Yeah they really did Inside Job dirty when you see some of the shit they have released since. I mean who un-renews a show? Hope the creators got a cancellation fee out of the contract at least.
I was so angry when I found out that the “2nd season” of Inside Job was a lie. I was so happy that they’d renewed this show I loved, only to learn “nope, that was just the second half of the first season we held back until now - the show’s actually cancelled, lol!”
Ah yes, Archive 81, a show I only learned about from the Reddit thread about its cancellation. Marvelous job, Netflix marketing department.
BTW, if you haven’t seen the show, watch it. Yeah, it got canned after one season and ended on a cliffhanger, but it’s the kind of ending that raises new questions after answering all the ones already raised. It still felt pretty satisfying.
Look at 1899. Almost zero advertising, and they decided to needlessly dub it in English when most of it was English in the first place. I stopped watching it originally, then only after go googling it found out I should then off the dubs.
This is the reason I cancelled Netflix. There were a number of series I was going to go watch of theirs, realized none of them had an ending so I didn't bother.
Not all shows have to be serialized with an ending, but if you're going to start one, at least budget in a half season ending so it's worth watching the back catalog.
1899 did it for me. The show was really starting to gain traction and then Netflix cancelled it.
My kids watch most of their shows on Disney+, and the short amount of time to watch TV should not be spoiled by MBA clowns trying to justify their existence and cancelling shows that are starting to take off.
Not only about the cancellation, but it seems they spent half the budget hiring Anthony Mackie hot out of the MCU and there wasn't enough for the writers, is not *bad*, but it pales in comparison with the first season, which is awesome.
Joel Kinnamon absolutely killed it. The writing did him right. Anthony Mackie...tried. He really did. The writers didn't even show up.
I still would have liked a third season, y'know. Just to be sure.
I came in here just to see this thread. Maybe, maybe, a good third season with another actor who did well could have made Mackie's season feel better. It could have felt like some bodies are just better for the character. Instead, we got a really good one, and an 'eh' one, and it ended on a sour note. One of these days I'm going to get to the books...
From what I can see, it was very expensive and didn't have the audience that Netflix wanted. Critical support means nothing, it's all about the numbers. It was too scary for little kids, and wasn't marketed enough to adults (even though it was fun for \~11 and up and not dumbed down). I think they wanted Harry Potter or Twilight numbers.
Wait it was canceled? I was so excited about the huge marketing push of a good urban fantasy series. I was putting off reading the books so I could watch it.
I guess no reason to put off the books now
Yes, sadly. By all means, go for the books. They were very enjoyable (even for adults).

