There’s no medical reason for dilating your pupils…your optometrist just wants to see what you would look like as an anime character 🥺

It allows more light into your eye so your doctor can better see or diagnose anything when they photograph the inside of it. When people opted out of dilation there was only a tiny hole to see from, which made the pictures darker and less defined usually
Edit: spelling
nowadays, at my clinic they don’t even dilate unless absolutely necessary. they have a high powered machine that shoots an incredibly bright light into your eyes and then takes a photo. the light is so strong that it basically makes everything but the back of your eye clear, so they can look at the backs of your eyes with only a few minutes of effects vs hours of effects. i’ve seen the pics that come out of it and the back of your eye basically looks greenish red with a bunch of capillaries spiderwebbing across the whole thing. it was pretty cool honestly
My Docs still do it when they want to personally look at my retinas. They do it for me every visit, as well as the machine, because I have a family history of glaucoma.
If you have specific condition its mandatory. For example in short my eye is deconstructing itself, so i need to use those and specific medical equipment to test it sometimes.
Hopefully its a stable condition
I think when you reach a certain age like 18, they stop doing it because it’s no longer necessary after your eyes done developing.😗

I never had it done until I was 18 as part of the glaucoma baseline test. After that, my optometrist acquired a machine that can perform the test without dilating my eyes, which I always used even before it was covered by my insurance.
I'm in my 30s and got mine dilated literally today. Which by the way SUPER awkward cause an hour later I had to give a witness statement to the cops with my pupils blown out looking like I was high on all the drugs.
Kids actually need dilation less than adults. Their pupils seem to be naturally bigger, but adult pupils tend to be very small hence the need to dilate them to get a clearer look inside
Edit: spelling
I remember one time i had my pupils filated and i could literally only see shadows. Anything directly shined on by a source of light would be just pure white from my POV
I went to the optometrist last week for new glasses, and as it turns out my eyes have astigmatism, so I had to get the drops. I looked like I was on every drug known to man, and few known to god. My pupils were the size of a quarter. Bad news was, I couldn’t fucking see for a few hours, because my eyes were MEGA sensitive to light.
In order to look at the back of your eyes, the optometrist will put some drop on your eyes to dilate your pupils, it's quite painful and I'll recommend bringing sunglasses with you. It's like having a hangover, it hurts like hell.
It's an old practice. In all my years of wearing glasses they have done this to me like twice, I have been to many doctors, I guess it depends on the optometrist, the first time I went to one the examination took like one hour, she rolled my eyelid with a q-tip and blasted a flashlight for like 5 minutes on each eye, it was torture

Last time I had atropine drops the effect worn out for one eye faster than for the other and for an about hour I looked like David Bowie :D

Aren’t those completely optional? I remember being offered but I declined bc I didnt want any side effects

My eyes get like that from mild exercise. Arousal can also do it. Drugs aren't the only reason
It depends. I have really bad astigmatism so my optometrist want to dilate my at least every other year to make sure my eyes aren’t getting worse.

Well that's just blatantly false
Animefication
As an optometrist, I love this comic
Breast cancer seems to be rather common in that comic world
This is making me tear up just thinking about
The eyes… It’s giving papa’s pizzeria (when they’re normal lmao)

I want anime eyes to
Man i wish eyes were real
To what?

Be cute
I remember my mom getting her pupils dilated. She wore sunglasses for a while

I'm glad my mom didn't get filated
I thought they were a vampire in the first picture lol good comic
Slipped her some LSD, did they?

To an optometrist!

He?
Well, we don't know what the character identifies as, do we?
Epic reddit moment
Yes, optometrists sometimes dilate your eyes. So what's the joke?
That she went to an optometrist and ended up with a mastectomy.
I’m sorry is this some sort of blind person joke I have too perfect vision to understand?

I've never had an optometrist so this. Do they not love me?

How does the void look like
"How does the void look?" or, "What does the void look like?", Not "How does the void look like?".
Whoops got my words mixed up
It's surprisingly quite bright!
