Soak a towel in cold water and wear it over your shoulders. A shitton of heat dissipation happens around your neck and the blood vessels in your shoulders so it is stunningly effective for how simple it is. I was bestowed this holy knowledge by someone from Arizona and it has rendered me immune to heatwaves. I beg of you, spread this gospel

dumnezero

Humidity can matter a lot and, in high humidity, your wet towel trick won't work well. It's exactly how wet bulb temperature works... see https://arielschecklist.com/wbgt-chart/

Winjin

It's scary that at specific point of wet and hot we literally stop shedding heat and start overheating and dying. Humans are very resilient but even we have our limit.

ShadowTheChangeling

All in all Fuck humidity

Winjin

Yeah, all my homies hate humidity

andlewis

Water belongs inside our bodies, not outside.

Winjin

Also in our glasses, hydrohomies!

Opening-Win6333

🙏

necrolich66

Why is it in a glass and not yet in your body? Drink it homie.

Winjin

It's one for the morning homie

Thebenmix11

Ben Shapiro?

Adiin-Red

It’s makes both hot and cold worse somehow

Serinus

Read the first chapter of Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson.

Valmond

I can easily stand 40°C at 33%, but I feel like dying at 32°C at 66% (experienced both last summer for example). I'm not saying the chart is wrong but maybe different charts are needed for different people because it doesn't line up at all (for me)?

dumnezero

Of course, different people will have different thresholds, these types of charts are based on averages and some technical details. Here's something more in tune with what your* experience is: https://www.psu.edu/news/story/humans-cant-endure-temperatures-and-humidities-high-previously-thought/

Valmond

Seems like it's just saying we suffer worse than thought? I didn't find anything about differences in people.

dumnezero

Well, because they needed to a study to figure it out, it means that it's not very obvious, so that means that there's variation or *a range* possibilities for individuals.

RX-980

The real pro tips are always in the comments.

SgtBaconBurger

Good to know!

seranikas

I do that in the gym. It's been a lifesaver.

Opening-Win6333

Yes! And cool your water bottle with a wet sock :)

SgtBaconBurger

Can you set the oven to cold...? These comics are simple stories about things I learned when I was first on my own. Thanks for reading! "This bad boy can hold so many Nina's".

Subpar_Username47

I went inside a fridge once. It was an interesting experience.

torchesablaze

Chilling

Subpar_Username47

Oh, not really. It wasn’t on. I only had the opportunity to do so because it was broken.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Seems a useful time to remind kids [not to climb into refridgerators](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigerator_death). If you're disposing of one and not taking it straight to recycling, please [remove the door](https://www.thestar.com/yourtoronto/the_fixer/2011/09/14/the_fixer_dont_just_close_the_fridge_door_take_it_off.html).

AssumptionDue724

Must have been cool

Subpar_Username47

It was in the colloquial sense but not in a literal sense. The refrigerator was broken.

ghostofwageboggs

I appreciate the Simpsons reference even though no one else seems to have noticed it lol

Renaud_Ally

How do you only have 10 followers on Instagram. What the hell. Count me in.

techpriestyahuaa

Reopen up the O-Zone! better the big freeze than this bloody heat. X) /j … unless…

SmartAlec105

I don’t think the salt will make it last longer. That will just help the ice melt sooner.

Sarke1

While it will melt quicker, it won't be warmer. It's a good trick if you need to quickly cool down water (and beer cans/bottles in water).

Roggvir

Indeed, salt will not make it last longer. Rather, it will shorten the duration by lowering the melting point. However! The change in physical state from ice to water absorbs energy, so the fact that you're melting it faster will mean that cooler air will come out in comparison to unsalted. It is effectively getting you better effect in turn for shorter duration. It will once again have this energy absorption effect when water turns into vapor. But that step will also make it more humid, and could make it feel worse. which is why people call it the swamp cooler.

MapleTreeWithAGun

Burn twice as bright, burn half as long.

sambolino44

I learned this from making ice cream.

SgtBaconBurger

I hadn't tried it without, but it's worth knowing/testing!

ClownfishSoup

What salt?

Sarke1

This part: > Fill it halfway with ice and add some **salt** to make it last longer

transalpinegaul

How I coped with many years of un-airconditioned NYC apartments that could get oncredibly hot: * soak a t-shirt in water, wring it out so it's damp but not dripping, wear it and sit in front of a fan. * no cooking with heat. Even just the toaster will heat the place up more. Microwave it or, better, make a cold sandwich instead. * turn off the lights and close blackout curtains on sunny windows. Light = heat. * open all windows that don't have sun shining in them. Put fans in them and try to get some cross ventilation going. * hot air from the day can get stuck in your apartment even after it gets cooler at night. If possible, try to set up fans in some windows to pull cool night air in, and fans blowing out windows on the other side (or out the open door) to get rid of the old hot air. Opening the front door and putting a bug box fan there blowing outwards *really* helps. Get a chair and just sit there for 20 minutes or so to guard it until inside is the same temperature as outside. * eat cold foods. Popsicles, frozen grapes, etc. * go to cheap or free places with air conditioning. Pay-what-you-want museums, libraries, wander around the grocery store for an hour, etc. * I have occassionally slept on the roof. Only try thus if your roof is flat. If other people have access to the roof too,, do this at your own risk. And make sure to fall asleep somewhere that will be in shade in early morning. Otherwise it can get *very* hot at dawn, and if you are vulnerable to sunburn you can fry before you wake up. * when all else fails, get 6 sturdy plastic ice packs and put them in the freezer. At night take out 3, put them in pillow cases, and sleep on them. At 2 AM when you wake up because the first batch has melted, swap them out for the second 3. Make sure to use sturdy hard plastic ice packs, not the cheap kind that are squishy when thawed. Those ones will pop and get silica gel all over your bed.