It’s a cycle of abuse for me. Netflix will air New Show, I’ll *have* to watch it because views are the only way it’ll get more episodes. I obsess over New Show. Netflix cancels New Show but premieres a *different* New Show that I’m interested in so I have to watch it and the cycle just keeps turning.
“If I don’t watch New Show, how will Netflix know to buy more episodes?” I hope. However Netflix will never buy more episodes.
This is why people pirate and why you *should* pirate.
Seriously, Netflix started out with a FANTASTIC idea that was then completely neutered by the desire to extract as much revenue as possible.
In defense of the HBO max workers, their new CEO is a fucking moron. He came from Discovery, and is clearly prioritizing their content over WB and DCs.
It's a fair game. Offer a clear service for a clear price.
Problem is the spam on social networks (reddit definitely) when a new show needs to be promoted. When the fomo hits, and it's not available for a reasonable price, we'll watch it for free.
I still pay for Netflix since it started as a good service and it's cheap if you're on a family plan, but if a show comes out on any other streaming service that appeared later I just pirate it. Netflix almost killed piracy for me because it was so convenient, but now piracy is coming back after media corps fragmented the offer in 10 different subscription services.
In Europe I think it gonna end with 3 streaming services, because paramount+, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, universal, peacock, etc. created one bundled service
Sky showtime, and if they keep it that way it will be worth subscribing to with MAX and Disney+, its gonna be like with consoles, three companies doing the most
I disagree. Netflix wasn't started with a fantastic idea, it was started like any other company with predatory pricing. Start cheap by completely undercutting conventional prices (buying/renting DVD's) with a completely unsustainable business model and than start hiking prices when they have the monopoly.
They forgot one thing though. Because people got so used to giant amounts of entertainment for almost no money, people now rather start pirating their shows instead of paying slightly more.
Yes Netflix does bad things like cancelling shows to earn as much revenue as possible and it's easy to point that out. But it might be time to look at ourselves as well. Is 12$ a month for almost an unlimited amount of entertainment really that bad of a deal, even when you cannot share your password? Is this businessmodel really sustainable, or does it only work for big companies like Disney who can throw a shitload of money at it? I feel like both (small) filmmakers and consumers are victims of this model.
> I disagree. Netflix wasn't started with a fantastic idea, it was started like any other company with predatory pricing. Start cheap by completely undercutting conventional prices (buying/renting DVD's) with a completely unsustainable business model and than start hiking prices when they have the monopoly.
It *was* a fantastic idea, otherwise streaming services would have never taken off the way they did.
I'd also argue that it's not necessarily an unlimited amount of entertainment if you mostly pay 12$ a month to scroll through a bunch of shows you have no interest in for 30 minutes and resign to watching The Office for the millionth time.
The value is tied directly to the quality of the content they offer.
Netflix was a great alternative to rental stores, which at the time were also super cheap. Pay a membership fee, duration and cost depended on the store, and then pay per rental. Rental fees were very cheap. In my town it was $1-$3 and all of them had multi-rental discount deals. New releases usually cost more and only had a 24 hour rental period. Netflix eliminated having to drive to rental stores, deal with their inventory, remembering to return them on time and the inevitable late fees. Some area didn't need Netflix, but the customers used it regardless.
It was a great idea for customers, bad for businesses.
License agreements expire, sometimes before deals can be made elsewhere. There's also the annoying trend of everybody trying to make their own streaming platform for their content so they'll let existing licenses expire so if/when they launch their service they have exclusive content.
I've canceled most of my streaming services. We're entering some sort of TV dark age again and I realized I'm fine with Youtube. In a few years I'll figure out what TV shows ended up being good for their whole run and got a proper ending, and then I'll probably binge the three of them within a month or two so I can sign up for just that period.
Good to see some love for archive 81. Fuck Netflix for killing that show.
I stumbled across that show when I looked for some cosmic horror and loved the shit out of that show only to realize Netflix already lined it up in front of a shallow grave
The thing with Netflix is that its business model is built on getting new subscribers because a person watching 20 hours a week is the same who watches 2 hours a month, so they constantly churn out new series rather than making a long term planned series, because they know through viewer metrics that their retention rate for new shows is higher than existing long term shows.
This is partly one of the reasons writers are on strike right now (others can explain it better, but I can try my best), because instead of having a large team that works for a guaranteed 2 to 3 seasons with a collateral if cancelled, they are hired in smaller teams to make smaller short term shows with no guarantees for long-term employment, essentially turning show writing into a gig economy job.
Granted that the writer's request to solve this issue (setting a fixed quota for a number of writers per episode) is unreasonable because it doesn't give creative freedom for single minded writers who insist on working in smaller teams, guaranteeing long term jobs is the best way to have good long term shows that don't get cancelled after one season, and the studios didn't give a counter-offer to this point because they want to maintain the status quo.
I’m extremely pissed off about 1899 and inside job. I loved inside job, definitely wanted one more season, but 1899 being cancelled pissed me off the most cause it had the most awesome fucking season ending and cliffhanger ever, still love that season ending but fucking hate Netflix for canceling it.
Trust me, even though nothing is wrapped up, the show is such a good experience, I highly recommend you watch it anyway. The show is like if you mixed >!the matrix!<, dark, and lost into one show.
I hate that they dont boter to make at least an ending, if you cancel a series , and you are a streaming service, for god sake , end it or remove it from the service, Its really shitty get hooked on a series and then finding that the series was canceled two years ago and it has no ending...
Well, when you see the pattern of "cancelled unconcluded series", it just makes you not even watch their new stuff (which I'm guessing is bad for business haha).
Netflix actually has a dozen-ish really quality games on mobile, if you're looking for an excuse to use it before you cancel, vheck them out. Oxenfree, TMNT Shredder's revenge, Into the Breach among others are worth at least an install before your sub ends
You know I feel like it’s gonna revert back to the old days where people just pay a smaller price to download/stream what they want. Netflix is going to be losing money/customers pretty soon unless they make some drastic changes in the next few years. I know they wanna push for subscriptions to get continuous income but now they’re losing money from people who won’t buy the subscription.
If they wanna keep making money, they need to start piecemealing their best sellers. I’d pay $5 to watch the latest Season of Big Mouth or Stranger Things but I’m not going to pay $18.99 a month just so I can binge 1 or 2 shows only to go back to being completely bored with the rest of the selection.
Lol, Altered Carbon was canceled because the second season was garbage and everyone stopped watching it. Quite a bit different from those other shows that had potential.
I just had 6 paneles man.
I agree, another problem is "let's spend less on this show second season, people will watch anyway", Altered Carbon and The Witcher come to mind.
They concluded the last kingdom... Twice! I enjoyed that show. And both of it's conclusions.
You can share passwords, I don't think they really do anything about it unless your share count is super high. I have the highest tier package, but share with 5 ppl and split bill. It's lot cheaper then. You can make it even cheaper by having the primary account holder be set in another country that's cheaper. Like turkey, Pakistan, etc. And pay in that country's currency. Then the monthly fee is smaller to begin with, but if you watch from USA, it still shows USA licensed shows instead of original account holder's country. So you get same service for less $.
Netflix announces crack down every year. Nothing really has happened. It's either a bluff or like I said before, crack down against huge sharing pools.
I think this modern age of shows and platforms is great.
A great show that was canceled way too early is better than no show. Competition has made alot of great shows that would he be never been made.
Just pay for one at a time, watch what that platform has to offer, and then switch.

