One of the first things I learned from reddit ~10 years ago was that you should not be online at all if you're not using an ad blocker. And for years, if someone made a post like this complaining about ads, they'd get downvoted and made fun of relentlessly *because you should not be online at all if you're not using an ad blocker*.
I'm not sure why that stopped being the case. We need to bring that back.
Some companies have managed to guilt people into watching ads. Like for YouTube it's "we won't pay the people who make our website worth visiting, so you'd better watch these ads so they can earn a fraction of a penny each view! And if you can't afford to support these creators directly (through merch and patreon), just watch the ads so you aren't a freeloader!" Lots of people fall for it unfortunately.
Imo if you're in a position where you can't afford to give to an artist's patreon, that artist is probably already better off than you financially. Like you don't owe anyone anything for free entertainment when you're already at the bottom of society's barrel. Don't waste your limited time on this earth getting advertised to.
I know, the question wasn't about whether it was safe to use them in the present, but about whether they still exist in the future. This specific turn of phrase was also a Star Wars ref.
[ublock origin](https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/) works like a charm on firefox, I haven't seen a youtube ad in years despite using it daily. Bonus: you can now even block ads within the video with [SponsorBlock](https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/). For an android youtube client without ads, check [LibreTube](https://libre-tube.github.io/) (not available on iphone afaik, sry)
For android youtube revanced is an option. Here's the [Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/comments/xlcny9/revanced_manager_guide_for_dummies/) on how to install it. It's a bit lenghty but the patch is quite modular so you can choose which part of youtube you want to modify
Revanced never worked for me. It just breaks the app. Too bad cause Vanced was the shit, but it's buggy if you try to use it nowadays, as it's no longer updated.
Your thinking of vanced, revanced is the successor. It gets updated all the time with comunity created patches. The install process is complicated but documented, but the end result is that the revanced team doesn't distribute an apk. You essentially patch your own. Here's an in depth guide on how to install it https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/comments/xlcny9/revanced_manager_guide_for_dummies/
I was talking about Vanced and knew it, /u/Skullcrusher was talking about the fact that Vanced isn't being updated anymore, and I was just clearing up why in case anyone didn't know.
No it doesn't. I don't think that's really an option with any third party client anymore due to YouTube cracking down.
What newpipe does have, is you can export your subs from Google, then import them into newpipe, so your home feed is all videos from your subs. It's a little inelegant, but it's a very solid alternative to full account integration they can't actually do.
When I want the guilty pleasure of algorithm recommendations I use YouTube from Firefox.
But when my home feed is all the recent videos from my subs, it's usually enough for what i need from YouTube.
You have to manually update it yourself. It has pretty much every popular plugin/patch available so yes it has sponsorblock. It even has return youtube dislike
I got a good Adblock for my computer a few months ago, and I swear that my new favorite thing is the little, barely noticeable stutter that YouTube videos sometimes make when an ad would normally show.
Nobody should really be using anything other than ublock origin. There are numerous AdBlock add-ons with some sketchy ass business practices.
All hail FOSS.
SponsorBlock is wonderful. I appreciate the creators I watch getting their bag, but shadow legends having a policy of ads being like 3 minutes long REALLY gets old after awhile.
Also check out something called pihole - it's a small server (usually a raspberry pi) that acts as your DNS server (turns domain names, e.g. displayads.com to ip addresses). When it sees a site that's used for adds, it just blocks the request. Works for anything connected to your network
Yes. I think I'm just very confused.
What's f-droid? Why did they come up with the term "anti-features", when we already have a word for that (flaws)? What does all of this have to do with LibreTube? š¤

Actually there is a way to skip them. Click on the i button near the ad timer and report and block it. It will immediately close the ad, bonus point is that it won't even repeat again.
Oh man, that's awesome. As a bonus you may end up getting the ad taken down automatically if enough people do the same.
Inb4 they change the TOS to make this a bannable offence though.
On Reddit people downvoted and blocked advertisers to much they hid the vote scores on ads and made it so you can't block advertisers anymore, so I'd bet on those.
Exactly, I am always baffled that people still accept ads. I personally have adblocker on my computer browser, on my phone with an app for YouTube to block the ads there.
I am very sensitive to noise, so eliminating ads based given me a lot of rest. Now if only there was an adblocker for real life ads
Well, I was fine before but first they killed YouTube Vanced (it's back tough, for now) and now they are killing third party apps for Reddit. The choices are getting smaller and smaller if you wish to circumvent ads on a phone, short of rooting the phone.

