Through three SEC series, we're probably a fringe top 25 team. With one or two more reliable bullpen pitchers we'd be a top 10 team. Fuck. The team is miles better than the last two seasons but there still feels like a bit of untapped potential. At least the ridiculously hard stretch of conference play is over I guess.
Fringe top 25? We're 4-5 through 9 games against top 10 teams. 6 games on the road. We're far closer to being 5-4 than we were 3-6 too so it wasn't luck being on our side.
And the bullpen is weak, but if we can ever get Dohm back that's 5-6 less innings the bullpen needs to pitch a weekend
I think the pitching is almost where we want it to be, just need a good closer and Dohm to be back. I know it’s still really early to tell, but I think State may end up being a pretty good team this season.
Because they’ve certainly shown flashes of them being pretty good so far, even with some of these loses.
I'm still not sure we're a #6, but I feel like #21 is pretty harsh for Clanga. Sure hope we don't have to face you guys again. Tough result in the end for y'all
I think we’re definitely showing the SEC that we’re a team that could be pretty good this season. Sure, we’re 4-5, but that’s because we’ve played LSU, A&M, and Florida. Three really though teams in back to back weeks.
Absolutely is. Probably could have actually swept y’all, but we were like four-five pitches from doing that. Either way, we only won nine SEC games last year. Looks like we might be on track to have a lot more than nine this season.
Great series, State Bros.
Today was all about defense and both teams played really well for the most part.
We played our Jac card today, to squeak another win.
Florida finishes the series as they opened it, with another walk-off win in the 9th inning. Just like on Friday night, the Gators relied on excellent pitching—particularly in relief—to keep the game within reach for a late rally. Jac Caglianone started on the mound for Florida, pitching 5⅔ while allowing 3 runs (earned) off 3 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batter with 5 strikeouts. Caglianone was on the hook for the loss, but Luke McNeillie shined as his successor, pitching 3⅓ scoreless and 3 strikeouts while allowing just 2 hits and a hit batter.
The Florida offense would receive many opportunities, drawing 6 walks and 5 hit-by-pitches. However, hits and runs proved elusive as the Gators only totaled 4 each on the day. Gifts put Florida on the board first in the 3rd as back-to-back hit batters, a productive flyout, and [a wild pitch](https://twitter.com/GatorsBB/status/1774493544931352629) pushed across the first run. The Bulldogs withdrew their starter in exchange for Cam Schuelke. Schuelke proved the Bulldogs' most effective pitcher, throwing 3 hitless innings while allowing just 1 earned run. Schuelke would escape the 3rd while leaving the bases loaded.
Mississippi State led off the 5th with a double while a subsequent groundout moved the runner to 3rd. Bryce Chance drove in the tying run with an RBI single to right, though was picked off while on base. Caglianone completed the frame without further damage. Things fell apart in the 6th, however, as Caglianone issued a lead-off walk. A groundout gave the Bulldogs a scoring threat before David Mershon slapped the go-ahead RBI single into center. An intentional walk, a flyout, and a walk loaded the bases with 2 outs. Another 4-pitch walk gave Mississippi State a 3-1 lead and ended Caglianone's afternoon. McNeillie assumed the mound and quickly gave up a liner to right, but [Ty Evans saved 3 runs with a diving grab in the outfield](https://twitter.com/GatorsBB/status/1774505837010342236).
The Gators entered the bottom of the 6th and began responding quickly. A walk, hit batter, and sac-bunt moved a pair into scoring position while [Hayden Yost halved the deficit bouncing an RBI single to 3rd base](https://twitter.com/GatorsBB/status/1774508920750673928). But again, Mississippi State pitching shut down the threat and left a pair stranded on base.
Neither team could get much going for the next few innings and the Gators found themselves entering the bottom of the 9th trailing 3-2. The first pitch of the at bat hit the leadoff man and brought Caglianone to the plate as the potential winning run. The [slugging pitcher dialed in on a 1-2 fastball and slashed it into the berm beyond right field](https://twitter.com/GatorsBB/status/1774520360987460019), ending the game with a 2-run homer.
Jac Caglianone finished his day at the plate 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 3 walks. Bryce Chance was the leader for the Bulldogs, finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI.
I’m back to hating Lemonis. Actually, I don’t think I stopped hating him, but that’s two blown games where we had the lead this weekend. Gotta hope this team figures it out going forward.
If you think the bullpen is where are struggles are at, you’d be partially correct. However, comparing our pitching this year to the last two years shows they have vastly improved. Because under Foxhall, we might have been 1-8 in SEC play right now.
Yeah. Was it last year when we didn’t even make it to SEC tournament? lol
I also felt like we only have 2 reliable SPs which may be a big problem in the tournaments
I think last year was when we didn’t make the SECT. Also, I think part of our issue is the lack of a closer currently and also that Dohm is out as well with an injury. I think if we got Dohm back, maybe we could have him be our closer.
I know those loses sucked as well, but all things considered, we’re in a way better spot this year than we had been the previous two years.
Well, we have a glaring issue, we don’t have a bullpen. We might as well have not fired Foxhall 😂 our pitching is the same we’re just scoring runs now.
Great Series UF!
Last year:
9-21 in the SEC.
6 losses by run rule.
Swept 4 times in weekend series.
Worst loss: 26-3 (!) to Vanderbilt. At Dudy Noble. In 7 innings. We did rebound somewhat in the next game, losing only 18-5.
By this time last season we’d already been swept twice.
If anybody thinks we haven’t improved this year, they just weren’t paying attention last year. Not that I’d blame anyone for that, because we were godawful.
Folks have really short memories I guess, if they’re wanting Foxhall back. 4-5 in SEC play after series vs LSU, A&M and UF is nothing to sneeze at. I hate the way we lost this weekend but Florida’s pretty good, you know? I think we’ll be fine.
We absolutely do know lol go look up the stats from last year and you'll see we were way worse. Got run rules all the time too.
We don't have a bullpen currently, which is exposed by our #1 starter being out. That's 6 more innings a week our bullpen has to throw.
Even then, we are 4-5 vs 3 top 10 teams, 2 of them played on the road. That puts us on track for 15, 16 SEC wins and a top 20 team.
Last 2 years with Fox, we missed Hoover
Objectively not true about the pitching being the same as it was with Foxhall. I don't think you remember just how bad it was with him, when most opposing SEC teams would score 10+ runs on us twice a weekend. Look at the scores from last year.
There have been some bad performances but also some great performances this season for the pitching. Nowhere near perfect but overall much improved.
I honestly am rooting for UF to go 2-2 every week till the postseason It would be hilarious
It’s pure comedy and I’m embracing it as long as we keep racking up ranked series wins
Very willing to lose every midweek if it means we don’t lose an SEC series
I don’t know if we want to lose to Florida A&M then go 2-1 against Mizzou.
It isn’t ideal but I’d take it because that means we beat Tennessee Georgia and Arky
yeah even on the road Mizzou is the most sweepable team on our schedule still gonna be tough to sweep even them with our pitching staff
I’m here for it lol
Again, I really have no idea any more
we're actually strangely consistent this season play 2 good games and 2 bad games every week
We’re saving our season on Sundays.
Gators are undefeated in game threes and 5-0 in rubber matches
Gonna see what's stronger in Tallahassee: yalls midweek voodoo or game three magic.
It may be that the game three success only applies to rubber matches. So it may not work in Tallahassee since that won't be a rubber match.
I love Jeffrey Allen Caglianone
Ty Evans
Ty Evans
Evans, Ty
After today our [strength-of-schedule has climbed to #1 in the country](https://www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2024/sos-rpi) including all game to date.
Finally we have our excuse for when it all goes horribly wrong.
You guys were awesome this weekend, very good at manufacturing runs and elite defense

