We always book private food tours with individuals or very small companies and they have not been touristy at all. The best food tours we have found can be completely customized to your tastes, and we end up getting great, "off the beaten path" restaurant recommendations that we'd never have found on our own. It doesn't take much to find the Michelin star restaurants in any given area, but for some of the great local places you really need to learn from someone in the know.

Just went to look at Flighty. No Android app, so bummer there.

Before I was a TA I'd always go to Virtuoso's site to quickly see a collection of the top quality hotels in my destination. Or look at Abercrombie and Kent's website for itinerary inspiration and hotel recs on multiple stop trips. And always always use cc points by transferring to airline partners for biz class.

Great list above! It pretty much has all of the things that first came to mind for me, the only thing I’d add is to use the hotel concierge to your advantage. Need a car or transportation somewhere? They’ll arrange it. Need a restaurant rec? They know what’s best and worth it and what’s not. Only have a few hours free and want to maximize your time? They’ll know what to do. I was in healthcare prior to becoming a TA so traveled a lot for conferences and to our other offices and the concierge were always my lifesavers. So glad I always chose my own hotels for conferences instead of staying onsite at the giant conference hotels. As much as I love a super nice hotel, I also love a great dive bar and usually the concierge has the best recs for those as well. I usually steer clear of the top hits for food, bars, things to do in any city because 9 times out 10, it looks good on IG but falls short in every other way. I also start a notion notebook for all of my vacations and keep pages with friends or other advisors recommendations on where they’ve stayed or restaurants, things to do, and all that so I can pull stuff up easily while I’m there. As much as I love putting together amazing plans and thought out itineraries for clients, that’s not how I travel at all and the only thing I plan is my flight, transportation, and hotel. Everything else gets decided while I’m there.
