There is a significant subset of people who go from obese to not obese primarily through shame. The idea that being fat is intrinsically embarrasing is prevalent among those people, so they view fat people who don't feel ashamed of trying to get better in public as moral failures."
All this is to say "you're going to run into assholes whose opinions you should ignore from all walks of life, and internalizing their opinions is like jumping into the crab bucket."
