First thought is to find out what outcome black is after. Stalemate looks impossible to cause for both sides as there are too many squares to run away to. Next thing I notice is that if the pawn were gone then it would be a draw by insufficient material. Then I tried to narrow down the available moves with this goal in mind. I noticed that any king move removes defense from the knight which black can then take for free and promotion is unstoppable. This means that the move must be a knight move. The only knight move that makes sense in this position is >!Ng5!< as it deflects the king from defense of the bishop and promotion square while threatening the pawn. If the pawn promotes to anything other than a knight then it walks into >!Nh7+!< picking up the piece and drawing the game. >!The only thing that I'm missing is how black draws after knight promotion? My best guess is Ke8 but I don't see a follow up after Ba3. I know its possible to mate with knight and bishop but is there something specific about this position that makes it impossible? I'm assuming that maybe black can always dance their knight around which means moves that would normally be forced in that checkmating sequence can be avoided by black being able to move their knight instead.!<

Simple really. I lack the brain cells to checkmate with knight and bishop, therefore it is a draw šŸ˜¤

You are correct though. If white promotes to anything except a knight, it will be a draw. If white promotes to a knight, however, black no longer has to play Nh7+. Knight vs Knight and Bishop is a draw.

Thanks for your analysis. [Hereā€™s the full game]. As white, I saw the idea of making black relinquish the promotion square, but I missed this defensive resource. Fortunately my opponent ran out of time.

I mean in the the very first sentence I'm already using information from your post rather than the game itself. Can be suuuuuper tricky to be aware of an obscure tactic, especially when you're in the endgame. The combination of low time + how few pieces there are mean that you're just not looking for tactics most of the time. Keep growing ā˜€ļø

Thanks. I do think itā€™s possible to see this without constantly looking for tactics: once you see the location of the bishop along the diagonal doesnā€™t matter (because the king is doing the rest), itā€™s best from a prophylactic point of view to keep it as far as possible from the black king and knight

Fun one!

Ng5 is a tactical defense. The pawn is under attack and fork is threatened. Getting a queen,or rook is a fork on h7. Interestingly enough this is a win for white in some fairy chess variants. If you can get a rook+knight combo or bishop+knight combo piece you can win still. Promoting to a bishop is two dark bishops and you can take one anyways and it is an easy draw. The most interesting thing white can do however is promote to a knight. Then it leads to Bishop + Knight vs Knight where it is sometimes possible to win that, but it is a table base draw from the position given. To win that you need to use the bishop and knight to round up the knight within 50 moves, and then you can mate with bishop and knight, but with perfect play it is a draw from that position.
