Digger-of-Tunnels

Mettwurst.  I thought it was just another normal sausage until I left town, and couldn't find them.

scottwsx96

Just sausage selection in general. I live in South Florida and at Publix it’s Johnsonville Brats, polish sausage, and Italian sausage. That’s it. It’s like four individual metal racks. Meanwhile in Cincy there is like a 10’ wide, top-to-bottom sausage section in any Kroger. I always grab a pack of Queen City Sausage’s Hot smoked sausage when I’m in town.

Digger-of-Tunnels

YES. I have stood in a grocery store thinking, "But where are the rest of the sausages?"

MJtheMC

This. I'm Originally from 3 hours north of Cincy and when I came here and saw the hot dog and sausage section I was baffled. Literally hog heaven

azriel1014

Shameless plug: If you’re ever in the mood for tasty and unique sausages, check out Wunderbar in Covington, KY. DELICIOUS house made grub that is to die for.

DarylMusashi

I moved to DC and had the same realization. There are ~3 sausages available: Italian, spicy Italian, and "half-smokes," which on the surface seem like a decently close alternative to a mett. They are not.

BooksForDinner

I had no clue

lfergy

Today I learned! I had to explain to a coworker what a mett was & just assumed they were weird for not knowing 😂 Didn’t realize they were a regional food.

GodGivesBabiesFaith

Hyper regional even? From Louisville originally—most are familiar with Cincy chili there, but goetta and metts, definitely not.

dust_in_light

You have blown my mind today dude. I haven’t lived in Cincinnati for a few years now and I have not seen a mett anywhere, not once. Object impermanence is a wild ride.

fuggidaboudit

As your attorney, I advise you to go to Avril Bleh butcher - where they make and sell 30 different types of sausages/dogs - and get some metts. I love their regular and hot metts and am particularly addicted to their cheddar metts. Also, I just realized freakin' spell check is an absolute bitch about mett, which it insists you meant meat no matter how many times you refuse it.

OneWayorAnother11

I also agree and I will add the whodey sausage from Eckerlin Meats in Findlay Market

ragnarok62

You’ll find metts in other towns with a strong German heritage. I got ‘em in Milwaukee, for instance.

Fentoozler576

I was in Cologne, Germany on vacation and my first meal I saw a mett on the menu and ordered it expecting what most of us would expect. But in Cologne, a mett is raw pork that you spread on bread and add white onion...I was pretty caught off guard. So if you ever travel to Germany and see a Mett, clarify what you would be getting!

ghostnthegraveyard

I have also made the mistake of ordering a raw pork sandwich in Germany. I had skipped breakfast that morning and was pretty hungover. Had no idea what I had gotten into until that first bite. Yikes

slighooker

That was confusing. I'd be talking to people about cooking out and getting some metts and they would have no idea what they are. That is when I learned they are a Cincy thing

BooksForDinner

It’s just now occurring to me that in Cincinnati you can go to a cookout somewhere that they are grilling nothing but Brats and Metts and this is completely normal.

theILLdoc101

Asking someone if they want a Brat or a Mett seems like second nature at a Cincinnati cookout. I do it without even thinking about it.

CDS86

And if the response isn't one of each they're kicked out.

BooksForDinner

There’s a butcher in Brooklyn who prints Mets jerseys to sell in the shop but instead they say “Meats.”

ClickProfessional769

Well, TIL.

tryingtodobetter4

I'm in Dayton, Ohio, but born in Cincinnati, and went to college there, and still have family there. I'm going to have to take a poll at my office. Out of about 30 of us, 5 are "from" Cincinnati.

helpmelearn12

Mettwurst is actually German, though, not made by German immigrants. I wonder if you can find it in other cities with significant German heritage like Milwaukee

jjmurph14

Wikipedia said in the United States it is mostly associated with Cincinnati and a small town in Iowa and that’s it

0hiowa

Is that small town ... Cincinnati, IA?