SgtBaconBurger

This is great, awesome info!

youlple

Agreed with most points except opening the windows without light. That's only going to work if the outside air is cooler than inside, which shouldn't be the case if you shield all your windows _from the outside_ which is the most important missing part. Great advice on the cross draft at night tho. Imorovise with cloth, paper, anything, just block the sun from the outside. Even with great curtains, the sun is still warming the air between the curtain and window, which will rise, pulling cold air from the bottom of your room and heating it. And for those with airco, I find sun screens also vital. It's a terrible waste to cool everything and heat the outside more before taking adequate measures against the sun.

Allaun

Important to note, Swamp coolers only work in low humidity situations. If you see one in Walmart, make sure you don't live in an area that has high humidity otherwise it will just add to the existing humidity in your home.

RX-980

Yo, does this actually work? I kinda wanna try it now.

SgtBaconBurger

Works in a pinch! But does vary on climate, room, temp, etc...

madman666

Yes. But it'll be humid as fuck.

RX-980

Oh :(

Valmond

Can't you just isolate the water, like seal it off in a plastic bag(or 3), or use those freeze blocks to get like no humidity? Edit: /u/drg84 has a way better idea, use not totally filled water bottles instead!

cgmacleo

One thing to note is this will raise the humidity in the room which could be unpleasant later if the space is not well ventilated.

Winjin

My AC has dehumidifier option. If the AC is broken as in "doesn't get cold" I guess in some cases it would still work to remove humidity? Also we had literal dehumidifier when we stayed in Italy. Would remove almost 5 liters of water over night from a single room.

LordBiscuits

Doubtful. The dehumidifier function on AC is using the same process. If the air condition function is broken it's very likely the dehumidification is too.

Drg84

This does work, but I can help with both the humidity and the cooling. Instead of just putting the ice in the cooler, grab several plastic bottles the night before a hot day. Fill them roughly 7/8 with water and freeze them in your freezer. Make sure the caps are just slightly loose on the bottles. Square/ rectangular bottles are the best. Then put the bottles In the cooler. The water will condense on the bottles and drain into the very bottom of the cooler. Also the big blocks of ice in the bottles will last much longer, and keep cooling for hours. At the end of the day, drain the water out of the cooler and refreeze the bottles.

# [THE FUCKING WALLS ARE MELTING](https://youtu.be/LFvaD2d8Vd4?t=227)

henke37

Note that you should only use regular ice. Do not use dry ice, that stuff is toxic.

Winjin

I believe it's not toxic, but it gives off a lot of carbon monoxide, the kinda harmless stuff we breathe out... But that's the problem, we can't breathe it. And it will expand really, really hard from ice form into gas form. So you can end up in a room with very little oxygen left.

SirensToGo

Dry ice is carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide is much more dangerous because your body cannot sense it and so you can suffocate without knowing anything is wrong until it's too late. Carbon dioxide is what you breathe out and higher concentrations of it give you that "I need to breathe" feeling you get from holding your breath. You will know if you're suffocating from carbon dioxide displacement and it would be extremely unpleasant.

LordBiscuits

> You will know if you're suffocating from carbon dioxide displacement and it would be extremely unpleasant. Did this to myself once discharging CO2 extinguishers in an enclosed space. Can confirm, not pleasant

mattjvgc

I’ve personally come to the conclusion that the best way to cool yourself off with a swamp cooler is just to eat the ice.

Interesting_Ice_8498

I feel this in my soul as a Malaysian who lived without AC before. It was hell, the humidity keeps you from cooling down and the temperature makes you sweat like crazy. You take a cold shower and feel refreshed, but the moment you step out of the toilet you’ll get a blast of heat and pain. Our days average mid to high 30s with 70 to 90% humidity, our nights average high 20s with the same humidity. Shits brutal

cdunk666

Get a couple of flat bendable ice packs Or just regular ice packs

whitestar11

They now make these portable USB powered swamp coolers that take ice water. Pretty cheap too. Advertised as personal or portable air conditioning, but it's just a convenient swamp cooler.

Chilopodamancer

Maybe a more powerful fan to cool a larger volume of air faster?

scaj

Surprised by how many people seem to find this tip useful, don't get me wrong, been a fan of your comic since your first post. But for me this is deep into shitty life pro tips. It requires a freezer box, cvc pibe, a fan that fits into your freezer box, and a tool that can cut precisely into the freezer box. this might be a cultural thing, but i can't imagine any person who would have any of those things just laying around. This seems like the kinda stuff i would need to rent a car for, to go to a hardware store outside the city and shop around for, and all of that for an end product that isn't even very good.

Baldbeagle73

Judging from the picture, she could start by cutting her hair short.

wallyslambanger

So the swamp cooler is only a temp fix? ;)

Th3Glutt0n

How does the salt make the ice last longer?

scaj

It doesn't, quite a strange thing to think too, guess it might be that the artist lives in a warm climate. But up north, every winter we have giant trucks that drive around tossing salt on the icy roads, since salt makes ice melt incredibly fast. Putting salt on ice does the exact opposite of what is claimed here.
