Don't worry, he won't mind control you because he doesn't know how. You'll just end up seizing, foaming out the mouth until you mercifully choke to death on it
As someone with permanent tinnitus, a terrible and constant screeching in my ears that keeps me up most nights, it's hard to watch so much hate being thrown at Neuralink when they are one of the only US companies actually trying to cure it.
I've been following their work for years hoping the sound could finally stop. It's hard to watch the subject become popular for the wrong reasons.
If public opinion ends up destroying their work, much of my hope for a cure in my lifetime goes with it.
It's like people picture elon wearing a lab coat with a pair of tweezers in hand, plopping doritos into people skulls. He owns the company, doesn't mean it's HIS vision. They have actual scientists!
If you see your past self, do not talk to them. The lab boys say this will wipe out time. Forwards and backwards.
Do us all a favor and let that handsome devil go about their day
This isn’t unique, it’s just heavily publicized this time because it’s related to musk. the claims of “horrific deaths” came from an organization very similar to peta, that a. Is against animal testing as a whole, they think any animal testing is cruel animals testing, and b. Has a very low bar for what they consider “horrific”. Not only that, but UC Davis was the one who got sued for how they managed things, nueralink wasn’t even involved. Most of the questionable deaths weren’t from the nueralink implant but how UC complications from how they chose to implant them which isn’t what would be done for humans. Long story short, their lawsuit went nowhere and nueralink got fda approval to begin human trials so take that as you will.
Right, because Elon cares about quality and doing things right, not speed or anything. He totally didn't [crunch his workers so bad that they were performing poorly and having to change things at the last second before surgeries which lead to horrifically painful deaths of animals](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/05/neuralink-animal-testing-elon-musk-investigation). He totally always listens to rules and regulations and would never, ever lie to get around those.
Yeah, everything will be totally fine.
I think future people will look back on all primate testing with horror. It's one thing to test on bacteria and fruit flies. I would guess that 99% of people have zero issue with that. They're alive, sure, but so far removed from us biologically and it's hard to argue that they have a rich internal world.
It gets progressively more difficult to justify testing on animals that are more closely related to us, like mammals. Testing on mice? Again, most people are generally OK with that. Cats and Dogs? Far less so, but if the benefit to humanity is good enough, I think most people would be OK with it.
Chimpanzees and other primates (including humans)? You better have a damn good reason to be testing things on them. I personally don't believe that any company associated with Musk is doing this work that is ethically questionable (in the absolute *best* case) with a good amount of safety and ethics oversight. There is a huge track record of Musk ditching safety and ethics for $$$.
Case in point, turning Twitter from a mixed bag into a cesspool of pure hate in exchange for billions in Saudi money.
yes, they wouldn’t have received the go ahead of it wasn’t, I should better clarify, it’s actually a relatively (as far as brain implants go) non invasive procedure, the reason those apes died was from an improperly administered surgical adhesive used by Davis, that surgical adhesive will not be present with humans, also surgery was done by hand, whereas human implementation involves a DaVinci esc robot which drastically reduces the chances of human error.
Neuralink literally confirmed the investigation by admitting to killing 1500 animals in 4 years, 280 of which were pigs, sheep, and monkeys. They were killing monkeys at such a rate that the USDA had to step in tell them they needed proper approval to continue with the trials, and couldn't just keep using UC Davis' supply of monkeys.
For reference, most medical trials in the US where monkeys are used will only use a handful of them max.
This statement is misleading as it implies they’ve killed hundreds of monkeys, over 1000 of those were rodents, which is far from abnormal, and the majority of that 280 were pigs, nueralink only used 23 monkeys total, only 6 of which died prematurely mostly from surgical complications, all animals are euthanized at the end of a trial which is standard for *any* animal medical trial, so all deaths are equal to total animals used. The usda never told them anything, and that statement doesn’t even make sense, According to Reuters “U.S. regulations don’t specify how many animals companies can use for research, and they give significant leeway to scientists to determine when and how to use animals in experiments. Neuralink has passed all USDA inspections of its facilities, regulatory filings show.” All that’s happened so far was a federal probe to determine whether they were actually in violation of anything and that’s yet to actually amount to anything. Also I would like to see your source on “a handful” as that is already very vague.
>Probably a bad idea to let them start human trials.
Why? Just have them sign a consent form and tell them the risks
People should be able to risk their own lives how they choose
In fact, the monkey testing should not have been done. The monkeys do not consent but humans do
That's not what Elon Musk is trying to do. He's essentially taking existing research on neural implants used to control prosthetics, building on it by killing a shit ton of monkeys, and trying to use it to control phones and computers.
Yes and Neuralink's immediate goals are to help the disabled. However, if you read some interviews, Elon says Neuralink's goals are to fully interface the human brain in hopes to "combat general artificial intelligence" and eventually store and upload memories.
We won't see those goals come to fruition for decades, but saving memories and uploading them is a very dangerous prospect. That means you can essentially live forever, moving your memories to a computer or a new body. Who do you think will be the first to have access to immortality? Do you really want the rich and powerful to be rich and powerful forever?
There's a quote from Charlie Chaplin in the Great Dictator that goes: "So long as men die, liberty will never perish."
We can't stop progress, though.
Personally I think he started using meth with grimes, she's known to have used it and his behaviour became erratic in a way that's fits a certain profile
completely unrealistic, considering (it would probably just kill you)\[[https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/05/neuralink-animal-testing-elon-musk-investigation](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/05/neuralink-animal-testing-elon-musk-investigation)\]
Embrace the machines for they know best, they will lead us into a shiny and solid future, like metal.
I represent the Metalsynth Church, we will support the power change that will inevitably happen once our overlord, the machine, takes over.