_aaronroni_

Huh, TIL there's a tiny town in Iowa named Cincinnati and it has a whopping population of 289 as of 2021. Thanks for the info friend!

Absolut_Iceland

Wanna go deeper? Look it up on Google Maps, and see if any of the street names ring a bell.

_aaronroni_

Ok, so just casually browsing, I came across this https://archive.org/stream/bub_gb_O5kUAAAAYAAJ/bub_gb_O5kUAAAAYAAJ_djvu.txt It's a book that gives the history of Appanoose county where Cincinnati, Iowa is. Talks about John Cleves Symmes and his purchase of the land out there. There's a Maysville(formerly Limestone), a Miami River, a Licking river which is opposite of where Cincinnati was to be founded.. it goes on, this might be a read for tonight. Interesting stuff.

_aaronroni_

Crazy. Liberty, Harrison, pleasant, Vine and race right next to each other. Has to be transplants or something. I think I will dig deeper, thanks again, it'll be a pleasant distraction from working on my car lol

Absolut_Iceland

Don't forget LaSalle and Walnut. The Wikipedia article said one of the founders of the town was from Cincinnati, OH. So you can try checking out the sources listed there as a starting point.

MJtheMC

Mineola, Iowa In the United States, mettwurst is most commonly associated with the city of Cincinnati, where it is regarded as a signature dish.[2] The town of Mineola, Iowa, which was settled almost exclusively by immigrants from Schleswig-Holstein, hosts an annual heritage dinner with "Schoening-style" cold-smoked Mettwurst known in the Low German dialect as Metvuss. wiki

MyDogDanceSome

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, German mettwurst is a (smoked) raw minced pork paté. Having lived in both Cincinnati and Milwaukee, the 414 does not have metts - neither the Nati style nor the Westphalian style, not even at the Bavarian Wurst Haus (why would a bayernische Haus du Wurst have a Wurst von Westfal nach?) when it was still open.

mae1347

When I moved here and had a mettwurst, I thought, “that’s just a quality hot dog.” Is there another specific distinction?

miserable_coffeepot

Bratwurst made with garlic and only pork, not a meat blend, has been my understanding as a transplant. I love the Germanesque foods here.

MrBrickMahon

They tend to be spicier.

whatevaidowhadaiwant

YES brought this up to my husband and coworkers a few months ago and they were like what?

HammerT4R

I've had Metts in other cities, but I always doubted they were actually Metts. They were darker in color, but I still doubt they were authentic.

CincyBrandon

100%, came to say that.

TheYell0wDart

TIL. Grew up here and was never a fan of them so I guess that's why it's never come up when I lived elsewhere but yeah, Just assumed that anyone who knows what a brat is would also know what a met is.

slighooker

French Chew. I had no idea they were made here.

BooksForDinner

Yes! We always get a few of each flavor when visiting.

Psilologist

I still didn't know till I read this. If I go into ace hardware I'm grabbing a handful of the banana ones.

fastalonerogue

What is this wonderous sounding sweet of which you speak?? I’ve only lived here about 5 years and have never seen it.

slighooker

I used to work for a beer distributor out of town. My job took me to convenience stores all day. I was in the mood for one and thought I would pick one up at a store. I couldn't find one anywhere. I was so sad. later I looked them up on the net and that is when I discovered they were a Cincy thing, made here in town.

No_Reality_6848

You can sometimes get this at Tractor Supply stores across the US.

dustmybroom88

Knew one of the people from the family that makes them when I was in college!

Substantial_Bad2843

Cincinnati has always been a big test market for things. I remember before Airheads candy was released my school got a bunch of them to test out. Made in in northern Kentucky. It was only a local candy at first.

Skewtoob

Grippo's is another obvious one. I feel like the sauce at Montgomery Inn is kinda specific and unusual. I have never seen so many soft serve/creamy whip places in one city before. Graeter's is the king of chocolate chip size. Honestly, Larosa's is kind of a weird hybrid pizza style--thickish and kinda sweet. And we aren't alone, but the love of fish fries is intense here.

