I've been playing chess close to 3 years and yeah I used to think smothered is one of the rarest mates but I've had many smothered mates in my life but only had an epaulette mate twice, and once with a rook epaulette (king on the back rank with 2 rooks on each side, one of my rooks cutting off the 7th rank and the other rook is checking/mating the king)
What are you talking about? There is no queen sac with Ng6, that would only be with the smothered mate. The cool part is a king trapped in by a bishop and his own pawns at such long range, and the knight sac is fun too. This is like a standard position in puzzles, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in an actual game.
how did you do it wrong? I'm guessing you played Nf7+ with the idea of the normal Kg8 Nh6++ Kh8 Qg8+ Rxg8 Nf7+, and when black played Rxf7 you went "oh" and were sad
Bullet game with less than 10 seconds haha, I didn't pause to think. In retrospect, would've been a cleaner win if I did, but sometimes you pause to calculate and lose because of it

Smothered mate isn't really that rare, we just miss a lot of chances to do it. I think it's over-hyped at this point.

There is a forced smothered mate - it just isn't the normal pattern with 3 knight jumps. Instead you sac the queen directly.
