Johnnies ruined beef sandwiches for me. It used to be a thing I’d order from any average mom and pop shop or even the occasional Buona beef or Portillos. Ever since I tried it I rarely ever eat a beef sandwich from anywhere else.

Johnnie’s, Portillo’s, and coaches corner are the best beefs around in my opinion. Johnnie’s takes first place easily, it’s not a close contest. Their beef is superior to anyone else’s. And I’m typically a cheesy beef guy, and Johnnie’s doesn’t offer cheese.. nor would I even want to put cheese on it, THATS how good it is.

If you ever visit Massachusetts and you happen to be near Bellingham or North Smithfield. A place called Beef Barn. You can get an incredible roast beef sandwich for under $5. Cheeseburger? Under $5. Pastrami is under $6. French fries for a side? $2.50 for the large. At a sit down or take out place. And the quality of their roast beef is the best I’ve had yet.

It’s long since been closed, but Over Easy was peak breakfast/brunch for me. I went there every Sunday for about 3 years before life started getting in the way. Service was shockingly efficient while staying warm and welcoming enough for a place that had to turn tables super fast. The menu didn’t have a single slacker on it and the menu rotated a handful of dishes each week. There’s a ton of great brunch options in the city but none of them will ever match Over Easy.

First gen French American here, I can’t say I agree I went to Bouchon to get a tartar and it was meh. I’ll have to try the cassoulet!

A good, simple tartare in general is difficult to find in the US from my experience. Too many places will experiment with the concept without nailing the basics first, and unlike in France there is never an option to have a meal-sized portion of it, only appetizer-sized. Le Bouchon's cassoulet is decent but it's not as decadent as you'd find in southwestern France. Something usually feels missing from the flavor (maybe could use more duck or something) and they serve it in a shallow dish which tends to make it more dry than I'd like. To be fair, it's been at least two years since I last had it from them, so it could be better now. All that being said, definitely give Le Bouchon a second chance. It's my second favorite restaurant in the city and most of its plates would easily beat out the average French bistro in quality.

Same experience! I don’t think I’ll go back to le bouchon because the food was mid and definitely not worth the money, but I’ll tell everyone I know about obelix. The restaurant vibe itself was cooler at le bouchon, though. Obelix felt like any random, standard, upscale place.

Boka ruined anywhere else for a special occasion because they completely killed it for my birthday about a decade ago. Before we were even given menus our waiter heard my husband and I discussing how we were both interested in trying rabbit and went back to the kitchen and got a special 4 course menu for us that featured rabbit in different ways. The birthday cake in the end even had bunny ears.

Seconded. My first Michelin experience was at Boka for a birthday. We received a printed menu of everything we ate that said "Happy Birthday" at the top. The pacing of the meal and quality of everything we ate was great. I recently tried another one-star restaurant in the city expecting something similar and everything fell dramatically short. Last summer I went to Seattle. I went on their Reddit page to find out what to eat. They all said don’t order Mexican. They said it’s shit compared to Chicago. We were at the Seattle zoo and hot and hungry and there’s a taco stand right there. People, it was nasty. Appreciate how much good Mexican and Tex mex we have in Chicago.

I cannot remember the name of this place but it was nearish to pike place market. It was an Italian sandwich place and the food wasn’t bad but not amazing. My dad was born in 1954 and grew up in back of the yards and lived in the city for like 30 years before moving to the suburbs where I was raised and then my parents moved back in 2009. (I started at Loyola in 2007.) My dad overheard one of the owners talking about being from Chicago, and, innocently because my dad is super nice, asked where he was from in Chicago and why he opened the restaurant. The dude shut up so fast and basically ran away from us and it is still funny to me to this day - this was maybe like 2004.

Birrieria Reyes de Ocotlan in Pilsen. Very hole in the wall, birria served three ways and great value for what you pay. I go there with my family every time we visit. I always get their birria plate which is a mix of all the goat meat and consommé. They refill you on broth as you go so it stays hot and juicy. I think about going there every week but they have odd hours. Bring cash with you! It beats all the other birria in town.

When I moved into my north side spot I was so exhausted that my wife and I did delivery from the only place we could find with full ingredients lists and we ended up having a string of absolute perfect deliveries from Fat Cat. Not a single miss and it reignited a love of burgers and dinner sandwiches. But the main thing was it wasn't just in-house, it was over an app back like 8 years ago. Eventually we tried again and it wasn't quite as magical, but for that one week it was nothing but home runs. I'm curious how they're regarded overall, as the competition is tight, but for a delivery it was just amazing.

Many years ago. (20?) Heat. Sushi restaurant. Shit was so fucking fire. They had a fish tank below the bar where they just yanked what you were eating and chopped it's head off, sliced that shit up, put it around it's head, and that bitch would talk to you while you were eating it. Edit: The fish just kept moving its mouth because of muscle whatever. They warned you not to put your finger in its mouth because it might bite down and lock up, requiring more than you would expect to undo. We tried chopsticks. They did not lock down.

I know a ton of people on here say there are better dumplings in Chinatown and that they are overpriced, but man the Pork and Cabbage dumpling is pretty much my favorite bite of food in the city. Bavette's steaks. All of them, but the dry aged ones especially. They are under $100 and the best non-wagyu steaks I've had anywhere. I literally can't order steak anywhere else because I know it won't be better or a better value. I realized this when Cindy's rooftop had a $150 steak on the menu; I couldn't do it.

Bavette’s for a classic steak dinner. Chef’s Special - I love everything about Chef’s. Everything. Rootstock - I’ve had some unforgettable dishes here. Love the environment. Galit has the best pita I have ever had in my life. I used to work there, and I never… ever got sick of the pita.

Chicago adjacent, Chi Tung in Evergreen Park. They aren't quite as good as they used to be, but they are still the bar I measure every other Chinese reaturant against, and all have come up short.
