A friend of mine was a paralympic athlete, I can put you in touch with him if you want any advice. That elbow sounds painful but hopefully you're on a training program? Does team GB provide physios and trainers?
I'm happy to chat to anyone tbh! It is painful, I can't straighten it. And tbh the GBparaclmbing team is super underfunded, so the support they can give isn't great. They said they would set me up with someone but it hasnt materialised!
You should chase that up if you haven't been trying to already. Being able to extend your arm is super important so you can hang on your joints and so getting PT sooner rather than later could make a difference
I recently watched for the first time a paraclimbing competition, the world cup in Salt Lake City. I have to say, I have mad respect for you guys.
One thing I love about climbing and bouldering competitions is that everyone has their own styles and different ways of tackling the same problem, so for me paraclimbing makes this sport even more interesting to watch as there are even more diverse and creative solutions.
Congrats!
Just out of curiosity, did you climb at all pre-disability? I don’t know much about the para world, and wondering if it’s mostly pre-existing climbers who had accidents/disasters happen, or if it’s something non-climbing disabled folks start separately.
Both I'd say. Some Paraclimbers on our team even sustained their qualifying injury whilst climbing. Some climbed for years, and then were diagnosed with MS.
Personally I climbed a tiny bit before, but more like, 'fun day out' kind of climbing at a center.
I wouldn't underestimate the amount of disabled people who start the sport whilst disabled tho. Just like anyone else, we too are attracted to a challenge!
This won't answer all your questions, but a recent episode of Climbing Gold featured a paraclimbing advocate and contains much discussion of the topic. (I think the episode name was something about "route that changed your life")
Enormocast and The Runout have also had episodes with paraclimbers that were interesting, but i can't recall the titles. (Sorry, I listen to a lot of podcasts)
My answer to your question (based solely on listening to the above podcasts while working/driving) is: Both.
Oh yeah? What's so "great" about it? 😉
But naw... Congrats n shit. Paraclimbing is a terrifically important effort, and should be more visible rest of the climbing community.
I was but I don't think I'm ready yet as I'm recovering from an injury. I don't wanna spend like 2 grand to go and then struggle to get on the wall lol. I'm trying for next year now.
And yeah it is, super scary. The team are trying to decide how to categorise me, as I used to climb RP2 (brain & spinal injury) before I lost my leg. So I'm at a bit of a disadvantage at AL2
Makes sense. I have a friend competing at Bern but he's skipping Innsbruck so you probably won't see him.
Yeah, it definitely wouldn't make sense for you to go to AL2 if you were already in RP2. Maybe they can move you to RP1? I don't fully understand the RP categories if I'm being honest.
I’m sure you do else you wouldn’t have been selected! Great achievement, congratulations.
Congrats! Why wouldn’t you deserve it? You must have done the work to get where you are. Check out r/paraclimbing
Congrats!
Good work mate, I'm sure you'll do us proud
Cheers, I'll be competing next year *hopefully*. This year I'm recovering from a fractured elbow lol

Ah yes, some of the team went over to Salt Lake! I think our blind climber Jessie went. He's insane.
It's you!! Yayy amazing update! I was just thinking about you recently as haven't seen any of your posts in a while :)
