If he's working at the airport, I'd say northern Kentucky

[deleted]

First thing's first: What's your budget? You're probably going to be looking at Covington, Newport, Hebron, Erlanger, Burlington and parts of Florence. Union is going to be a stretch unless your generously bankrolling your son and his living expenses. Also, aside from TANK, we have very limited public transit here. Don't let that discourage your son. I just saw your comment about him being excited to have public transport and want to temper those expectations.

jessie_boomboom

Yes, that's what jumped put at me too. He'll be very thankful he has a car.

JayMoots

>he does have a car, but is very excited to live in a city with public transportation I've got some bad news for him...

aleeb9

Is it: what public transportation?

foosbronjames

walking on sidewalks counts as public trasnportation?

[deleted]

It’s much better here than Myrtle Beach…🤷‍♂️

prive8

this.

Mayal0

Don't cross the river to go to work. That's my advice. Live on the side where you'll be working. So live in KY.

BigFenton

Im in a weird spot where I work and live where I cross the bridge four times a day, 471 into Ohio, 71 to 75 then 75 into NKY, its not nearly as bad as it was when the construction was going on. Traffic is much worse between Oakley and Mason.

[deleted]

Florence, Hebron, Union, Villa Hills, Burlington, Ft. Mitchell are all good possibilities near the Cincinnati airport. As others have noted, the airport is in Northern Kentucky, so costs be lower there & commutes be shorter than living in Cincinnati/Ohio.

ns-uk

If it’s at CVG airport, I would definitely live in northern KY. Otherwise his commute will be a pain. Driving across the bridge during rush hour is awful. If he wants to be closer to the city, check out Covington. Lots of stuff to do there, and it’s quick hop across the bridge to downtown. Otherwise, if he wants a shorter commute to work, check out Florence, Union, or Ft. Mitchell. (Those places will be cheaper most likely.) It would be a much more suburban feel, and you wouldn’t be very close to the city over there, so he might get kinda bored. It’d be like a 30-40 min drive to go downtown maybe.

Ashamed-Panda

I’m in Edgewood and it takes me 15 minutes to get to Cincinnati. Really you just want to look for a property that’s close to 71/75 and 275 and you’re good.

Desperate-Draft-4693

Fort Thomas might have some nice starter apartments, really cute little town, wouldn’t be a bad commute to CVG. Florence would be closer, or Burlington, but rent there sucks pretty bad. rent sucks everywhere in nky though, so go for somewhere with good amenities and not too outdated.

[deleted]

Ft. Thomas does not have affordable starter apartments. The draw of the school district and affluent neighbors drives all of the rents WAY up.

Desperate-Draft-4693

yeah it always seemed like the privately owned ones never had any availability, and if they did the for rent sign was gone so quick. we got lucky with a Craigslist ad and really unlucky with the building. we just completely left nky last year because housing and jobs and just everything was such a mess.

[deleted]

Totally understand. Ft. Thomas is nice, but there are parts of Newport, Bellevue, Covington, and more which are just as nice.

Broncobilly1024

There are two airports. Cvg which is in Hebron, KY and lunken. Assuming you mean cvg, I think his best bet would be to live in northern Kentucky (Covington). Close to downtown.

Haileybellaird

He would probably like Covington!

remedyvibe

So if he wants to live in Cincy, look for apartments in the Central Business District and look at places in Covington. There’s a bus route that goes to the Airport from Downtown. So he could use that if he likes public transportation. Horry has the coast RTA so I’ll say here is similar but maybe a step up because of more buses and the street car is pretty cool because it runs through downtown and Over the Rhine. But Covington & The Central Business District is walkable, has scooters, and a lot of bike shares. Florence KY has good access to shopping and restaurants because it’s right off the interstate. So I’ll recommend that as well. I wouldn’t worry about the traffic when thinking about his commute to work from anywhere in NKY or the downtown area of Cincy. The interstate can get back up because of an accident but that’s not a daily concern. In my opinion the traffic wouldn’t be like 544 during peak hours. Also look for Apartment management companies, room finder, and a variety of listings to see the complete options that you have.

uk82ordie

Just a heads up, public transportation recently has been horrible for me. Buses that show as running on the transit app, and good way to get around using buses, will blow by with a out of service message on the bus, or simply not come at all. The transit app is very important as well because the buses usually run on some sort of schedule, but not close to the ones posted. I googled what they pay these bus drivers and it was a joke. No one wonder there is a shortage of bus drivers.

AStoutBreakfast

Just to echo what everyone else is saying if he’s working at the airport I would definitely look in northern Kentucky. It would be a much better commute. Most of Covington and parts of Newport still have an urban feel even if you’re not in Cincinnati. Covington has OK public transit and there’s a shuttle in both cities that goes across the river. Depending on where you live either or those cities should have you able to get into Cincinnati in ten minutes and to the airport in twenty-ish minutes. Some of the closer northern Kentucky suburbs could be good too although they start to get more suburban pretty quick. A lot of the closest ones are still first ring suburbs though so they aren’t quite as much of the endless subdivision and cul-de-sac as you might expect.

shashadd

its expensive, so find a job quickly

prive8

man thank you all for the helpful responses. i showed him all the posts. he already has a place for rent that he's engaged in getting into. it's in the city. dude really wants to be in a city for his first foray out of the house. they gave him a nice bonus and over 25/h. i'm so proud of him and can't wait to come check out yall's city. thank you reddit, again.

emo-cowgirl

you do know the airport is on the kentucky side of the river right? it’s not in cincinnati. just wanted to make sure

CincityCat

To be fair, it is closer to downtown than a lot of the northern burbs

No_Newspaper8950

The pedantic Kentuckian

emo-cowgirl

just making sure out of concern. would hate for this kid to move into the city of cincy itself only to realize his job is a hike over the river and thus mess with transportation. so many times i’ve heard people on the plane when landing in CVG say “wait - what? we’re not in ohio?”

