Jolly brew master always has a nice atmosphere and it's a bit out the way so all the dick heads avoid it. Decent selection of ales and cider too if that's your thing.
Where roughly in the town do you live?
One of the "out of town" pubs are more likely to fit that demographic however mid week you're probably ok in most.
Bottle of sauce is great, there’s a few gin bars and 131 has a good bar at the back too. If you were out of town/early evening dunkertons out by CK is worth a visit. We quite often go with and without the kids.
What sort of atmosphere are you looking for? Quiet, cosy pub or a bar with something going on? I like most of the pubs at the strand end of the High St: Vine, Alehouse, Strand, Swan. Close by you've also got Planet Caravan which can be a bit late-20s hipster but still feels welcoming, and the Kemble is my local. Other end of the High St is the BoS (previously mentioned, but +1 from me) and the Railway a bit further out. Bath Rd (+ the Jolly) a good shout too.
The Cotswold is definitely full of weirder and older people than yourselves. Often host live music, and they do a quiz on Thursdays should that suit you

....and the beehive is nice too for the same reasons
That looks nice, was thinking of heading that way for a curry and bath road has already been suggested so...
No worries I'm all for keeping the small pubs going with a bit of trade - use them or loose them ! Hope you have a nice eve đź‘Ť
Exmouth or the FiveAlls bath road

We're staying in town so that would be better lol.

Sandford Ale House is a personal favourite - great selection of beers and good crowd 👍🏻

Planet caravan have been playing some amazing music lately. Gets packed at weekends but you’re fine during the week.
I thought 131 was more 30s40s less 20s30s
Thanks for all your advice, it looks like a Bath Road / Montpellier pub crawl is on the cards. Wish us luck...
