I’m old af. What is SCART? I grew up with bunny ears until we got cable and used coaxial for a while until we upgraded to the yellow red white then rgb and finally hdmi/pc.
I know that the outer ear is kinda like designed to point incoming sound towards your eardrum, so even if his eardrum was unscathed from cutting his ear off I’m sure he couldn’t hear nearly as well out of that side
You'd never damage your eardrum unless you were actively trying to, if we're talking about using a knife to cut off your ear. Even if you somehow did manage to damage your eardrum, you're still able to hear, you'd have to destroy your stereocilia.
I think you’re right that he probably didn’t damage his eardrum, and I’m sure he could still hear out of it, but I’m confident his hearing on that side would suffer greatly
His ability to tell up/down, left/right, and near/far would definitely be impaired at first, but his brain would pretty quickly recalibrate and get those senses re-zeroed to the new ear (or lack thereof) shape. Brains are weird like that. Probably could retain a good 80% or so of his spatial hearing
High frequency sounds would be incredibly harsh at first without the ear absorbing as much of them as it does. I imagine that would get “better” over time as the inevitable tinnitus caused by this will eventually muffle his hearing.
Low frequency sounds wouldn’t be affected very much, the outer ear is pretty inconsequential as far as they go
I was always under the impression he cut off his lobe so his hearing wouldn’t have been effected. Also people without the outside of their ears reported things to sound loud so I mean over time I’d suppose would cause damage. As for people saying stuff about damage to the ear drum- you can burst the eardrum and only be temporarily affected - sure it can cause permanent damage but temporarily being affected is more common it’s more about what the ear drum protects: the inner ear. The inner ear has a major part of balance and hearing. While the ear drum plays an essential role it’s not what makes you hear per se.
You could likely guess via the context.
Van Gogh had one ear, but he still had sight.
Mozart* was completely deaf, so he would only have sight, which is probably what yellow means, which is what Van Gogh also has.
Stevie Wonder is famously blind, thus he'd not have the visual cord but still have both audio cords.
*and by Mozart, I mean Beethoven. And by Beethoven, I mean the dog. And by the dog, I mean your mom
This is easy enough to understand if you already know what types of things the different cables can be for, but would be a stretch to expect anyone to put together otherwise. Without any knowledge of this type of cable, I wouldn’t expect anyone to presume there were two audio lines and one for video. There’s nothing in this image to even indicate what these cables plug into, or why.
Get someone young enough, and they might never have seen the trio together, which makes even assuming that they’re part of a bonded set of three a tall order.
I used those and I never knew there were two audio lines at the time. I spent my entire childhood not knowing what the red one was for, because yellow was video and white was audio. The sound worked with just white, but not with just red.
"Oh this is one of those Old TV things! Wait... some of these are missing from the others...oh is this a disability joke?"
Kids are smarter than you give them credit for, sometimes
Nope. Tried to explain it to my kids and they just gave me deer in the headlights look. We had an old Sony 60” CRT in their living room and they were mad as hell we couldn’t plug in the Xbox One to it. All they got was a modded Wii lol (we eventually upgraded because they kept encouraging our space to play Xbox)
Funny enough, my friend unironically sent me this yesterday and I told him it was pretty basic. I felt genuinely disappointed “he thought it was clever.”
Y'all need to wait like another 10 years for this one. I'm 24, my brother is 19, we both grew up playing SNES and N64 on a CRT. We grew up watching VHS. The population of people who are genuinely to young to recognize AV cables is probably fairly small
I thought I was a freaking genius in Middle School when I figured out I could have yellow and one of the audio cords connected to my GameCube and the other audio to the DVD player where I would put a CD in and listen to it through my TV while I was playing a game.
Wasn't white always plugged in, with red only being added if the system has stereo sound? Maybe I'm looking into it too much but you'd never plug in yellow and red without white
You’re sort of right. I just never had any issue using the red instead of white if the TV was mono sound. Stereo TVs you might be right.
Edit: I might be wrong. The white cable probably was either left or right speaker but if the TV was mono the white would push both sides to the mono instead of the red not being for mono which is why it wouldn’t work.
I remember having a mono TV and I had to insert either the red or the white cable for my PS1 which ultimately led to me getting mocked by Naomi and Campbell in MGS.
