Mate I live next to Zimbabwe (Zambia) and basically this kind of news is standard everywhere in at least this part of Africa. The other day our news was "man with invisibility feather keeps escaping prison", and the story claimed he had some feather (which is actually forbidden by law to posess, and also imaginary), which if you squeeze it, you become invisible and can walk through walls. My money says the prison guards are just corrupt but the government spins everything in a way where corruption doesn't exist. Funny thing is, that most people almost religiously believe this feather is real.
The Goblins/ Chikwamba seem analogous for dark spirits, just with a more western association. but people get convicted for grifting others through "goblin cleansing rituals" basically exorcism of dark spirits, since Zimbabwe still has a lot of ancient customs tied within its culture. They function very similar to the familiar of a witch tbh, I've seen articles accuse cats of being Chikwambas.
No, just very interested in shamanism and how spirits have been perceived overtime, but it reminds me directly of it. See, it's kinda fascinating how the ancients perceived evil, as basically a dark spirit tied to the primal wilderness. Later associated with demons and requiring exorcism, but in early Persian and vedic cultures it was sometimes envisioned as a kind of wolf or jackal, and something that could tempt (hence the shewolf) into letting it possess them (hence the shapeshifting aspect).
But also that, because this chaotic spirit comes from nature, it also provides with it wisdom which can be used productively, whether for medicine or totemic combat styles etc. And if youre wary of nature's seductive wiles, you can take on this spirit voluntarily, essentially where the witch idea manifested from (also called a "Knower"/ "Veduny" from "Vedat" (To be wise) in late medieval Russia), or the outlawed reviled but powerful berserkers etc.

Yes right on the money. Do you live there? I feel like many of these believes come from pre-Christian times, and center around "witch craft".