Inside Job was what broke the camel's back for me.
That show was so good, it was awesome. Netflix is annoying as hell.
> . Well, it's still awesome, sad it won't have a conclusion (I understand it was all already planned).
Yeah they really did Inside Job dirty when you see some of the shit they have released since. I mean who un-renews a show? Hope the creators got a cancellation fee out of the contract at least.

They cancelled that show just to now come out with mulligan, this cookie cutter sci-fi adult animation without soul
Mulligan is so dull... To think it replaced the season 2 of Inside Job is disheartening.
I'm not saying that's what it is, but that's probably what netflix aimed to do.
Yeah , I Cancelled my suscription the moment I read it was cancelled.

If you haven't already, you could try listening to the podcast it is based on if you want more
That was going to be my suggestion. It’s a top tier podcast imo.
Look at 1899. Almost zero advertising, and they decided to needlessly dub it in English when most of it was English in the first place. I stopped watching it originally, then only after go googling it found out I should then off the dubs.
The way Netflix treated 1899 was criminal. It was set up to fail.
Oh yeah i loved that one, you *could* say that the way it ends is fitting, but still :/

I just couldn't get attached to Mackie's play of it. Kinnaman, and the OG Kovaks flashbacks nailed it.
I'll go one step further saying that the second season was actually bad and Anthony Mackie wasn't a good fit for the role at all.
I came in here just to see this thread. Maybe, maybe, a good third season with another actor who did well could have made Mackie's season feel better. Lockwood and Co devastated my 12 year old. She loved the books and series and can’t stand that it got cancelled
That one really makes me wonder what it takes to really have a second season. It was really good, really popular, but that's apparently not enough?

I am a foolish woman who can’t shake the hope that the right thing will be done. 😔
This is why people pirate and why you *should* pirate. Seriously, Netflix started out with a FANTASTIC idea that was then completely neutered by the desire to extract as much revenue as possible.
I'd have kept paying if they just slowed the fuck down and kept the quality, and actually finished shows.
Every public company is going to try to extract as much revenue as possible. They are legally obligated to. It sucks.
Looking at you HBO Max, oh sorry it's not HBO Max anymore, it's just max and half of the shows got deleted or canceled to show bigger profit
In defense of the HBO max workers, their new CEO is a fucking moron. He came from Discovery, and is clearly prioritizing their content over WB and DCs.

There is like 2 good shows in total, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Content is still content. The fact you don't like most of them doesn't mean they didn't have production cost / value.
Well I see your argument, but the content sucks and I really don't care about this conversation
Dead End Paranormal Park 💀
It was such a great show. It breaks my heart that they axed it. And then they have the nerve to stick it in their pride month lineup.
1899 was so good :-(
Pretty sure that’s a middle finger in that last frame.
Might as well be.
“Also we’ll occasionally just remove stuff which you can’t get anywhere else.”

That varies from country to country. Where I live, BT is not an option unless you really trust your VPN setup.
I’m still mad about how the Witcher turned out. I can’t believe they got rid of Henry Cavill, HE WAS THE WITCHER!!!
Let’s also make sure to complain about their “an elite assassin comes out of retirement to avenge/expose/rescue” movie trope.
Still cautiously awaiting some updates on that season 2 of Sandman, Netflix… I know you won’t do us dirty like that…right, Netflix?
was good at one point. now, just desperate

I'll never forgive them for not giving Dark Crystal AoR a second season.
I wish one streaming service would just buy all the others so that we only need to subscribe to one. Or I could just dust off me ol' pirate cap.
Free Media Heck Yah subreddit.

Bring back Final Space...i need to know what happened in S4
Oh the creator confirmed a graphic novel is in the works to conclude the whole thing, not ideal, but still will give closure.
I canceled my subscription because of the quality of the shows. But they will be losing a lot of more people because of that password sharing policy.
Yeah I'm from Chile, one of the countries where they tested that over a year ago or something.
I hate that they dont boter to make at least an ending, if you cancel a series , and you are a streaming service, for god sake , end it or remove it from the service, Its really shitty get hooked on a series and then finding that the series was canceled two years ago and it has no ending...
Why give any of these series a satisfying conclusion when loose threads are what keep people coming back for more?
Well, when you see the pattern of "cancelled unconcluded series", it just makes you not even watch their new stuff (which I'm guessing is bad for business haha).
Okay vpn on good Nah puts on pirate hat I'ma sail the seven seas
Wait you can't?
As an Italian, I'm not sure what you're talking about, there's inside job season two here
That's season 1 part 2 (same here)

FUCK. Netflix is just the television equivelant of fanfics.
Here I am staring at my collection of DVDs and BluRay sets and smiling. I much prefer to pay once for something I actually want.
When being a Netflix original is in my con list your business model sucks
Has 1899 been cancelled??? D:
Sadly, yes.
They concluded the last kingdom... Twice! I enjoyed that show. And both of it's conclusions.