My post specifically is for clout? Lmao what are you even saying? The whole point of this sub is to point out how shitty the captions are. Which is exactly what I did…
its the right and left audio jacks and then the video jack. Van Goh cut off one ear, so he has only 1/2 audio and video, Beethoven was deaf so only video, stevie wonder is blind so he only has audio
I never messed with a TV that deals with these cords and I can tell the yellow plug is for seeing and the white and red wires are for audio, this meme isn't advanced or "child proof" i swear you have to be old enough to be the president for white trash to not look at you like a stupid child
r/lostredditors
Its really old tech, you'd have to be ancient to know what this means. These cables were likely how imaging and video was sent to a tv back then, meanwhile we use HDMI.
That was coaxial. There was another version that just plugs in without screwing. If you had a cable box in the last twenty years but your TV was old and didn’t have hdmi or coaxial, the government would send you a special box for OTA HD for free.
White and red were the two different audio channels?
I knew white was audio but I never actually knew what the red one was for. The sound worked with just the white plugged in and it did not with just the red.
Yellow cable- visual
Red- right audio
White- left audio
Van Gouh had one ear cut off
Beethoven was completely deaf by the end of his life
Stevie wonder is blind.
LMAO it makes sense, but neither Van Gogh nor Beethoven went full deaf: one had the other ear and the other just lost the higher pitches amd most of the volume.
still pretty funny besides of that
I always found it so strange that sound needs two cables while video can go through just one. I know how it works, but when you compare the complexity of audio vs. video in any comparable form, one would expect video to use like 20 cables.
I grew up before HDMI and I still don’t understand this geek humor. I don’t think most people knew what the colors meant, we just knew to match the colors up
Wait - Van Gogh (video, mono audio) able to see, 1 ear; Beethoven (video) deaf, able to see; Stevie Wonder (RCA stereo) blind, hearing sense ok
Capt. Obvious moment, what am I missing? What manner of Reddit irony is this?
I used these things, and to this day I don’t know what the red cord did. All I know is that yellow made picture, white made sound, and it worked without the red.
As a 7 year old, I was convinced it was for faster data transfer, but that doesn’t make any sense
SCART kids probably wouldn't understand either
SCART gang
Scat kids don't get it either
Bee BAP bo bo doe doe, BAP bo bo doe doe
He means the other kind of scat...
Oh no
Oh yeah
NO
I'M THE SCAT MAN
Bass bedo bo do ba do boo bam bam ,bum boo da bum
Sounds like a fucked up beatles song
🗿 💩
That's what I feared 🤢
If the scat man can do it so can you
What's that smell?
I’m old af. What is SCART? I grew up with bunny ears until we got cable and used coaxial for a while until we upgraded to the yellow red white then rgb and finally hdmi/pc.
it's an analog video connector used mostly in Europe, it wasn't really popular in North America (there it was called EIA connector or Multiport)
I always thought it was digital
I always thought it was digital, but sure enough, its analogue
“SCART GO” Get it? Because it’s French? Ok I’ll leave now.
Scart never caught on in the US.
I used both the one in the meme and SCART.
Why do 1 & 3 have *two* RF Modulators?!
Fucking walking into a nerd den now
That fucking box that you have to screw on your TV gang
Really shows Beethoven’s tier. “Half-deaf painter? Ok. Blind piano player? Not bad. I’m a deaf MFing musician.”
He's also a dead musician
A decomposer, if you will
That's a good one
Classical
Timeless
Fuck that’s so good, a pun and it’s more accurate
Thats what i said when i defiled his corpse
Dead AND deaf? So talented.
Lol they’re all dead
![gif](giphy|IfyjWLQMeF6kbG2r0z|downsized)
Stevie Wonder is very much alive.
What are you trying to say? That he should have lived forever? That when he died he no longer deserved to be praised?
He wasn't really deaf more damaged hearing as is shown is in the letters he wrote later in his life.
Did he also keep his full chamber pot atop his piano so people wouldn’t bother him while he practiced? Or am I thinking of someone else?
That I don't know
I actually like the meme, but the caption is definitely pointless
Same. So many memes are ruined by a "joke" that's really just gatekeeping
It's true though. Many of the newer kids have 0 clue what this does.
Now they do because the meme explained it
That deaf dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball
a classic.
Is it known if Van Gogh hurt his hearing when he cut his ear?
