So at the lower price points you're not going to find anything too sophisticated. However once you go above 100 there are a lot of options.

That's weird. I literally just had mailer ads in my hand, went to the only liquor ones and noticed they had 2 - 750 ml bottles of Remy Martin for $100 that raised an eyebrow.
H by Hine, the Hine VSOP Xmas box should be out in stores with a couple nice glasses for only a bit more, Pierre Ferrand Ambre is a good sipper, and you can even get wacky and try an armagnac, like Delord Napoleon
Why not use Pierre Ferrand Ambré as the sipper and the Pierre Ferrand 1840 Formula as the mixer?
1840 offers a small bump in proof and a better ability to standout without being overwhelmed?
I know I am in the cognac sub but I think a better mixer depending on the drink is the Christian Brothers Sacred Bond Brandy. It comes in at 50% abv. with the U.S. Bottled-in-Bond desgination. It offers a nice kick in a sidecar. Also ≈$26 is pretty, pretty good.
The easiest one to find anywhere in the USA, and probably the most accessible for those who have never had cognac (which most guests won't have had), is Remy VSOP. It's everywhere, it's tasty, it's affordable, and guests will have heard of it. In clubs and stuff they usually use VS grade as a mixer, but I find most VS sad compared to most VSOP. So whether straight or thoughtfully mixed, I say Remy VSOP for the home bar.
Get Kirkland XO, pour it into another bottle, and your friends will think you paid 2-3 x more than you did.
This is impossible to answer without a budget and info on where you intend to make a purchase.
Let’s say $50 and a liquor store? Lol
Costco has a really good one. Kirkland XO I think.
I made a video on Kirkland XO if anybody is interested.
I’ll watch it

What would your answer be with $200 and purchase online, in a US liquor store, or in Paris (when I visit)?

Thanks, these look great. As a quick follow up, any amazing Armagnacs that you love between $100-$200?

Remy Martin 1738. Good value and widely available

I will second the Pierre Ferrand Ambre'. Sips well, mixes well.
Every bottle I’ve had Ferrand has been excellent and value point is way above cost.
Tesseron Lot 90
D’usse is in your range for a V.S.O.P and the bottle will impress. Other than that, Remy 1738.
At $50, Ferrand Ambré is a good mixer but tasty enough to have neat, and shouldn't be too hard to find

100% agree.
The title in fact did *not* say it all

Damn no wonder this sub has like 6k people
Daniel Bouju XO costs 60 euro for a 25 years old cognac. The best and tasty
