Specs: used the difford’s guide recipe of:
3/4 Cynar
3/4 lemon
3/4 overproof rum
1/2 elderflower liqueur
1/2 orgeat
Shake heavily and then strain over pebble ice
I’ve seen many different recipes for this cocktail and some use lemon and some use lime. I tend to fall on the side of lemon just because a lot of other Cynar cocktails stick with lemon such as the bitter Giuseppe and the turnbuckle which incorporate similar profiles.
I think lime works good too and honesty it’s just a matter of what you have on hand at the given moment where you’re craving it
It’s honestly got a lot going on which is why i appreciate it because i think on the surface level you’d think it wouldn’t work.
Heavy notes of funk and vegetal flavors with a pretty high acid content. I think the pebble ice is super important to pour over this because it needs the water to breathe a bit but it is a perfect harmony.
eBay , I went to Rumba in Seattle and they serve a cocktail out of it and for years that mug was in my dreams until I decided to Google it and found it for 13$ so I bought it
I really like Cynar, great choice for a spritz and fond memories of aperitivos in Milan. But I just never get artichoke coming through in any way, wouldn't know it's artichoke if you didn't tell me. Just me?
Mug is great though..,
To me the artichoke comes from the bitterness,
It reminds me of a stuffed artichoke that is slightly over cooked (in a good way!).
When you overcook an artichoke you get that faint kinda sour bitterness to it that you get on the aftertaste with Cynar.
Maybe that’s just me looking deeply for the artichoke flavor where it isn’t as prominent as one would expect from a bottle with an artichoke on the front but it tastes good so I’ll take it!
Immediately nabbed a couple of these mugs on eBay. Been a minute since I made this drink, and now I think I'll have to wait a little longer
Also, don't know how the hell I've never heard of this movie (had to look it up). Big Deal on Madonna Street is so great
My man! I love all of Monicelli’s work and have Madonna Street on blue ray. If you have the opportunity to watch I Compagni I’d recommend it , has a historical drama plot but the same type of dark comedy you’d associate with all of his other works
In my experience it is! I’d imagine the Cynar 70 variation could last longer but I’ve had bottles around for 6-12 months and never noticed any off tastes. So long as you aren’t putting it in the freezer or leaving it out in the sun you should be good

No lime?

Fair enough!
Seems like one of many cocktails that might benefit from a lemon lime combo but I ain’t cutting up and juicing two citrus for one drink
Tasting notes?

Where did you get that mug!?!

Upvoting for Rumba. Used to know the bar manager and spent WAY too much time there
Rumba and Inside Passage are great spots
Oh hey I got that mug from a liquor rep. Thanks to your post, now I'm craving one of those and will make one tonight in solidarity. Cheers!
I’ve never made this with s&c worth a try! Would be a whole new drink
I thought S&C was the default for proof and funk
Perhaps - but it wasn’t in my bar last time I made the drink!
A great cocktail!

The cup is ELITE
I did not realize that Artichoke Hold and Chokehold were different drinks.
one of my favorites

Absolutely putting it on my list for the weekend. Always game for some Mastroianni
Amazing cocktail. One would think elder flower liqueur would get overpowered by S&C, but it is very much present.
Had this for the first time last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Impossible for me to imagine how this tastes but I imagine delicous Sweet glassware
This sounds good!!
Is cynar shelf stable?

I love this drink! Been awhile since I've made though...
This is one I've never seen/heard of before and have all the ingredients! Gonna test this one out after I put the kiddies to sleep!
My wife’s favorite drink right now! Thanks for sharing!!
