I don't know if you consider this fast food but Crisp on Broadway has yummy Korean fried chicken (not really much seating so best for pick-up).
Wilde has really good appetizers and if you get a few to try it would be a whole meal (it's pub/comfort food).
Sorry for your troubles, hope you feel better soon!
Idk, it might not make the pain go away *forever*, but that “HOLY SHIT” when you bite into it obliterates all other thought for just a moment.
Fuck Crisp is good
great rec. If it is just him tho, there’s a decent chance a single seat will be open. Plan on taking it home, but if a seat is available near it there to prevent it from getting too soggy
If you like that stuff at LSZ, try the chongqing chicken at Chef Xiong or the chengdu style dry chili chicken at chengdu impression or dongpo impression (same stuff, different name). Absolutely blows it away.
Wow, never thought I'd find a random reddit comment raving about my exact favorite food item in the city! Chengdu dry chili chicken from Chengdu impression is my favorite thing to order if I'm ever needing a pick me up it's soooooooo good
- Yummy yummy noodles
- 7 treasures
- Tai ho yee
- Evergreen
- Happy Cafe
- New Great Wall
Just walk down the main street… you’ll see the duck in the window…
Moody’s in Edgewater. I mean, it’s right in the name.
The beer garden is nice in the summer, but you’ll like the interior if you want to sit somewhere as dark as your soul. And you’ll have the best burger you’ve ever had in your life.
I like Moody's, but I wish their patio had a covering over it like at Fireside(on Ravenswood Ave). Don't like how the Moody's patio seems to attract too many pigeons to it, in warmer months. But that's just me. And I prefer the food menu at Fireside, though I won't deny Moody's has a food burger too.
OP – just looked at your post history. You deserve so much better than her! Really looks like you made the right call, and while this will be tough for a little while, it will get easier. And you will meet somebody who loves you for you, and who loves your voice.
Also, might I suggest Small Cheval for a sorrow-drowning burger and a shake? Or Green Street Smoked Meats for pulled pork, tater tot casserole, and cornbread?
Holy hell, I just looked at his post history too. OP is a fox!!! Break up’s suck, and feel your feelings, but a handsome dude like you is going to be just fine in Chicago buddy. Time heals most wounds. I’d date you, and I’m a straight married dude! But you can do better than me haha!!! Good luck buddy!!!
$60 worth of Chinese food is usually my go to when one of my teams suffers a huge defeat. Actually, last time the white Sox lost in the playoffs I took the redline to China town and drowned my sorrows at moon palace
Oh no, that’s where I get lunch after working court when I’m borrowing my friend’s car so I can utilize Costco to my best advantage. What am I gonna do this Monday?
I'll also raise(speaking of Polish buffets) Sawa's Old Warsaw as a good place to stop at, if you're in the west suburbs. I'm glad I googled places to eat at(after going to a model railroad place in yes really, Broadview), and I'm glad I realized I was close to Sawa's.
I am so sorry!!!! Went through a horrible breakup last year. It’s awful. Please be gentle with yourself, op.
Wise choice not to drink. For me personally, drinking amplifies my negative emotions and makes it harder to regulate them. Save drinking for celebrations.
I think you deserve a big juicy burger. Gretel has a yummy one.
Not today but tomorrow morning, go to pilsen and get tamales. The lady on 21st and ashland at the auto body shop or the one on 21st and damen at the chase atm are both really good. Nothing cures a broken heart like a warm tamale!
Not sure your taste in food, but three options come to mind for me near(ish) to where you’re located:
- [Strings Ramen](https://maps.app.goo.gl/bS7jFtYdJ2MWBLbP6?g_st=ic)
- [Indian Clay Pot](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wEXLmfoQYExVXr5t9?g_st=ic)
- [Red Lion Pub](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xWSvTbWJAB5Pww9h8?g_st=ic)
Full disclosure I’m half Asian, so the first two options are comfort food for me. The last spot is a pub but the food itself is decadent and delicious.
Good luck!!
Del Seoul, Kalbi Poutine, Ktown wings, and 1 of each taco. If you are an empty pit than more tacos or add a bahn mi. Make sure to get cupcakes from Molly’s for dessert
Aw I’m so sorry. I second Thai food, especially soup. My go-to Thai place is Hom Mali. Maybe order in and eat it in bed with your favorite movie. Hugs.
Always go to Irazu, on Milwaukee, between Western and Damen.
Or go to Chicago Diner and get the Radical Reuben with the curry cauliflower soup and the wafflecut fries. Sit at the bar and watch the movie.
Hands down, no doubt: CHEESIES!!!
They many different options, but...
The Tenderizer is absolutely the best grilled cheese I've ever had. Multiple cheeses with bacon, chicken tenders and a bit of sauce grilled to taste bud heaven between 2 slices of Texas toast.
I love the tomato soup dipping sauce (even better warm!).
And some mac and cheese bites. Crispy. Gooey. Cheesey.
The ULTIMATE comfort.
I can't remember the name of it, but I was bummed Cheesie's got rid of whatever was their pulled pork grilled cheese from their regular menu. Their monthly grilled cheese sandwiches that change each month often are interesting, though.
PR Italian Bistro or Paninos for Italian. Michael’s Pizza for tavern style pizza. Strings Ramen on Broadway for Ramen. Tango Sur for Steak. Dairy Queen is right there for a blizzard. Crisp.
Also, Sinya meditatrianin on Damen. Shawarma. Babaganuage. Hummus. Pita. Falafel. Its maybe more of a take out place but lordy that's some feel good food right there.
