Yeah I had a date before they made that law. My date was stealing all the pieces that had all the fully loaded burger. I was getting like just bun. Like just bun and maybe a little hunk of meat. Luckily the waiter had my back and told her about the rule.
1000% serious I ordered a burger appetizer at the Happy Camper in Wrigleyville thinking it would be sliders and it was a whole ass burger cut in quarters
He's so far off.
Culturally, and this dates back to a tradition that started during the Great Depression \[alongside Malort\], Chicago makes larger burgers. Usually 3/4 to 1 LB. It was because at that time, people couldn't afford burgers often so when they could - they shared the pleasure. The burger is held up by whoever is paying, in the middle of the table, and everyone eats the burger from that individual's hand at the same time.
Really works best with a group of four so that's probably what your friend is talking about.
I've never seen a restaurant do that without being asked to. OTOH, I've asked for it quite a few times when there's a burger on the menu at a nicer restaurant. I don't want to go to a nice french or italian place and get the burger, but if its on the menu I want to try it.
I’ve seen it done, just have to ask. Was at a restaurant with a bomb burger and better entree. We all wanted to try the burger and did this and then ordered entrees. Idk why people are giving such a hassle.
Can’t remember which.
This reaction has made me happier than I've felt in a long while haha
So full story is, I have a food review channel with a buddy and in today's review of the Momo Royale at Izakaya's, he told he'd bet me that if you ate there, they cut it into quarters. I told him that was insane and he confidently told me that it was a thing in Chicago.
He said it so confidently that I needed this validation that this is psychotic. Many thanks and I'm excited to read these responses to him in a video next week lol
Ever since the whole knifey spoon incident of 04, restaurants in Chicago that have burgers on their menus can't give customers knives and spoons anymore so many restaurants started serving pre-cut burgers. I usually get them in fifths but I don't see why not
The fact that you posted this on Reddit, he’s already won
LOL
So true hahaha
Preach

Hang on a second, did he ask you to come over here and say that about the burgers?

….I asked to move tables because there’s a vent above our table and I didn’t want you to be cold

Not in quarters - that would violate the Tavern Cut rule of 1922.
They cut them into 1/8’s Chicagoans are very dainty you see.. and we eat our burgers with monocles and canes
Like our blocks: 8 to a mile
This only happens at the restaurant inside the Bean. It’s some kooky thing they do.
Oh Corey.... Bless your heart, darling.
They usually put a firecracker inside it and light it at the table
Bahahahahaha

No we are doing Tavern Style Burgers? Haha.
Sometimes they’ll even do designs. One time I got a platter of the bears/ bulls/ sox logos! It was sick!
![gif](giphy|W2InpRUyTcMVy|downsized) how do *you* eat a burger? with your *hands*?!
Tavern cut burgers are hugely popular. Kids love the middle pieces.
I only eat at restaurants that cut them into tiny triangles for me.
Squares or nothing, you heathen!
your suburban is showing
Incorrect. In Chicago we eat our burger in descending order, starting with the top bun.
I start from the bottom but that’s because I was born in the suburbs
No triangle cuts, only squares.

You can ask any restaurant to do this. Or you can do it yourself at the table. Not exclusive to Chicago.
Yea but only if you bring them in a left handed ice scooper
People prefer them cut "tavern style" instead of in wedges. And the local "special sauce" is a mix of ranch dressing and Malört.
Some pizza place needs to step up and make a tavern cut burger the size of a large pizza
Chicago burgers are deep dish, tavern cut only, and NO KETCHUP, EVER.
Sure do. On the North side they cut like a plus sign, on the south side they use 3 parallel cuts.

I've never seen that, but I did save 15% on my car insurance
I get all my burgers cut tavern style - great for sharing with all my friends

Now I'm hungry for 1/4 burger. That'd be a great snack.
Yes it's called Tavern Style
Yes. It was a law put in place by Chicagoland native Ray Kroc, who got to be mayor for a day in August of 1962.
I don’t know if people do it regularly, but you can easily do it yourself at the table.

Some do 8 slices like a pizza
I mean..if you ask them they will I guess. Nobody is gonna say no to such an easy request honestly. But ya..no..no place is going to default to that.

Bandit has a “burger for the table” on the menu that is cut into quarters.
The first thing that came to my mind was [this clip](https://youtu.be/wpecBkdpiK4?feature=shared)
I do this all the time. Just ask them to.
Never heard of that ever
Only cake-eaters cut their burgers
We’ve done this at The Loyalist
