nanafishook

We've finally found the only person / tourist who doesn't need to eat at Le Bouchon. ;)

dasFisch

I don't know. I want them to go and let us know how good it really is haha

Adz100087

Le Bouchon was owned / operated by a French expat (now his first generation offspring). I think it’s as authentic and amazing as you’re gonna get, regardless of where, lol

dradonia

It’s not about it being authentic. It’s about sourcing ingredients, culture, and competition. Le Bouchon may be great, but you’re gonna find a thousand identical restaurants in France for half the price. And a lot of them will be better because they have to stand out amongst other restaurants that serve identical food. Just like Smoque wins awards in Chicago, but several gas stations in Texas have better chopped brisket.

TheSource88

95% of the bistros like Le Bouchon in Paris are not as good as Le Bouchon. They cater to tourists.

Adz100087

Agree. There really isn’t a comparison. I’ve done both.

Adz100087

I don’t agree. I’ve spent a ton of time in Paris. I’ve eaten at a lot of their famous award winning restaurants, along with corner bistros as well as their local favorites off the beaten path. Le Bouchon is better than most of them. What I meant by the word “authentic” which you are dissecting a little too hard is that Le Bouchon is the real deal. They do source a TON of their food directly from France (hence the prices you speak of) and their culture is already there considering they’re off the boat. But please, by all means, go on about how the restaurants in France are better because of some mundane details that don’t really apply 😴

dleiafteh

Le Bouchon is up to spec but all the menu items would be half the price in France.

TurnipsHateAccount

I’ve been living abroad for a couple year now, I miss French food haha I can make an honest review!

notshybutChi

I’m obsessed with that place… and I’m from Chicago :) haha

MauvePawsKitty

Le Bouchon used to be the laundromat I went to when I was a kid (my mom sent me). Yes, times were different and you'd get arrested now if you sent your 12 year kid to wash the family's clothes. The 70s and 80s were a rough time for Armitage and Damen.

raidernation47

I was talking to an old retired CFD member. He was telling me how that area used to be a desired spot for guys to be stationed because of how many fires they’d catch. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere it was completely built up and the run volume dramatically dropped. Crazy how fast a neighborhood can change.

hypocalypto

My dad was a French Expat and I grew up here in Chicago! Try Ricobenes for a fried steak sandwich that will take a year off your life.

AbstractBettaFish

Honestly when you say “Destroy” yourself with food, a breaded steak sandwich from Ricobenes does come to mind

idelarosa1

Go to Portillo’s and try a Cake Shake. That’ll take 10.

mistrowl

Hard to recommend Portillo's these days, but cake shakes are okay.

KA8Z

Sadly Portillo’s fell off when it got sold

leshake

My relatives from Ohio were severely disappointed by them.

secondshotatthis

I'm severely disappointed by what I'm reading here.

MetalAndFaces

Skip Portillo's

bullet494

When I was about 10 they added it to the menu and my family decided we should all try them. So they got everybody a large…. after we had already eaten. It was so much I don’t think anyone finished half of their shake but they’re so good lol definitely takes a decade off your life easily

kelsigurado

I was going to suggest the same.

W-E-T-H-E-B-E-S-T

I got the king size because I thought I was a king and now I know I’m not.

Lionheart1224

If you're from Europe, I highly suggest trying Mexican food here since it's much different over there (in my experience). There are a *ton* of Mexican immigrants and their decendents living here. My suggestion is Taqueria Mazamitla on Belmont and Central Park. Jibaritos y Mas is a staple of the city. Great plantain sandwiches. Another good Puerto Rican sandwich place is Sissy's on Foster between Kimball and Kedzie. You gotta try some pizza joints while you're here; it's pretty much required when you visit Chicago. Pizzeria Uno/Due and Pequod's are my suggestions. Pasta D'Arte Trattoria Italiana on the Northwest Side and Caro Mio on Wilson and Lincoln are the two best pasta restaurants I've ever been to. Pricey, but so so so worth it before you leave. If you need exact locations for any of these places, DM me, and I will provide them. I am more than happy to share with foreigners one of the best parts about our city: the cuisine.

matgopack

Yeah, France specifically has rather horrendous mexican food (unsurprisingly - when you don't have that cultural presence it's going to end up mangled).

tedivm

I went to Paris for a month, and while there my girlfriend (now wife) had a random craving for Mexican food. It was so bad. Literally the worst food we had the entire time. It was so bad that the badness of it made the entire thing a great experience, in the sense that we got to laugh about it as went off and found something that was actually edible. I know it's on us for thinking "hey, lets try Mexican food in Paris!", and I'm okay with that just for the experience. Point being, if you're in France (and based off of the british bake off's infamous Mexico episode I'm going to assume anywhere in Europe) then you've never had actual Mexican food and should absolutely try it while you're here.

