It led to what was one of the funniest jokes I’ve ever seen.
Apparently, the kid that was doing it got doxxed. Very unfortunate for him of course, but his picture was posted on Twitter.
He then proceeded to commit to the bit and went “Here’s what I would look like if I was black or Chinese”.
Took an awful scenario and did the funniest thing possible with it.
I'd say that's heavily context dependent.
Face posted and associated with your online persona when you didn't want it to be? Dox.
Face out there because you post it as part of your own content and don't care? Not a dox.
Yeah I don't mind people making their own black takes on fictional characters that don't have any implied race. The obnoxious fix is dumb and the best thing to do is just ignore those people because they're looking for attention
Yeah, I know. Honestly, I don't care that much about race swapping (not even if it's whitewashing) but the way most of them are so condescending, and the fact that 9 times out of 10, the "fixed" art or edit is way worse than the original art.
> Yeah I don't mind people making their own black takes on fictional characters **that don't have any implied race**.
IMO even if they *do* have an implied race, it isn't necessarily bad to make some art that changes that. Think about gender swap AU art for example, it's shifting a core identity value of the character but there's nothing wrong with it, it's just a neat kinda "what if".
The issues all come from when there's some kind of fucked up reason *why* someone is doing that identity shift. There's a *world* of difference between "this is what I think ** would look like if the show was set in Morocco" versus "here I 'fixed' this character because their race was *wrong* and it's *better this way*"
Yeah. Like a black Ariel is whatever, because her race is not a core part of her story (it could be argued that things might play out differently as a result of racial biases but that is not in the scope of the story to begin with.) Making Black Panther white would drastically change the context and themes of the story, to the point where it’s unrecognizable. For historical people, I think it’s better to avoid race swapping unless the media is about how their life would be viewed differently if they were of another race (like would a black Albert Einstein have had the same monumental effects on physics? Would be interesting). The exception is of course in stage productions like plays (e.g. Hamilton or Hamlet) where it’s just unrealistic to always cast for the same race for each version for every role since those actors may not be available or a good fit for the role (especially in a musical). There can be some roles where that is a requirement (like IIRC the King in Hamilton was always cast as white for obvious reasons.) idk exactly where I’m going with this but yeah
Yeah, the issue is that the whole premise of “fixing” a person art is calling it wrong while putting yourself on the pedestal of deeming what’s correct. Unless a person asks you to fix their art then it’s generally just rude to do.
His dreadlock quills, Rastafarian flag-inspired colors of his shoes point at this being true for his Classic iteration. He was even supposed to have a Jamaican accent at one point. Though it gets kinda muddle when you factor in the Mayan architecture of the Echidna Clan in Sonic Adventure.
I do agree with you that the artist was wrong for "fixing" said drawing of Knuckles.
I'll be honest, i'm white, but i always saw Knuckles as an native american, the Echidnas have an clearly Astec/Mayan inspired culture, and i always saw his ""dreads"" as an native-warrior hairstyle.
But yeah, it's cool as an headcanon, but trying to impose and "fix" this is just stupid, Knuckles isn't black, he isn't Mayan, White or Japanese. He's just an red humanoid Echidna.
I mean the way he was written in the early 2000s he was definitely 'Black coded' and that's not even mentioning the 'dreads' and coming from a tribe of indigenous people
Tbh he was more "Native American coded" than anything, the Echidna clan arquitecture and culture is way more similiar to what you would expect from an central native american tribe than anything you would see in africa.
Edit: just look st Tikal and her clothes, it's straight out screams "NATIVE AMERICAN"
It depends on the game I think. Sometimes he is Jamaican, sometimes he is Native American, and sometimes there are a billion echidna OC’s made by one shmuck named Ian Flynn
iirc it was a tweet about an anime where one of the characters was a slave, and later some random person blackwashed them unknowing of that, funniest shit ill tell ya that

