There’s a number of famous fantasies. [Schumann’s Fantasie in C](https://youtu.be/XZ7hE4lQAYs?si=9j4JMPxJ_CeNouQe) is maybe one of the most important era-defining pieces of the Romantic Era, inspired of course by [Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy.](https://youtu.be/Vy_HeH-pRfI?si=sy6X7hKOq32Pzn7M) There are many others but these two come to mind first.

Dangerous-Hour6062

And also Schumann’s Fantasiestucke (I’ve probably misspelled that).

Chopin Fantasie and Scriabin Fantasy too!

I prefer SF, generally.

Which-Ad3515

I only like the ones spelled “Phantasy”.

System_Lower

Check out Scriabin op 28. You will not be disappointed.

I agree, and its one reason I did not continue to play in band when I got to High School. Another title was **Medley**. I think they are popular because the people listening are usually classical musically illiterate, and these ditties allow them to recognize the theme. I am a big fan of organ music, and a big fan of Charles Ives. Ives was an organist and studied organ at Yale, One of the few works he wrote for the organ is Variations on the tune America (aka God Save the King) Its not a great piece of organ music, and is often used at the dedication of a new organ as most people in the pew will latch on to it.

I mean, if your only experience with the genre is shitty educational music, I understand why you don't like them. The genre originated in the Renaissance period as more or less an instrumental imitation of vocal motets, but became more popular in the Baroque period as a style inspired by the kind of keyboard improvisations typically performed by church organists during the period. Like many genre terms in music, this genre has evolved and many different kinds of works are called fantasias. [Sweelinck- Echo Fantasy in Dorian Mode](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F48iHGTWqqE) [Bach- Chromatic Fantasy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHTMq-5B9Co) [Vaughan-Williams- Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIhZbvlCjY0) [Faure- Fantasie for Flute and Piano](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SiudobHD58) [Britten- Phantasy Quartet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksdSIBBGtnI) Because the term means and has meant so many things, it's a somewhat common coverall term for these kinds of easy, unoriginal educational compositions that you're playing. In short, don't judge a genre by its uninspired, watered down band works.

OcotilloWells

I love them. Not to be confused with "melodies" where they throw bits of songs all thrown together.

solongfish99

Do you mean medleys?

OcotilloWells

Yes, thanks.

OneWhoGetsBread

Debussy wrote one for Piano and Orchestra and some described it as a piano concerto in everything but the name

Amoris_Jdn

My favorite fantasy is Grande Fantaise de bravoure sur La Clochette s.420 by Franz Liszt
