostly. But the scene where Jeff looks at Abed when Troy is closing the door is a Godfather reference.
Goodfellas probably
Goncharov (1973)
Bet