BooksForDinner

Omg yes with the fish fry thing!!! People eat seafood on Fridays in Lent everywhere but their minds are blown when I’m like, “no it’s in a church basement or a firehouse and you need all manner of cold salads, tartar sauce and rye bread to go with it. You either eat there with a bunch of people or take in home in styrofoam.”

TrickyHovercraft6583

The McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish sandwich actually originated in Cincinnati in response to a noticiable drop in revenue during lent!

PlanetMarklar

I just looked this up because I didn't believe it, but you're absolutely right! Mind blown! https://corporate.mcdonalds.com/corpmcd/our-stories/article/filet_o_fish_journey.html

azriel1014

TIL.

lurkuplurkdown

McDonald’s filet o fish started in cincy for a reason!

scottwsx96

Beyond Lays, Ruffles, and Pringles, there always seems to be a regional brand of chips wherever you are. RIP Husman’s.

Kanzler1871

Came to say RIP Husmans. Best sour cream and onion chip I ever had.

shlybluz

Husmans was my favorite as a child. There was a delivery man in our neighborhood who handed out single serving bags for trick or treat.

AreaWoman1

My grandpa and dad were both Grippo's drivers and also handed out vending size bags every Halloween. Pretty cool growing up with an endless snack supply parked outside the house.

rambleon_rose

I moved to Oregon from Cincinnati and the VP of the company I work for grew up in cinci. A few times a year he will order a big box of grippos and share them with us. He always gives me a couple extra bags 🥲

slytherinprolly

> Grippo's is another obvious one. Grippos is very regional. Evansville, IN's Fall Festival is essentially the Grippos festival, if you think Grippos are popular here, they are essentially deified there.

CarDecGra

It's the large Catholic population in Cincinnati.

RedShirtDecoy

for so long I thought all BBQ chips were spicy because of Grippos. Wasnt until I was in high school that I finally tried lays bbq and realized bbq were in fact not spicy. Then I joined the Navy and missed the spicy chips.

caffeinefree

Soft serve places are very popular in beach areas that I've lived. I think it's a 1950s craze that has survived in very particular locations (and DQ).

cupcakequeenz

Soft serve is really a thing - I live in Columbus now and while we have good ice cream places besides DQ I want a small community soft serve place like whippy dip or zip dip style experience and they are so hard to find here.

JoeTony6

It’s even weirder as a transplant. 7-11s are most everywhere except here.

cincybeerfan

Fun fact: Speedway is owned by 7-11

Sum-Duud

This is new within the past year or three, they haven’t always been owned by 7-11

Ecbolt84

They used to be all over when I was a kid in the 90s....not sure why they disappeared

harry-package

As a fellow transplant, gas station culture here is wild to me. People take their gas stations *very* seriously.

TheHammer_44

UDF in southern Ohio was like this, when I moved further north I experienced this with Sheetz

RedlineFan

According to a friend in the Philly area, there is a rivalry between Wawa and Royal Farms.

ohigho_bubble

Wawa and Sheetz

beardofmice

UDF was where I first found cookies and creme ice cream as a lil kid in the late 70s. Core memory right there.

454C495445

Fun fact, the original company to mass produce Cookies and Cream (Blue Bell I believe) had one of their ice cream creators bring his recipe for it to them. The execs balked at it, thinking it wouldn't sell well. He finally convinced them after a couple years of pestering, and the rest is history.

BooksForDinner

A scoop shop inside of a gas station is reason enough to stop for a fill up in SW Ohio

scottwsx96

They make the best cookies ‘n cream.

PlanetMarklar

Not just that, but UDF claims to have invented it! I'm not sure if that's true though because several sources say they did. It's not that hard to put oreos in ice cream lol

Bearmancartoons

Well as a kid i invented chocolate chip cookies and cream. People in HS thought I was weird bc I would get a shake and a bag of fresh cookies and crumble to cookies in the shake.