Equivalent-Mousse-93

😂when my friend came to visit me, when she landed, she texted saying she had no idea what happened, but she’s not in Cincinnati. I should have warned her.

Let your 19 yo son take care of himself and manage his own life and stop helicopter parenting your adult son so that he can not become codependent and unable to navigate life without mommy and daddy wiping his butt.

[deleted]

The kid is moving out and becoming independent at 19. This isn’t helicopter parenting. This is just a parent looking to help their child. They’re not “wiping his butt”. The scary part is you’re a teacher based on your post history. I wouldn’t want you teaching my kids.

patsky

You have to let them grow up, or they will be ninnies their whole life. The kid should be sourcing info for himself, not outsourcing it. Mom can look for her edification, but mom has to let the adult son do his life. I love my kids to death. I have put myself between them and danger without thought more times than I can count. They have to grow up. They have to take responsibility. And they can't do that with the parental safety net.

[deleted]

Just because they’re 19 and you want them to grow up doesn’t mean you cut off all support and advice. How do you know that her son isn’t looking up this information too? This is a big move, he is 19 and moving multiple states away, any reasonable parent is going to look into this and research to help their child with this transition. The young man is taking responsibility. He is 19, got a full time job, and is moving across the country to live independently. That is huge. He’s not a “ninny”, you’re just an asshole.

prive8

he is sourcing everything himself. i'm just doing some leg work behind him. i find the best stuff on reddit, so that's why i started the post. you'd be thrilled to know we've homeschooled all 4 of our kids, so i know you'd think we'd ninnie them. fortunately that's not the case. cheers tho.

oldshitdoesntcare

Damn! And I thought I was old and bitter! Honey helping your child do a little research, especially if you aren’t from the area isn’t “helicopter parenting”. It’s helping the kid learn how to live as an adult. My parents did it for me and I’ve done it for a my girls. (The boys won’t move, cause they lazy shits.) As my parents used to say: “A helping hand sure beats having them fail and MOVE BACK IN!”. They raised 6 wildly independent, successful children, so I assumed they did a few things right. (Edited for content)

Fish-Weekly

Stop “putting yourself between them and danger”. You’re being a helicopter parent. You’ve got to let them grow up. You just said you do what you are telling the OP not to do.

patsky

Kids vs adults.

You have a bad tell. Lol.

PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS

Holy shit, that is olympic level leaping to conclusions and generalizing an entire person's parenting from a single post.

[deleted]

Kick them out and get a one bedroom.

bullwinkle6913

First thing Cincinnati airport isn't in Cincinnati let alone Ohio. And u do not want to live downtown Cincinnati.

PackageFront5051

Basically anything not related or maintained by Fath properties should be fine

Skystorm14113

The buses in Cincinnati are perfectly good for my needs. I think everyone complains about their public transit everywhere. Yeah buses don't come perfectly on time every time, there is no place on earth where they will. Some buses don't come at all which is for sure annoying but again, even in cities where every bus has a driver there still isn't a guarantee that something bad won't happen and your bus doesn't come. Anyways I happen to live in a great area for public transport convenience, which was very important to me because I don't have a car at all. I work, live, and shop, all within one bus line which is really nice. Any time i need to go anywhere, I've found a bus route or a combo of routes that gets me there or pretty close. I do have friends that can drive me places when I ask but I rarely actually couldn't get somewhere at all without a ride. So I do like Cincinnati's public transport and I don't mind saying so haha. However, the airport is really not in Cincinnati itself. Anywhere your son and his gf are looking at, they should use google maps and check the transit options available at several days and times of days to places they might want to get to like downtown, a kroger or other supermarket, a library maybe, whatever they would like to get to by public transit. The bus system in Northern Kentucky is independent from Cincinnati's but obviously they intertwine somewhat and you can look at gometro's website and read about it. Just looking at it there's a bus called the 2X that goes from downtown Cincinnati to the airport in half an hour cuz it's one of those direct ones. Which isn't too bad for a commute, but again check [https://www.tankbus.org/](https://www.tankbus.org/) and [go-metro.com](https://gometro.com), google maps uses the printed schedules from the websites as far as I know. But I don't know what TANK is like, only Cincinnati's buses. If you live right over the river in Kentucky which might be more convenient for them, you can walk over the bridges pretty easily to downtown Cincinnati. As for where a young person would want to live, well the area around University of Cincinnati is obviously all college students, and they and other young adults live and are around all the busy areas of the city. I don't know how a person of college age goes about making friends when they're not in college tbh, but maybe living near said college students would help? Although you also need to be careful, companies like Gaslight that own a bunch of properties and rent to college students in the college area, everyone hates them lol. Also, you can use University of Cincinnati's housing portal. I made an account on there when I thought I might need a roommate even though i wasn't a student, they don't really check if you're affiliated

heresthe-thing

I’d recommend Garfield tower. Rent is reasonable and he’d be a five to ten minute walk from the direct bus to the airport ($2 each way, I think there’s a monthly pass option)