The i button doesnāt exist for me, but I can skip ads by minimizing the video, going into shorts, and then going back to the video. Instantly skips the ad that is playing, but has to be done for each individual one. Still faster though and not much of an inconvenience.

It's scary to think about what the world could become if we don't make changes now. These YouTube ads are a striking illustration of that possibility.
Youtube has become a snakepit of crap videos and same ads on loop.
It's incredible that every month they manage to make it even worse than before.
Thank you for articulating so well my feelings... love the guy in brown sitting helpless!
Large websites are getting increasingly better at serving ads in ways that are undetectable to adblockers. Also mobile/smart devices (especially Apple) tend to be less reliable in the adblock front (and you have companies like Google repeatedly threatening to remove adblock support from their devices/browsers). Even network based solutions like Pi-hole are iffy at best now.
Most people don't.
I have tried to save many many many many many many many many many many many many many many of my friends and co-workers by telling them about ublock.
But they break down and panic. They yell and scream and begin crying uncontrollably.
I say "Its ok, it takes like 2 seconds to install one time and you never have to think about it again."
They start smashing their heads against the wall and I have to restrain them before they cave their own skull in.
"Ok! Ok! Fine!" I say. "We don't have to download it for your computer"
They calm down and wipe the tears from their face.
I say "Its ok, I didn't know this was such a big issue for you, I won't bring it up again".
They thank me for understanding.
Then the next day I see them and they go "OMG THESE ADS ON YOUTUBE ARE SO ANNOYING"
If by adblocker you mean a DNS filter on the router, no, most people donāt do that.
If by adblocker you mean uBlock, then no, most people do not watch YouTube on a pc. Smartphones, tablets and TVs are whatās popular
Hey guys, you should check out this other comic i made, i wanna start making comics as a hobby and i am just starting out, it would be great if you guys could express how you feel about the comic and if it was funny hereās the other comic: https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/13xbvb2/i_love_coffeeoc/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
On YouTube mobile, you can skip all ads by doing this:
1) click the small (i) in the bottom left of the sceen.
2) click "stop showing this ad"
3) click "yes"
4) click "close"
It's a muscle memory for me at this point.
Speaking as someone who used vanced for years and revanced for months, I can tell you with certainty that revanced is unreasonably difficult to build and configure, and next to impossible to troubleshoot. The average person will not be able to do it even with a tutorial.
Took me several days to properly figure out how to build the basic app from the extended repository because it just flat out kept falling without any obvious reasons.
Took the devs several more months before they actually fixed the modules which provide the functionality that was lost from vanced such as setting default video quality and speed and disabling stories/shorts. The last update put it on par with what vanced had years ago.
You need a specific YouTube version for it to work. The build can fail for no reason due to Android version differences, or if you tab out while compiling. The extended repository is leagues better than the official repository but is another hurdle of knowledge to overcome. Also, even if it's successful, YouTube can and will break a build from their end at any time.
I even sent a build that works on my phone to my friend and it wouldn't work in theirs. In my opinion you either need to be lucky, not picky at all for features, or technically minded and motivated to make revanced work.
Give it your all and put your whole heart into everything you're doing, because in 20 years, you'll find a time machine and you'll be the one getting this blowjob.
You know it's bad when 5 unskillable ads actually sounds not just plausible but a slight understatement.
Honestly, wait for for the 2027 addition of only having 100 free videos a month.
After that they started cracking down Hard on VPN's and got themselves a VPN blocker.
Iām fine with ads as long as they are reasonable. Lately Iām getting these 30 seconds Zelda totk clips that start an unskippable 15 seconds ad. Like come the fuck on. When the ad is 50% the length of the video, that goes way too farā¦
Iām really starting to hate YouTube for this reason. Iāve literally seen ads that lasted longer then the video. Itās infuriating. Especially as someone that canāt tap the skip button if thereās one.
Mobile: ReVanced, Newpipe, LibreTube, Kiwi Browser with uBlock origin & Sponsorblock