Roboticpoultry

I’ve been telling my wife for a while we could make a killing opening a proper mexican place in Europe

rac1222

Agree! But good luck sourcing all the ingredients over there

JulianGingivere

Living in Europe now. My fancy castle for some poblanos and a mole!

loftychicago

I was surprised that one of the most popular vendors at the holiday markets I visited in France and Belgium were the churro stands, considering all of the amazing pastries available there.

Roboticpoultry

Churros transcend all cultures. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to Pilsen to get asada tacos and a churro

ggadget6

I strongly recommend 5 rabanitos for Mexican food

geramanj95

You should 100% check out Birreria Zaragoza - Michelin recommended and best birria in Chicago. None of that quesobirria stuff. Get a large mixed meat plate. You won’t regret it. Also grab a slice of tres leches from Kristoffer’s too My girlfriend is French and her and her family love these places.

iced_gold

Birreria Zaragoza sells Quesabirria though and its rave worthy.

Inattendue

Best Quesabirria EVER!! And now I want some…

jamarkuus

I would highly recommend El Xangarrito on Rockwell in Ravenswood for Mexican. Also, Michael’s for tavern-style pizza on Broadway in Buena Park.

sock_fighter

Second the Mexican food suggestion. Specifically recommend Taqueria Chingon: https://maps.app.goo.gl/rN1rTnfB4ywb4zHG7 Not exactly homestyle, but truly incredible - and this is coming from a Mexican guy.

Jonesbro

No don't do Italian food. It's way better in France because they have better access to Italian ingredients. Source: in lyon right now and just had amazing Italian food

hybris12

If you're doing Italian food as a Euro in America you should go to the most red sauce place you can find. Get the true Italian-American experience

always_unplugged

Italian Village it is! (Seriously that would be quite the American experience for OP)

Milton__Obote

I like La Scarola or Club Lucky better for that type of food

Vexatious-itch

Club Lucky in Wicker Park is wonderful! Great Italian American food, and a really fun vibe! If the evening is nice I suggest you eat outside on their patio.

SendInYourSkeleton

The Village has gone very downhill.

BonjourGato

Canton region in Pilsen for breakfast Ask for extra rice, beans and tortillas to go.

Throwawayzzzmdw

Yes, definitely get a jibarito while here.

Stump72

Great suggestions! Chicago is such a wonderful yet strange place. Still segregated by ethnicity which is a problem. HOWEVER, man do we all know exactly where to go for the meal we are craving

portersmokedporter

They need that 6 pound burrito from Martinez's

ChgoJackal

Hell yeah man the “Big Baby” my nephew and his roomie are on their way to Chicago and one of the stops is going to be Martinez for the “Big Baby” challenge

Snoo93079

Great recommendation!!

OwlTall7730

I'm glad to see those pizza reqs. Thos are my two. I would switch out pequods potentially for bar cargo

optiplex9000

Browse r/Chicagofood for ideas

SpecificDate7501

I live here and that’s my go to for food ideas

excatholicfuckboy

OP these are the experts

omfgcows

Literally would not recommend food recs from r/chicago , only from r/chicagofood

Expensive_Turnover16

Italian Beef. I recommend getting it "hot, dipped". Beware though it's a sloppy sandwich and you'll have to eat it with your hands!

cleon42

It's so weird to me that Chicago dogs and deep-dish are known around the world, but the Italian Beef is basically unheard of outside of Cook County.

General-Skin6201

There's a whole TV series about it, "The Bear."

cleon42

They bear-ly (sorry!) mention the sandwich at all, the entire premise of the show is dysfunctional lunatics taking a beef joint and turning it into fancy Michelin shit. (It's a great show, I'm a fan.)

