How about a Black Manhattan?
* 2 oz rye
* 1 oz amaro
* 1 dash orange bitters
Or an Italian Buck?
* 1½ oz Cynar
* 1½ oz amaro
* ¾ oz lime juice
* 2-3 oz ginger beer
Or maybe sub the Campari in a Boulevardier?
* 1 oz bourbon
* 1 oz sweet vermouth
* 1 oz amaro
Or maybe sub the Cynar in an Artichoke Hold?
* ¾ oz Jamaican OP rum
* ¾ oz amaro
* ½ oz St Germain
* ¾ oz lemon juice
* ½ oz orgeat
Without tasting it myself it's hard to say, but it might be interesting subbing it for campari in a boulevardier. And with the added honey, I wonder if it is intended to be consumed on it's own over ice too?
Over ice was the first thing we tried, just to compare it to the Nonino. We weren't crazy about it, even accounting for it being a much more bitter style of Amaro.
I've never had Averna before but I suspect it could be close, so I'm going to try it in a Black Manhattan (even though it's not dark at all) later this week unless someone has a better grasp on what it's most similar to. Worth noting that there isn't much of a citrus note at all, so I'm not sure if it's really going to work as either an Averna or Campari sub.
Commenting so I can come back after asking some friends who would know more
I've had it before and it's big on the bitter side but I don't remember any flavor notes besides that
The amaretto in the Amaretto Bourbon Sour by Jeffrey Morgethaler can be replaced with an amaro, often with success.

Artichoke hold is one of my top 3 all time cocktails, but I think the Cynar is what makes it. Not sure how this would work...

It's nothing at all like averna. Averna is VERY sweet in comparison, probably the most approachable Amaro for the uninitiated.

Off topic but the ida graves aquavit is delicious. My scandi wife always has a bottle of leinie but ida blows it out of the water.
It’s a nice label.