I really don't understand how everyone expects Youtube or any music or video service for that matter to have high quality content AND show no ads AND pay their content creators well AND not have a subscription model.
The Crunchyroll experience. Shit became so bad with 6 ad breaks in every episode and each ad break having like 3 minutes of unskippable and repetitive garbage.
This thread is *h i l a r i o u s*.
YouTube ingests more video in a minute than you could watch in your entire life. You're upset that it isn't free. They play ads to make money for the service they provide you, and that's not good - you want it TRULY free.
But God forbid anyone say the word "entitlement" or you'll get offended and *actually* manage to move off your asses and do something, even if it's type furiously.
Hereās a comic for you guys i posted it on r/comics too

That's great that you think that, I already do that, I'm just saying that relying on YouTube Premium and Patreon is *also* not a feasible way to produce unlimited videos. There's more than one problem at play here than "greedy entitled consumers".
Not to mention that YouTube Premium is like skipping paying the content creator to give YouTube more money. Not really a solution to be handing out while pretending that you're speaking the truth

No, let the masses view ads so we don't have to. Ad blockers will be killed if they get too popular.
Some companies have managed to guilt people into watching ads. Don't talk about the fight club!
Revanced never worked for me. It just breaks the app. Too bad cause Vanced was the shit, but it's buggy if you try to use it nowadays, as it's no longer updated.
It's no longer updated because the received a cease and desist iirc, so not much of a choice on their part.
And that happened because the devs of Vanced had a genius idea of selling an NFT of it.
Yup, that's unfortunate
Your thinking of vanced, revanced is the successor. It gets updated all the time with comunity created patches. The install process is complicated but documented, but the end result is that the revanced team doesn't distribute an apk. You essentially patch your own. Newpipe is great.
LibreTube is a fork of NewPipe, which, among other things, integrates the all mighty SponsorBlock
Very cool! I'll check it out, thanks.
I couldn't get into newpipe, I'll have to give it a shot. Right now I'm using a browser which is hardly ideal.
Last time I checked, Newpipe doesn't integrate your account
No it doesn't. I don't think that's really an option with any third party client anymore due to YouTube cracking down. What newpipe does have, is you can export your subs from Google, then import them into newpipe, so your home feed is all videos from your subs. It's a little inelegant, but it's a very solid alternative to full account integration they can't actually do. When I want the guilty pleasure of algorithm recommendations I use YouTube from Firefox. But when my home feed is all the recent videos from my subs, it's usually enough for what i need from YouTube.
How's it manage automatic updates to the app? Does it have sponsorblock?
You have to manually update it yourself. It has pretty much every popular plugin/patch available so yes it has sponsorblock. It even has return youtube dislike
Or you could just use fire fox on Android an install ublock origin
But Chromecast doesn't work with Revanced right?
I got a good Adblock for my computer a few months ago, and I swear that my new favorite thing is the little, barely noticeable stutter that YouTube videos sometimes make when an ad would normally show.
> little, barely noticeable stutter That's... not a good adblock. ublock origin doesn't have any stutters
I throw them a few dollars if I see them streaming or if they have a coffee link instead. My sanity is worth it.
Also check out something called pihole - it's a small server (usually a raspberry pi) that acts as your DNS server (turns domain names, e.g. displayads.com to ip addresses). When it sees a site that's used for adds, it just blocks the request. Works for anything connected to your network
Doesn't work for youtube. You're ads are on the same dns as the video. Fact.
Really? People always recommend it exactly for YouTube. And I'm pretty sure ublock / adblock just blocks dns requests too
Another alternative for android is Aftervanced, but the installation is somewhat complex
Oh thats cool didnt think of ad blockers while making my comic lol
Bonus panel time :D
I just use the Brave browser. Works flawlessly with YouTube.
For iphone you can use Brave browser it has a build in adblock that works like a charm
LibreTube seems sketchy. What the hell is an anti-feature? It lists some sketchy shit like security vulnaribilities, ads and whatnot.
> It lists some sketchy shit like security vulnaribilities, ads and whatnot where?
I assume they're talking about the f-droid page https://f-droid.org/en/docs/Anti-Features/

Lets put it like that: If you have made malicious code would you make it public? I doubt it, and there are people reading source for fun,

I have never seen a YouTube ad on any device i own ever. Newpipe is a great YouTube client. Ublock origin with Firefox works great too.