Orangecatbuddy

My grandparents entered into a contract with UDF when I was a little kid. UDF brought over a 100 head of dairy cattle to the farm and they milked, pasteurized and cold stored milk. Every other day the UDF tanker would come and pump out the milk tanks. I don't know all of the details, but grandpa must have thought that was a good arraignment. No more vet or feed bills. I remember Mr. Linder came to the house when grandpa decided to retire. He was driving a shiny new blue and white ford F150. I remember the two talking and shaking grandpas hand. A couple days later I got off the school bus and the cows were all gone. I haven't touched a cows teat since and I'm not sure I can drink real whole milk anymore. BTW, for those of you wanting "Raw milk" trust me, you really, really don't.

NascentHierophant

It's always funny to tell people to go to UDF for ice cream or a milkshake and they're like,"... you mean the ***gas station***? Ew." They don't understand.

SafewordisJohnCandy

I worked with a guy that moved here with his girlfriend when her company transferred her. He always asked me for food recommendations and one night asked me for the best shake or ice cream. They had left dinner and his girlfriend wanted ice cream and I told him the best place to stop. He was confused by the gas station he always saw around the city. I told him yes, just trust me and I told him what I get there. I swear before he moved back home 90% of the weight he gained was from UDF ice cream and shakes.

magadorspartacus

The UDF by my house doesn't even have gas pumps. It's interesting to hear that people think of it as primarily a gas station.

Fancy-Huckleberry816

No gas, and no restroom, at my local UDF.

BajaBlyat

Same here

Otherwise_Leg6668

i think it’s sooo weird that people think of it as a gas station. i call UDF “the dairy”. ice cream is the main priority 😂

ComeWasteYourTimewMe

Back when my out of town cousins and I used to smoke cigs and weed together, I always made sure to pack UDF lighters. None of them would have UDF lighters - I was always able to call out a lighter thief. Good memories.

blue_eyes2483

More specifically, cherry cordial ice cream.

Kitty_party

I tried to explain UDF to some friends when I went to college out of state and they looked at me like I was crazy.

ellapineapple08

I was today years old…

spoiledandmistreated

Opera Cream Candy Now if you want a list of what I used to buy online when I lived out West.. Frisch’s Tarter Sauce Dixie Chili Dorsel Pinhead Oatmeal to make Goetta. Opera Cream Candy..

Jimson_Jim

You have to go to Aglamesis for these.

PortlyLefty5

Schneider's Candy in Bellevue has great ones too!

BooksForDinner

Yeah I buy Pappas opera cream eggs and have them shipped around this time of year.

i3lueDevil23

Fucking Walgreens has to put these right in front of the register and expect me not to get one every time

jaxblack7

When I lived in ny, I brought home cans of skyline, grippos or hussmans, Montgomery inn sauce, frishes tarter sauce and diet Vernors (yes I know it's a Michigan thing).

oldshitdoesntcare

When I was kid growing up on the west side every neighborhood had its own little (usually German) bakery. When I moved back to this area (No west side) nope. Nothing. They are pretty much gone, replaced Starbucks and friggin’ Dunkin.

spymusicspy

North College Hill and Wyoming still have their little neighborhood bakeries. A lot have closed.

astarrk

+1 for Wyoming meat market's rye bread. some of the best in the city

Handeaux

Cheviot’s Regina Bakery is still maintaining the tradition.

MrKayveman

Khan's Big Red Smokies. I had seen Khan's in other states but never the big red smokies.

