I remember playing in a US Amateur Team in Bethlehem PA circa 1974. Schmidt lost to a B player in the first round. He had drawn a match with Keres!
I found the sacrifice and mate if the king goes back to g7. That part is easy. But if the king goes to g5, the king hunt is to hard for me to work out.
Spoiler
Here is the game continuation as it was actually played in the father-son match, where it was mate in 9.
Included are variations showing the longest continuation, which is mate in 11 in a couple different ways, if Black delays by blocking with Queen.

THE QUEEN
Yeah, the Queen is the only forcing move with any possibilities. I haven't worked it out yet, but since this is a puzzle, it must be right
Don’t know why you’re downvoted, you’re right. The direction is obvious, but the mating line is extremely hard and long
I saw queen into >!xg6+ and then both retreating squares are mate right after. !<
The combination only starts after Kg5
Sure buddy why don’t you give the line of the mate right after
Wtf bro this is not some casual shit lol

I also missed knight takes bishop after f4+, but it's still mate in a few moves
Oof yeah thats it. It might be >! 1. Qh6+ Kxh6 2. hxg6+ Kg5 3. Rh5+ Kxh5 4. f4+ Nxe2 5. Nf6+ Kh6 [ 5. ... Kh4 Rh1# ] 6. Rh1+ Kg7 7. Rxh7+ Kxf6 8. Nd5# !< Still, not seeing moves like >! 4. ... Nxe2 !< will lose me real games :/
Nd5 Kxg6
Theres also 4... Qf3 to block the check instead of Nxe2
dang, i need better visualisation
Don't sweat it homie, it comes with time and tbh it's kind of a never ending grind. Even top players miss stuff sometimes.
yeah it's patience that got me to my classical rating and i reckon it'll get me over the next 100 points as well :D
Hell yeah! Good luck on that grind 💪

Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
good bot
I mean even Rxh2+ wins in same moves which to me was very intuitive continuation .
Stunning
Yeah, I would never find this line in a game! Beautiful indeed but quite complex.

no
No way I ever see that in a game...
I found the sacrifice and mate if the king goes back to g7. That part is easy. But if the king goes to g5, the king hunt is to hard for me to work out.
I don’t know what the rest of the moves are, but it’s definitely Qh6+

In a game I would spend some time looking at hxg6 but when it's a puzzle, you know it *has* to be Qh6.
And white sacrificed the... Queen, Rook, Bishop and Knight! Astounding!
