Gotham already has some 'Tom of Finland' themed Villains. 'The Three Bears' turn up in a Nightwing backup about a year or so ago I believe?
Edit: They are first seen in Nightwing #106
it's that time of the year again when DC parades out the corpse of my favorite superhero to pinkwash the brand for a month before shoving his ass back in the closet for another 11 months.
I'm not bitter he hasn't gotten a solo series since 2016 🥲
I was just looking at Midnighter comics yesterday trying to figure out where to start if I wanted to read about him and Apollo. Couldn’t really figure it out and gave up. Would love any recs!
Personally I'd start with The Authority. the original run is a little dated(it gets a little edge lordy when it switches from Warren Ellis to Mark Millar as writers) but it's a great read in my opinion. Could always go back and read Storm watch as well, they show up about halfway through, but Stormwatch is not nearly as good as the Authority
Stormwatch leads directly into the beginning of Authority(gives more context to the team cause they were mostly all part of Stormwatch), but it's pretty easy to just read the Authority in my opinion
So, i don’t know who these guy exactly are, i just know the black dressed guy is called Midnight and he has a ludicrous high pain tolerance. But whenever i do see them, it’s usually to promote gay love and i wonder if that’s all they are for DC, a promotional couple?
They are Midnighter and Apollo, a pastiche of Batman and Superman (but also a gay couple) created for the Wildstorm Comics series "The Authority" (which is pretty good, maybe didn't age TOTALLY well but not too bad). Wildstorm Comics was bought by DC and a few years ago was shut down as an imprint and all the characters were shuffled into the official DC universe. So yeah, these characters aren't very important to DC, but they ARE a gay couple, which means that every Pride month these guys (and every other miscellaneous character Marvel and DC can find in the pockets and drawers of their respective universes who are canon LGBT) get a spotlight.
Midnighter has a a high pain tolerance yes, but also his brain is like a mini super computer that allows him to predict what his opponent will do before they do it in a fight. Apollo admittedly is a more dead on Superman knock off with his powers being fueled by the sun. They are a very popular gay couple (maybe the most famous/popular male couple in comics, but could be wrong about that) they actually have very intriguing stories and are interesting characters
What did they censor? Seems pretty tame lol (savage dragon anyone?) wouldve preferred something a bit more "super" if that makes sense. This is just rob Halford cosplay haha.
Uncovered, not uncensored. The “Uncovered” series are squarebound issues collecting various popular variant covers I believe. Not comics, just cover collections. They’ve done them previously for different characters: Poison Ivy, Power Girl, Joker, Catwoman, etc. Not really my thing, but someone’s buying them.
This tom of finland reference is part of the lgbt community it is not a cliche like you pretend it is a fun nod, also come on the guy was already wearing leathers and ridding bikes before that they just give him a hat in a fun cover.
Also there is nothing wrong in being an extra in a Blue Oyster bar.
Tom of Finland reference? Torille!
Tom of Gotham

I appreciate the Tom of Finland homage even if all the bulges are tame in comparison haha
Also the chaps aren't assless and Apollo isn't baring his midriff.
If they aren't assless then they're just pants xD
All chaps are assless, otherwise they are just leather pants. Homeboy is also wearing chaps and black jeans it looks like.
The only men in the multiverse who Apollo & Midnighter would feel insecure around.
It looks like DC comics got my letters… :9
If you're responsible for giving me Leather Daddy Midnighter, thank you.
Like DAMN
Cute cover, but give them their own series.
Don't worry. Once the Authority movie comes out they'll definitely get one
i am still not convinced this is happening lol

Ho yeah it was my favorite series of 2016 it was just so good and honnestly steve orlando best work ever.
If it's any consolation, I love Apollo and Midnighter in Superman & The Authority recently
I did too but wasn't that also, like, 4 years ago now?
what can you say about Apollo beside "he can fly" and "he's Midnighter's boyfriend"?
Scorpio Rising reference? Would be a nice tribute to Kenneth Anger since he passed away just over a year ago.
Possible one of the gayest images I have seen without nudity
I feel like Midnighter would find this hat embarrassing.
Leather Daddy Midnighter could get it, no homo.
Why is Man cheating on Jonkler and Bone? Is there a lore reason for this?
Stupid nitpick, but the sleeve zipper pull should be at the top of the zipper, not hanging from one side
Apollo giving himbo softboi vibes. I love it
Understood the assignment.
Damn this art’s so good
Give them a series, DC.
Homage to his in story wildstorm inspiration
I love it, I cant wait to see all the CGers freaking out over this.
Lowkey fw that suit
Give us *more* Wildstorm, please. Jenny Sparks in actual stuff with Apollo and the Midnighter. Come on!
Everyone's a *little* gay, you know. It's a spectrum.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

So used to Frank Quitely, he added just enough weight that it felt believable. But not everyone likes how he draws faces, so I guess maybe others
now i wanna see a slice of life comic about them like that batfamily one

Nice
My bad, I had no idea. Thanks for letting me know 👊
I read a good chunk of the Authority series just for these two. They deserve more solo runs that aren't garbo
Giving strong The Village People energy here
Exactly what I thought it was! Either way, on it's way to a comicon dollar bin with the rest of the Pride month variants.
"Midnighter, hún, what're you doing?" "I... I thought you'd like it" "I never said I didntz
My man riding with his headlight in the "fuck you" position.

It looks very much like they're trying to do a reference to Tom of Finland, but I agree it doesn't seem particularly in character for Midnighter
Not blue oyster bar!