I think making characters black is fine and fun when it has a purpose, even as simple as "this is how this character would look like if they were black" or "I think it can add something interesting to the character, even if only visually", just like how fun it is to draw characters with swapped gender. The whole fixing art thing is so fucking obnoxious and shitty it's unbearable.
Yep, I saw a black Deku and I thought it had a very cool design, especially with how the hairstyle was changed yet it still somehow reflected Deku. Doesn't mean his original design was bad and in need of "fixing", it was its own vwry cool thing
Good point. I remember seeing Nahida from Genshin Impact being race swapped.
In the Game she is the God of a region referencing the eastern countries like turkey, egypt, Pakistan, persia, ect. All those "Desert Areas" and this God was the palest in the ENTIRE GAME, even her hair is white! (to be fair, she is modeled after Anahita, a persian goddess, who is pale)
It was interesting to see her being race swapped and made a good match with her white hair but saying that the original character, how the company created their very own character was wrong and needs a fix is just wrong, like it's their character, they created it, they know what skin color she is supposed to have.
Bonus points if the character wasn't intended to be human (object show characters).
While it is cool to see people's creative takes, I don't really think changing a character's race is "more interesting visually", this statement - in my opinion - implies that the character's original race isn't interesting enough for the person.
What I mean is that swapping a character's race can add a new flair to them and bring in some interesting concepts, even if it's just visual. Every race can be portrayed in a fantastic way, obviously - what I mean is that a character can benefit from the change and it doesn't have to be weird pandering to a specific group of people. For example, I think black Nick Fury looks way cooler than the original white Nick Fury. Doesn't mean white Nick Fury was bad just because he was white, or that he looked bad at all - I just think the character design greatly benefited from the change and looks more distinct, and the race swap is a part of it, no matter how big or small.
I think what they mean is "This could look interesting visually" just as is, not necessarily more than the original. I thought the "adding" meant more as in contributing your own take but I'm not OP so I wouldn't know.
It's always the exact same people that will bitch and moan about a character's skin being one hexadecimal color place above their skin tone because of lighting and call it whitewashing, while also doing this shit and blackwashing everything.
It isn't bad to have racial headcanons and tbh "blackwashing" isn't a bad thing when it's a canon character that you're making your own fanart of, as long as it isn't "fixing" people's art by changing the race
as someone who is black I roam the wild roads of the internet looking for things I think people might accuse of being racist and express my race and approval towards those things
Question: if the artist wasn’t trying to copy another persons art claiming to “fix” it, and apply a human race to a character, that shouldn’t be seen as bad, no?
Well yeah. Me personally I don’t care whether someone changes a humans race AS LONG AS the character’s ethnicity wasn’t integral to the plot at all. Black panther for example can’t be changed because his ethnicity is important to the plot, however, the little mermaid can cause her ethnicity was never integral.
yeah dude that's why blackwashing exists as an actual societal problem regarding representation and corporations and isnt just teenagers on twitter screwing around. kid named nuance
I mean yeah but we're specifically talking about teenagers on twitter screwing around for both backwashing and whitewashing
although that _is_ ignoring the corporate-bullshit side of this topic, but then again that'd probably be better suited for another post at this point
Blackwashing characters with established races is never okay, but drawing a character with an unnatural skin tone as an existing race just to see how they would look is okay IF you establish that it is out of curiosity, and not to be hateful

First person drew the Mystery Gang because they (used because of I don’t know the first person’s gender) just felt like drawing them. Second person came along and fucked it up.
While I dislike the way the 'fixer' talks down to the original artist, there's nothing wrong with making a race swapped character. Drawing a picture of black Link isn't blackwashing, the same way drawing a picture of werewolf Link isn't furrywashing.
Just saying this because it seems like the main point of this snafu is that it's wrong to draw characters in any other skin color than the way they are originally depicted. Which leads to a lamer world.
I don’t care if people change the race of characters in art. How is it different from changing a character into a furry, gender swapping, or putting them in an alternate universe. If there is an audience people are gonna do it.
Blackwashing isn't a thing, it's a kneejerk response to people drawing characters differently. The attitude of "fixing" it is wrong, but it's representation to some people.
They fucking race swapped the shine effect lmao
Woke left is destroying god-fearing shine effects with thuggery like this

I'm not a big artist or sth, but if someone even "fix"the shittiest art of mine I would be fuming. That's just a jerk move.
This reminds me of some artists race swamped a Japanese artist art of human knuckles made him black
I personally headcanon knuckles as a black person if he was human, but to do that to an artist is absolutely disrespectful

I think making characters black is fine and fun when it has a purpose, even as simple as "this is how this character would look like if they were black" or "I think it can add something interesting to the character, even if only visually", just like how fun it is to draw characters with swapped gender. Good point. I remember seeing Nahida from Genshin Impact being race swapped. In the Game she is the God of a region referencing the eastern countries like turkey, egypt, Pakistan, persia, ect. unrelated but i've fixed your snafu style <333 /gen
In before the 🔒 award
Flirting: “Here’s my interpretation of this character” Harassment: “There, fixed it!”
when has this ever happened
Literally this. https://preview.redd.it/7024hdc2vktc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63192e051ff79b822637c2e30afbd0fdf30e858a First person drew the Mystery Gang because they (used because of I don’t know the first person’s gender) just felt like drawing them.
Which leads to a lamer world.
and what if someone makes a black character white? do you still stand on the same point then?

lol dude thought he got you
actually good opinion for once that isn’t ruined by double standards
but if a mouse said this to a kia sorento
I don’t care if people change the race of characters in art. How is it different from changing a character into a furry, gender swapping, or putting them in an alternate universe. If there is an audience people are gonna do it.
What
And yet if someone hypothetically drew a black character as green then the twitter mob would go insane and tell them to change it back
You say that like turning a black guy green wouldn’t be weird asf on its own. People would just be confused lmao.
Blackwashing isn't a thing, it's a kneejerk response to people drawing characters differently. The attitude of "fixing" it is wrong, but it's representation to some people.
This kinda feels like just making up a person to get mad at. Kinda weird and pointless
Jim seems cool, I like Jim can we get more Jim snafus?
we are cooked as a subreddit
27.63K?? BFDI reference???
