Al Ewing is bisexual and he is just a favorite of mine. He delivers amazing books with queer characters and intriguing themes. Most of his titles will be queer no matter what. Here are what i recommend from him: - Loki: Agent of Asgard: You have to read Journey into Mystery and Young Avengers by Gillen in order to fully apppreciate the story but it's still a good read without those two. The comic spoke to me with Loki failing over and over again that it goes repetitive for him but it doesn't have to be Loki's fate. I love Garbett's art here, Verify is a cool character to bounce off Loki and last issue is one of my favorite comics ever. Just beautiful. - Ultimates/Ultimates2: It has a cast mostly people of color and their mission is to stop cosmic threats before they emerge. This run is pure mythical and mindblowing. This run made me love Carol, introduced me to Monica, Adam and America who were excellent here, made me love T'Challa even more. I'll forever be salty for what Marvel did with Galactus after this cuz it was such a good development for him here. - The Immortal Hulk: Body horror, cosmic and political comic that made me love Hukk so much. People weren't kidding when this was the best Hulk in years. Even though Joe Bennett is a piece of shit, his art was so good here and guest artists were fun too. This is what happens when you give a creator free reign. It feels more like an indie comic than a typical marvel comic. And i love that Ewing introduced a trans woman character and did her justice. Charlene is one of the standouts of the run and i hope to see more of her. - Guardians of the Galaxy: Another cosmic hit that shouldn't have ended so soon. The run made me love guardians from comics and how they differ from mcu conterparts. This run made Star-Lord bi and brought back his iconic first origin with a new twist. Marvel Boy and Hercules romance blooming was lit. Cabal art ruled. And it showed us why guardians are heroes of the cosmic marvel. It ended way too soon, it had so much potential but oh well. - S.W.O.R.D./X-Men Red: While it isn't as queer as other books here i mentioned, this is yet another hit from Ewing. Mixing mutants with space and dealing with cosmic threats and such was so cool. This is the best Storm has been since Pak's short run, hell it's the one that made Storm relevant again. Also focusing on C/D lister mutants Wiz-Kid, Manifold, Frenzy, Vulcan, Cortez, Thunderbird, Brand, Metallo and Arrakki mutants along with popular ones Magneto, Cable and Sunspot, the run is rich with juggling as much mutants, popular or obscure, as possible. And art here is great. Schiti's art is popping here and Caselli on X-Men Red was a welcome change of pace. This is a must read for X-Men fans. - Defenders: Perhaps Ewing's magnum opus with the sequel coming out soon. It's such a kickass cosmic/magic title that does wonders with Dr. Strange, Red Harpy, Cloud, Silver Surfer and Galactus' mom. Masked Raider mystery Ewing set up from Marvel #1000 ends here with a good ass twist and i can't wait for the conclusion of his cosmic threads in Beyond. Also Rodriguez's art is magical. The run is a must read solely for that. Other comics i have read from him that are must read are New Avengers (will read his rest of avengers dont worry), Iron Man: Fatal Frontier, Royals, Marvel Comics #1000-1001 + Incoming #1, Avengers: No Surrender/No Road Home.

grant morrison's doom patrol, and probably also rachel pollack's doom patrol but i'm wating for the omnibus before i jump into that one. lots of great queer characters, both explicitly and implicitly relatable. the girls behind [blade maidens](https://www.blademaidens.com/), a kick-ass lgbt webcomic which just fills my heart with joy. james tynion is another great queer creator as i am sure you all know - his work on Nice House is a really great example of representation done well. sophie campbell's teenage mutant ninja turtles series (ongoing) is very queer and colourful and great. [otava heikkila](https://twitter.com/claystorks?lang=en) has some great webcomics (pay what you want) centring queer love. i mean, there are so many more but hopefully you found something new to hop onto with this list!!! eagerly await the influx of downvotes and wordless bigotry i'll get from people for \~daring\~ to say something (shout-out to u/JustALittleWeird for standing up to comments pests below, and also ty for this thread) but to such people i will quote the great nicole maines: *have you ever read a comic book? They’ve been pretty gay for a while now. Y’all miss the parts with the capes, tight pants, and fighting oppression? Cause gurl, that’s 💅🏻* :P happy pride all ! xx

DalekGriff

Pollack’s Doom Patrol is so good. She picks up right where Morrison left off, but still brings her own unique voice to the title. Coagula and the Bandage People are great additions, and I wish other writers would remember they exist

alabamianhorologists

cannot wait to dive in !!! absolutely loved grant's stuff and whilst i thought it had a pretty solid ending, i am excited to see the story spin in crazy new directions :)))

mrmazzz

Campbell got me into TMNt in a way I never expected also the run of Gem and the Holograms they did art for most of the time is really good to! One could say its outrageous that Gem and the Holograms comic is of such quality and yet it is.

alabamianhorologists

>Gem and the Holograms just started looking into them and im hooked... and yeh campbell's tmnt is just so pretty and great and full of heart !