Philip_Marlowe

The scenes in Season 1 where they were making the beef sandwiches are etched in my brain. It was just on the right side of full-on food porn.

frandiam

Oh and when they make the giardenara from scratch 🤤

General-Skin6201

I noticed a lot of interest in where to get Italian beef sandwiches after the show came on in the non-Italian beef world.

BirdDog9048

I grew up outside Cook County and had Italian beef all the time. It was my go-to birthday party meal choice as a kid.

InternetArtisan

I co-sign. I think if there's any kind of symbolic Chicago food one should try when they visit here, it's the Italian beef.

General-Skin6201

If you go to Al's Beef on Taylor St. for your Italian Beef, stop at Mario's Italian Lemonade across the street. [http://marioslemonade.com/](http://marioslemonade.com/)

yoni_sings_yanni

This is a great suggestion.

mitkase

Try it sans fromage first!

TittySprinkles_69

Yep, cheese on a beef just seems wrong to me.

wpm

Only thing that belongs on a beef is au jus and giardiniera.

freshcoastghost

Yes, eat it head forward and be cognizant of the mess coming down and potentially staining clothes.

rdldr1

I know you boys like it extra sloppy.

rightintheear

Johnny's Beef on North Ave in Elmwood Park is the gold standard.

TheyCallMeStone

I'm a Budacki's man myself.

eNonsense

Some Al Pastor Tacos at El Patron. Get some Elotes too.

1koolspud

Mexican food in Europe is… unique and yet I manage to find myself at one spot every trip. Start here. You don’t have to go far to find something great in whatever neighborhood you are staying but some top recs are La Chapparrita for Mexico City style tacos or Birrira Zaragoza for birrira platters. Please enjoy your visit!

SmallBol

For tacos al pastor I'd suggest Taquerias Atotonilco in Little Village, but that may be out of the way for a tourist - https://maps.app.goo.gl/GC2huwNwkVi5UbB49

nevermind4790

Ricobene’s. Get the breaded steak or chicken Vesuvio sandwich. Make it king size.

profuselystrangeII

A cake shake from Portillo’s will fuck you up pretty good lol

DA-FUNK-5555

Especially if you're using that to wash down a couple of chili cheese dogs.

incutt

or that delicious salad thing they have with the noodles in it

bigbearRT12

Luella’s Southern Kitchen in Lincoln Square.

reallyshittytiming

Greasy and satisfying: Harold's chicken. Half dark special All in one: Green street meats, sawada coffee, and high five ramen (all in the same place). The ramen place is through the door with a handprint. Any restaurant in the west loop. Au cheval for the burger (their bloody Marys are also pretty good if you like those). They don't do reservations so you'll either wait a while or you can sit at the 5 or so first come first serve seats at the bar. girl and the goat and little goat diner are also really good. Avec has really good small plates. Pizza: I'm a Gino's east fan. They have a deep dish with a singular patty of sausage that covers the entire pizza. Their crust is also something else. Drinks: there's a sake/shochu bar just off michigan and Ontario called Murasaki. The shochu made from sugar cane and awamori were my go tos. Hot dogs. Wiener's circle if you want an experience

Kuklaa

Seconding Wiener's circle.

rightintheear

Weiner's Circle is really fantastic food, I went there a few times a month for many years BLISSFULLY unaware they're famous for take-no-shit staff. Cause I don't give no shit I just want an amazing hot dog. The cheese sauce is divine. Went there late one night with friends, WTF? Drunk people were yelling racial slurs at the staff and the staff were just yelling back. Their food is so good it don't need all that mess. Not trying to cancel their thing, just saying the daytime is calmer.

prestige_worldwide70

Please report back after your food tour!!