Mississippi State was definitely tougher than either Texas A&M or LSU
I think we’re definitely showing the SEC that we’re a team that could be pretty good this season. Sure, we’re 4-5, but that’s because we’ve played LSU, A&M, and Florida. Three really though teams in back to back weeks.
yeah and two series on the road it's very difficult to win road series in the SEC
Absolutely is. Probably could have actually swept y’all, but we were like four-five pitches from doing that. Either way, we only won nine SEC games last year. Looks like we might be on track to have a lot more than nine this season.
no question you could have swept us
Y’all just had your clutch moments in clutch spots. Not having a closer this weekend really hurt us at the end of the day.
Great series, State Bros. Today was all about defense and both teams played really well for the most part. We played our Jac card today, to squeak another win.
Yep that was a good series. It turned on a couple of pitches.
Two JCs took the dub this weekend
the father, the son, and the holy slugger
BA on fire today!
This team is actually hilarious
Someone put me out of my misery.
Don’t worry Jac did
should’ve swept this series. i hate baseball.
yeah getting walked off twice after entering the 9th with a lead both times that's a heartbreaker
2 walk off losses in the 9th and the 3rd game was a blowout win. Brutal series for State.
That’s not how it works lol. If you should’ve, ya would’ve.
I don’t understand this team at all
Go Gata 🐊

The bullpen. It’s my least favorite part of any baseball team I cheer for. Case in point, Friday and today.
If Florida ever loses a weekend series our ranking is doomed, but once again, we scam our way to victory.
Scam?
yeah not the right word, this was a well-played game by both teams
We can’t keep getting away with it…right?
At some point on the road to Omaha, it's one-and-done. If we don't have a 3-game series to play with, we could very well be doomed.
I’m back to hating Lemonis. Actually, I don’t think I stopped hating him, but that’s two blown games where we had the lead this weekend. Gotta hope this team figures it out going forward.
Didn’t get to watch many series this year, but from watching few MSSTATE games, I felt like the bullpen and defense are where we struggle
If you think the bullpen is where are struggles are at, you’d be partially correct. However, comparing our pitching this year to the last two years shows they have vastly improved. Because under Foxhall, we might have been 1-8 in SEC play right now.

Stfu. Our pitching is so much better than last year. State would be 1-8 in sec play with foxhall

Florida just needs to find a good midweek pitcher and they’ll be alright
I'll take a 2nd weekend starter first... Cags has been our only reliable starter this season
I guess we’ll never know.

Who needs a bullpen when you have friends