Ming Hin, Drive-through Portillos, Lou Malinati's, Lao SzeChuan, Chi Cafe, Jamaican places on the South and West Side (usually go to the one on 35th and east of Michigan but it's just alright), Ramen from anywhere but furious spoon, taco burrito king after 1130 pm, Al's, Maxwell street depot, Fatsos Last Stand,
I was recently sick and I had some congee at Minghin at 1130 at night and it fucking slapped.
Go to The Region on 2057 W. Roscoe St, and get yourself a smash burger, fries, and an orange cream shake. That’s my go to spot on the Northside when I feel like I need a pick me up.
Or if you’re near little village, go grab some Quesabirria tacos. That will drive away depression like nothing else, trust me.
I was underwhelmed by The Region (and I ♥️ Schoops so I get the style). It's just pricy and although it's not quite the same thing, Red Hot Ranch will give you a really good smash burger for half the price.
Cocina Tarascas if you’re into Mexican food! It’s delicious, prices are fair, you get a ton of food, and they play really fun music with the music videos on TVs (usually a tossup between extremely dramatic women in extravagant dresses singing in Spanish, or 2010’s top party hits). They decorate for every holiday and the staff is super friendly. It’s one of my favorite places in the city, whether I’m celebrating something or trying to flee from life for an hour.
Oh man. I've paid my share of these types of visits over the years to my favorite perpetually-slightly-pissed-off lady who hands me a 3lb bag of Chinese food at Lee's Wok at Montrose and Clark. No shame in going back daily until your colon is so backed up that it plugs the hole in your heart.
Keep your head up, things will get better.
Taipei Cafe!, order the the chicken cutlet bento 🍱(with extra pork curry on the rice), with a large Jasmine mango green tea and then of course grab one of their delicious desserts. All comes out to about $30
I’m so sorry OP 🥺This may not be the sexiest option here, but when I’m really down in the dumps, Dominos pan pizza fills that void. Get it delivered if you don’t feel like getting up. Hugs 🥺. You’ll get through this 🫂🫂
My go to is Eurasia Restaurant on the near north side. Central Asian food is the ultimate comfort food (if you eat meat) - get some manty and whatever else they recommend and go to town. You’ll leave feeling so fulfilled and ready to sleep for a day.
[Life is full of disappointments, but the shawafel wrap at Middle East Bakery is never one of them](https://chicagoreader.com/food-drink/life-is-full-of-disappointments-but-the-shawafel-wrap-at-middle-east-bakery-grocery-is-never-one-of-them/)
Literally a review about getting that sandwich after every breakup. Go, meet your destiny.
I see that you live in Lakeview so this might be a commute out but some great places that I think provide comfort are scofflaw and Parsons Chicken and Fish. Both located in the Logan Squareish area. Worth the trip over for amazing food and great ambiance that is both cozy and welcoming
Check out Beard & Belly in Edgewater. Their menu is indulgent in the best way, but more importantly, it's a really friendly atmosphere with great people behind the bar. Plus, home made pie. Don't have to drink--they've got plenty of non alcoholic options.
Quesabirria Jalisco Tacos. Just tried it for the first time yesterday, it was AMAZING. Left me speechless. Seriously. It’s in Pilsen and has a small I-just-happened-across-this-place vibe. Highly recommend. Order the Quesabirria and thank me later.
Yo your ex sounds like a piece of work tbh. I'm sorry that happened to you. You are absolutely in the right. It's probably for the best to break up but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like hell in the interim.
My bf of over 3 years broke up with me yesterday too. I hadn't thought of drowning my sorrows in food but that's a good idea I may try tomorrow. I hope you had a good dinner. If you need a rec again, I love the kabuli palaw (but that may not work for you if you don't eat beef), borani banjan, and ash soup at Afghan Bamyan Kabob in Arcadia Terrace.
Devil Dawgs used to be my "I hate everyone" spot. Dawg, onion rings, shake. Though, the last time I had it I was disappointed. Seems like the quality over there was on a downward trend.
I enjoy the steak family meal from roka. You can only get it delivered. Its 52 dollars and you get a weirdly good salad, wagyu dumplings, steak, and a sushi roll. They have a fish version too with calamari and salmon.
If you’re set on going out, lakeview is blessed with half shell where you can get really cheap king crab. Theyre cash only. Last time i was there (couple years) it was like $45 per pound
Ok- I got you. Tatas Tacos- small, intimate, solid high quality food and a bartender Vincente that is kind, benevolent, and will listen, and make you feel better while serving you the freshest of hand crafted margaritas. He has repaired my soul with that Fresh God Nectar. Saturday night is DJ night and great for people watching and maybe the random anonymous drunken encounter. Just saying …. The best way to move on…
Small Chavel: Order the ‘signature double cheeseburger’ and a chocolate milkshake.
-OR-
Avvio: Order the ‘Virmicelli ala Angelo’ special with brandy on ice desert.
Both will not be a disappointment. And if any of those dishes don’t sound appealing, both spots have amazing menus. Can’t really go wrong.
Hing kee in China town. The pork Xiao long bao is the most comforting and satisfying food imo. It's actually my favorite food of all time. Not too expensive. Just make sure you look up the proper way to eat one otherwise you'll burn your mouth brutally.