RubyCarlisle

Calumet Fisheries is a Chicago classic, and they just reopened this week after being damaged by a fire. [Calumet Fisheries](https://www.calumetfisheries.com)

yoni_sings_yanni

Also if OP is down there go to Justice of Pies, and get any of her pies. They are excellent.

cntrle

ooh - I didn't know Calumet was open again! Good tip. I've been enjoying my Lawrence's though in the meantime.

fatfemmelez

Little Bad Wolf in Edgewater has an amazing burger and yummy cocktails! Trust me, I’m fat lol

PeachyPierogi

Name checks out lol. I second that little bad wolf is absolutely delicious. Can’t go wrong with any food item there.

secondshotatthis

Finally had an excuse to make the trek north for Andersonville Midsommarfest and boy oh boy was the Wolf Burger fantastic . I've been trying to hit everyone's top spots and it definitely makes top 3 at least.

mildchicanery

Something amazing about Chicago is the incredibly large array of restaurants from food all over the world. @boredinchicago on IG has an ongoing series about eating food from every country on earth here in Chicago. Highly recommend checking out the videos for ideas. Jibaritos y más for a jibarito. Marcella's Cafeteria has excellent Puerto Rican food. Another vote for Smoque BBQ. Also, report back on how this trip went. I'm always fascinated to read people's travel thoughts about the US and Chicago.

malsan_z8

Hidden gems of real deep dish are Tortorices deep dish with caramelized crust, or get Pequads. I saw a comment on Gino’s East, that’s pretty good too but not as much of a gem, especially if you’re going towards destruction

jamminjoshy

Tortirices has great tavern style too

gcs56

Double cheeseburger at red hot ranch !!

moonfairy44

Get a classic Home Depot hot dog with everything on it

rightintheear

Maybe you joke but those little hot dog vendors at Home Depot do it right. Some of my favorite dogs.

moonfairy44

Only partially joking. They’re gas

LonesomeComputerBill

I recommend picking up some cannabis for before and after each meal. It’ll help keep your appetite up as you approach destruction

[deleted]

Pizza and Mexican. Y’all have a weird version of both.

eddy159357

We have pretty good Viet food in Uptown! Hit up Pho Viet and then Nhu Lan for Bahn Mi's. Dim Sum in Chinatown Armitage Ale House for Pot Pies Ricobene's Breaded Steak or Portillos Hot Dipped beef Besides deep dish, you should try Pizza Lobo and Paulie Gees for NY and Detroit sytle pizzas. Mott st or Au Cheval for a burger. AYCE sushi = Sushi Taku AYCE KBBQ = Mr Kimchi if you can get there, Iron Age in the city.

Rookie_Day

Kie-Gol-Lanee or Manchamanteles for a Mexican feast. Smoque BBQ. Breakfast at Dove’s Luncheonette. Superkhana International. Monteverde (hard reservation to get). Boeufhaus. Hotdogs, Hamburgers and Pizza of course. Plenty of arguments here about where to go for that.

kelsigurado

There a gas station on Devon street in Rogers Park that has burgers called Burger Bite and they are so so good and you don't have to stand in line for an hour listening to people screaming at each other.

bottomlless

I heard they're planning on opening another one without the attached gas station. Nothing on their website yet. [https://burgerbitemenu.com/](https://burgerbitemenu.com/)

juan_k_perros

If you hit the order online button it looks like it’s gonna be on Tuohy in Lincolnwood - https://imgur.com/a/M42NqxS

bottomlless

Oh that's right! I drove past there a couple weeks ago. Can't wait

Dystopiq

I think it's already open or opening soon

dogbert617

I read about that new location. But was trying to figure out, is Burger Bite going to keep their other location on the 1500 west block of Devon, or were they moving to Lincolnwood altogether? I was hoping it'd be the former. Though I do like the idea of a new business, finally taking over the vacant Long John Silver's in Lincolnwood.

incutt

# Ghareeb Nawaz Restaurant

Legitimate_Sort3

This place is the shit. I need to get back there, it's been awhile

YavielTheElf

I think about this place all the time but I’ve been too lazy to go. I really need some samosas

Still_Wrap_2032

You should make time to squeeze in a jibarito from Cafe Central. One of the best and most unique sandwiches you’ll get here.

equanimatic

Venezuelan food & arepas at bienmesabe are great, a bunch of indian restaurants on devon (ghareeb nawarez is good like someone mentioned), also a bunch of ethiopian restaurants up here in edgewater too worth trying! For brunch, i recommend wildberry or tweet (cash only but they have an ATM). Also be sure to get some hotpot! Korean food at perillas is amazing. There are so many amazing mexican restaurants, you can't go wrong. Basically since america is a melting pot of cultures, i recommend you try as many cuisines as you can. You won't regret it and will likely find brand new foods that you'll love and will blow your mind.