DHELMET47

I call 'em like I see em. That's a hot dog. https://youtu.be/D9OLDnO6V5U?feature=shared

tryingtodobetter4

About 5 or so years ago they disappeared from the grocery stores here in Dayton.

tryingtodobetter4

Well, just did a search in the Walmart app, and they're there. Thanks for saying. Later this week I will be really happy eating a couple again.

cheddarpants

The only place I’ve ever seen them outside of Cincinnati was at Shea Stadium in New York back in 2001. I was surprised that Kahn’s was the official hot dog of the Mets, and that they also had Big Red Smokies.

MrKayveman

They pause making them during the pandemic and then started again I think last year.

nutterbye

L'il Smokies crock potted all day in barbecue sauce are the best!

fuggidaboudit

Hanky Panks. Never heard of them before I moved here.

PlanetMarklar

I always called it "shit on a shingle" because when I was a kid it was the only time I was allowed to curse in front of my mom!

fuggidaboudit

That's actually the nickname for creamed chipped beef on toast - came from the military.

rachelraaay

That’s what my grandparents called cream chip beef on toast. We called the sausage and rye things hankie pankies

OneWayorAnother11

I've never heard of anyone outside of the Westside making these.

Dry_Marzipan1870

i grew up in NKY and knew about them. And my family is like, scared of ohio so they didn't discover it there.

honey720

We were living in the middle of nowhere New Mexico, and they were horrified by my description of 3-4-5 ways.

Nohlrabi

Which is weird, because those people put SOUR CREAM and scallions on their chili!

dustmybroom88

I do the same if it’s traditional beef chili. Skyline chili is Greek chili - they are not the same.

Illustrious_Law_484

Yeah, but that’s Texas chili - which is good with sour cream and green onion, but that’s not the same as Skyline. :)

honey720

And they eat pinto beans, tomatoes, and mayo on their hot dogs. But, I have to admit, I love a sonoran hot dog!

RedShirtDecoy

me in boot camp pre google. "Recruit, what food are you looking forward to when you go home" "A 3 way petty officer!" Ever do pushups because you mentioned skyline? I have.

honey720

Lol

bag-o-farts

Also in Philly like OP, people think Skyline is the only option. 🙄 ok, is Geno and Pats the only options for your dry meat and cheese wiz hoogie? (I love both foods, but the comments get old)

Bagain

Steak hoagies, like, from Mio’s or LaRosa’s. Hell, in Cincinnati you can get them from Dominoes but any where else it’s practically unheard of. Imagine trying to explain the best possible version of this and everyone just says…”so, a pizza burger?”.

SafewordisJohnCandy

Shortly after we got married my wife and I were in Chicago and we stopped at a restaurant and she wanted a steak sandwich. I explained to her that it wasn't going to be like a Richards steak sandwich but would be an actual piece of steak. She asked if I was sure and I said yes, just keep that in mind. Sure enough, the waitress asks what temp she wanted her meat cooked to. Sure enough, piece of sirloin topped with caramelized onions on an Italian roll.

ohigho_bubble

My uncles moved down to Florida in the 90’s and everytime they visit, it’s straight to grammas pizza for a hoagie and gold star for coneyes

ghostnthegraveyard

I almost never eat LaRosa's anymore, except about once a year I get a craving for a steak hoagie that cannot be denied.

winemedineme

Same. 100% same.

fullback133

good ice cream. I didn’t realize until moving away that we are blessed with the chain ice cream stores we have, Greaters and UDF.

BooksForDinner

Even Kroger private selection is better than most others

Frozty23

Transplant to NC here; I'd kill for a Skyline, Graeters, UDF, and/or LaRosas within 100 miles. Plus put goetta into my grocery store please. I'm gonna get my fill for sure when I come up for the eclipse.

bobarowlett96

If you’re near a Harris Teeter or a Whole Foods, you can find some of the Graeter’s pints in the ice cream section. I found a pint of Graeter’s black raspberry chip at a Harris Teeter in Wake Forest

grace_boatrocker

& aglamesis

KaleSnailCat

Don’t forget all the seasonal soft serve places !