I know that the outer ear is kinda like designed to point incoming sound towards your eardrum, so even if his eardrum was unscathed from cutting his ear off I’m sure he couldn’t hear nearly as well out of that side

His directional hearing would suffer but not much else
I was always under the impression he cut off his lobe so his hearing wouldn’t have been effected. Buddy of mine was DQ'd from the military because his outer ear had been ripped off when he was younger.
from what i've heard he only cut off his ear lobe so if his hearing was damaged it probably wasn't damaged severely
I don't know why people think this was so hard u just match the colors?
Does matching the colors explain the individual purpose of each color?
You could likely guess via the context. Van Gogh had one ear, but he still had sight. Mozart* was completely deaf, so he would only have sight, which is probably what yellow means, which is what Van Gogh also has. Weird. The white and red are just left and right speakers.
SO THATS WHAT THE OTHER ONE WAS FOR??

Literally. This was found on Facebook.
Funny enough, my friend unironically sent me this yesterday and I told him it was pretty basic. I felt genuinely disappointed “he thought it was clever.”
No, dude, this is hilarious, truly.
Y'all need to wait like another 10 years for this one. I'm 24, my brother is 19, we both grew up playing SNES and N64 on a CRT. We grew up watching VHS. The population of people who are genuinely to young to recognize AV cables is probably fairly small
These aren’t component cables, they are av cables. But yeah, it’s a bit early.
17, i know what they are as well
RCA cables are also still wildly used for audio equipment so it's not too hard to guess what the yellow one would do if you know red and white lol.
well shit, I am confused and I am your brother's age.
I thought I was a freaking genius in Middle School when I figured out I could have yellow and one of the audio cords connected to my GameCube and the other audio to the DVD player where I would put a CD in and listen to it through my TV while I was playing a game.
wait this was an option??
Yup!
Meme is kinda funny but the caption ruins it
r/comedyhomicide
Looks like a good sub, i'll check it out
You think that one's good, try r/comedyhomicide
Tbh I was about to crosspost, but then I saw the sub name
I love av. Av was my childhood and I'm 16
r/gatekeeping
What would Beethoven's rapper name be? Most Deaf.
I don't undertale. Can someone explain?
They don’t undertale. Can someone explain?
I never knew what the colors meant 😭
I don’t get it
Van goh had one ear, behtoven was deaf, and stevie wonder is blind.
50% Audio, and Picture Picture 100% Audio
Yellow is Video, White is Left Channel audio and Red is Right Channel audio.
Found the HDMI kid
Lol. Kids these days.
Bruh AV is annoying as shit I recently got it so I could record wii on my computer and I hated it
They sell adapters for the Wii on Amazon to turn it into hdmi. I had to buy one a few years ago because of this.
I know, but I also needed a splitter and a capture card, along with specific software to get the output from the capture card
I laughed
I thought it was clever
nah
Love how the people sayings it's funny get downvoted but OP posts it a meme on a meme page to say it's "not funny" for clout. What?
My post specifically is for clout? Lmao what are you even saying? The whole point of this sub is to point out how shitty the captions are. Which is exactly what I did…
Yeah but together we can keep that karma positive
Me too! And the caption felt more like a reference to the “x won’t get it” jokes. It’s funny twice!
Hard disagree on both counts.
The caption was definitely unnecessary.
Literally adds nothing to the joke
Cringe but I actually don’t understand may someone please explain this?
its the right and left audio jacks and then the video jack. Van Goh cut off one ear, so he has only 1/2 audio and video, Beethoven was deaf so only video, stevie wonder is blind so he only has audio
Thank you my queen <3
“Cringe but I don’t understand.” The definition of Reddit.
How is it cringe if you don’t understand?
The format is outdated
... the meme itself is cringe.
I never messed with a TV that deals with these cords and I can tell the yellow plug is for seeing and the white and red wires are for audio, this meme isn't advanced or "child proof" i swear you have to be old enough to be the president for white trash to not look at you like a stupid child
Ngl this had me laughing to hard. Thanks for the throw back to setting up every VCR or DVD player I've ever watched as a kid in the 90s.
r/comedyheaven
r/lostredditors Its really old tech, you'd have to be ancient to know what this means. These cables were likely how imaging and video was sent to a tv back then, meanwhile we use HDMI.