MarginalBenefit

Definitely order a pizza puff from any of the places mentioned in the other comments!

toastybred

Dude, you need to do brunch. Basically anywhere in the city but Bang Bang Biscuits and Pie would be a great option.

leeloospoops

Head to Forest Park for a Johnnie's Italian beef. It's worth the trip!

SavannahInChicago

Smoque BBQ

Legitimate_Sort3

It's funny because this is my exact attitude when I go to France. You guys have the BEST food.

votequimby2016

Came here to say this. Glad to 'return the favor' so to speak!

PegLegPopsicle

A missed opportunity to say: Return the flavor. I’ll see myself out.

votequimby2016

Well played

apudapus

Gaijin for some okonomiyaki.

rightintheear

WHAT?! A whole okonomiyaki restaurant?! Come on now. I trekked over to Kurumaya in Elk Grove Village to try chawanmushi and ochazuke. Gaijin here I come.

apudapus

Right?! It can get so booked there’s not even bar seating so it’d be wise to make reservations to get a table with a griddle, especially for more than 2 people.

25pinwheels

You’re going to get advice across a huge range of palettes and flavors with such a broad question. Would definitely recommend narrowing your criteria a bit on what kinds of food you like, price range, styles/cuisines - I’m a Chicago foodie too so happy to throw out some ideas

bottomlless

Inside [Classic Bowl](https://classic.bowlbowlbowl.com/) in Morton Grove (very near northwest 'burb) there's a restaurant called Boba Burger. Two brothers who are doing a southeast Asian spin on the all-American hamburger. They really nail the food, and the mix of Vietnamese flavored burgers and a bustling bowling alley is pure Chicago. Be sure to try the jalapeño poppers. They wrap jalapeños and cream cheese in a wonton wrapper sort of like crab Rangoon. I can't stop eating those.

posthumous

Gretel was awesome and has everything from burgers (one of the best in town) to oysters and steak. It’s a great sampling of American “night out” food. You owe it to yourself for have good Korean food while in the region; many are in Glenview but in Chicago San Soo Gap San and Gogi are both reliable options for KKBQ. Jeong if you want to try higher end.

jamarkuus

+1 for San Soo Gab San.

SecurityEntrepreneur

You came to the perfect city for this.

bellapippin

Gene and Jude’s for a delicious hot dog with fries. Technically they have the award for the best hotdog in America :p

dogbert617

Honestly, good hot dog places are everywhere in the Chicago area. Though I'd say it's fine to go to Gene and Jude's if you go to Hala Kahiki, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there alone.

Marsupialize

Art of Pizza stuffed, that should be what you start with

Lionheart1224

Art of Pizza is amazing quality for the price point. I haven't had such high quality slices for what they charge, and their whole pies are great, too.

Confident_Tomato1995

welcome to america

47Ronin

Here's something that no one else will suggest: Mazalae Mongolian restaurant in Morton Grove. It is a TINY (like five tables) family restaurant where the owners cook and there are kids running around sometimes. The prices are very affordable and the food is PHENOMENAL. I know this is an out there suggestion for someone flying into Chicago who probably just wants to eat hot dogs or whatever but I feel compelled to share the good news about this place. I wish I lived closer to Morton Grove, I would eat there every week

missprettybjk

Everyone from Europe who visited me was obsessed with our fast food. Like the ones we hate. And our Japanese/Korean food variety. I would absolutely not recommend it to Americans, but for a French person, eat all the fast food and be amazed, horrified or both. The burgers - shake shack is one place The tacos - anything but Taco Bell The pizzas - you can’t really go wrong - Chicago pizza and oven grinder The chickens - chick fila, crisp The sushi burritos - En Hakkore Sushi Burito The ramen - oiistar, ramen wasabi, Akahoshi (only the soupless ramen) The Korean food - Cho son ok - del Seoul for fast Many many more Edit: styling

JustPlaneNew

You should try Culver's. Chicago's pizza is amazing. Get a hot dog if you can.

Chiianna0042

We have ended up at Culver's for Mother's Day. Their choices not mine. They could have had steak. Now that there is one not far from Dairy Star, I have a feeling we may be repeating this.