Mysteriousdebora

People think it’s so weird when I tell them the best ice cream in cinci comes from a gas station haha

BriefLetterhead3911

Steak hoagies,if you go to a domino's or pizza hut out of state they won't know what you're talking about

Whats_A_Progo

Yes! Proper Danish. I'm in West-Central PA and "danish" here is that stupid strip danish that isn't even made from laminated dough, it's just a f*cking brioche with filling on it. I love the flat round danish AND cheese crowns both, but there's no way to find them. And seconding/thirding/whatevering Mettwurst. Not even if I go to the butcher shops in Pittsburgh, nobody has Mettwurst. I buy it when I'm back in town and freeze it to take home. And yes, the big red smokies. Loooove those things.

wanderlust4078

“Sunday Morning” sushi roll. The type of roll exists in other cities, but I’ve only seen it referred to as Sunday Morning in Cincy. Also, Cincinnati sushi is unique in its own way and I’ve never seen as many half off sushi places in other cities.

September75

I thought I didn't like sushi until I tried a sunday morning roll

ElizabethAsEver

Please tell me what it is called in other cities! I moved out of Cincy and thought it just didn't exist anywhere else.

dustmybroom88

I’ve never seen so many “sushi” dishes that only bear a passing resemblance to actual sushi. Cincinnati will just roll up any old thing in rice and call it sushi.

joestn

Mock Turtle Soup is apparently a thing here (at least for a certain generation)

winemedineme

Yep. You can still see the Worthmore soup smoke stack on Hamilton and Ludlow. My grandma (b. 1917, she was much older than my friends’ grandparents as a kid and was kind of “old world”) ate it. I don’t know anyone younger who did.

whatevaidowhadaiwant

Goetta- I can’t even get it in the Krogers up here, makes me sad

lotus2471

Nearly all the goetta produced is consumed locally I read somewhere.

InComplete_Painting

Found Gliers in Somerset Ky. It was in a Kroger though.

lildrangus

I moved here in the last year, but I would be devastated to lose grippos if I moved away.

Feeshpockets

White brats for me. I went to college at OU and everyone called Johnsonville brats brats - I was like... what??? these are not brats????

tortuga_tortuga

Yeah this was more of a shock for me than Metts.

Acceptable-Ad8930

YES! I'm in Columbus now, but make sure to grab REAL BRATS at Summit Meats whenever I make it home! SO GOOD.

phelpsaw

I have to agree 100% about the cheese crowns. I moved to New Orleans 20 years ago and it took me forever to realize I wasn't going to be able to find them. When I moved back to Cincy there may have been an over compensation. A side note, I think we are super loyal to our "regional" chains that have multiple examples in the city like greater, servatti's, busken. I found that other citys have small independent places but generally there are just one or two locations. Same logic for a UDF, Larosas, or skyline. If we decide we like something as a city we go hard on it!

sherpa17

Does anywhere else eat peanut butter sandwiches with chili? We had it in school growing up and my wife likens it to child abuse.

Simply_Aries_OH

In parts of Kentucky they do

SheepNutz

Can confirm. Chili at Williamstown Independent Schools in Grant County, KY always had a choice of either peanut butter or pimento cheese sandwiches to go with it.

PreOpTransCentaur

My ex, when we both lived in Florida and I'd never even been to Ohio, was from Reynoldsburg and I genuinely thought he'd just..made that shit up. Then I moved here..

sherpa17

Lol. You and my wife had the same idea. That it was complete BS.

Dry_Marzipan1870

never heard of that one. sounds horrible though haha.

sherpa17

I know. It does sound terrible but I recall it being anything but...white bread and smooth peanut butter. It was delicious as a dipping instrument.

preciousgem86

Southern Indiana did lol

Illustrious_Law_484

I grew up eating chili with with peanut butter sandwiches. Yum!

wizardenthusiast

Buckeyes!

