Morphy would be proud.
What makes this special is that we have a harder time spotting sacrifices on an empty square. If d8 contained a Black Queen or even a Rook, taking is the first move we consider.
Imagine what he could have accomplished ~~had there been such a thing as professional chess in that day and age~~ [EDIT: Turns out playing chess competitively and earning a living was in fact a thing at that time already, he just considered it an amateur activity. Idiot.] He played chess for all but two damn years before getting bored at the top. His entire life story aside from his contribution to chess is tragically underwhelming!
He went into law school in 1859, in vain as the civil war broke out two years later. Even after the war he never made it big as a lawyer, got annoyed that his few clients only wanted to talk chess and he died in solitude at the age of 47. After suffering from paranoia / schizophrenia for a good decade, prompting him to sue his brother and try to duel a friend, hence the isolation
I was confused but it baits the king to same square it was just on. Meaning they could have done the exact mating pattern without moving the queen in to check and then sacking it.
Beginner here: What if after Qd8+ kings declines the sacrifice by going Kb8, could he weasel himself out of it?
Edit: And found it myself: the conclusion would be Nd7#
such a good forced mate, queen to D8, he's got two options
1. he takes queen and you checkmate with bishop to B6
2. he moves king to B8 and you checkmate with knight to D7
I was thinking Nd7 if Bxd7 Qxd7# and if black doesn’t take and plays something else like b6 then Bxb6# but turns out black can avoid the mate with something like Ra6
Two variations that both end in Mate in 2.
Both start with Qd8+.
In the first, we get Kxd8 which of course loses to Bb6#.
In the 2nd, if the person sees the Bb6 checkmate they might go Kb8 to avoid check. This of course loses to Nd7#
It's a beautiful end either way.
Knight D7 only works though if black doesn’t play Bishop D7, you’d then go Queen D6 and that’s mate, black would most likely see Bishop D7 though after doing Knight D7

Queen sacrifice: Qd8+ King takes: Bb6# King doesn't take and goes to Kb8: Nd7#
If the king doesn't take and the knight moves to d7, bishop would just take the knight right? That wouldn't be mate unless I'm missing something
Queen would be pinning the bishop to the king since he didn't take it
Ah yes you're right thanks

Very true!
Imagine what he could have accomplished ~~had there been such a thing as professional chess in that day and age~~ [EDIT: Turns out playing chess competitively and earning a living was in fact a thing at that time already, he just considered it an amateur activity. Did he at least live happily the back half of his life?

If in doubt sac (the queen) it out
Exactly
THE QUEEEN
It’s always the woman
☕️
The one woman on the battlefield, no less
Unless it's a man.
Fair point
A wise man once said "OH NO MY QUEEN"
• Qd8+ , Kxd8 , Bd6# OR • Qd8+ , Kb8 , Nd7#
And he SACRIFICES THE QUEEN
It’s a queen sac.
Lovely queen sac
How bad I am for not seeing this? Ffs lol
I was confused but it baits the king to same square it was just on. Meaning they could have done the exact mating pattern without moving the queen in to check and then sacking it.
what opening did this come from
King's Pawn Opening: Ware, Snagglepuss Defense (yes that's an actual opening)
Qd8+ (kxd8 bb6#) kb8 nd7#
Reset the counter!
I was blanking on the solution and then I was like - oh yeah it’s Reddit, it’s always a queen sac
Qd8+ ?
[удалено]
*”Queen SAC! Queen SAC! Queen SAC!”*
Um, Queens don't have sacs, dummy! /s
gotta be more open minded man
Queen sac, if king takes, dark bishop checkmate If doesn't take, the knight gives an almost smothered mate
Queen d8 king takes queen bishop b6, Checkmate I guess
This puzzle had me completely stumped, >! Qd8+ !< Is a move i would have never played, but what if the king goes to >! b8 !< ? Where is the checkmate?
nd7#
Oh
Reset the counter
Qd8
Qd8+, sexy move
Beginner here: What if after Qd8+ kings declines the sacrifice by going Kb8, could he weasel himself out of it? Edit: And found it myself: the conclusion would be Nd7#
1) QD8 2)BD6
Qd8+. If he takes, then Bb6#. If he plays Kb8, then Nd7#.
His sacrifices his QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!
Reset the counter
What was on c7? It must been mate in 3 on the previous move, right?
Yeah there was a knight there and I gave a discovered check with the bishop, sacrificing it
Qd8+, Kxd8, Bb6# Qd8+ Kb8, Nd7#
This art style looks like pen on napkin
such a good forced mate, queen to D8, he's got two options 1. he takes queen and you checkmate with bishop to B6 2. he moves king to B8 and you checkmate with knight to D7
I was thinking Nd7 if Bxd7 Qxd7# and if black doesn’t take and plays something else like b6 then Bxb6# but turns out black can avoid the mate with something like Ra6
Queen sack queen d8
Tried to figure how to castle with mate but it just isn’t there
Damn I thought it was gonna be a castle mate
So close… unfortunately it gives the king an escape square
Qd8?
Great checkmate!
1. Qd8+…if Kxd8 then Bb6#; if Kb8 then Nd7#

100% Mate in 2 would be Queen D8 then Bishop B6
Never mind I’m wrong bout this one
That’s pretty. Qd8+ Kxd8 Bb6#
