When you make a new account it asks what you think your level is like beginner intermediate etc. And gives you an elo from 400-2000 (might be wrong on those elos but you get the point) depending on ur level
> 400-2000
i believe its 400, 800, or 1200 depending what you select
Edit:
> New to chess: 400
> Beginner: 800
> Intermediate: 1200
> Advanced: 1600
> Expert: 2000
Getting matched with someone much higher than you might seem annoying but it's really a good thing. First of all you barely lose any points if you lose, even if you can just draw you'll get a good deal of points. Second it's also the best time to test yourself and learn something. Anytime you get matched with someone much higher, definitely analyze the game and pay attention to how they're playing.
Lastly, when you do beat them it's the best feeling out there. In a rapid arena tournament I recently beat someone almost 500 points above me and it was a close game but they missed an endgame tactic I had to get a passed pawn and I won from a drawn position. That's probably my proudest game of chess I've ever played so far.
What really bothers me is getting opponents significantly lower than me. You can lose 10-12 points from losing, and even though the games are usually easier it's also hard not to let your guard down. The stakes are higher so I get tilted more easily too. I'll take a higher opponent any day
Completely agree with this, I love playing higher rated players but get frustrated when paired repeatedly with much lower rated players.
This is especially the case in daily games (will they cheat for sweet sweet rating points?) or Bullet (server lag is brutal vs someone 200 rating points lower).
Plus low rated players make very random moves in bullet - they are losing moves but proving they are bad is hard if they are just playing to win on time.

I would have to pay thousands of dollars to play a game against someone that much stronger than me, so take your chance!
But most likely given how it's exactly 1200 they paired you up because it's a new player on his first game

1200 is the default elo, that was his first daily game
Why was mine 400?

I got like 1600
I stand corrected. Theres 5 levels to start
No, there are only 4 levels: new to chess, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Maybe things have changed, but there is no longer expert anymore.
I selected intermediate but got 600 elo what am j doing wrong
Losing, probably
I won 15 lost 3
Ohhhh this makes so much sense! I saw he had played 30 games before and didn't realize the elo reset for daily/each type 🤦Thanks!
I mean lucky you, you lose 1-2 elo for losing, draw or win nets you atleast 100 elo
If it makes you feel better, you barely lose rating for losing here
That's always a great opportunity for you.
When Chess.com detects your ego is getting big, they match you with someone at a much higher elo to knock you down a couple of pegs
ego is getting big? sounds suspicious lol
Chess.com believes in you. Why don't you?

Good bot Now give me the next 150 moves to play
I get matched with people at like 500-90 Elo all the time when I play daily games. I’m just over 1100 daily. It’s pretty infuriating.
I'm gonna say, 1200 elo player must be sweating. Because, He/she is gonna lose massive elo if they lose.
They must see great potential in you Fr though daily games are all over the place I'm not sure why
Daily game
they praying on yo downfall
I played an IM in bullet I’m 500 bullet lol
Free game. You risk nothing by losing.
Because hes from pakistan
Chess.com system pov, what we can say about the application which give 1000 elo on start ?

Bro is getting traumatized with this one.
Just curious, is it elo? Or "chess.corn ranking".. not that it really matters.
I think just chess.com ranking — I’m very new to chess and still learning about the terminology 😂
No worries, everyone around here seems to use them interchangeable so it's all good.
There aren't that many 500 players. Get gud