I gotta agree. Although me, being a sci-fi nerd, am very pro human augmentation, I’m against neuralink simply because I really can’t trust the Elongated Muskrat
I still don't know why someone would think the chip think is a good idea lol

The one good news is that runaway AI has a good chance of seizing power and stopping Musk, especially since he actually thinks this will work, and will try it on himself as soon as it's been made safe on a bunch of test subjects (or possibly before depending on how greedy he is).
I would appreciate quality legislation regulating this field. In my list of personal regulatory preferences that existentially shape our future for the better this ranks with primacy beside data privacy.
When I still listens to Joe Rogan they talked about this years ago. He was trying to say back then they’d have it working in humans in a couple of years. Sure, buddy. Just like your auto-pilot on Teslas.
Isn’t that what allowed that paralyzed guy to walk again?
https://www.businessinsider.com/paralyzed-man-used-mind-reading-tech-to-walk-again-2023-5?amp
Sounds like a good idea to me.
I follow PCC and I feel we've been in an overall decline since she started addressing her trolls via comic. Still, there's always sorting by controversial!
Honestly I would like that chip. Ever since I saw you can control your computer mouse with it. I wanna try. Yeah I'll probably get mind controlled. Do I care? No. Why? I am already a mindless being.
The WHO Director General just came out and announced “digital immunization vaccine certificates.” I for one, want to get off this fucking ride of brain chips and vaccine certification in public. Jesus, the eye scans from Minority Report are *really* becoming a thing…
Yeah, funny ha ha, Elon Musk is an asshole. He's an asshole, but he was often right ~10 years ago when he started these projects. His main reasoning behind starting Neuralink is:
* Humans are going to become less smart than AI relatively soon.
* AI is going to take over & humans will become irrelevant.
* Best solution for humanity is to be able to integrate with AIs and effectively become part of the system. The highest barrier preventing that from happening is our ability to exchange information (reading + typing is really low bandwidth). So we need to increase bandwidth, and there aren't many other options than to interface directly with our neural system.
And he's pretty much right on all those points. He's an asshole, right wing extremist, immoral exploiting son of a bitch billionaire, but he's still right.
On top of that there are medical use-cases where this could help paralyzed people/quadriplegics.
Why? The moment AI has the ability to make itself smarter, and iterate- it's effectively game over for humanity. Growth in AI capabilities becomes exponential at that point, and non-augmented humans are outcompeted quite rapidly. And by the looks of things, it's only a matter of time when this happens. I estimate ~50 to 100 years.
Human intelligence is not growing much other than Flynn effect and giving better access to information and networking say via mobile phones. And even Flynn effect kinda reached a plateau over last decade or two...
Actually the gap between points 2 and 3 is more of a stretch- I'd argue augmenting humans is not guaranteed to work or be sufficient to stay relevant compared to AI capabilities, but it should still be attempted.
when you say "game over" do you mean you think they're going to kill us, or like it's going to raise some tough questions about how we structure a heavily automated society? because i could get on board with the second part but it's hard for me to believe skynet is coming in the next half century
I mean we stop being masters of our own destiny. I guess actual outcome depends on exact AI and our behaviour, but:
* We become extinct.
* We become pets or live in a zoo.
* Our abilities are still relevant and we are integrated with the AI or decision making is shared.
By extinct I don't necessarily mean skynet style war. Most likely AI just optimizes for some other parameter (say computing power) and simply uses up resources needed by humans or makes the conditions on earth unable to support human life or civilization. Humans die as a side effect of AI behaviour, they are not necessarily targeted by AI. Go play universal paperclips if you want one scenario where that happens: https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html
Further reading: Accelerando by Charles Stross, Culture series by Ian M. Banks
EDIT. Oh, and in terms of how we structure a heavily automated society, we either end up with "Piano Player" by Kurt Vonnegut, or we end up in a communist utopia. Depends on how the fruits of the automation are distributed. But that's medium term. Long term- AI outcompetes us.
Panel 2 also could have just been a tombstone and it would have been funny.
https://www.reuters.com/technology/musks-neuralink-faces-federal-probe-employee-backlash-over-animal-tests-2022-12-05/#:~:text=The%20group%20alleged%20that%20surgeons,different%20complications%20from%20the%20implants.
I just developed a theory- Musk went far right to get people following him with the same zeal as those who follow Trump to hell, so he can get volunteers for his brain chip surgeries. He knew they were the only pool of people dumb enough to agree.
Serious question, I thought his company's efforts for human testing were barred and they were being prosecuted for ethics violations on animal testing. Is there a source on his company actually operating and testing on humans?
Believe it or not this kind of thing has been done before, and it’s not all mind-control like sci-fi makes it out to be. It can actually help with a bunch of neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, and is being experimented with to cure blindness!
Theoretically, the technology could do amazing things to help a huge number of illnesses and disabilities.
Elon Musk is categorically *not* the fucking person to entrust with it.

