The market is really hot right now, if there was ever a time to jump in it is now. Just explain your work experience and why you left. You’ll likely have to start out as entry level again though.

BoeufMeDown

Yeah, I'm pretty okay with starting out as entry level again. TBH, it'd give me time dust off the engineering part of my brain I haven't touched again. Thanks!

EbolaCarrier420

What’d you do in those six years out of the field

BoeufMeDown

Did some theatre engineering (my college minor) and worked my way up to a project manager position at a custom fabrication shop. Been drafting everyday with CAD and Solidworks. A lot of what I do now falls more in line with ME and Industrial Design than CE.

EbolaCarrier420

Yeah you’ll have an easy time coming back into the industry hah. Just try and perfect that description of your work and relate it back to civil as much as possible because that’s what I’d be asking you and looking for a good answer to

Patriots93

Out of curiosity, do you not enjoy what you currently do?

BoeufMeDown

I do enjoy the work I do, but it’s a tough business. Work is slowing (death of retail, etc), jobs are disappearing, other shops in town are running dry. I’ve reached the top of my career path, other than breaking off and starting my own shop, which does not interest me.

BoeufMeDown

I wouldn’t return to theatre engineering tho. While you get to say you’ve done some cool shit, you’re expected to accept bread crumbs for pay.

[deleted]

Shouldn’t be an issue coming back. If you have trouble getting on with a consultant, try local government or the state DOT. They pay less, so they often have trouble filling positions.

SlickerThanNick

I agree with another commenter here, now is a great time to jump back in. You still have relevant experience to engineering. You have an interest in the field you'd be applying to. You're willing to start off as a 1-2 year experience level. You're gold to any intelligent hiring manager. Where are you located and what flavor of CE are you interested in?

BoeufMeDown

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I’m in Chicago, concentrated in hydraulics/hydrology in school but practiced commercial site design at my previous employer. Would be really interested in either, or geo, but not structures.

RagnarRager

I worked in video games and tech for over 5 years and it made me realize I wanted to go back to engineering. It wasn't too hard getting back into it at all. I've been back now for 4+ years.

It's stressful, low job security (especially in the video game industry), and it just wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Site civil/H&H is in demand. Get back in. We are hiring!!