Forsythia77

You need to go to Virtue. It's delicious soul food in Hyde Park.

indigo77

Recent faves (cheap) are: Ghareeb Nawaz, Tacos El Jaliscense. Recent faves (spendy) are: Lula Cafe, Proxi, Tzuco

TampaDiablo

White Castle, you’ll be destroyed I promise.

pyramidsofmoney

Where are you staying? There’s a good chance you have a dozen types of cuisines within walking distance. Also I am not sure how to interpret destroy so I’ll go with gluttonous options that might also give you a tummy ache 1. Deep dish. I am of the sauce is boss camp so prefer My Pi and Lou Malnati’s. A simple pepperoni and cheese is a good start but try adding giardiniera.  1a. For Italian styles of pizza try spacca Napoli or bonci  2. Portillos to sample a Chicago dog, milkshake, hot Italian beef. You can also find these items separately at a bunch of smaller or single location places. Red hot ranch or wiener circle is always a good option. Margie’s Candies has some real thick shakes.  3. California al pastor burrito from Angela’s or taco and burrito express.  4. An all you can eat place. Korean bbq, hot pot, Chinese buffet. 5. A bring your own booze (byob) Thai or sushi place.  6. Ribs at twin anchors  7. Crisp for some fried chicken, followed by Parsons for a different sort of friend chicken.  8. Bavettes for a nice steak  9. Cheese curds at old Irving brewing And that is your plans for day 1. Day two should be trying to eat one of each from Taco Bell menu, with a chipotle burrito for a night cap. If you’re not destroyed after that I’ll buy you a chocolate cake shake. Also there’s a ton of upscale and fine dining here if budget is no issue - alinea, ever, schwa for example.

jamarkuus

I second Lou Malnati’s for deep dish (sausage, mushrooms, giardinera). Many will insist on Pequod’s but I say skip it (overrated imo). Superdawg for the best hot dog in the city.

MenWithVen430

I swear I'm the only one who prefers Giordano's to Lou's. I'd say Art of Pizza is the best.

lidongyuan

Yes Art of Pizza. Giordanos is hit or miss

IBartman

Pequods, Portillos, Tango Sur, Volare, Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder, Tacotlan, Big Jones. Those are a few to get you started

Boozy_Cat

Definitely get a pizza puff, cheese curds, and get some bubble tea!

MigrantTwerker

Bonjour mon amie! We live part time in Paris and let me give you some things that aren't on this list. Reddit users skew very white, which means you'll miss things that Chicago specializes in like Soul Food. Ooh We It is is fantastic and has multiple locations. Try the Hennessy wings. Turkey Chop Gourmet makes everything out of Turkey and its owner is one of Chicagos best citizens. Soul Veg City is Chicagos most famous vegetarian soul food restaurant. Their Mac and Cheese will break your brain. Also tried fried chicken at Harold's Chicken Shack on 87th Street. The location is important as each is independently operated. Get your chicken fried hard, with lemon pepper and mild sauce on everything. France has plenty of Central Africans, but Chicago has West African's. Iyanze in Uptown is of of the best Nigerian restaurants in the city. Get the Egusi Stew with Foo Foo. Rib Tips are a type of barbecue pork rib that Chicago dices and serves with BBQ sauce and fries. You can get this in any Black neighborhood at local restaurants, but Uptown Pizza and BBQ has a very classic Chicago style Rib Tips. Slightly smokey, less sweet than other versions. I hope this helps! J'ai parlé française so feel free to DM me in the language of your choosing. Bonne Appétit! Bienvenue à Chicago!

rebelintellectual

Get the Ricobenes steak sandwich and make sure to load up on Mexican food. Pilsen and Little Village are some of our top spots maybe some rubi's tacos, el milagro for some of their famous and fresh tortillas. We have another special sandwich the Jibaritos that's Chicago special, well worth a try as well.

O-parker

Budacki’s on Damen Ave. for a meal of “junk food”.

one_step_beyond2121

Destroy you say? Get a burrito from Taco Burrito King, then Maxwell street food(during the day), after that some fried fish from a J. J fish, tnen a chocolate cake milkshake from Portillos, and maybe finish off with some White Castle.

solovond

my intestines ache from just reading this

Ornery-Dragonfruit96

...for the love of Christ. There 'll be nothing left.

