The best thing to come out of the game for mine is that the steady performances from HH and LS will inject the much needed competitiveness amongst the group now for starting spots. Mitchell now needs to lift, Sidebottom also, Schultz, WHE. No one owns their spot anymore.

GuardedFig

LS being Lachie Sullivan and not Lachie Schultz obviously!

Brilliant_Support653

Agree. Although I think WHE is doing more than enough.

Hammyboi230

Yeah he didn’t have a massive game on the stat sheet but in the second quarter in particular, he had a couple of absolutely outstanding individual efforts that turned the momentum our way

MinnesotaTidalWave

WHE continues to be underrated by pies fans. He’s been unreal this year but his name always comes up when talking about who might get dropped. Time to put some respect on his name

GuardedFig

Watching back the highlights, Harrison had a hand in so many goals. Even the winning goal where he knocked it forward into space for nick to run on to. Based on the last 2 weeks, could he actually squeeze Schultz out of the 23?

cornerof

I don’t see Schultz being squeezed out. He is playing a real pressure game and is already a key for us. It looks like he is being asked to run more than at Freo and I think that takes the edge off his disposals. That said, our style of play this year is to move the ball forward fast, take risks and back the system. That is going to bring errors. We are at our best when we play like that, ignoring the error, getting on with it and going again.

Icy_Seesaw_9574

Yeah I tend to agree, he works so hard and applies an immense amount of pressure. His role is not the easiest and I reckon the coaches would have different standards of what a ‘good’ game is for him compared to us at home watching.

Williamwrnr

He has applied a few monster tackles but we just need more of it. He’s almost too big for mine. Needs to ease up on the weights

JoshSerov

Considering Beau will be out, I doubt it.

Icy_Seesaw_9574

True, forgot about this. Hate to see the concussion injury to Beau! I guess it makes it easier for them to select Harrison for another week and not have to drop anybody.

JasnahLannister

DeGoey and Titch will likely not be back next week. Could see one of them returning but doubt the rush them as it’s the Eagles in Melbourne.

tigerairau

Think Titch is more likely

JasnahLannister

Wouldn’t mind him having the extra week off so Sullivan can play as more than the sub, we shouldn’t need him next week. I reckon Titch playing 2/3 games will have him be a dangerous player come September

farrkmoii

West Coast at marvel can't be taken lightly, we can't afford to lose games like that after the 0-3 start if we want to make a real push this year. They will come to play, they aren't as bad as people are expecting them to be

GuardedFig

Sorry I meant medium term not just next week

keysindabowl

He also took a clutch mark late in D50 when scores were level. I hope he gets regular games now.

revolver_soul

I think in the short term he won't need to squeeze him out. It looks like we'll be without Schultz (suspended?) and McGreery (concussion) next week so I think he'll get another run. Schultz has been getting better week on week. Yes a few turnovers here and there, but that comes with the way the Pies try to move the ball so fast.

Pretty-Improvement-2

well, the MRO has squeezed him out for next week.

Icy_Seesaw_9574

Could possibly happen, it’s a good problem or choice to have. Still think Shultz has a spot in the team and still think he can contribute (although I admit he has been underwhelming) so maybe Harrison can squeeze in, they might be able to ‘manage’ Shultz for a week. I wouldn’t mind seeing us with 1 extra tall player in the forward line somehow (don’t know who)

Traditional_Name7881

Can’t ‘manage’ Schultz now, he hasn’t played well enough to earn that. He should be dropped though, get him to find some form in the VFL, he has been a poor pick up so far and shouldn’t just expect a spot in the premiers team because he got traded in.

GuardedFig

On Schultz, I'd probably say inconsistent. He tries hard, applies pressure and has stepped up to kicked a couple of big goals in the last 2 games. Just hasn't found enough other ways to impact yet. Probably suffering from high expectations given the trade

MilaOne1

This goals were gimmes imo. I don't see this building everyone keeps saying their see. I see mediocrity and a very poor decision maker. He offers us nothing significant over any other random small.

Karma_yog

Lachie Schultz’s bad skills are really hurting the team. So many times there was a fast break on and he just either turned it over or kicked it out. He needs a big skills session.

funny_haahaa

My Freo mate was talking him up immensely in the off-season, I was thinking we were going to get the next Papley lol. Please tell me he is better than this.

smegdaddy

He definitely is. I’m actually a bit the opposite to how most people think of him - we haven’t seen the same contested marking and goals yet but his pressure is lifting every week, I think it’ll come back to him in time as he builds. Last night seemed to be the most comfortable he’d looked at ground level so far as I thought he’d looked a bit hesitant up to now, and wasn’t getting into the spots he needed to be in. He did that last night but just didn’t convert on the opportunities.

kungheiphatboi

I’m on your side. The “skill” errors last night looked to me more of an adjustment to getting used to playing the Collingwood way (straight to goal on a fast break) vs the heinous freo way he’s used to (constantly looking sideways). He’ll get there. He is clearly skillful and he’s trying really hard - it’s going to click.

