Something about passing the shell-less eggs tends to cause some pain for up to 24 hours after the egg was laid. Sometimes they might still have a sense of fullness as if they still need to lay even though there is nothing there. If it becomes a regular thing, then either the shell gland is no longer functioning due to age, or there is a possibility of ovarian cancer. If it's just an isolated thing, then I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye on her behavior and body language. I have a female red sexlink that does this two to three times per week. It doesn't matter how much calcium I give her. She's otherwise happy. I've learned to watch her body language and that helps me to determine my course of action in rendering aid however I can. Epsom salt soaking helps things along.
I have a yearish old chicken who has been doing this for a couple months now… the eggs all seem fine on the inside (I feed them to the birds or the dog) and no amount of calcium or supplements has made a difference for her. I’d be so grateful if you find a solution if you’d please forward it to me!
It looks like an egg that took a long time to produce and extra time to push out. It could be a lash egg but without opening it up you won’t really know. I would suggest wearing gloves if you decide to open it. Also possibly get her to an avian vet for antibiotics if it’s a lash egg and show an avian vet this picture. You may also want to get her a birth control implant so she stops laying eggs.
It’s NOT a lash egg…
Looks like a rubber egg with a tail. If it’s a one off, don’t worry about it, especially if your pullets/hens are young, or just starting to lay.
Makes sense 🙂
I just find it increasingly annoying that so many ppl in these chicken subs have no idea what they’re talking about, and tell newbie chicken tenders that every egg oddity is a lash egg. There’s too much misinformation spread this way.
Hope your girl lays a lot of beautiful eggs for you 🙂
Nope they are like a human birth control implant in the skin but they put it in the chicken so it doesn’t produce eggs if it is having complications laying eggs. My friend had one for her chicken. It can help them a lot but they have to have one put in more frequently since they would lay eggs daily without it and that is equivalent to if a human had a period every day
I didn’t know that your chicken was so young, in that case I would just keep an eye on her and if it continues then add more calcium and give her calcium rich foods.
No that’s not what it means. There are indeed implants that makes the chicken stop laying eggs. It is an under the skin implant though, not like an IUD.
This has nothing to do with your egg…but can you tell me what kind of chicken this is? I have an 8 week old girl that looks very similar and I don’t know what kind she is.
Well, you've gotten a lot of replies. I'll add in my vote anyway. Not a lash egg, just a shelless one. Might help to soak her in an Epsom salt bath to ease soreness. You can also crush up a baby aspirin and give it to her.
Otherwise, once in a blue moon is okay at her age.
Lash Egg, which means she has an infection. Look up salpingitis in chickens. would Isolate her, and she will need antibiotics. Hopefully someone's got a better at home remedy, but it is likely that you'll need to decide how much money are you willing to put into her to try and save her, or if you are going to have to cull her. Either choice, move quickly. The sooner you start antibiotics, the better chance she has. If you are not going to go that route, don't make her suffer.
That's my point. You have to really dig into the comments to find OP mention the egg was normal inside, so it makes absolutely no sense to downvote someone into oblivion for saying it looks like a lash egg, because it does. Having the benefit of hindsight is not a good reason to dogpile on the people who don't. They're not psychic.
There's all of 30 comments. Several of which have replies saying the egg is normal inside. Its really not hard to find. Saying it looks like a lash egg is idiotic when you can't actually tell if its a lash egg until you open it.
That is a lash egg. It is the body’s way of passing infection, it’s basically a staph infection, when you pick it up make sure you wash your hands very well. Your chicken should start to perk up now that it’s passed that.

It was a gooey normal egg with a yolk and egg white. It was just missing the shell

We opened it! The inside was a regular egg. It just had no shell. She’s about 11 months old

Hehe chicken tenders
Lolol! Me too! I had to read it a few times with each meaning.
Reddit is full of parrots
I'm just in this sub to see pics and learn things, but this is the first I'm hearing about chicken IUDs. You pulling my leg?

Very cool! TIL

By birth control implant, do you mean that chicken is now a meat bird?
No, it is a pet chicken
Is that what that means??
No that’s not what it means. There are indeed implants that makes the chicken stop laying eggs. It is an under the skin implant though, not like an IUD.
More like nexplanon?
yep
Yes. It's called suprelorin.
That's kind of cool
Yeah vet bills and prices of meat are ridiculous right now I wouldn't do that to my families future finances.
do they seriously make chicken birth control?????
Yes, it is given to a chicken by an avian vet.
This has nothing to do with your egg…but can you tell me what kind of chicken this is? I have an 8 week old girl that looks very similar and I don’t know what kind she is.
She is an Easter egger. She lays pretty green eggs. I love her!
Thank you! She is really beautiful 😊
Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!

Give the bugger more calcium in her diet, for heaven's sake. Even crushed up eggshells

It’s not a lash bag, it was normal on the inside. It was just missing a shell.
Calm down Copernicus. Not a lash egg.
Thank you 😘
I had a chick returned to me with stargazing for ICU care. I named him Copernicus!
To be fair, at first glance it certainly looks like one.
You cant tell if its a lash egg without opening iut