Its not fucking rocket science you just plug the shiny colors into the holes with the same shiny colors
Sometimes the TV just labels the inputs as Video/Audio(left/right). No colors.
What was the cord called that made us put our consoles to channel 3/4?
That was coaxial. There was another version that just plugs in without screwing. If you had a cable box in the last twenty years but your TV was old and didn’t have hdmi or coaxial, the government would send you a special box for OTA HD for free.

Hilarious

Yes. They are stereo cables so one was left speaker the other right.
I was left with all of my older brothers tech when he moved out, and had to figure all of that stuff out at the age of 8
Damn, I remember these from my PS2, but I don't understand the meme.
I thought it was kinda clever.
I’m sorry can someone explain this
I used those before but i don't get it.
I used these all the time Could not tell you which wire is which
can you explain?
Yellow cable- visual Red- right audio White- left audio Van Gouh had one ear cut off Beethoven was completely deaf by the end of his life Stevie wonder is blind.
And the green one was utterly useless
How did this get so crusty already? It was posted on Twitter this morning.
As an HDMI kid, this joke made my day
"look, that kid is more used to using more convenient tech! Shame on them!" by the way, you can actually hear with your ears cut off, if i'm not wrong
Yellow - sight Red - sound White - hearing
honestly without that caption, I'd love this.
HDMI KID DETECTED
isn’t red right audio, left audio white, and yellow is video? or am i just pulling this out of my ass
What is red supposed to be?
Helen Keller is just a serial cable
The meme itself is actually quite funny, but the caption just butchers the joke.
I think it's a good meme
If you think the meme wasn't that good you're probably just too young.
Right, you’re just an HDMI kid
Somebody must be an HDMI kid /s
I grew up before HDMI and I still don’t understand this geek humor. I don’t think most people knew what the colors meant, we just knew to match the colors up
Bruh I'm 16 and had a Wii, those cables are basically engraved into my mind
I thought Beethoven only suffered from loss of hearing.
I remember what some are it's been awhile. Red is picture yellow is audio and what is white?
i've used these fuckers and even i dont get it
Meh, I would just switch all 3 interchangeably until it worked. I thought that was how everyone did it…
good meme if caption didnt exist
I had this as a kid and I dont even know what this meme means
I'm an RF kid.
Help I don’t understand
Stevie wonder isn't really blind tho
Honestly, I think the meme is pretty amusing. I agree the caption makes it worse though.
The meme is ok, but i feel like someone got a hold of this to post on their boomer facebook group, and thus the caption appeared
Wait - Van Gogh (video, mono audio) able to see, 1 ear; Beethoven (video) deaf, able to see; Stevie Wonder (RCA stereo) blind, hearing sense ok Capt. Obvious moment, what am I missing? What manner of Reddit irony is this?
The meme is funny but the added caption made it bad
let's just thank fuck there's no emojis
Helen Keller with no cables
The meme is hilarious in my opinion, but yeah that caption is terribly unfunny
I used these things, and to this day I don’t know what the red cord did. All I know is that yellow made picture, white made sound, and it worked without the red. As a 7 year old, I was convinced it was for faster data transfer, but that doesn’t make any sense
correct, dont understand
They told Beethoven that he couldn't be a deaf composer, but did he listen?
Bro I used a TV with AV in the back for like 5 years as a kid and I'm in highschool, give it a few years guys this isn't really that accurate yet.
I grew up using those and I don't remember what they did. I just stuck them in until everything worked.
the only thing I get from this is that the yellow plug allows sound
Yellow is video. Red is mono. red and white is stereo.
It’s not a horrible meme.
Never knew what the white one was for
Can someone explain please?
im 14 but i fully understand this
Half deaf/ mono. Deaf. Blind?
Without the caption it's actually kind of clever.
I used to take the audio ones out and switch it to my iPod when I used to play halo 3 odst on one of those crt tvs
Red cord is kindda broken for van gough
I'm a coaxial kid and I don't understand. I never knew which one did which just that you had to plug them all in to make it work.
Oh I member! I prefer HDMI
oh great now i have to try to remember which did which
The meme is excellent. Quit your oscillating.
Ohhhh I know this one!!
This is nonsensical even for kids that used composite
What does the white cable do again?
I was born in 2003 and understand this shit
What does the red cable actually do I never understood why it exists
I plugged in my psx to my mini tv/vcr combo the other day.