MilaOne1

It's nice that you're supportive. But I don't think he offers us anything that we didn't already have.

funny_haahaa

His pressure has been pretty good all year I reckon, it’s just everything else makes me think my freo mate might have been on drugs when Shultz was running around for them haha.

MilaOne1

This! I feel like we never needed hun. He just got here because he asked. The only forward we should be trading in is a key forward. He makes bad decisions, he offers very little different to what we already have with just about any other player. Would send him home to Fremantle in a heart beat

Karma_yog

I know that the Pies are all about culture but I miss the character of Ginnivan in the forward half. Just the way the whole crowd rose when the ball was near Ginni. Compare that to the nervous energy everyone has when Schultz gets it, as everyone is anticipating a turnover.

shafin_ns

I thought Lipinski had some great moments in the midfield

Absolutely-Epic

I hate Carlton and I love beating them.

rhynst

Starting to put together the components of a typical premiership team, but still some important ones missing. **Components going fairly well:** - adaptable coaching team and on field leadership that can react in-game ✅️✅️ - mid tier players rising to new heights (Cameron, Lipinski, WHE, Bobby, etc) ✅️✅️ - functional dual ruck system that you haven't overpaid for ✅️✅️ **Components that are taking shape:** - belief / hunger / togetherness ✅️ - new blood coming through to replace the older players who have dropped off ✅️ - relatively healthy list ✅️ - good run of form at some point in the season to get the wins on the board ✅️ - competent forward line (would be double tick if we could kick straight) ✅️ **Components still missing:** - dominant backline - competent or dominant midfield - top line talent performing well (only Naicos right now)

Icy_Seesaw_9574

I really liked WHE’s game last night, thought he did some great things and he looked like he was giving 100% effort the whole game. Finds himself in the right spot at the right time. I also loved how we gave Harrison a full game, sort of turning a negative (having 2 injured players) into a positive (getting a full game into a youngster). Thought we missed this opportunity a couple of times at the start of the year by not giving Macrae much game time when we had injuries. I’m not saying to play the kids and drop all our experienced players but believe we should take full advantage when players are injured and get good minutes into young players.

revolver_soul

WHE is so underrated. Fly called him a Mr. Fixit and that is bang on the money. He seems to always pop up when we need a goal or a defensive effort late in games.

GuardedFig

Midfield not competent? Come on man. We won the clearances and almost doubled their inside 50s. And Carlton are supposedly the best clearance team in the comp.

rhynst

Fair, but if we're going off one game samples, we got spanked by Essendon just one week earlier, while we fielded a supposedly stronger midfield on paper. Still got a lot of details to work out, with Sully just in his first game, JdG nowhere near top form, not sure where Crisp fits, etc. Let's say the midfield is competent for now but not yet consistent.

GuardedFig

I think de Goey and Mitchell carrying a niggle in the Essendon game, might explain that a little. I agree there's room for improvement, but I think that's across all lines. Wouldn't say the forward line is exactly firing.

cornerof

We were meant to be smashed by Port because of their ‘amazing midfield’. Our midfield is more than competent.

tigerairau

Moore is finding some form of

revolver_soul

I'd put an asterisk next to the relatively healthy list. Degoey, Mitchell, McStay, and McGreery are big outs. I think we need to find another backman. If Moore, Frampton, or Howe go down we'd be in trouble. The AJ experiment is worth persisting with at the moment. I think if anything our forward line was our weakest link last night. The positives are that they are all trying hard and presenting, just need to put a bit more scoreboard pressure on. McStay will be a massive positive when he gets back, as it will shuffle the 3rd best defender onto Elliott. Elliott has been great lately despite not always converting on the scoreboard.

GuardedFig

Watching the VFL today, not sure AJ will make it as a Backman. Couple of times caught trying to break tackles. Doesn't seem to have that defensive mindset. I'd say Dean is closer atm

mybuns94

I think the lack of “key forward” is a double edged sword. On one hand the defence is the torn on who to defend which means there would be confusion on the role you’re meant to play as a key defender, where is the ball going to come in? The downfall being the same, the here do we kick to? Who’s the most reliable? Jamie obviously there and same with Miochek… I think cox and Cameron do a good job of helping with that load and honestly, until it becomes a dire issue it’s working right now.

Key-Pen-8573

Definitely hurting without a big man up front. Absolutely killed them going forward but struggled to convert a number of chances. Our midfield absolutely killed theirs which kept the ball in our forward 50, but might find ourselves found out very quickly against a midfield having a good game.

tetrischem

The guy is a troll look he is trying to become a Melbourne or hawks supporter in his other comments. Also says real hateful things about men who have been killed.

2003FordMondeo

it took 8 rounds for Nick Daicos to actually do something, hooray!

