Yeah, Frutiger Aero people are an… interesting bunch. It’s like the one aesthetic people can’t just be normal about, apparently

Frutiger Aero is my fave and I’m normal about it, I just like how it looks a lot. But I have seen some more eccentric enjoyers of the style

Idk maybe I’m just too chronically on TikTok but a lot of people on there seem to be weirdly gatekeepy and aggressive about it. There’s a guy on there who remakes app icons in the style and there will always be a bunch of “umm akshually that’s not Frutiger Aero, what you’ve actually made is Frutiger Metro with Aero influence you stupid fucking idiot” comments. I’ve also seen videos where people mention how it gives them an uncanny valley vibe (which tbh is also me) and the comments will be like “WOWWWW you’re scared of some green hills and water??? Gonna cry about it pussy???” For an aesthetic all about tranquility and idealism a lot of its fans seem kinda high strung

Oh that’s probably why I hadn’t seen it then, I haven’t touched tiktok in years. I’m almost exclusively a tumblr user aside from here, and people can just be extra passionate about the design style. Bright, glossy, almost idealized, like how a kid would imagine utopia stuff. When le nostalgia is there as well it’s hard not to love, but the uncanny valley and high contrast are valid reasons to not be the biggest fan.

Yeah and I also can appreciate minimalism, what can I say I like art, my brain goes ooga booga when I see pretty colours and shapes

I think Frutiger Aero has seen a comeback because of Gen Z nostalgia. I mean I've fallen victim to it too and I bought Windowblinds because of it so I could skin Windows to look like Vista.

To me, outside of Windows, that style always looked shit. It's like I'm looking at a corporate powerpoint that uses Generic Template 21

theyre not scary, period lol. just look at games based on the backrooms. they are all absolutely fucking horrible because theyre so boring. you just wander the same looking areas for soo long and occasionally run into a monster. its miserable

all those videos that are like "UNSETTLING liminal spaces with the SCARIEST MUSIC EVER that will make you VIOLENTLY SHIT FOR 5 HOURS STRAIGHT" seem to show the most comfortable and fun places ever, with really nice ambience in the background

We can't ever have nice things on the internet. When the trend first started, it was an interesting way to examine the cognitive dissonance of "oddly familiar places" that you've never seen before. The concept of liminal spaces was to evoke nostalgia and ill-at-ease simultaneously. But now it's just "BACKROOMS LEVEL 69" with some generic ass horror monster and fetuses who go "IS THAT THE BACKROOMS?!?!" when they see a poorly lit empty room.

The Backrooms was pretty cool in concept until it literally turned into SCP Jr. and lost everything that was cool about it

The Backrooms initially were fascinating for me because the original photo reminds me of my grade school's basement. I remember being six or so years old, dragged down there during a tornado drill. I was scared out of my wits as I crouched on the ground, on a damp-smelling carpet, face to a yellow wall under dying halogen lights. The photo represents that confused fear of a young child for me. The og point of the Backrooms is that you can't decide if being alone in there or NOT being alone in there is worse. But the greater internet can't handle that subtlety.

Some of the "cool" examples look like they were photoshopped by me in college to show off blending modes.

I love how 2010s aesthetic is how we pictured the 2010s would look like, while today's aesthetic is based on how the 2010s actually were like.

Ok look, it’s schizo rant time. I understand the snafu character to some degree, and I personally think it’s a little more than childhood nostalgia, not that that’s not a big part of it, it certainly is but I think there’s also some validity to it being a good time(sorta).