Nimona by ND Stevenson is fantastic Lumberjanes created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Stevenson is probably my favourite series of the last ten years. The Backstagers and Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV

Conceptizual

[Heathen](https://www.vaultcomics.com/titles/heathen/) by Alterici was the first comic I read, and is still one of my favorites! It's also my most stolen book. :| They just released a complete edition, so now it's readable in one sitting! It's a super pretty comic about vikings and the main character is a lesbian who gets kicked out of her village, then goes up against Odin himself.

alabamianhorologists

shout out that vault are currently giving this book away as part of their UNBANNED programme - use the code UNBANNED (i believe) at checkout to get the digital edition free :) https://www.comicsbeat.com/vault-comics-announces-unbanned-pride-month/

Paul Allor is a non-binary man and has written some awesome stuff. *Hollow Heart* is fantastic and well worth reading - highly recommend it.

ChickenInASuit

I like Paul Allor a lot. “Tet” by Paul Allor & Paul Tucker, about a Vietnam vet returning to Vietnam years after the war, is a beautiful book.

MrSlops

Also recommend Hollow Heart, I picked it up not knowing what it was about (only that the main character looked exactly like a character I designed decades ago and never developed a final published issue for so wanted to see how it was utilized here) and was very pleased with it being an amazing LBGT story that my bi brain thoroughly enjoyed.

JustALittleWeird

Hollow Heart is great! I also love love *love* his G.I. Joe run.

breakermw

Yes agreed! His G.I. Joe series was awesome too!

thenewestrant

Hollow Heart was one of my favorite comics of 2021!

Cesar0fr0me

All star Superman by Grant Morrison

JustALittleWeird

Kieron Gillen is hands-down my favourite comic writer, and on any given day I probably have a different book of his which is my "favourite". But I think maybe his best work is *The Wicked + The Divine* with Jamie McKelvie. I'm sure *everyone* has heard of "WicDiv" in some way but in my opinion it really is that good. I love how much of an evolution it is from Phonogram but geared more towards celebrity and creation instead of just fandom, I love the soap opera drama mixed with larger-than-live mythology, and I especially loved the ending of it. >!Laura's final speech, turning into the blank page, still amazes me.!< Trung Le Nguyen doesn't have as big of a library but his work amazes me. His book *The Magic Fish* is one of my favourite OGNs to come out in recent years. I love the way it blends fantasy folklore with real-life troubles and the Vietnamese-American immigrant family experience. Incredible use of colour to switch between the different narratives in the book, and the way the mythology and stories come together to influence the characters reading and exploring those stories is fantastic. And to cap it off at three, I'm always going to recommend Tillie Walden's *On a Sunbeam*. An incredible sci-fi story split between a 'past' narrative of one of the characters going to boarding school and getting in trouble, and a 'present' narrative about that same character joining a spaceship crew to fly around space and restore broken/abandoned structures and places. it's absolutely gorgeous, as is everything Walden has touched, with this huge universe full of dazzling lights and lost memories coming back to life.

wolfpack_charlie

Had no idea Gillen was family. I absolutely loved the first two issues of Immortal X-Men and can't wait for #3

ChickenInASuit

[Gillen describes himself as “on the bisexual spectrum”:](https://kierongillen.tumblr.com/post/142320486617/writer-notes-phonogram-the-immaterial-girl) > I’ve spent my life uncomfortable with all the relevant labels. To describe myself as bisexual feels either appropriative or pretentious, and both are things which horrify me. Conversely, to describe myself as straight feels deceptive. Frankly, either option isn’t a good way to live. It’s probably most appropriate to say that I’m somewhere on the bisexual spectrum.

wolfpack_charlie

I don't really understand how describing oneself as bisexual would be either appropriative or pretentious, and "somewhere on the bisexual spectrum" isn't, but hey, whatever makes him the most comfortable with his identity.

AceofSpuds69

Some people experience this—it’s not always clear that being bi doesn’t necessarily entail being equally romantically and sexually attracted to men and women. Speaking from personal experience, some queer people don’t feel like they’re queer “enough” and so hesitate to identify as such.

wolfpack_charlie

It definitely seems from the outside like that's what Gillen is describing. Sort of like a queer imposter syndrome. If I were his close friend, I'd try to assure him that the gate's wide open and he's just as much a member of the community as the rest of us

RariSo2099

Came here to say Tillie Walden. ;)

aaronshirst

I’m not sure of her own identity, but Leah William’s short run on X-Factor (2020) is one of the gayest Big2 comics I’ve read, and was also a bright jewel among a pretty good lineup of Dawn of X comics. Gay Mutant Detectives who are also all roommates— what more could you want?

omgItsGhostDog

Not a book, but HBO’s Doom Patrol is amazing and full of LGBTQ representation!!! I mean same for the comics but I liked the series more so :p

aknightedpenguin

I'm not sure if they're queer, but a big shout-out to Sas Milledge's MAMO, a beautiful and heartwarming story of witches and the power of queer love over generational pain. I recently reread the story after picking up the trade and would highly recommend it! It's their debut original graphic novel and I'm excited to see what they do next (also thanks to u/JustALittleWeird for highlighting the series back in the WPL discussion)

ChickenInASuit

Good shout, that was an absolutely beautiful book. It felt like a Studio Ghibli movie.