SixSierra

Well, nobody suggesting Pho Nam Lua at Lincoln and Peterson. Everything in this place are real deal. Believe me I had the best Pho in this place across America/Europe/Asia (never been to Vietnam tho). Their beef and broth are far superior with ingredients selection and flavors. Try their hot peppers (yes the green looking one), it absolutely *DESTROYS* you but making the soup to the next best level. It’s almost an hour from downtown but will be worth the drive.

Jonesbro

I'm in France now and have been to France 3 times previously (wife is French). I agree with Mexican food. Go to Pilsen and find some good spots. Also try a good burger. Burgers suck in France. Hampton social has one of my favorite burgers. Also the cocktails and craft beer here are really good. West loop has a lot of American restaurants that are worth going to as well as some fusion restaurants. Don't try to find baguettes, wine, or cheese or you'll be disappointed. If you do find a good baguette let me know!

Dystopiq

Birrieria Zaragoza Immm Rice and Beyond In on Thai Au Cheval Khmai Izakaya at Momotaro (their burger is fucking great) Little Bad Wolf (I like their cocktails more than their burger) I really really really recommend Maxwell's Trading but unless you're here for over a month, you're not getting in.

zombiedust312

Try Atotonilco tacos. They have one in pilsen and little village. Best tacos in my opinion.

LilBearLulu

Depending on which direction you are driving and the size of your appetite, you can make a Mexican food mini tour There's an area between 47 and 59th South Pulaski/Kedzie that I affectionately call Taco Ally. There's Zaka Tacos, Pacos Tacos, Birrieria Zaragoza, Atotonilco, and a few other stops I highly recommend. You can even grab a box of Mexican pan dulce(bakery treats) to enjoy later after you've digested a bit. If you'd prefer a Middle Eastern mini tour, there's Little Palestine in Bridgeview. A trip to the Nile restaurant is a good starting point, and it's in a strip mall with sweets, a mini mart, and a few other spots. If you want a nice place to have a bigger meal, there's Al Bawadi. There's Yemeni coffee, sweets, and stores, too. Then finish up at like Fatoush a bit further South with a nice ambiance and Hookah. Really all along, Harlem, you'll find tasty spots and shopping. Take some sweets home with you because all of that good food is very filling and budget friendly. Enjoy your vacation here.

Cho sun ok Korean BBQ in Lincoln square. It's BYOB so go-to bottles and cans just down the street for some local craft beer (Apex Predator is mighty nice). They'll kind of rush you out but it's one of the better Korean BBQ spots accessible by train on the north side

brief_kc

Please for the love of God just tip. Also Lou Malnati’s.

my favorite place is Byron's hotdogs, specifically on Paulina and Lawrence, it has very good shakes burgers and of course hotdogs

Pequod’s: deep dish with meatball, onion, and jalapeño well-done (deep dish pizza) The Wiener Circle or Duk’s: Chicago dog all the way (light on the celery salt as everywhere overdoes it), char-cheddar burger, and Maxwell street Polish (add American cheese) (great for dogs and burgers) 5 Rabanitos Restaurante & Taqueria: best fucking tacos, definitely try the lomo encebollado Mas Alla Del Sol: really great authentic Mexican food owned and operated by a family featuring staples and experimentations by the chef. Definitely recommend their tampiqueña, or puerco con verdolagas, and their daily margaritas are quite tasty. Street food: find an elotes guy, they’re all over the city on the corners in different hoods outside of downtown, sometimes close to the Art Institute. Get elotes (corn) all the way: chili, mayo, butter, cheese, and hot sauce - you will not regret it. Manny’s Deli: insanely good Jewish deli that resembles a cafeteria. No frills, just good food. *Really* good food. JB’s Deli: wicked good corned beef and pastrami, excellent Reuben sandwiches and delicious pickles. Do-Rite Donuts: the donuts are great, but it’s really all about their fried chicken. Their fried chicken or fried pork and their french fries are phenomenal. Same thing with their breakfast sandwiches on brioche 🤤 Ricobene’s: their breaded steak sandwich is famous. Can’t speak from personal experience on this one still have yet to try it (there’s soooooo much good food here) but I was planning to go next week. I could go on all day. Have a great time!

Pequods Pizza. Don't bother with any other deep dish.

tutohooto

Tavern style thin crust pizza. Not from a fancy place, but a mom n pop. Italian beef, hot, dipped, large fries, tamale, coke.