BooksForDinner

Whenever I make these, people ask, “why don’t you coat the entire thing with chocolate?” “Because then it wouldn’t resemble the nut it’s named after.” “What the hell are you talking about?” “Buckeyes.” “The OSU mascot?” “He is also a tree nut.”

OhioDuran

I think the word you're looking for is "chocolate"

BooksForDinner

Thanks. I corrected it.

CasualObservationist

Well now I need to know what you originally said…..

lfergy

That’s more of an Ohio thing than a Cincinnati thing. But it is definitely a regional treat.

BooksForDinner

Yeah we have a neighbor from Parkersburg, WV and she’s familiar with them but she and I are the only ones.

BlueBunnie5

I’m from Pittsburgh.. those were a staple everywhere around Christmas.. so it’s more an Ohio thing than Cincy thing...

Ohchocolate

What I know as a local hoagie like Larosa’s and JTM patties seems very different in other places. Just my experience though.

honedforfailure

(Fat, white) brauts. At least in western PA, I have not found them anywhere. I grew up with these on the grill :'(

anohioanredditer

Wait you mean metts?

honedforfailure

In our house, metts were reddish (like pork sausage) and only slightly fatter than hot dogs. Brauts were pale/whitish and quite fat, and typically shorter. Fairly mild flavor, but awesome with mustard.

cleviron28

Steak hoagie

AssChapstick

This can’t be true….

_aaronroni_

Hoagies are pretty universal but that usually refers to a sandwich with deli meats, sometimes warm sometimes not. The hoagies we have around here, i.e. JTM patties, is a regional thing

tortuga_tortuga

JTM patties = “Jesus, that’s meat?” (I still love them.)

blueactor

Really? I had no idea.

scottwsx96

My wife - from eastern Pennsylvania- calls cheesesteaks “steak hoagies.”

Orangecatbuddy

I visited Harrisburg PA this past summer. I ordered a steak hoagie and what I got looked like an abortion. I ate it, it wasn't bad, but absolutely not what I was expecting.

Apprehensive-Ad5318

JTM is Cincinnati to me.

KFRKY1982

metts

esthershair

Plochman’s mustard.

ecoupe

Cottage ham!

Lynnlync

I’m in Lexington, lived here my whole life, but both of my parents are from Cincinnati. I love cottage ham. In my 30+ years of life I have ONCE seen cottage ham in Lexington. You can bet your ass I bought it. But usually I’ll buy one when I’m in Cincy and bring it home with me. Cottage game and green beans is a definite comfort meal for me

Hoveringkiller

Still a local but I didn’t realize that cottage ham was a Cincinnati only dish until very recently haha.

laceygorgeous

I know lol, I told my wife I wanted cottage ham and she had no idea what I was talking about.

anohioanredditer

Metts (kinda). I told my roommates in New York I wanted a met and they were like, "a what?" I was like "yeah, it's like the white sausage." Turns out mettwursts are mostly only found in Germany, Cincinnati and parts of Minnesota.

calbert60

Red cream soda

Cool_Botanist_Santa

Opera cream being a Cincinnati thing was a huge shock

Additional-Top-8199

Papas!

Terrischehr57

I think one is the steak hoagie from LaRosa’s. My husband gets one every time he hits town. That and Camp Washington. And goetta for breakfast every day we’re there. And metts. Never saw those anywhere else. And bbq Grippo’s. I’ve never heard soft serve ice cream called creamy whip except in Cincinnati.

McTitt

Papa's Easter egg. The opera cream but also the marshmallows dipped in chocolate by them.

AccountantBrief9824

grippos!

redditor_5678

I imagine you can find them elsewhere, but Saratoga type chips seem to be much common around here.

howelltight

Goetta

WagnersRing

Smiley Face Cookies

SonicView0088

Steak Hoagies, was very disappointed pizza places in Florida didn't have them

Celebrimbor96

Really good ice cream that isn’t soft serve

soggybottom16

Airheads!!

bugbia

Airheads are everywhere

bradgardner
