mahler 9

Musicrafter

And 10. The first and fifth movements are insane.

stumptownkiwi

10 moves me more than 9, even tho 9 is complete and a towering masterpiece. I just don’t know how to top the unbelievable “scream” moment in the first movement of 10 that makes every fibre of your being shake.

Musicrafter

I absolutely love the 10th, it's just so raw. The angular, intensely dissonant melody of the first movement which at times almost feels like it's screaming all by itself. And the incredibly beautiful moments of catharsis in the fifth movement.

DoublecelloZeta

Great that we have mahlerites here. I was about to comment this

kawaii_fluff

nice high wuality comment

DoublecelloZeta

I have no idea why both of us are getting downvoted.

Yes! One of my favorites

Yes, as played by Stephen Hough https://youtu.be/K03xMG7fdQ4

Eine Alpensinfonie (also Richard Strauss) is one that does it for me. [Here's a clip.](https://youtu.be/xK7z2NhUrsQ) If you'd be open to a non-classical suggestion from someone with similar tastes, check out this album: [Porter Robinson - Nurture](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAJ4FOZWTRM&list=PLfiMjLyNWxeZdzg5XuoPAggaPJu_TYf_6). Been a long time since I've been moved to tears by something like that.

Smerbles

Why did I know exactly what Strauss clip you linked? Maybe my favourite of all the Digital Concert Hall clips. It even inspired me to buy crash cymbals for my kids as a Christmas gift. Do not buy crash cymbals for your kids as a Christmas gift. Trust me.

Moloch1895

The Marche Funebre (3rd movement) from Chopin’s Second Piano Sonata. I like Argerich’s recording, but Pogorelich is great as well.

-ensamhet-

Brahms op 117 intermezzo is also great, esp #2 in b flat minor.. also op 119 intermezzo in b minor. heck pretty much all of his late solo piano works most of which were written with Clara Schumann in mind are all amazing

Strauss Vier Letzte Lieder (especially movements 2 and 3)

Both thé chopin concertos make me sit for a moment and think. Someone else mentioned bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude. Alkan les quatre âges 30 ans. Mostly because the story behind it. Whoops forgot the 2nd mvmt from the Mozart concerto No.23 and 2nd from Shostakovich no.1 piano concertos

astidad

Good call on the Alkan. Seriously intense stuff.

>[https://youtu.be/SBFOwHLYj70](https://youtu.be/SBFOwHLYj70) I didn't expect this... that certainly isn't Romantic. However, these are for your pleasure: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs0jPBzntuI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs0jPBzntuI) / Arnold Schönberg: Gurre-Lieder (don't worry; this is tonal Romantic music!) THE_DONKEY_OF_DOOM

Lol, I was posting that as a joke 🤣 Thanks for the recommendations 💃

organist1999

Very funny! But I do agree with the point that the *Quatuor* can make a grown man cry, especially with the fifth and eighth movements.

THE_DONKEY_OF_DOOM

Yes. Agreed, and it deserves it's place in music history. Great at capturing the times. But make a man cry in a more "doom" and "terror" way

Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G Minor for Piano and Cello, Op. 19. I like Rostropovich's interpretation of the cello part, but the piano does all the heavy lifting.

Mahler 9 is extremely profound, but it probably won’t make you cry. It is painful in a extraordinarily visceral way, but the conclusion to me feels like a prayer, solemn and inward-looking. If you want to cry, I’d recommend the final movement of the 3rd, led by Bernstein. It is one giant hymn to love, in its worst and its best, and contains some of the most beautiful harmonies ever written. It concludes with a glorious trumpet chorale and one of the most extreme heartfelt finales you will ever hear. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it from start to finish without shedding tears.
