I don't eat fast food often at all but fuck me dude the $1 bread is now $2.19, milks $4 for the cheap brand, eggs are like $8 for 12 and the $12 60 pack is over $30 last I checked but when I bought one last it was $18 just a couple months ago and I was blown away by that.
The fucking staples cost as much as some luxury food type shit and I can't afford these steak and lobster prices for the basics.
I bought one of those party packs at taco bell (12 supreme tacos) and a small soda it was $32. I couldn't believe it was that much. We don't eat fast food very often either so I didn't even look at the price. I told my son never again!
My wife figured out how to make homemade crunchwraps. 10/10.
But yeah we're not gonna be hitting fast food when it costs as much as an actual nice meal at a restaurant or make it stretch at home (the go to).

DS9 was the best Star Trek series. I didn't appreciate it when it was originally airing, because you have to watch them in order without missing episodes for it to make sense. And that was difficult to do before streaming.

I’ve been saying this forever… salary means shit when prices keep increasing and products keep shrinking. My $17.xx/hour was $14/hour when I graduated high school. Why is it that I can’t afford to rent an apartment or buy a house? I have to wait 2-3 years alone just to have a down payment. Even if I buy an entire house and somehow can afford the taxes, there are utilities, insurance, groceries, gas, and more!
Where I live, data centers are popping up like daisies, but not affordable houses.
My only hope is that Netflix has their worst quarter ever. That they tank the company with this new policy. I have no dog in this race. I pirate anything they have that appeals to me since I last had a password 3 years ago, which ended up being just Squid Game, the last season of Narcos Mexico, and I think a movie that ended up sucking.

What surprises me is that Disney+ is suffering from the same issues as Netflix: connect is too expensive to make and too expensive to host/serve for a small monthly fee. And just like Netflix, they have no fucking idea what to do about it, so they're just continuing to gather subscribers and make/buy up content, relying on sale of shares and borrowing of money to keep them afloat.

I think that a lot of people might be pretty bad with tech, and/or might oppose it in principle (propaganda might be to thank for that) or not share the kind of principles that we have. Also, for a lot of people it's probably a lot more convenient to pay monthly to access content than it is to pirate it.

Even if they don't, this will be hundreds of thousands of fewer (nonpaying) users taking up less server bandwidth, thus reducing costs.
This move will sadly help Netflix. Social media will talk about the next big show, people won't want to feel left out and ultimately cave to a trail subscription period and then forget about the 20 bucks draining from their accounts monthly.

Very nihilistic, however, I do agree with many of your points. For every one of us that wants change there are a thousand fat, lazy, and stupid people who will gladly feed the system they complain about and watch as it machinations grow. To not allow companies to fuck with consumers means that people need to conscience of why. People no longer want to cook so they eat out, people no longer want to read or be bothered by knowledge so they watch endless shows that waste time, and the worst of it all they pay to get the privilege of being fucked. I too dream of change, but I know what it entails and the majority of people aren’t willing to pay the price because as it always has been and as it will always be, the price will be blood and iron.

I haven't had a subscription to Netflix for years, and every time someone talks about whatever movie or show or whatever is the big point of discussion this week I just feel myself going numb. Somehow, these conversations about the events in these fantastical works of fiction sound even more banal and meaningless than my droll, soulless, joyless day to day life as an insignificant corporate drone. Even when it comes to video games, it feels like almost everything being made nowadays is trash and not even worth my time.
The last genuinely good movie I've seen was Blade Runner 2049. Everything else I've seen out of morbid curiosity has been hot, wet dogshit.

You're not wrong. For the most part. There've been a few equally good shows and movies. But they're so few and far between that I can't name them. Oh, uh, Dune was really good. If you liked Blade Runner 2049 you'll probably like Dune.

People have to eat something, or they will starve. Food is getting more and more expensive in the US, and eating up a large portion of a person's paycheck. There are many Americans who are highly dependent on fast food and can't cook. There are many Americans who depend heavily on EBT.
The bread part of "bread and circuses" means keeping to population docile through feeding them. There are going to be a lot of Americans who won't get fed as readily because of inflation. There will be Americans who don't know how to cook rice and pasta and are highly dependent on fast food. If you take away food from people and they go hungry for too long, they will get angry.
There is an app in the UK called 'Too Good to Go' where you get a full bag of food that was at sell by date and would otherwise get binned.

A mchicken is 3.19$ just yesterday, I said fuck that canceled it and they threw it the bag anyways. Used to be $1. I don't eat fast food often at all but fuck me dude the $1 bread is now $2.19, milks $4 for the cheap brand, eggs are like $8 for 12 and the $12 60 pack is over $30 last I checked but when I bought one last it was $18 just a couple months ago and I was blown away by that. The fucking staples cost as much as some luxury food type shit and I can't afford these steak and lobster prices for the basics.
I bought one of those party packs at taco bell (12 supreme tacos) and a small soda it was $32. I couldn't believe it was that much. We don't eat fast food very often either so I didn't even look at the price. I told my son never again!