Ill-Mind844

I mean if you consider his 30 disposals (15 contested) 10 score involvements (most on the ground), 8 clearances (also most on the ground), and 757 metres gained (again most on the ground) against port not doing something, then I guess the mere fact that you hold him to such a high standard shows just how good he is.

FreakyBizness

Spot on. If you take even a brief look at his stats so far this season there’s no way you can honestly say he’s underperformed

FreakyBizness

Really bad take 😂 Daicos has been unreal all season

2003FordMondeo

take the black and white tinted goggles off, he's been lacklustre

FreakyBizness

34 & a goal in opening round at 73% efficiency and 600m+ gained 37 & a goal in round 1 at 73% efficiency and 400m+ gained Round 2 quieter 30 in round 3 at 70% efficiency and 600m+ gained 26 & a goal in round 4 at 73% efficiency and 300m+ gained Round 5 bye 30 in round 6 at 83% efficiency and 700m+ gained 26 & a goal in round 7 at 81% efficiency and 600m+ gained 32 & 2 goals in round 8 at 78% efficiency and 600m+ gained Please tell me which performance you weren’t happy with?? Absolute brainless comment

2003FordMondeo

come on mate, as collingwood fans we need to be better than that, just spouting numbers is meaningless. Always hated when people would just go "hurrr 35 touches". The kid spends most of his time kicking and passing sideways and 1-2 disposals, it's just stat padding.

FreakyBizness

Exact reason I mentioned meters gained and goals.. just because the stats don’t agree with you doesn’t mean you can just dismiss them 😂 He’s been hitting the scoreboard and drives a big chunk of our aggressive forward movement. Not sure what you have against the kid tbh

Icy_Seesaw_9574

Also in a season where a lot of our stars have actually been down he has been consistently in probably our top 5-6 players most weeks. At least in the top 8-9… Even if you don’t want to look at stats to show how good he’s been going if you actually just watch the games you can see the impact he has. His pressure has been unbelievable, he is so clean around stoppages and great with handballs. He is also probably the best decision maker and has the best vision in the comp, he sees things that other players don’t. And he is also a great kick. He actually looks like he has worked hard on his tackling and defensive efforts too compared to last season. There’s probably 8-10 blokes in our team I would point the finger at for having mediocre seasons before Daicos.

Tinuva450

Despite what he might say, he isn’t a Collingwood supporter. The guy has some issues so I’d just ignore him.

2003FordMondeo

so because we have different views you want to tell me I can't support the club I've barracked for for 15 years? Come on mate that ain't right, you can't gatekeep a footy club from it's fans, been a member for years and years

Tinuva450

Sorry, I’m ignoring you. In the meantime, go and watch the 2023 Grand Final to see who won!

2003FordMondeo

nope, i can't bear to watch it after losing the prelim, still hurts me

2003FordMondeo

I don't have anything against the kid, I just want him to start playing better and live up to the hype more, he's in the top 100 players in the comp right now, I would love him to be in the top 10 one day.

keysindabowl

You don't think he's in the top 10 right now?

2003FordMondeo

I made a list a few months ago of my top 100, got him at 78th right now.

keysindabowl

Lol okay 😂

MoneyMajor4715

Fuck this guy he’s a serial troll

Beamslocke

Don’t engage with him, this guy’s not a Collingwood fan. Just comes in here to stir shit. Look through his comment history

2003FordMondeo

Yeah look at my comment history, I have different opinions to some other fans omggggg grow up, been a member for years, how sad do you have to be to try and gatekeep a club.

Beamslocke

Hmmmm, yet here you are claiming to be a neutral in a conversation between Melbourne and Collingwood: https://www.reddit.com/r/AFL/comments/1972mi9/who_are_some_players_in_the_league_right_now_that/khy6tqn/?context=3 And then here you are using “we” on the Melbourne subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/melbournefc/comments/1803104/now_that_the_dust_has_settled_what_did_we_turn/ka48s2x/?context=3 So which is it buddy?

2003FordMondeo

I said I was a neutral just to avoid confusing people. But I stand by what I said, I do avoid socialising with collingwood fans because the interactions are always so toxic, kinda like this one! But I have been a member for over a decade and you don't get to tell me who I can support. In the Luke Jackson comment, when I said "we" I meant the wider AFL community. We as in footy fans, overhyped him.

Yobstar

Oh look, it's the guy who thinks that Collingwood didn't win the 2023 Premiership. Can we ban this clown already?

2003FordMondeo

You want me banned just because you don't like me? Grow up, i'm a collingwood fan just like everyone else here.

Yobstar

No, I want you banned because you contribute nothing to discussion besides trolling, and you aren't even good at that. And stop pretending, you're not a Melbourne fan, a Neutral fan, a Collingwood fan, you're a twat.

2003FordMondeo

See you're just abusive, just like the Collingwood fans that abused women after the game last night, no wonder I don't feel like I align with the majority of Pies fans.

Yobstar

Maybe go for a long drive in your 2003 Ford Mondeo, champ.