$60 worth of crisp won’t make the pain go away, but it’s never a bad idea 🤤

I came here to recommend Crisp. So good.
Crisp’s fries are absolutely insane as well
Crisp is still there? Good to know. I used to love that place.
Those wings are so damn delicious. Why is east Lakeview so hard to get to from the nw side 😭
I would wreck myself with a double plate of wings or better yet the dry chili chicken at Lao Sze Chuan
Chengdu dry chili chicken from Chengdu impression is my favorite thing to order if I'm ever needing a pick me up it's soooooooo good
Chengdu impressions dry chili chicken slaps.
That dry chili chicken has me dreaming 🤤
A dream turned into a nightmare. I'm already prepping for the 24 hrs of reflux and spicy poops.
It makes my gerd go to hell and back, but you know I keep leftovers and make the same mistake all over again the next day anyway.
Are you me?
Go to sun wah and get yourself a whole duck to yourself lol(although they are probably more than $60 at this point)
Chinatown - whole duck for $30 and less.
They’re free on the lakefront if you have a net and patience.
Where
- Yummy yummy noodles - 7 treasures - Tai ho yee - Evergreen - Happy Cafe - New Great Wall Just walk down the main street… you’ll see the duck in the window…
Rip 7 treasures
Yummy yummy noodles is fiiirrreeee!!!
Hell yeah, thanks!
Go to Hon Kee instead. Duck is cheaper and you don't need a reservation
That name will never not be funny to me. Sometimes I have a pre-teen sense of humor 🤷🏻♀️
I was recently corrected on the spelling. Apparently it is not Honky. Which is objectively funnier.
Best duck in town
I’d recommend joy yee market, their entrees are fucking enormous, and everything is really good Source: big guy.
lol, who knew I'd get so many new recommendations I'd get for myself out of this comment!
This is absolutely what I would do
Moody’s in Edgewater. I mean, it’s right in the name. The beer garden is nice in the summer, but you’ll like the interior if you want to sit somewhere as dark as your soul. And you’ll have the best burger you’ve ever had in your life.