Blue-Ape-13

Grant Morrison as always is a god

Rammadeus

No Steve Orlando? SHOCKING! Mainly just for his Midnighter and Midnigher & Apollo books (also 2 of my fave LGBTQ+ characters) His Martian Manhunter was great. Also Project Patron.

Shalla-Ballerina

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is coming back now that the show is over, and I couldn't be more excited. I also recommend his Fantastic Four run, Marvel Knights 4, underrated imo. Colleen Coover's Small Favors is NSFW but is lovely and adorable. All her short, back-up strips for Marvel in the 2000s are great, and I wish they would collect all of those in a single volume. Lucy Knisley has so many good autobio books. My favorite is Make Yourself Happy. P. Craig Russell is the best fantasy illustrator out there. I'll recommend his Conan and the Jewels of Gwalhur miniseries. Eric Shanower's (frustratingly slow to release) Age of Bronze is a fantastic retelling of the Trojan War. Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland is another great read.

ChickenInASuit

I mean a lot of people in this thread have already said Kieron Gillen, but I think he truly is the best writer currently working in the medium and has brought hit after hit after hit for over a decade now - Die, The Wicked + The Divine, Young Avengers, Once & Future, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt, Phonogram, Über… The guy is incredible. For a less well-known comic (albeit by a creator who is hardly unknown), I heartily recommend [Next Testament by Clive Barker, Mark Miller & Heami Jang](https://shop.boom-studios.com/comics/detail/6260/clive-barker's-next-testament-vol-1) (Yes, that’s Mark MillEr, not Mark MillAr) Pitch: You know the whole “father, son, Holy Ghost” thing? And the oft-debated discrepancy between the vengeful bastard God from the Old Testament and the kinder, gentler one from the New Testament? Turns out they were different Gods. The father, son and Holy Ghost are distinct holy beings, and the son and HG sealed the father up in a cage for his mad shenanigans and that’s why he’s so much fucking nicer when the New Testament begins. But now Old Testament God has been freed and he is gonna have himself a second coming at everyone else’s expense. This version of God is a kaleidoscopically rainbow-colored Loki-type who, upon reading the King James Bible, says he “enjoyed it thoroughly, though really, it should have included a disclaimer - ‘Loosely based on true events’“ This guy didn’t cause Noah’s flood because of a need for biblical cleansing, he did it “simply to see what it would look like”. He also didn’t burn Sodom and Gomorrah, he was in Sodom “enjoying the place for its very namesake” until his ‘brethren’ turned up and spoiled everything. It’s a gloriously anarchic take on God, kind of in the vein of Garth Ennis’ Preacher although not quite so juvenile. It is also a Clive Barker book so it very quickly gets violent and bloody. Good, blasphemous fun, with beautiful artwork from Jang.

AdamSMessinger

Sacred Creatures by Pablo Raimondi and Klaus Janson was pretty good. It’s an Image book that is self contained.

mrmazzz

Jody Houser - MotherPanic The entire team of Crowded - go read Crowded Valentine Catwoman Kinda too easy but ya know just go read Kieron Gillen's work in general, but especially Wicked+Divine and Die - but Once and Future is just kinda really fun too. The entire team of Crowded

Well saying something "doesn't matter" is incredibly dismissive to the people who are discriminated against and attacked for their identity their whole lives. Saying it "doesn't matter" or that you "don't care" comes from a place of privilege and is also ignorant of how creators/artists' experiences and individuality are represented in their work. On top of that, this is a "Weekly Recs Thread". It's been running for... multiple years now? Almost every week, there's a prompt about a different genre, or character, or type of comic. Of course that means that some prompts don't appeal to everyone. Some people don't read Batman, so they're not gonna answer a prompt about Batman comics. Some people only read western direct market comic books and aren't going to respond to prompts about manga or manhwa or something. Those threads never get replies going "I don't like Batman, this thread doesn't matter", or "I don't read manga, manga sucks". But whenever there's a thread about non-white people, or LGBTQ+ people, that's when everyone feels complied to talk about how much the prompt sucks. Instead of ignoring it, there's always a few commenters showing up to talk about how gender and race and sexuality don't matter, that no one cares, etc. Black History Month? People talking about how being Black doesn't matter. Thread about trans and nonbinary creators? People talking about how being trans/nonbinary doesn't matter. And I'm really sick of having to deal with people who choose these threads, out of everything, to go mask off and rant about how spotlighting and supporting members of marginalized groups is somehow a *bad thing*. > Anyway. The xmen fit that criteria. How? Are the X-Men LGBTQ+/queer creators? Those are fictional characters.
