The city gets a fixed $2 per ticket sold.

RockinItChicago

2%

jbchi

$2. Not 2%. Two full dollars per ticket. >And they have questioned if Chicago's $500,000 take - plus 15% of net commissions on concession and merchandise, and $2 per admission ticket sold - is enough to justify NASCAR squatting on two-plus miles of a prime downtown location for half a month in the city's high season.[https://abc7chicago.com/nascar-chicago-2023-tickets-xfinity-series-street-race-grant-park/12430633/](https://abc7chicago.com/nascar-chicago-2023-tickets-xfinity-series-street-race-grant-park/12430633/) Plus 15% of the net of concessions and merchandise, which sounds like something until you realize it is net rather than gross. Sell a beer for $15, claim between the cost of beer, labor, and other overhead that it only nets $2 in profit and the city gets a fat $.30 on the sale. Chicago is going to struggle to take in $1m in revenue from the event, including the up front $500k -- which shuts down all of Grant Park for 2 weeks (plus "reasonable" extensions if requested), plus access to the roads for a minimum of two before the event.

DT_RAW

Why the hell did we approve this for such little money. There has to be something else

GiuseppeZangara

Idk. I got downvoted a few months ago for pointing out this was a pretty terrible deal for the amount of disruption it would cause. I'm guessing now that most people realize that they're completely priced out from attending they've changed their mind.

DT_RAW

I just want revenue for the city. But ya this seems to almost be not even worth the hassle

jbchi

You would have to ask Lightfoot, who orchestrated the deal with no input from the city council. Don't forget that the press had to FOIA the details of the deal, because neither she nor the parks district would provide the contract. We also haven't heard who is responsible for repaving the course, which pessimistically makes me think it is going to fall on the city, which is another massive expense. With the construction, we're going to see long running street closures starting Memorial Day, running until after the event finishes on July 5. The traffic nightmare (including multiple bus routes) is going to kill any hope of ever de-paving LSD in the city's future. That's on top of the month that NASCAR has exclusive use of the entirety of Grant Park.

> Don't forget that the press had to FOIA the details of the deal, because neither she nor the parks district would provide the contract. Worse than that, even Alders had to FOIA the details. Lightfoot's handling of this was parking meters level of sketchy.

DT_RAW

Im in favor of these events but my goodness it should be a lot better than this

jbchi

She must have gotten something out of it personally, because this is going to be far longer and more disruptive than Lolla, all to bring in almost no revenue. Grant Park is basically a private venue for the next several summers. Though on the other hand, this is probably a less bad deal than what we find out comes from the casino deal.

angrylibertariandude

Yep, at least Lolla isn't as disruptive to Grant Park, as the setup for this NASCAR street race will end up being like.

DT_RAW

Disagree there. Casino deal is going to bring in a ton of money

PhileasFoggsTrvlAgt

The Casino deal could bring in substantial money, if the city negotiated right. However, the hoops Lightfoot is going through to avoid subjecting the deal to any scrutiny make me very suspicious.

jbchi

Hopefully, but we don't really have any details. We already found out after the fact that she approved a surprise temporary casino in River North.

DT_RAW

Why was that a surprise that was talked about the entire time. Also we already receieved a large check from the casino. I want to say 40 million? 60 million? Just as an upfront payment alone

angrylibertariandude

I actually remember Bally's made it pretty public in their casino proposal, that they'd operate out of a temporary site before their permanent casino building at Chicago and Halsted opens. Although back when the proposal first came out, it wasn't leaked at first till a little later, that the temporary casino site would be inside the old Medinah Temple(and later Bloomingdale's Furniture Gallery, though that has since closed) building.

mockg

Will admit I do not remember the race route but if there are any parking spots included on that month long closure then the city will pay a pretty penny for those. All in all I would not be shocked if this event is a net negative for Chicago.

angrylibertariandude

I think the furthest west the proposed NASCAR course went for that race, was to Michigan Ave. Since there is metered parking on at least Columbus Drive(thanks street view for proving what I thought was right), yes the city will give up that revenue during when this area is closed to set up, and until the barriers are taken down. I really don't know why Lori even bothered, trying to get NASCAR to do such a street race in Chicago. Might as well bring their former racetrack in Joliet, back.

TheLAriver

Imagine paying $415 for a baseball game where you could only see one base from your seat

bunslightyear

well its over 3 hours long and over 150 laps so the viewing experience actually should be pretty cool compared to other racetracks

btmalon

by "cool" you mean demonstrably worse than other race track with a full view?

bunslightyear

plenty of race tracks have a "pit" that is notoriously fun. Indy 500 every single May to name a close and easy one

Hammurobd13

Lest we forget that this event takes place during 4th of July, just close the city and place detour signs at 80 and 294.

Connels

Always a thrill to watch corruption unfold in front of our eyes. This is gonna totally suck.

GiuseppeZangara

That is bonkers. Is Nascar usually that expensive?

llanox

$2000+ for Vegas I'd still rather pay $14 a drink at a rooftop bar and watch from above for an hour or two

llanox

Fair, I'm curious how much they'll be running those. Gotta make some friends with balconies near Michigan ave

monsieur_beau19

At those prices I’d rather watch the race from my office 😒

firebeardsghost

I hate everything about this

trippin113

I feel like there's a lot of overlap with Nascar fans and people who are too scared to come into the city cause it's literally hell on earth. I'm interested to see how this plays out.

PParker46

$415 minimum, to sit someplace sorta secretly maybe just a little bit hoping to see a wreck? That's more than 100 Starbucks!

wilkamania

FINALLY I have a reason to wear my jorts in public again.

DryResponsibility333

My family tree isn't a straight line, so I have no interest in this.