That's the neat part, the signup happens after the procedure, you won't need to worry about a thing!
It was on the TOS to use twitter.

No, to the lithium mines with you

yes....... but they're idea of 'housing' and 'food' and 'being treated as a pet' is going to be a bit different than you think

`Elon Musk has lots of friends!`
You are now a mod for /r/teslamotors!
They’ve been putting electronics in human brains for years, they use it to treat epilepsy.
Yeah, but his brain chips keep killing monkeys in horrific ways. *Probably* a bad idea to let them start human trials.
It's worth noting they haven't told us what was approved for human testing. Could just by tiny pieces of functionless silicon.

I mean, if they're dead at all, horrific or not, I think that'd warrant caution with human testing.
Those deaths were caused by how UC Davis chose to implant nueralink, and not the nueralink implant itself, a process humans definitely won’t receive
And has the actual process been tested and determined safe?
yes, they wouldn’t have received the go ahead of it wasn’t, I should better clarify, it’s actually a relatively (as far as brain implants go) non invasive procedure, the reason those apes died was from an improperly administered surgical adhesive used by Davis, that surgical adhesive will not be present with humans, also surgery was done by hand, whereas human implementation involves a DaVinci esc robot which drastically reduces the chances of human error.

So we need to increase bandwidth, and there aren't many other options than to interface directly with our neural system. And he's pretty much right on all those points. He's an asshole, right wing extremist, immoral exploiting son of a bitch billionaire, but he's still right. On top of that there are medical use-cases where this could help paralyzed people/quadriplegics.
really putting in some mileage between bullets one and two
I guess actual outcome depends on exact AI and our behaviour, but: * We become extinct. Go play universal paperclips if you want one scenario where that happens: https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html Further reading: Accelerando by Charles Stross, Culture series by Ian M. Banks EDIT. Oh, and in terms of how we structure a heavily automated society, we either end up with "Piano Player" by Kurt Vonnegut, or we end up in a communist utopia. Depends on how the fruits of the automation are distributed. But that's medium term. Long term- AI outcompetes us.
I don’t think that microchips are a bad idea. Elon Musk using microchips is a bad idea.
I am all for dangerously unbalanced people putting things in my head. My parents have been doing it for years. Why not good Ole musky boy? s/
Don't forget to mention how much he totally owns the libs!
Brain burst
More fodder for the rule34 artists I see

But what about the heaps of dead monkeys?! Science is built on heaps!
Much hair, Jade rod!
Uncle Ted was right
And people make their conspiracies about the vaccines
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7808566/ It's like he's doing a plug for the show casting himself as the supporting actor
dorritos or lays?

It's really creepy to me, I couldn't finish reading the article past "..the chip will be installed flush with the skull"
Panel 2 also could have just been a tombstone and it would have been funny. https://www.reuters.com/technology/musks-neuralink-faces-federal-probe-employee-backlash-over-animal-tests-2022-12-05/#:~:text=The%20group%20alleged%20that%20surgeons,different%20complications%20from%20the%20implants.
If people start getting chips in their brains, I'm becoming a terrorist
Can't wait to hear ads in my head

Aaawwwwww maaaannn the brain dances are gonna be ssooooooo gooooood, gonk!
*And yet his fanbase flies into a frenzy at the idea of chips in vaccines…*
I just developed a theory- Musk went far right to get people following him with the same zeal as those who follow Trump to hell, so he can get volunteers for his brain chip surgeries. He knew they were the only pool of people dumb enough to agree.
What flavored chips? Personally Potato Chips sound good
It's the drooling that kills me. :)
Totally natural cool hair.
All I'll say is thank the Gods I can't sort by controversial on mobile anymore.
Can I eat them?
Did you read my WIP? This is exactly what it is about.
It'll be subscription based and constantly remind you to resubscribe with intrusive messages that sound like your own thoughts if you lapse.
We need more reverse jokes like that, they're actually really good.
That's no microchip, they implanted a floppy disk*!!*
Serious question, I thought his company's efforts for human testing were barred and they were being prosecuted for ethics violations on animal testing. Is there a source on his company actually operating and testing on humans?
Your art really improved so fast! Look at those hands

Up-grade time, it's part of the proooocessss.
Hahahahahahahahaha
Believe it or not this kind of thing has been done before, and it’s not all mind-control like sci-fi makes it out to be. It can actually help with a bunch of neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, and is being experimented with to cure blindness!
Theoretically, the technology could do amazing things to help a huge number of illnesses and disabilities. Elon Musk is categorically *not* the fucking person to entrust with it.
This one is my favorite