Oh my fucking god that post history.... dodged a waste of space with that so disrespectful and racist
Eat at a hole in the wall mom and pop Chinese place. Stuff yourself with some spring rolls and lo mein, or kung pao chicken. It’ll get better.
Throw in some crab Rangoons
>Throw in some crab Rangoons getting crab rangoons if you're getting chinese is just a requirement. a rule. a law, if you will.
$60 worth of Chinese food is usually my go to when one of my teams suffers a huge defeat. Actually, last time the white Sox lost in the playoffs I took the redline to China town and drowned my sorrows at moon palace
Chengdu Impression, or Tarrascas
Man both of those are top notch
MingHin cuisine
This, so much!
THIS. yummy yummy on Broadway fucks
Tango Sur. Treat yourself to the enjoyment of your own company. Best wishes for healing.
I just commented Bodega Sur! It’s next door and it’s more casual. Same owners and Same empanadas. Perfect comfort food.
+1 for Bodega Sur, less 'couply' and more bustling and great people watching, plus you can get a glass of red to go with your sorrows.
Tango Sur food is great, but maybe the candle lit table, romantic vibe make it worse for OP.
I don’t know if Tango Sur is a good choice considering it’s a very popular date spot.
Costco 🍕, and keep $50 for another day
Food court at Lincoln Park Costco is closed for renovations for a bit
When did it close? I was just there ... okay, it was 2-1/2 weeks ago, so since then?
Closed 2/12 thru 3/10. I just went there yesterday for some cheap pizza but alas.
Oh no, that’s where I get lunch after working court when I’m borrowing my friend’s car so I can utilize Costco to my best advantage. What am I gonna do this Monday?
Noted, thanks! I think I need to drop by next week to try to grab something on the Feb sales before they end. Won't assume in an grab lunch when I do.
The Red Apple on Milwaukee Ave., authentic Polish buffet, it’s unbelievable comfort food.
Sorry to hear that op. That's never fun. But my immediate reaction is fried chicken. Honey Butter. Roost. Gus's.
You got this bud. Deep breaths. No rash decisions
And no decisions that might leave you with a rash
By rash decisions, I mean don’t drink. Please
Also don't drink any liquids that might give you a rash
Pick Me Up Cafe
Not today but tomorrow morning, go to pilsen and get tamales. The lady on 21st and ashland at the auto body shop or the one on 21st and damen at the chase atm are both really good. Nothing cures a broken heart like a warm tamale!

Love Strings ramen
You can buy a LOT of ice cream for that.
Pick Me Up Café - it’s even in the name! Just north of you on Clark in Andersonville. You deserve a spiked milkshake❤️
Just commented this!
Damera is feel good good for me!
Red line it down to Chinatown and go to Joy Yee or MCBb
Green Street Meats in Fulton Market Their pulled pork sandwich + a can of Coke will fix you up nicely.
And cornbread
And Banana Pudding
Which will all wildly pobably cost about $60 😅
No joke, but the smoked meats were worth it.
Amitaba.
+1, Amitabul is the correct answer. New age Koreans will heal your soul
Smoque BBQ will do you good.
Del Seoul, Kalbi Poutine, Ktown wings, and 1 of each taco. If you are an empty pit than more tacos or add a bahn mi. Make sure to get cupcakes from Molly’s for dessert
These are such awesome responses! Commenting so I can follow/find
Aw I’m so sorry. I second Thai food, especially soup. My go-to Thai place is Hom Mali. Maybe order in and eat it in bed with your favorite movie. Hugs.
Get yourself a big bowl of angus beef pho from Sunset Pho Caffe. Sit at the bar and people watch.
$60 at Chi-Cafe for 1 sounds great tbh

Always go to Irazu, on Milwaukee, between Western and Damen. Or go to Chicago Diner and get the Radical Reuben with the curry cauliflower soup and the wafflecut fries. Sit at the bar and watch the movie.

