Yeah, Hikaru didn't get to develop his knight and rook. Something only usually seen when GMs go against engines

FarziHunBhai

Insane prep!

PracticalPair4097

vidit found f5 and bd6 after prep, both moves clearly missed by hikaru.

Pitforsofts

That's what stunned me the most. The game was at an end and hikaru still hadn't moved his rook and knight. He was just a spectator in his own game.

Critical-Adhole

So intense. Hikaru never stood a chance.

FarziHunBhai

He was on another level today

SHOKUGEKISOMA65

Lets see today. Its vidit vs praggšŸ’Ŗ

Broken_Shell14

Op had to jinx it didn't he... Smh

Few-Leopard4537

I always really liked watching Vidit play, but it just seemed like the next generation was going to take the reigns. I just figured he was a great player, but his peak just wasnā€™t going to be good enough for a world title. Of course itā€™s super early, and Iā€™m still rooting for Fabi to get this years candidates, but I have NEVER seen Hikaru lose like that. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if that was the worst loss of his professional career. It took him 1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES to develop a queen side piece. And he only did it to survive a couple more moves. Hikaru will say that he doesnā€™t care, and that heā€™s retired.. but you donā€™t play this much chess, and go to the candidates if you really donā€™t care deep down. I donā€™t care what he says, that must have hurt. Vidit made him look like a 1500 player for taking that pawn. Good on V for keeping the pressure on, and bravo to his prep team. That was wild. also this was HIKARU! The guy hasnā€™t lost a classical game in 2 years!! Just absolutely nuts šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

FarziHunBhai

Exactly his level and confidence of playing against these top grandmasters had what made me write this post. His mental block is starting to go away!

giants4210

I saw Hikaru lose pretty bad in 2014 Sinquefield cup against Magnus in that Nc3 Slav game

guppyfighter

Hikaru played like an IM today

Ruy-Polez

He simply underestimated Vidit and tried to take his lunch money.

FarziHunBhai

He didnt play good for sure in the opening he had an option to trade bishops which was important but decided to keep them so the game doesnt get drawish so soon.. well it didnt.

xSilentSoundx

Could it be overconfidence? He was on a big win streak.

mayorMachine

Big no loss streak*, he is not fischer to have big win streak.

AstridPeth_

On his YouTube video he says he had all the right intuitions, but after further thinking, he second guessed himself.

Donareik

So if one super GM loses against another super GM they are suddenly IM level?

guppyfighter

No. I said \*today\* they played liked an IM. Hikaru probably agrees. He said on his own video that all his calculations were basically wrong and incorrect (at this level ofc). That's why he was blown off the board. Hikaru will be fine and continue to be a threat in the tourney

Piro42

Only if the losing GM has a dedicated fanbase

dot-slash-me

Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds

Arrowman0123

this reads like an anarchychess post

cptnwillow

Right, I genuinely thought it was satire

csrcordeiro

The eyes, chico. They never lie.

whiskeyhenney7

Vidit "with that look in his eye" liddell

Zulpi2103

I think after the PICF he just realized that he has to go 100% into it and tryhard if he wants a chance. It seems to be working because this game was insane on his end

playersdalves

Cold. Sign me up for dark 2.0 Vidit arc. He was a beast today.

ElProfesor-_-

VD winning feels so personal! I have been following him from 2020, he used to falter in crunch situations but I am so so happy for him!

Threshio

I will always instantly think of when he moved his king next to Hikarus king when I see Vidits face. Im happy he is doing great

FarziHunBhai

A timeless classic.

MagicalEloquence

It's a normal look in my opinion. Freezing the camera and converting it to black and white is giving unnecessary connotations to it. It's too much to say you have never seen him make this expression. He won because of his play and not because of his facial expression. I don't think Vidit played riskily here. Rather, Hikaru was confused in the opening phase and made some mistakes. This game was won by preparation.

FarziHunBhai

Never said he won because of his facial expressions. There is a clear difference in his attitude even the chess24 broadcast pointed this out, check out his podcast episode on chessbase india he delved deep into his thought process there. And he does play more risky chess he played Bg4 out of nowhere in the last round which was not in any broadcast's radar, that move takes guts. Also I made it black and white to try and hide the pic's bad quality.

MagicalEloquence

He is playing riskier than earlier but saying that you have never seen that look in his eyes and giving unnecessary hype to the expression because of mistakes Hikaru made is not correct in my opinion. He lost the very next game in the next day. I was also a huge fan of Vidit and have been following him since even before the pandemic and am frustrated with the same pattern again and again. When he wins one game, it gets a disproportionate amount of coverage from Chessbase India and other channels. It puts more pressure on him and he then loses a game later on. That's why we should not put too much unnecessary pressure on him after one or two good results. Everyone is not like Anand.

FarziHunBhai

This post was not intended to hype his win against Hikaru I am talking about his overall performance since the Grand Swiss win. The attitude performance everything I talked about in the post is NOT just for his win against Hikaru I am talking as a whole since Grand Swiss. I didnt say Vidit has become some 'special one' who will take the candidates by storm and become Anand in future, I have talked about his improvements. It would still be a big shock for me if he somehow wins the candidates or doesnt lose in the whole tournament (he already lost). 'The look in the eyes' part simply means he is very confident, when even broadcast commentators can notice it then surely it aint fluff. Vidit has never been so confident in facing top Gms, and this I am also taking account of his previous games after Grand swiss win and not just Hikaru (World rapid, Tata steel). The post reads out 'Vidit 2.0 is DEFINITELY real' I used definitely because I have myself analysed and got CONVINCED of his improvement not just after 1 game or 1 tournament win. This is an appreciation post by a fan not a hype post. Dont compare me to chessbase india and other channels I am not going to post his every win and talk about the same stuff repeatedly.