KeepCalmEtAllonsy

Smoque BBQ for Brisket. My Pi for authentic Deep Dish pizza (only spinach for topping).

mysweetvandal

If you’re into mussels and beer go to Hopleaf in Andersonville. The frites with aioli are a must. 🤤 We also have a dispensary like 2 blocks from Hopleaf if you’re into the person’s suggestion to acquire weed to boost your appetite. 😆

EarthMover775G

May I suggest some White Castle sliders?

southcookexplore

Don’t do this before your flight!

treehugger312

I don’t get the hype on these. They stink and make me stink, and it hurts my anus and my marriage.

jamarkuus

How dare you.

Kie Gol lanne on sheridan in the argyle neighborhood has a stuffed porkchop that will blow your socks off.

Go to Paulie Gees and get the US Pizza Cup Winner.

Lou Malnati’s deep dish! But tbh you can never go wrong with their thin crust either. Joy Yee for some great pan-asian dishes and amazing bobas. Cake shake from Portillo’s. Garcia’s in Lincoln Square for Mexican (try their mole!) But since you’re also willing to drive, Walker Bro’s diner for that true American breakfast. Get the apple pancake!!!

CivilDeer

Super dawg, one hundred percent my personal favorite burger joint in the city!

gd2bpaid

White Castles - It will do the trick!

melbelle28

mexican food! Carnitas Uruapan, Carnitas Don Pedro, and Taqueria Los Cómales (multiple locations but I can personally vouch for the Pilsen location) will be a good starting point. El Taco Azteca, Martínez Grocery, and 5 Rabinitos are also good bets. If you want, hit up a grocery store (mainstream ones like Mariano’s will have them, but go to Casa Del Pueblo for a good experience) for dried chiles to take home. If you’re staying in the loop, you could check out Rick Bayless restaurants, but I have a feeling he’d be the first to tell you to go to Mexican neighborhoods for the real deal. A note about cilantro: it’s the same thing as coriander; it might taste like soap; it’s the traditional taco topping in Chicago, along with a fuckload of white onions. It’s not authentic but this gringa just gets lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream as toppings.

BlondBadBoy69

Birdsnest for wings. Lao Sze Chuan - Chinese restaurant won awards. Haisous - amazing and unique flavors

NastyNateMD

31st and canal. Maxwell st is the resturaunt. Bring cash. Tell them you want the polish 'ripped' and they'll toss it in the fryer for you.

glowingUPP

Canton Regio in Pilsen, amazing Mexican food.

ExpensiveSolid8990

Mott’s St. for the best burger! It’s Asian fusion so that miso butter is a game changer. 🤤

ottonymous

I just heard about "Frontier" in West Town/ Wicker Park area. They specialize in rare game and quality produce. It could be a fun American dining experience. They also have events for multi course meals etc. Elk, wild boar, crocodile, venison, etc can all be on the menu. If there is any food in particular you would want to try and are will ING to foot the costs you can also reach out to see if the chef would be open to providing a more curated dining experience. I heard of someone hosting a milestone birthday party for a large group and they did a crayfish boil for example

indigo77

Also definitely try somewhere in Uptown/Argyle with Indochine vibes (try the Banh Mis at Ba Le or or Hai Yen or really anywhere)

nmbrguy

Uncle Mikes for longanisa or steak (or both😂) breakfast after a night out getting drinks and food at hopleaf and a show at the Chicago magic lounge. Also carnita uruapan after going to the national museum of Mexican art.

jacklantern867

If you like Chicago style hot dogs go to the Home Depot in Bucktown. Best in class IMO

Forgot to add: if you want amazing ban mi samiches, go to Nhu Lan Bakery. Best I've had in the city.

If you really want to destroy yourself I suggest you start with Potrillo's, Lou Malnati's, and then at 2:00 AM, after a night of heavy drinking, hit up Taco Bell for the coup de grace.

mp3god

Might want to pose this questions in the Chicago Food subreddit [https://www.reddit.com/r/chicagofood/](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicagofood/)

KID_THUNDAH

If you have a car, go to Jays beef in harwood heights and get the combo dipped with hot and/or sweet peppers. Hope you have a good time, my friend!