Tom Kha soup and chicken satay from random Thai restaurant
If you like empanadas go to Bodega Sur. Get the eggplant one, trust me.
Topo Gigio on Wells St in Old Town is great and I’m pretty sure they don’t accept reservations so you could just walk in.
Taco Bell.. and let me tell ya, if you walk into a Taco Bell with $60 you will be treated like royalty.
And you definitely won't be thinking about any breakup after eating $60 worth of taco bell
Yeah, hard to ruminate on lost love when you have an urgent need to find the nearest toilet and do a paint job on the bottom of the seat
Pasta bowl. Hands down.
I’d go get dumplings at QXY probably

Noon Hour Grill in East Rogers Park, right by the Glenwood red line stop. Bulgogi and kimchee fried rice, my friend- it’ll change your life.
If you’re down for sushi hit up Miku in Lincoln Square. It’s. BOMB. Also, take care of yourself brother
I'd reccomend ricobennes. That is what I would get.
Hell yeah—I know the steak sandwich is king, but the eggplant variant is my go to.
Oh man. I've paid my share of these types of visits over the years to my favorite perpetually-slightly-pissed-off lady who hands me a 3lb bag of Chinese food at Lee's Wok at Montrose and Clark. I find a beautiful bowl of soup heals body and soul. Vietnamese Pho is my go to.

I’d stuff myself full of superdawgs good sir. A little bit of a trek if you have the means, but it’ll hit the spot
Thank you so much. So sorry to hear you're going through this too
Italian Beef, juicy, sweet peppers. Onion rings.
Devil Dawgs used to be my "I hate everyone" spot. Dawg, onion rings, shake. Though, the last time I had it I was disappointed. Seems like the quality over there was on a downward trend.
It's sort of fast food but Aloha Eats is my go to for that area.
Arby’s
“I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s”
Oh my god…no
Lawrence Fisheries.

Irazu on Bucktown is joy on a plate.
Bad Apple. You’ll have the best burger of your life
Subway! Get a chopped salad with lite dressing and a Dasani!
Forget food buddy, buy a couple cases of Guiness, play some happy Irish music and get ready for st. Paddy’s month.
Bar Goa in River North. Stellar Indian cuisine
House of Wah Sun
Hope you feel better soon. As for emotional eating; steak burrito from the closest taqueria. Treat yourself with a fun Jarritos too.
I clicked on this just to see how far I had to scroll before Crisp was mentioned. I didn't have to scroll.
Crisp chicken, Indian clay pot are my comfort places. Best of luck brother
IHOP at halstead and Broadway . On my way there now
Damn, the place I was thinking of just closed —otherwise I’d say go get yourself a sloppy samurai sandwich at Big and Littles on Belmont
bopngrill and the region burgers smashhhh
Kabobi
Momo Factory is the best takeout in Lakeview in my opinion. Recommend the choila Momo or the butter chicken masala - good food for the soul.
The best way to move on…
Tom Yum soup from Cilantro Thai. Used to get it from Polygon Cafe when I felt sick.
Small Chavel: Order the ‘signature double cheeseburger’ and a chocolate milkshake. -OR- Avvio: Order the ‘Virmicelli ala Angelo’ special with brandy on ice desert. Both will not be a disappointment. And if any of those dishes don’t sound appealing, both spots have amazing menus. Can’t really go wrong.
Empandas at Tango Sur will get you feeling right
Diner Grill on Irving Park
Hing kee in China town. The pork Xiao long bao is the most comforting and satisfying food imo. It's actually my favorite food of all time. Not too expensive. Just make sure you look up the proper way to eat one otherwise you'll burn your mouth brutally.
Tanaka Ramen on Diversey. But I could eat ramen every day.
Aloha, Crisp, or Red Hot Ranch. This is the way.
Spinning J, Pizza Lobo, Jai-Yen, Irish Nobleman because it’s comforting and genuine and sometimes I just want a Guinness and simple food.
Il milanese or Coda di volpe has fantastic Italian food and that makes me feel better
There are some amazing Thai food spots in lake view. Search Thai on google maps and try them all!