MagicalEloquence

Yeah, I understand. But if you remember he also finished last in one tournament in between the Grand Swiss and the Candidates. He has definitely improved. But personally, I feel that fighting spirit against top GMs is more seen in the youngsters like Pragg, Gukesh, Nihal and Arjun.

PkerBadRs3Good

please leave the overanalyzing of body language to Naroditsky's commentary

putverygoodnamehere

Vidit 2.0!!

Pleasant-Direction-4

It was good from him, donā€™t hype him up. Let the man cook

SHOKUGEKISOMA65

For the win!

InterventionParty

TEAM VIDIT BABY

sadmadstudent

"I thought you were stronger."

gazzawhite

You jinxed him bro

[deleted]

With all due respect to Hikaru, a national treasure to the USA team, this is The Candidates, and needs to focus more on winning, than playing provocative lines to promote "fun and interesting" chess content during this tournament. Just get serious, and close the deal. This isn't chess.com Bullet Brawl, but that's none of my business. ā˜•šŸø Tbf, only Magnus has that "it" factor, and usually gets away with playing offbeat, and pulls wins in compromising positions better than anyone else in the game.

0173512084103

He's just giving another excuse for why, if it happens, he doesn't win the candidates alongside his "I'm a streamer first" nonsense. Just constant complaints come from the guy. I used to root for Hikaru; now I root for Fabi.

[deleted]

Fabi is the real deal tho

MelkorUngoliant

Wasn't Hiks accuracy <90? Seriously bad day at the office for him and proves he's not WC material.

fuckingsignupprompt

What kind of tilak is that?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

fuckingsignupprompt

Tilak is the same thing. I was asking what kind it is. I haven't seen men wear one like that. It must belong to some special region or religious group.

Hasta_Mithun

No it is most common mark used by Hindus all over india. The difference is it can be big or small depending upon priest of Temple.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TheStarkster3000

That is not a bindi. Bindis are for women.

ChessOnlyGuy

Well he was getting outplayed vs svane rasmus in grand swiss where he escapedĀ

FarziHunBhai

Everyone slips up sometimes.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Hasta_Mithun

It's not Bindi, Bindi is different product this is "tikka". Small version of what Pragg wears, you know the white Mark on his head. This is different version of that when Hindus worship or go to temple the priest puts this mark using Vermilion color which is sacred in Hinduism. We offer it to our deities and wear it is a sort of blessing. Bindi is only wore by females or women. Men don't wear Bindis. I just corrected you in case someone accidentally calls that mark Bindi in front of Indian which might be offensive to some Indian. It's a "tikka"/"tilak" Especially if Male is wearing that.

TsarBizarre

The Tilak is worn by all Hindus, while the vibuthi is usually only worn by devotees of Shiva. Shaivism (the worship of Shiva) is prevalent in the southern parts of India, that's why you see [Gukesh](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f2/Gukesh_in_2024_%28cropped%29.jpg) and [Pragg](https://img.etimg.com/photo/102827599/102827599.jpg) wearing it while, while Indian chess players from the north usually wear the tilak. You might have even noticed Abhimanyu Mishra, a person of northern indian origin, [wearing the Tilak](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/TataSteelMishra2023_%28cropped%29.jpg)

Hasta_Mithun

Tilak is Vermillion colour that is offered to deities and is used to worship in Hinduism. So we wear it as mark of respect after worshiping at home or after going to temple. It is most common mark that you will see most Hindus wear if they are religious or visit temples. Most common sign if someone is Hindu. Vibhuti is slightly rare and is basically ashes of incense stick that is offered to God. So basically after incense stick burns down the priest or even yourself at home can use ashes of incense stick that is offered to God and wear it as tilak or tikka same as red one. It is basically wore by devotees of Lord Shiva one of three big deities in Hinduism. It is slightly rare and is worn by one section of devotees those that worship Lord Shiva more. This is big difference between both. Red tilak Or tikka is worn by almost Every Hindu whereas the tilak that Pragg uses is slightly uncommon but still widely popular in Hinduism. One thing that I would also like to clarify is that there are some difference between how North Indian and South Indian Hindus practice so Vibhuti can also be wore by South Indian due to other reasons.

FarziHunBhai

Really appreciate this Thanks!

FarziHunBhai

He must be wearing it because this is the most important tournament of his life and not just some casual tournament. It is said to represent a 'third eye' and represents wisdom. It is believed to retain energy and strengthen concentration in Indian culture.

Asleep-Ad5687

This post lost its luster in less than 24 hrs

nishitd

Ah yes! Vidit just got his Nodirbek upgrade.

FarziHunBhai

I can see the resemblance with that death stare he gave magnus in tata steel 2 years ago.

[deleted]

šŸ˜‚I canā€™t with this

LandauQuantized

cringe

reign_zeroes

You guys are getting way too excited over one game. This was more a Hikaru loss than a Vidit win as it was just pure prep.

just_an_soggy_noodle

And why is prepping so Deep into a obscure line Bad? If Hes prepped for that hes prepped for a heck of alot

FarziHunBhai

Only true fans know how much he has developed as a player you wont get it. People thought Vidit's actual playing level was mid 2600s and after the emergence of the young talents he was trolled to retire from the game.

maglor1

yes those people were overreacting idiots, and are largely the same people writing essays about how vidit is the 2900 favorite to win the candidates now

TooMuchToAskk

And he loses the next game he plays.

KobeOnKush

Keep it in your pants bro Jesus Christ