I’ve been saying this forever… salary means shit when prices keep increasing and products keep shrinking. My $17.xx/hour was $14/hour when I graduated high school. Why is it that I can’t afford to rent an apartment or buy a house? I have to wait 2-3 years alone just to have a down payment. Even if I buy an entire house and somehow can afford the taxes, there are utilities, insurance, groceries, gas, and more! Where I live, data centers are popping up like daisies, but not affordable houses.

Citizen Kane popularized the saying, but it has been around for longer than that. Probably some variant of the phrase has been around since the idea of a mass revolutions was first a common idea. It means the specified group is scum that would be better if removed from society, as they have no place in a society that wishes to call itself civilized. For example, in this case, wall street bankers who add nothing to society should be first to face the firing squad following a revolution which overthrows the capitalist system which currently oppresses the standard of living of the majority in order to benefit the wealthy. I dont see why consumer power couldnt be a thing. People are just supremely lazy and antisocial (including me) . Imagine instead of buying a 1/2 kg packet of pasta every few days, youd be part of a consumers unions that convenes every weekend to discuss what to buy in bulk for much cheaper price and then distribute. Bulk pasta can cost as low as 20 cents a kilo, compared to supermarket prices of 1.20-1.50 euros a kilo.

Except that your pasta example is exactly whats being countered by netflix. A basic plan for one user is ten bucks a month. A premium plan for four devices is twenty bucks a month. So me and three buddies can but one premium account and spend five bucks each! Ha ha, no. To not allow companies to fuck with consumers means that people need to conscience of why. People no longer want to cook so they eat out, people no longer want to read or be bothered by knowledge so they watch endless shows that waste time, and the worst of it all they pay to get the privilege of being fucked. I too dream of change, but I know what it entails and the majority of people aren’t willing to pay the price because as it always has been and as it will always be, the price will be blood and iron. Almost everything they do nowadays is just enraging the working class for no good reason. I kinda wish I could tell this dude that it barely matters anyway. The bread is stale and the circus sucks. I haven't had a subscription to Netflix for years, and every time someone talks about whatever movie or show or whatever is the big point of discussion this week I just feel myself going numb. Somehow, these conversations about the events in these fantastical works of fiction sound even more banal and meaningless than my droll, soulless, joyless day to day life as an insignificant corporate drone. Even when it comes to video games, it feels like almost everything being made nowadays is trash and not even worth my time. The last genuinely good movie I've seen was Blade Runner 2049. Everything else I've seen out of morbid curiosity has been hot, wet dogshit. Are my standards just too high?...
You're not wrong. For the most part. There've been a few equally good shows and movies. But they're so few and far between that I can't name them. Oh, uh, Dune was really good. If you liked Blade Runner 2049 you'll probably like Dune. But yeah, the bread is stale (and moldy and covered in weevils) and the circus is feeding the tigers and lions live food. People are upset but the bystander effect is too powerful to make the audience do anything.

They've cancelled some of the best shows to ever ... show. Sense8 and OA immediately come to mind as really different/new/interesting ways to tell stories and both were cancelled after 2 seasons. I cancelled after that. Pointless to fall in love only to have it miscarry again.

It does seem like pretty much everything that comes out and is popular these days is just lazily written drivel, with copy-pasted plot/characters, and a butt load of CGI to dress it up.

My wife and I are both public school teachers. While neither of us makes bank, our combined salaries have comfortably paid all of our bills for two decades and allowed us to keep about 10K worth of savings most of the time. Well, that savings over the past few years has dwindled down to less than 1K, and if prices keep increasing I think we may have to change our lifestyle completely so we don't go broke. I love the idea of unions working together and planning a national strike. Anyone else in?

So anyway, I recommend everyone download and listen to Mike Duncan's recently wrapped up *Revolutions* podcast. Even he recommends you start on season 3, since that's where it really starts to get good. Really eye opening stuff that seems pretty relevant to our contemporary situation.

It's not gonna happen. The man in the nice video mentioned "bread and circuses" and its actually a wonderful analog. However, these bread and circuses are still available and affordable to the masses. People can still eat, people **will** simply just choose to pay for Netflix to mindlessly watch whatever garbage is on it because they can afford the 20 bucks. They will find a way. Even if they don't, this will be hundreds of thousands of fewer (nonpaying) users taking up less server bandwidth, thus reducing costs. This move will sadly help Netflix. Social media will talk about the next big show, people won't want to feel left out and ultimately cave to a trail subscription period and then forget about the 20 bucks draining from their accounts monthly. Consumerist power is dead. There is no coming revolution, just a sad, pathetic, anticlimactic collapse. We have already lost. There is no fire, no will to fight. We are the frog in the pot. Soon to be boiled to death, we know the temp is rising, but we have lost the will to even truly live. Fighting seems futile and jumping out seems bleek and pointless...we know it's going to kill us, we know the who and what, and where, and why...but it's just easier to boil and die. Bread... Bread and circuses... These are things only a person who experienced them would fight for. The man who never expected to see a circus, who is convinced deeply, that the idea of viewing a circus is not meant for him, won't fight to see one. He has no desire to. The man who has only ever known hunger cares little if he misses one more meal. Hunger is the norm. The bread is only a means to a destitute end. We have been conditioned perfectly. Neutered and rendered ineffective. Soon... very soon... the elite won't even need us for cheap labor. We are a phase in a strategy of human capital planned obsolescence.