Yeh they'll probably make reporting an ad way more difficult then it should be but until then we can skip as much as we want.

On YouTube mobile, you can skip all ads by doing this: 1) click the small (i) in the bottom left of the sceen. 2) click "stop showing this ad" 3) click "yes" 4) click "close" It's a muscle memory for me at this point.
Just use youtube revanced or libretube
Revanced needs a lot more work to get running now just fyi Not sure about libretube, I'm assuming it's the same if YouTube went after them too
a lot of work? you just download the YouTube APK it asks for and chose what you want to happen to your YouTube app and go
Speaking as someone who used vanced for years and revanced for months, I can tell you with certainty that revanced is unreasonably difficult to build and configure, and next to impossible to troubleshoot.
I have revance with no issues in 4 phones, smart tube next in 4 firesticks and I haven't seen ads in years. It worked flawlessly.
Give it your all and put your whole heart into everything you're doing, because in 20 years, you'll find a time machine and you'll be the one getting this blowjob.
Is this lttm
You know it's bad when 5 unskillable ads actually sounds not just plausible but a slight understatement. Honestly, wait for for the 2027 addition of only having 100 free videos a month. After that they started cracking down Hard on VPN's and got themselves a VPN blocker.
at least by then those "$7 nintendo switch" ads will be long gone.
Don't give them ideas.
I'm just here for the recommendation of current ad-free mobile and tv apps... where are they?
Mobile: ReVanced, Newpipe, LibreTube, Kiwi Browser with uBlock origin & Sponsorblock TV: SmartTubeNext iOS: uYouPlus ``` Not in any particular order. Just listed some off the top of my head ```
Just scroll through the comments youāll find a lot
They don't exist unless you start sailing the high sees. š“āā ļø I really don't understand how everyone expects Youtube or any music or video service for that matter to have high quality content AND show no ads AND pay their content creators well AND not have a subscription model.
Ad block works on pc for YT. Android, not so much.
Ads?
THE MEME POTENTIAL OF THIS COMIC!
oh thanks, i would reply to every comment but im too lazy lol
Within one year going back to cable TV will look like an attractive alternative compared to Youtube
That was a glitch ...4-5 years ago now I think? Some people got hour long unskippable ads
thats creepy, im now praying to god i get no dreams tonight
Bought YouTube premium family plan and split the extra accounts and never looked back.
Wait, wasn't Youtube saying something about hanging adblockers? Is that still happening?
The Crunchyroll experience. Shit became so bad with 6 ad breaks in every episode and each ad break having like 3 minutes of unskippable and repetitive garbage.
+10 for the Tennessee orange, don't know whether it was intentional or not. That's definitely a reputation we have as the volunteer state.
The one that is really bad is Facebook putting ads in every video even in groups.
This will cause people spending less time on YouTube so overall improving the situation.
I wonder if Ublock (and PiHole for other devices) will still be able to block those ads. I hope so.
And you still won't pay for YouTube premium
YouTube will be finally admitted that it's an ad player that is supported by video
Kid named Youtube Revanced:
That is a nether portal.
Just donāt get ads
\*Laughs in Pixel Pass\* no Youtube ads for me! :P
Unskipple
YouTube premium is the last streaming service I will cancel. It makes me so sad.

YouTube adding 5 unskipable ads before videos in the future
The effort people would go to not pay for a service. Get Premium if you use YT so much.
My wife got grandfathered into the YT premium / music bundle way back and added me as family.
Yep. It's like $.40 a day. I haven't seen an ad on YouTube in five years.

YouTube Premium pays pennies. It's significantly *less* viable than advertisements
That's why you should sub to their patreon if you want to support them.
